2025/26, Stage 1 Hufflepuff vs Gryffindor: Match 8

NPC Post
I hesitated, and that second was all it took for chaos to break loose. Sparks fly left and right, and fire bursts forth once more. A Hufflepuff's own spell backfires on them. and I wince as they're flipped backwards. Perhaps my hesitation is a good thing; at least I'm not being hurt by my own spell. Nonetheless, I steel myself for what's to come. The match is going well so far; let's hope it lasts.

Well, that didn't go as well as I hoped. Rather than hitting my target, the spell backfired and hit me instead, which wasn't ideal considering it was a Knockback Jinx, too. I stumbled backwards a little bit, trying to regain my composure from the hit. Focus, focus. We had to put a dent in them somehow.

The fog surrounding them was an absolute nightmare to contest with, and Vera was not surprised in the slightest when her spell missed. She almost regretted the fog she conjured herself on her opponent, but she shook her head. There was a reason for it, and hopefully the reasons would come to fruition soon.

"Shit," she hissed when the fire hit her again, patting herself off as the flames died out in seconds.

She breathed out in relief. This was the second Fire-Making Spell she'd been hit with today, and even though they hadn't set her completely alight, she preferred to keep the burning to a minimum. You couldn't repair burnt clothes and buying new ones would take another two months. Plus, there was a risk that her hair would burn and she did not want that in the slightest.

When she turned to look at the state of her teammates, she found two types of people: the one that froze (again) and the one who lost their focus and had a spell go wrong.

It was to be expected, of course. Vera was a new student, a new player, a new captain, even. Despite her best efforts in preparing for this match, it was going to be difficult. Her other teammate was also a fellow First year, and the other was only the year above but new to the team. It was tempting to say that, had her teammates not frozen up, they might've had a better chance. But she understood. It was everyone's first match, after all, and freezing up was bound to be part of the experience. Vera was just getting lucky with her casts. For now.

Hopefully the luck would hold for just a little bit longer.

Day 2 - Afternoon slot
Amelia, at last, made her move. Aislin nodded appreciatively at the curl of fire she sent across the stage, in part because it was a good move and in part because she'd been getting a little worried Amelia wasn't okay up there, which she had absolutely no clue how to handle. But she didn't have to! The duel was alight with the combined and opposing efforts of six different duellists, all weaving strategy and spinning magic.

Or, mostly all doing those things. They were at least all trying, but the third Hufflepuff still hadn't shaken the backfired jinx, it seemed, stumbling over the spell again only narrowly less badly. It was a high-pressure environment to come back from such a painful mistake, so no wonder. At least they narrowly avoided the Flipendo from the third Gryffindor.

Before Eonaria was set on fire (which was not a pleasant experience whatsoever, as Aislin had learned yesterday), she incanted a neat Expelliarmus, ensuring Amelia at least wouldn't be able to set her on fire again. It was a reasonable concern; Cassian, after all, was demonstrating an absolute commitment to one spell against one person. Verity would be offered no break, more sparks catching on her leg, and by now Aislin could only offer a thin-lipped smile if her fellow captain glanced at her, mostly convinced Verity would be leaving this duel early for the Hospital Wing. Maybe not, she could still figure out the patterns in how Cassian aimed, or something, but her latest attempt to shroud the Gryffindors in even thicker fog didn't seem to do much, like the fog had already reached its maximum density. It didn't seem to be saving her, anyway.

Today is just not a great day for me, honestly. First, I spaced out. Then, I critically failed my spell. And then, I couldn't even cast the next one. Talk about extremes. But it isn't the end yet. And if it isn't the end, then I just had to keep doing. One of these days, my spells will actually succeed.

Clearly, the luck had run out as Vera was the victim of yet another Fire-Making Spell from the same person.

"This is getting ridiculous," Vera sighed, then a wet cough came over her body. The fact that her clothes were on fire weren't helping the fact she was inhaling so much smoke that her immune system was on overdrive. If the smoke wouldn't clear soon, she was sure she'd pass out from smoke inhalation, if not getting hit by another spell.

Cassian let out a small whoop! of joy as his spell connected once again. He might have been a one-trick pony, but at least he was a one-trick pony that succeeded โ€” which was something he couldn't say about some of the other duellists in his match. Oh well, at least it seemed that his team was doing alright... although, was Eonaria on fire? Glancing over worriedly, Cassian remarked that she was ablaze, which seemed to be rapidly becoming a theme of the duel.

I fire. And I miss. First hesitating, now a miss. I can't believe my luck. At this rate, I'll be knocked out before I can land a single spell. I shake my head; that doesn't matter now. Instead, I spare a quick glance at my teammates, hoping they have had better success. Sure enough, Eonaria manages to land her spell, causing Amelia's wand to fly out of her hand. Cassian, too, lights Verity up once more. My teammates seem to have this handled; it is only a matter of time before I, too, step up to the plate, I tell myself.

XXXEonaria fired off a Disarming Charm at the second year Hufflepuff, excited that one of her spells had finally landed. Unfortunately, the Hufflepuffs seemed to have taken inspiration from Cassian's successful Incendios as one came hurtling back at her.

XXX"I think I've noticed, thank you!" Eonaria yelped when Cassian pointed it out, not unkindly. Robes were fireproof, right?? On the bright side, another of the Hufflepuffs was suffering the same predicament as her-- pun unintended-- though she supposed that being on fire in any situation could not really be considered 'bright.'

The terror that had bubbled in the second year only moments before, evaporated as she managed to finally get a grip on herself. With a carefully practiced, and fluid movement, Amelia aimed her spell at a girl by the name of Eoronia, or so she was fairly sure. But no one could have imagined the pure excitement on the first yearโ€™s face, when her spell was perfectly successful! With a bright, utterly cheerful grin, she issued a small jump into the air in excitement. Her first spell in her first duel had been successful!

Perhaps she had been a little too distracted by her success, as Amelia did not notice nor dodge the spell that came souring towards her. In a moment, her beloved wand had flown out of her hand leaving her completely unprotected. A grimace crossed her features and she looked around, hoping for a clue to guide her to her next move. And, of course, the certain win of Hufflepuff, right?

It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be!
