Fred couldn’t help the grin that spread across his face when he saw how Lucille reacted to his teasing invitation. Her excitement was infectious, the way her eyes lit up, how she moved forward without hesitation, it made him smile even wider. “What? I’m a great dancer, you’ll see,” he said, feigning confidence in a tone that was all playfulness and no arrogance. He clearly didn’t mean it, he was a decent flyer, sure, but as for dancing? That was still a mystery. Not that it mattered. He wasn’t here to prove anything; he just wanted to have fun, and seeing Lucille smile like that already made the idea of dancing seem like a great one.
Before he could say anything else, she grabbed his arm again, this time with much more energy. “Whoa!” he laughed, barely managing to keep up as she pulled him toward the center of the dance floor. Whatever shyness she’d had about the water had completely vanished, replaced by an excitement that made Fred feel oddly proud. That had been his goal, after all, to make her relax, to help her forget whatever was bothering her. And judging by the determined grin on her face, he’d succeeded.
When Lucille came to a sudden stop, Fred did too, nearly bumping into her. His eyes met hers, and for some reason, his chest tightened a little. His smile faltered just for a second, not out of discomfort but out of surprise at himself, mostly. His heart seemed to skip a beat, and he felt the warmth creep up his neck before he could stop it. Act normal, Fred. Just act normal. He silently repeated the thought, forcing a small breath through his nose and hoping she didn’t notice the color rising on his face.
Then came her exaggerated “Shall we?”, perfectly dramatic and completely disarming. Fred’s grin returned instantly, and he couldn’t help but laugh. “We shall,” he replied with mock seriousness, his voice full of playful charm. He placed one hand behind his back and gave her an overly formal bow, before taking her hand in his and standing upright again.
They began to dance, or rather, something close to dancing. Fred wasn’t exactly graceful. His steps were a bit too wide, his rhythm a bit uncertain, but he moved with unfiltered enthusiasm. Every time he stumbled slightly, he laughed it off, trying again, and again, finding his own rhythm to the lively beat of the gramophone. He didn’t care that it wasn’t perfect; it was fun.
Then, all at once, the music choked and sputtered to silence. The chatter dimmed, replaced by a strange, melodic whispering that seemed to rise from beneath their feet. Fred froze, his head turning toward the lake. The sound was eerie, beautiful, but unsettling. He didn’t have time to wonder, though, before the world went dark.
For a heartbeat, everything vanished, the lights, the color, even the warmth of the candles. Only the moon remained, silver and cold, painting Lucille’s face in ghostly glow. Fred blinked, half expecting something to move in the darkness. Then, as quickly as it had gone, the light returned. The music resumed, but the laughter there was before didn't seen to fill the air once more. Fred looked around, then back at Lucille, letting out a nervous laugh. “Well,” he said, still half-grinning, “guess we passed the first test. Dance floor’s still standing.”

Speech -- Thoughts
Pam had, in fact, not considered liking to dance.
In hindsight, she should've seen it coming. After all, the place they had stepped into was meant for that specific purpose. The air itself seemed to hum with rhythm, soft notes drifting out from somewhere near the water. If she had wanted to avoid dancing, they should've stopped at the ship they'd come through. Although, Pam had stored that away in her mind to visit later. The food and drinks had looked inviting. But she'd have to survive the current predicament first. Unfortunately for her, Pam's dancing skills were practically non-existent. She was more than certain that her lower body was incapable of moving to any kind of beat.
Or even without one, really.
But this was Ruth. Even if Pam tripped them up, or, worst case scenario, sent the two of them into the water, the girl wouldn't judge her. And well, Pam could swim so that was one less problem. Although the water would be really cold right now.
Pam grinned as her best friend pointed down at her own shoes, barely visible under the layers of her dress. Somehow the two girls had chosen to wear different shades of the same color. Definitely nothing to do with the watery theme.
She was drawn out of her thoughts as the black-haired girl turned to offer her a hand, a comforting smile on her lips, even though the glint in her eyes told Pam she was about to pull something on her. Pam found herself smiling back as she caught her hand, the familiar words momentarily transporting her back to their last ball, "I would be most honored, my Lady. Although, I must ask- are you acquainted with the art of swimming? The waters hold a perilous sort of charm tonight."
Pam wasn't quite sure how she slipped into talking like she was in an 18th century drama, but it served the purpose. Assuming Ruth understands me, that is.
