Ignorantly, Gyle had expected there would be more pause between explosions than the forced one he'd called to have Axyen carried away. But no, as the match resumed the explosions would begin again.

Emma would lead the explosive symphony with another confringo, and Ara would represent the Vipers with a Cracker jinx of her own. EmmaLee would copy her last spell and cast a flipendo, while Draven took precautions and aimed a ventus up at the gathering storm clouds above. And while the spell was different, Matthew would also copy his last round's perfection, casting the strongest looking obscuro possible.

Again the explosions were first across the piste. Emma's confringo this time would miss Draven and land at his feet, blowing piste pieces into any exposed skin. Ara's crackers would catch EmmaLee narrowly in a dazzling display as radials shot out towards Emma. The display would stay purely visual in purpose, as Emma sidestepped the bundles without even looking. And even with all of her focus on the incoming blindfold, Matthew's spell would still wrap deathly tight across her eyes.

As each side traded blows, the storm had blown over to the Badgers. Brewing above it crackled, threatening electric doom. Was this some type of metaphor? For the Badgers sake, Gyle hoped not.

Draven has just about breathed a sigh of relief when the ground exploded underneath his feet. Bits of debris attacked his ankles, tearing at his pants. Looking up, he found Emma staring right at him, clearly having cast the spell. How nice.

Redjusting his grip on his wand, Draven kicked a bigger piece of debris over to the Hufflepuff side, hoping one of them would lose concentration. No such luck.

Sending a quick Ventus over to the stormclouds, he followed them with his eyes until they were right where they belonged. Above Emma²'s head. "Matt, you're on fire brother," he called out, watching as a beautifully executed obscuro wrapped itself around Emma's eyes. Ara, too, would not be undone. Wizard crackers found their way beside Emma², exploding in elegant sparks.

She was scary good. Draven glanced over to the tomboy, something in his stomach giving a flip. Oh no.

Emma practically snarled as she released her chosen spell. It felt off as soon as it left her wand and she wasn’t surprised when it missed Draven. What she was surprised at was that she completely missed stopping the blindfold that wrapped tightly across her eyes. Making a sound of frustration, she grumbled under her breath as she sidestepped slightly, hoping that any more spells would miss.

Matthew's past worries fled into the background as he once again casted a perfect rendition of a spell he coul prove to be familiar with. It was such a wild turn of events since his first round that he couldn't resist rubbing his own eyes to make sure he had truly seen what he had. It made him proud to be standing next to the years above him and still being able to hold his own. I mean blindfolding a fifth year surely had to come with some celebration.

For the first time in a long time, Matthew truly felt like a viper. Like he was the snake and not just the venom. Matthew's magic was explosive, it was powerful and goddamn it was accurate, at least today. Maybe he really was learning, maybe all his attempts to grow this year were really capable of paying off. Who knows, maybe he would finally end a year not feeling sorry for himself. There was still a long way to go to know for sure, but for a small fraction of a moment, he felt truly hopeful. Plus even if the tides did change, at least currently those devastating confringos weren't coming his way.

Merlin protect the student who set his curls ablaze, for they would know the real bite of this snake.

Everyone seemed to have made some divine warlock, wizard or witch mad. A series of failures was about to take hold of the piste. And while the Badgers would get the worst of it, the Vipers would not be free either.

Two duelists would fail to produce anything. EmmaLee and Draven would have their respective obscuro and cracker jinx fizzle out, producing an odd little flash and sputter of magic at the tips of their wands. Emma would go a step beyond that - failing so miserably that her ventus would blow right back into her face. The only two free of mishaps would be Ara and Matthew. Ara would risk a second cracker jinx (couldn't have the piste too quiet) and Matthew would throw another flipendo the Badger's way.

The next few seconds were hard to watch. The two successful spells would catch their tragets with ease, EmmaLee even unable to escape the radial crackers. If there wasn't enough to worry about in front of them, the unmoved storm clouds would cracker and boom. EmmaLee's hair would begin to float for a moment, before lightning struck her.

Would this carnage be enough to appease whoever the duelists had annoyed? Or were the mishaps just beginning?

"Stop looking at me like that-" Ara snapped. Draven ticced, messing up the wand movement right before he finished casting.

Was he THAT transparent?

Merlin.

His spell fizzled out, the wand seemingly disgusted by its owner.

Draven fixed his face, biting down on the inside of his cheek. Yeah, that would do it. He'd need to move to a new city. Perhaps change his name.

"My mistake" he said, feeling the venom gather on his tongue. He swallowed it. He wouldn't snap. Emma was proof of why he shouldn't; she'd been aiming for his head the entire duel.

He briefly fantasized about bombarda-ing his way to the other side of the globe, if only to do something with the vicious anger clawing its way up his throat. Merlin. He needed to focus. Needed to not fail a second spell. Needed the duel to be over so he could go and shamefully smoke a cigarette in the courtyard.

On the other side of the room, EmmaLee got struck by lightning. He should have felt a lot worse about it than he did.

This was now just starting to feel cruel. To say that luck did not favour the badgers that day would be an understatement. Not only would Emma be hit by a barrage of attacks from himself and Ara while being blindfolded, but her spell would backfire on her too. Then there was EmmaLee who had clearly pissed off Zeus as the cloud Emma had so disappointingly failed to shift crashed down with lightning frying her partner.

Matthew would wince at the sight of it despite his previous celebrations. He so vividly recalled the bloodbath of last years duelling match-ups that he could not quite revel in the satisfaction. For a sport meant to be performed by children, duelling was very clearly against most worldly health codes. They were literally signing themselves up for torture, multiple times a year, with the desired outcome simply being; don't get knocked unconscious. The whole thing really was very strange.

Still, there was a feeling of casting against a real opponent that electrified his spirit, though thankfully not as destructively as it did EmmaLee's. It was the sudden rush of magic surging through you, the way his wand would arc with his hand becoming an extension of his body to perfectly strike the desired target. The pride it gave him was unmatched, and given he hardly ever gave himself a day off from criticism, there was a sweetness to it.

Next to him his partners seemed to be having some kind of spat about staring at one another. Perhaps it was a lover's quarrel, everything seemed to be romantic in notion these days at Hogwarts. All he ever heard was who was dating who and who would be asked to the ball and all sorts of other nonsense, moronic if you asked Matthew. As if we don't have enough problems in this school without romance getting in the way.

Suddenly an image popped into his head, an image of a boy with blonde hair and a crazed grin. It was the kind of grin a villain would wear, but the kind of villain you knew was evil but had the charisma to back it up. The exact kind of person Matthew had to stay away from. It was obvious who he'd meant and he wasn't about to give his mind the satisfaction of naming them. Instead he took a deep breathe, cleared his mind and readied for the next round.

Luck could change at any moment, he wasn't going to give it any opportunities.
