Despite spending an entire year at Hogwarts, the castle felt so foreign to him after his time homeschooled in Germany with his grandmother. If he had known he would be placed an entire year behind his contemporaries with the need to take a stupid exam to catch up with them all, Harlan may had decided to fight harder to stay home. He wasn't naive to the fact that his only friends were his grandparents and he was spending the best of his youth chatting up and charming the old lady brigade who came over once a week for tea with his grandma. Although, each one had mentioned a granddaughter they'd love to set up the young pureblood with until Grandma Ida cursed them for putting their stupid thoughts into her grand baby's mind. She didn't know exactly what happened with Harlan during his first year, an icarus to close to the sun of a daring witch named Caoimhe had him plummeting from the sky without so much of a safety charm to cradle his fall. But nevertheless, Harlan had to persevere and here he was back in the very place that haunted him hoping that Caoimhe would be nowhere to be found and he could simply lick his wounds until he was back to former glory. It wouldn't take very long, Harlan could never help his tendencies to charm, blind, and beckon others into his hedonistic tendencies and a desire for social clout for him and his family. The little lion cub, blossoming into far more ferocious as his body matured and he continued to grow, moved with the intent of an apex predator in the making. His eyes quickly darted from left to right as he gleaned as much information as he could from the castle walls, living portraits, and the occasional passing ghost as Harlan made his way to his very first class after having his initial paperwork accepted to re-enroll in Hogwarts as a second year. The doorway to the Defense Against the Dark Arts class had still remained the same as he followed clusters of students making their way into the classroom while Harlan kept his distance wanting to not look like an absolute idiot as he acclimated back into the schooling system. Tugging at his robes, the fabric clung to his form as his first year robes fit a bit too snug as the teenager now had grown almost a foot since first purchasing them. He asked for better robes, but both his parents wanted to ensure they weren't wasting galleons for something Harlan would just run from again. It would only be two months and he wouldn't have to look a little bit foolish in robes that were a smidge small. He was only fortunate now that he went with the suggestion of buying his robes big. For the rest of the students, he was sure it was just another Monday with a couple of months until Summer, but as Harlan entered the room and scanned the faces of these students that he'd never seen or met before, the teenager gulped down any nerves he could feel and moved with faux authority that he simply needed to muster. Without skipping a beat, Harlan moved through the maze of chairs and found a seat near the middle that was empty and plopped his stuff down with authority. Whomever might've sat there before, well, it was his spot for today and he wasn't going to give it up so easily. |

My World is an Oyster
GUESS WHO'S BACK, BACK AGAIN Astra was, by no means at all, considered an important presence. Vaguely threatening, generally pleasant enough for polite company, occasionally odd, sure. Important? Never.
However, she did have her spot. Term was almost over, she'd been sitting in her spot in every single class for months now. Some even since her first year! Even if the class consisted of ill-mannered, juvenile, uncouth, and discourteous preteens, they at least had the decency to respect someone's spot.
Except for this punk.
Astra came in with the latter half of the class, behind the Gryffindor in robes two sizes too small who was now seated where she ought to be. Her satchel hung heavy with the weight of a library book not necessary for class, but that she had been devouring in her free time, one on non-human beings and the other on things like hags and dolls. Y'know. Very important information. Pouring over these books had caused a bit of a lapse in the viper's perception of time, a lapse that had almost caused her to be late but not quite.
Astra tossed her satchel in the seat beside the kid. "Are you new?" she asked, tilting her head as if to peer more closely at the boy as she slid into her new seat. A temporary new seat. "Or unaware of just how disruptive sudden changes can be in the learning environment? Or, maybe, attempting sabotage?"
Astra could say whatever she liked about becoming "less emotionally driven" as she grew older, all of it was lies when it came to frustration or anger.
"That's my spot," she finally explained, nodding towards the seat. "It's been my spot for almost two years now. And you are the first person who has, for lack of a better term, stolen it. It's a very audacious move, Mister-" bollocks, she was blanking on the name, did she even know it? Did he even have one? Certainly not one she remembered- "Bravado." Alright, not her best work, but it seemed fitting given the circumstances. "Do you do this sort of thing often? Try to derail people's mornings, I mean." Not that she hadn't done most of the work herself, being almost late and all. And was the lack of sleep finally getting to her? Even to her own ears Astra sounded like a total ass. Though that incredibly astute observation would only come later, as most incredibly astute observations do.

At first, it seemed as though Harlan had gotten off scot free as the class began to fill in slowly as people moved into whatever seat they had decided had been claimed as theirs. Feeling as though he had made it safely through, the boy pulled out his book for class and notebook readying to find his way back into the rhythm of Hogwarts after being away for so long. Well, thatβs what he tried to do, until a ginger witch in Slytherin robes with her nose upturned and a fox-like face tossed her bag with more force than he was expecting into the seat next to him while asking him a question in an accusatory tone. "Are you new?" A part of Harlan wanted to laugh at the question with how obvious it was that he was clearly out of place and a random student who appeared a month or two before graduating, but Harlan knew the question was rhetorical. The heat continued to rise as he swore there was steam protruding from her ears as she continued her monologue. " Your new seat looks just as good to me. " gesturing to where she had thrown her bag for the sake of not wanting to move. They would smell fear and attack if given an inch, Harlan wasn't planning that, certainly not on his first day back at Hogwarts. " But if you really want to turn this into something worth fighting for. " The Gryffindor was quick to pull out his wand while still sitting in the seat and lazily pointed it in the girl's general direction. " Then meet me at a piste later and duel me for your spot. " By raising the stakes, he hoped the girl would simply give up and not make it such a big deal. All he wanted to do was get through the day in one piece. " And you're right. I'm back to Hogwarts after some time away and i'm not coming back one day and letting some elitist Slytherin push me around because you're having a little tantrum. " He withdraw his wand and gestured back to the seat next to him while his free hand dug into his backpack and handed her one of the granola bars that he kept for a hunger emergency. " So you can either continue down this rampage or take this granola as a peace offering, your choice. " He'd hope that he knew how to play that, but only time would tell if she'd accept or decide to double down on a fight. |