The stillness of the night added a note of calm, threading through the air like a slow breath between songs, softening the laughter and music until everything felt distant, suspended. Pam tried to focus on her movements and not ruin the soft mood by stepping on her friend's foot (although that was only a matter of time), while subconsciously risking a glance around at the other people who had shown up. Not a lot of familiar faces.
The gramophone spluttered, silence cutting through the enchanting tune it had been playing, and through the silence, soft whispers floated in, beautiful and inviting. Pam frowned, shifting nervously, just as the lights went out, bathing the place in delicate moonlight. Can such type of magic also have performance difficulties? Then, as quickly as it had come, it was gone. The lights flickered back on, and the music started again. Pam glanced at Ruth nervously, "Probably nothing, right?"

✽Tonight was the night. The night Dylan had been unsure about ever since he had arrived back at Hogwarts. He didn't really know what to expect. His first ball the school year before had been quite eventful as he had reunited with his cousin Avery and experienced a wet welcome when the ceiling clouded and rained. That was one way to make a ball interesting.
This time was different. This time he was late only because he was making sure his hair was at least tamer than usual and his clothes were neatly pressed. It almost felt like he was going to a pureblood ball when instead he was attending a student led ball at Hogwarts.
This year he didn't have a date. He really hadn't had the time, so as he walked into the room, he glanced around to see if there was anyone else that he could at least have a chat with. Otherwise the night would get quite boring. That's when he saw her.
It was his best friend, Summer Lancaster. They attended Ilvermony together as well as shared the same house of Thunderbird which left them hanging out many times which led to their close friendship. The two of them had become close over the year they'd known each other, but they were just best friends.
Though she looked amazing. Her purple dress complemented her blonde hair and gray blue eyes beautifully. Leaving Dylan himself rendered speechless. He approached her as she was alone. Hoping that she didn't have a date and that he wasn't interrupting whatever she was doing.
"Hey, Summer. You look beautiful tonight. Do you have a date?" Dylan said with a smile as he approached. He hid his nerves as well as he could. If she had a date, he would leave, but if she didn't. . . well, Dylan didn't know what he was going to do. Probably something rash he would do on impulse rather than think it through. That's how he'd been ever since he had received the news a few days before that his grandfather had fallen ill again. A thought in itself that plagued his mind every day. But, for now, he would at least try and enjoy his night. ✽

𝓐s Pam’s hand slid into hers, Ruth couldn’t help but snort at the other’s comment. Unladylike, I know, but when was she ever? Her ethereal appearance mimicking the flutters of a butterfly did little to mask the Hufflepuff’s rowdiness as she teased back in a sickeningly sweet lilt, “Why, of course I do. Do you, perhaps, not?” She swept her free hand towards the glistening lake. “Fear not, madame Pam, for I, Ruth Isolde Fairchild–” she winked. “–would never let such a fine lady as you drown…” Ruth trailed off as she caught a split glimpse of Joseph, in all his violet glory, stumbling into a girl’s arms. She could only hope for two things: one, that he was alright. The second, well, not to slack off like he had. Goodness knew that if the same situation were to befall the two girls, they would be heading back to the common room with droplets sluicing off their forearms.
Without another word, Ruth whisked Pamela closer towards the lake, onto the fascinatingly illusioned platforms. It was a beautiful night. The stars dusted the sky and decorated Ruth’s forest green iris with sparkles as she spun her best friend onto another platform, then another. The serenity was inexplicable as her baby blue billowed to the sway of her hips, grazing the lapping dark water and staining the hemline a Prussian blue.
Ruth wore her usual ballet flats, the ones that she had worn to the Spring Ball. It was how she knew it wasn’t the shoes that had elevated her technique, but more so, herself. Where it had been just a careless cacophony of splaying limbs and tangled legs, it was now more graceful, practised. The butterfly clips in her hair flitted ever so slightly, diaphanous wings glinting with the sheen of the moon.
But then. Mid-step, Ruth heard the gramophone falter. With the stuttering melody, so did her step.
There it was. The incident felt almost cliché and predictable, and the Hufflepuff barely missed Pamela’s foot as dulcet tones engulfed the two girls. Ruth opened her mouth to apologise, but the mellifluous melody was entrancing and banished her train of thought. All of a sudden, she was on her knees, fingers lingering on the surface of the wine-dark lake before the siren voices halted, jolting her out of the hypnotisation.
Bloody hell? Ruth had barely gotten the chance to comprehend what had just happened, as the lights went out just as instantaneously. In mild panic, she groped around blindly for Pamela. “Pam?” She croaked, just as the lights sprang alive once again, leaving Ruth staring up at her.
Woops. She let out a sheepish laugh and scrambled up. “Sorry. How are your toes?” The disorientation had left Ruth wondering if she had actually stepped on the girl’s shoe. “If I stepped on them, that is.”
Her uneasy smile strained at the sight of Pamela’s nervous glance. “I’m…I’m sure that was nothing,” she babbled. “Why wouldn’t it be? I’m sure the organisers would have made it safe.” Oh, who was she kidding? This was Hogwarts. Ruth let her shoulders slump. It was foolish to act ignorantly. “No. That was something.” She slipped out her wand, lips stretched into a grim line. “We should get out of the lake.” The voices had come from around them. Safer on land, though, there was quite a way to go before arriving back at the damp grass. They had strayed a little further than she had thought.
As Ruth began leading the way, she pointed her wand at the water. “Lumos,” she murmured. There was something in there. Even if the light didn’t help, it would still be a reassuring sight in case the darkness plunged once again.

Azzure leaned back in her chair, smiling at the new face that it was a nice change of pace to be able to meet a new person, maybe they could be friends–– Maddy seemed like good company. Plus, her outfit was great, a perfect mix of pirate princess and ‘I’mma-beat-your-ass’.
Maybe tonight won’t be so bad after all.
“Hi! I’m Azz, if you’re not busy, would you like to sit with me?”
Azz looked at the girl, her eyes kind as she tried to size up what type of personality Maddy might have. She was one of the only people Azzure didn’t share a class with, but judging from her build, she didn't seem that much older than Azzure.
Azz was only starting to warm up to Maddy when from the corner of her eye she caught a glimpse of jet black hair, the same one she had memorised every strand of, the same one that had curtained her in her most vulnerable moments. Her breath caught in her throat as Violence came into view. Azzure’s smile faded as she stared at bright blue eyes lit up the whole room, her smile wide as if it was any normal event for her–– as if she didn’t care that her arm was slung around another person. Azzure frowned as she took in the sight of Violence and Dennis on the dance floor. They seemed happy–– she seemed happy… She is happy.
Azzure barely noticed when the chair across from her shifted. Her gaze was lost in the moving lake, in the soft glitter of lantern light scattered across its surface. Everything felt muted— voices, laughter, even the music— as though the night were happening behind glass.
Azzure couldn’t pry her eyes away from the two–– she hated how Dennis flowed with every beat as if he was born in the midst of music itself. She hated how he held her without fear or worry, she hated how he looked at Violence with eyes that held a pool of promise and hope, she hated how he knew just exactly what Violence wanted without needing to ask–– and she hated how he was everything she wasn't.
Across the dance floor, under the cascade of fairy lights, Violence laughed. Her hand rested on Dennis’ shoulder–– he leaned closer, and Azzure’s heart stilled. The world narrowed to the space between their faces. And when their lips met, something inside her fractured — quietly, like a crack running through ice.
The music carried on. The crowd laughed. But Azzure couldn’t breathe.
She swallowed hard, her pulse thudding in her ears. If she’d been braver — if she’d said something, anything, back when it mattered — would Vi be kissing her instead?
It felt like her heart was crawling into her chest, suffocating her from the inside.
Azzure felt tears well in her eyes. The world around her blurred as she gazed at the two–– it killed her how happy they looked.
Her hands trembled beneath the table. She pressed her thumb into the ridge of her palm until it hurt. She needed to feel something solid. Something real.
Deep in her heart Azzure could still feel the billow of wind as she stood on the side of the great lake, when she closed her eyes she could still see Violence’s eyes looking at her with a gaze that carried more than the word care could encompass. She could still recount the first time they met, how they had clicked instantly in that stuffy classroom, how even when they hadn’t put a word to it yet, they held each other with such reverence that it was hard not to call it anything but love. Azzure remembered the spring soiree, everything that night felt like a blur, but the only real, tangible thing Azzure remembered that night was Violence–– her ocean blue eyes holding every unsaid word between them.
‘She wouldn’t have kissed me anyway.’
‘Because I’m a girl.’
‘Because she can’t.’
‘Because I never gave her the chance to try.’
Azzure remembered it and yet–– something about the way she looked at Dennis now, it felt like she was happier with him.
Azzure tightened her first, her nails puncturing her skin causing pain to flood her. Azzure was ready to leave the dance and pretend like nothing had ever happened. Violence was happy, she had no right to destroy that happiness because of personal wants. All Azzure ever wanted was to see Violence happy, and now- she got her wish.
Azzure was just about to turn to Maddy and ask her if she wanted to leave, when suddenly it happened. Dennis led Violence to a table across from her and Azzure’s eyes gleamed with hope. She knew it was bait, she knew Dennis wasn’t going to let Violence go that easily, she knew it and yet–– and yet her heart was screaming at her that for once, just take the leap of faith.
'An apology, that's all I needed to do.'
She could feel Maddy watching her, probably wondering why her smile looked so fragile. But Azzure couldn’t tear her eyes away from the image of Violence.
‘Hey, are you okay?’
Azzure’s head snapped to look at the source of the sound–– struggling to focus on Maddy as her gaze blurred with tears. “I-I’m sorry, just wait for me here. I have to talk to somebody” Azzure spoke, her words coming out like rapidfire as she quickly rose from her chair, giving Maddy one last apologetic nod before practically running up to the table across from them where Violence sat
Azzure slowed when she neared Violence, hastily wiping the tears from her eyes. She stopped as she reached the table, her heart stuttering as she called out to the girl who had once shown her that love could still bloom, even after the worst fires.
“Vi?” Azzure asked, her voice soft, uncertain. She wasn’t even sure if Violence would recognize her—not with her hair grown long, not after everything.
When Violence turned to look at her, those ocean-blue eyes met hers, brimming with something Azzure couldn’t name. Agony. Relief. Maybe both.
Violence opened her mouth to speak, but Azzure shook her head quickly. If she let her talk now, this conversation would never end.
“Please—let me talk,” Azzure said, drawing in a shaky breath, willing herself to stay steady.
“Violence, I—”
Azzure trailed off as the gramophone began to stutter, the melody snagged on itself, warping, choking, before falling silent altogether.
Then soft, distant voices. Not the crowd. Not human. They rose from the lake, notes that sounded like home. The screaming and wailing of her servants as they burned in that mansion, the indignant silence of her Mother and father as they accepted their fate.
The voices rose, layered and beautiful — and then, as if the world itself exhaled, the lights went out.
Darkness. Total and consuming.
Azzure’s breath vanished. The air itself seemed to shrink, pressing in from all sides. Her hands shot out blindly, grasping for the edge of a table— anything solid. But her fingers brushed a glass instead.
The shards of the glass scattered themselves as they shot out, one of the pieces grazing Violence’s ring finger, while the other slashed against Azzure's wrist. The shatter was deafening in the dark. The sound sliced through the air— sharp, final, like the crack of burning wood.
And suddenly, she wasn’t at the party anymore. She was home again.
![]() |
The air thick with the stench of burning flesh and smoke— her lungs clawed for air that wasn’t there. Azzure staggered back, clutching her wrist to her chest. Her pulse thundered in her ears. The dark was alive — she could feel it, pressing against her like the fire once had. “Stop—” she choked, though she didn’t know who she was talking to. Azzure’s throat closed. Her reflection in the broken shards of glass were distorted, uncanny. The gramophone croaked back to life, its tune skipping and warped. Candles flared, string lights flickered back on. It was over. But her body didn’t know that. |
Then something moved in front of her–– crouching down beside her. A hand, warm and careful, brushed against her arm, She didn’t need to see who it was. Her body already knew.
Without thinking, Azzure leaned into the warmth, her forehead pressing against her shoulder. A choked sound escaped her, as she leaned against Violence for comfort.

For a moment, Lucille forgot about her fears, dancing with Fred. Or something close to dancing. Her movements contained all the energy of a cheerleader, but her laughter when he stumbled often interrupted them. Still, it was all in good nature, and as time went on, her limbs grew less stiff, movements freer, feet moving without their former hesitation. Once she grew attuned to the music, her steps fell in sync; she wasn't a bad dancer certainly. The more she moved, the more solid the ground felt.
And then it happened. It seemed to have been designed specifically for her, calling to bring back her former discomfort and uneasiness. The gramophone crackled to a halt, the music freezing, and she froze along with it, pausing mid-step. Had it been silent, it would not have been so unnerving, but, of course, this was Hogwarts. Unnerving tended to describe almost every incident here. Sure enough, calls began to rise from beneath her feet. They were sweet, but haunting, and getting ever closer. Lucille gripped Fred's hand tighter, staring at the floor once more, trying to see an interruption in the waves. Her mind conjured images of something jumping out, breaking through the floor, and dragging her down into the depths. This must be how a fly feels when lured into a Venus fly-trap, she thought to herself. A beautiful haunting lure, but there's just something about it that feels a little off.
But then, just as suddenly as they had started, they stopped. The gramophone resumed, and Lucille tried to calm her nerves, focusing on the music. She closed her eyes, taking a deep breath, too nervous to continue dancing now.
And then the lights went out. Lucille felt a squeezing in her chest, as if a a hand were gripping her heart tight. Her heartbeat increased rapidly, until all she could hear was it thudding in her ears. The creatures from the lake were going to come up and seize her now, she was sure of it. Was this really what Hogwarts would be like? Even their balls and events caused panic in your soul. And Lucille, for one, was not a panicky individual. In fact, things rarely scared her. Even before this night, she had only had a mild discomfort of water, but now it was beginning to feel as if memories of the autumn ball would haunt her for the rest of her Hogwarts days. Nothing will happen. Everything is fine. Lucille closed her eyes, although she couldn't see anything in the first place. The moonlight shone down on the lake, but her eyes hadn't had time to adjust. She felt as if she was succumbed in total darkness, only using Fred to anchor herself once more.
The lights returned, and the only indication she had was the brightness behind her eyelids. The sudden harsh light made her flinch a little, but she opened her eyes nonetheless. Nothing had changed. In fact, it looked as if this entire fiasco had taken only a moment, but her fear had been adamant on stretching it to feel far longer. Lucille let go of Fred's hand, crouching down to touch the floor, gazing through it to the waves beneath. Fred commented that the dance floor was still standing, and it seemed Lucille needed to peer at it closely to confirm.
"If this is the first test, I don't know if I can manage the other ones," she said with a dry laugh, as if trying to joke but just being a little too tense to do so. Slowly, her rapidly beating heart steadied, and she began to relax. As she did so, a laugh escaped her, a real one, perhaps out of relief, perhaps at her reaction. "I can't believe I panicked so much over nothing," she said, rising up off the floor. Her eyes met Fred's again, and it seemed as if she had forgotten all about it already. But had she really? Certainly not, but she didn't want to ruin her night with stress.

| 𝓥iolence's eyes widened. Was Dennis coming closer? Or was it a trick of the light. Perhaps they were standing in a place where the candles reflected the brightest. Violence looked around, anywhere except his eyes. And then she felt it, his hands moving from her waist, upwards. Goosebumps pricked her skin and all of a sudden, his hand was on her face. A deep shade of red settled on her cheeks and she hesitantly directed her gaze towards him, a soft whisper leaving her mouth, "Dennis-" and his lips crashed on to hers. Violence froze. Her hands froze mid-air. She coul feel her heart racing. Hear it blaring through her eardrums as she felt his lips move on hers. And unknowingly, Violence found herself kissing him back. Her hands slowly going up to his shoulders, before he pulled away and she was brought back to reality. A split second was all it took for her lips to feel empty. And then, the ghost of Azz's lips haunted her, and she was taken back to all those months ago in the hospital. Violence looked at Azzure, holding her hand as she was lying on the bed. "I miss being able to walk with you. I miss you, Azz." Her eyes fluttered open, and Violence jumped up, "Hey, hey, hey. Can you see me? NURSE!" She shouted, and a nurse came rushing in to the bed. Moments that felt like infinity later, the nurse went and Azzure was conscious. Violence rushed to Azzure, her head falling onto her neck. She looked up and her face moved forward, and their lips met. It probably wasn't romantic to be kissed in a hospital, but Violence could not care less. "I was so scared, do you have any idea? My whole world felt like it was collapsing Azzure. Please don't die on me. Please don't leave." 'Me,' the word, although unsaid, was clear enough. A tiny chuckle, and she was brought back to the dance floor. No time had passed, Dennis probably didn't even notice the far off look in Violence's eyes. She blinked as he said something about not missing. His hand on her back led her to the snacks table. Azzure wasn't here. Violence was enjoying with Dennis. Having fun with Dennis. Laughing with Dennis. Dennis. Not Azzure. She mustered up all her energy and smiled at Dennis, not letting any emotions display themselves on her face. She nodded as he requested she save a dance for him. Dennis leaned in again and this time, he gave her a peck on her cheek as his hand squeezed her waist. Her muscles tightened. She was enjoying with Dennis, yet her body did not like being touched by anyone other than Azzure. She was engraved in Vi's blood, and Vi wasn't sure when she'd finally be free. Popping a grape in her mouth, she tried to calm her nerves. Her fingers were starting to feel normal again. A few more minutes and she would be perfectly fine again. She looked at the dance floor, looking at the people dancing. She smiled. Her eyes found their way to the water, and she got lost in the soft ripples at the lake's surface. The water always calmed her. And the moonlight dancing on the waves was a peaceful sight to watch. She took in a deep breath. 'It's okay, she's happy wherever she is. If she wasn't, she would have come to me, right? She wouldn't have let go of me that easily. Maybe she didn't want what we had. Maybe I had imagined it all. Maybe the kiss threw her off. UGH, Azzure, give me an answer to my questions. Actually you don't even have to do that, just come back to me. Please.' "Vi?" Violence sighed, and spoke out loud, "Great, now I'm hearing your voice out of thin air. If only you were actually here, I miss you Azz." She dropped her head down before looking up again and a shadow fell on her face. Her neck snapped and she looked at the person standing beside her. Snow-white hair, now falling down in waves, her fit. Blue. And slowly, her eyes looked up to meet hers. Her breath hitched, and tears pooled in her eyes. She couldn't take a breath in, it was as if her face had turned to stone. Her shoulders slumped, Azzure. The girl she'd spent months crying for, standing in front of her. She sniffed and took a deep breath in, beginning to let out all her emotions. "Please, let me talk," Her voice. Azzure was speaking. Violence could hear her. Her face scrunched up as she held her tears. The voice she'd been so desperate to hear, now right there. Her name rolled off Azzure's tongue and she let out a breath she didn't know she was holding. But just as she did, the song spluttered. Violence looked around. It was as if the Universe had glitched upon them meeting again. The moon's light suddeny didn't seem as bright, and the chatter died down as everybody looked around to see what was happening. It was as if the world had quietened down to let them speak, to let them voice every thought that had been on their mind, on the tips of their tongues now. Violence looked at Azzure again, but she seemed to have frozen. One soft click, and suddenly Violence became blind. What was happening? Why had everything suddenly gone dark? She parted her lips to call out to Azzure when suddenly a glass shattered, and a piece of it lodged itself in Violence's left hand, in her ring finger. She winced, as her hand shot out to grab her wrist before she realised, the the glass had shattered because of Azzure. Violence's eyes adjusted to the dark and she could see a small pool of blood on the floor. Her finger hadn't been cut so badly so where... "Azzure, oh my God, are you okay? Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck!" She held Azzure's wrist, her finger winced. But she could barely feel that pain, her concern was Azzure, not herself. The lights came back on and Violence was blinded before she looked at Azzure. She was shaking, as if having a seizure. Violence crouched down, pulling Azzure into her neck. "Hey Azzure, can you hear me? Shhhh, focus on my voice, sweetheart. I'm here, you're with me Azzure. Everything's fine. You're okay. Shhh." Comforting words left Vi's mouth in a string as she patted her head. One hand holding her body, she turned Azzure's face up with her left hand. Splashes of blood now smeared Azzure's face, but Violence had no other choice. Her finger was of least importance to her. She tried to take the glass out of Azzure's wrist, but there was too much blood flowing and her hands were trembling. She got up and found two glasses of water. She drank half from the first one and brought it to Azzure's lips to make her drink some too. Pouring the water from the other glass on to a napkin, she cleaned the blood from Azzure's hand, before attempting to take the shard out again. She was successful this time and she let out a deep breath. Gently wrapping the napkin around her wrist, she looked at Azzure. "Okay, I'm going to get you to stand up okay? We'll leave here and go someplace quiet. Alright?" She didn't wait for Azzure's response as she tried to get up. Her dress came in her feet and she tripped, falling back down. Muttering a string of curses, she finally got up and then bent forward to help Azzure up. How ironic, the first time they meet after so many months, they don't get to talk. And Violence hadn't thought twice before comforting Azzure. Her heart pained, and she winced as she tried to help Azzure out of the shipwreck. Her own leg had decided that this would be the perfect time to go numb, but she didn't care. She walked on, holding on to Azzure. It had taken her months to finally see her again. Violence wasn't going to let go so easily. | ||

MOD POST THREE
Worried frowns creased smooth foreheads as the music came to a halt, making the silence, by contrast, appear deafening. Only the whispers of breath could be heard above the ever-changing tide of the lake, some more tremulous than others. Hands found themselves under the moonlight, seeking comforting reassurance — or perhaps restraining the other from stepping too close to the shore. Indeed, inhuman chants rose from below the surface, curling their sweetened melody around the hearts of unwary souls and inching them closer to the enchanted depths.
For some however, the sudden cease of the melody caused steps to interlock, provoking a second memorable chute in a concert of laced ruffles (@ruth fairchild, @pamela graham). Delicate hands found themselves hoovering right above the surface of the lake, on the verge of following the promised delights sung by ambient voices. As the music resumed, confusion and disorientation were plastered on porcelain faces, guests having strayed from the event. In an attempt at finding their way back, light sparked at the tip of one's wand, creating a steady glow in this evening of unreliable sources of luminosity.
However, as if fate had decided to intervene and frighten further the merry hearts of dancers twirling about, lights went out in the following seconds, causing a second vague of terrors across the floating room.
Though whereas loving souls would inch closer in this sudden darkness, a lone one succumbed to the ambient fright, breath catching in her throat as she sunk to her knees, hand clutched tightly around her chest (@azzure solace). A sudden illness had wrapped itself around her mind, bringing her far from the lake and the still glow of the moon. Luckily, a princess came to her rescue, twisting the stereotypes by incarnating a true knight in black armor. The two aching hearts rose to their feet and stumbled out of the ball, bodies pressed tightly together in search of a warmth they only appeared to find in each other.
As to those who had chosen to remain perched on ocean-like platforms, the evening had only begun, and shadows lurking beneath the waves promised the small incidents were a mere mise en bouche.

Speech -- Thoughts
So, Ruth did swim after all. Perhaps the two girls could go swimming in the lake sometime during the year. She'd make it a point to ask Ruth later. It was always nice to go swimming with friends.
She shook her head fondly at Ruth's words, turning to follow her gaze in time to see a certain purple-clad boy tumbling into the arms of the girl he was dancing with. Pam couldn't help but giggle at the sight. You know it's real because movies show it the other way round. How amusing. Where's my popcorn?
But priorities. Pam squeezed her friend's hand in an attempt to bring the girl's attention back to her, fixing a look of utmost pain on her face as she said, "Ah, I see how it is, my esteemed partner has forsaken me for a fairer spectacle. Perhaps the young gentleman yonder now holds your interest, my Lady?"
Ruth led Pam closer to the Lake, and the latter watched with avid fascination as two layers of gowns twirled over something solid, the transparent platforms barely visible under the moonlight. The lack of visibility of the shoes made it seem as though they were indeed dancing over water.
It was an achingly beautiful night, the still waters reflecting the night sky, dotted with millions of tiny shimmering diamonds. If Pam hadn't seen the view before from the Astronomy Tower, she would've thought it was magic. The two friends never faltered, spinning from one platform to the next, closer and closer to the water, and for once, Pam didn't worry about falling into the lake. Is this what writers mean when they say 'Her body moved on its own'? Never thought I'd actually experience it.
She might have jinxed it. For as the gramophone faltered and the siren voices arose, a lot of things happened all at once. Her only piece of warning was Ruth's shoes digging into her own, before her best friend's hand had left her own, and the familiar warmth disappeared, and Pam stared in shock as girl practically leaned into the water. Mercifully, the song stopped just as the lights went out, and Pam came around to find Ruth blinking up at her.
"My... I'm fine." She muttered, confusion and shock playing their parts in her brain. What had just happened? Ruth... did she just get hypnotized? Why hadn't that happen to her too? "Are you alright?"
Ruth was clearly not very alright. The girl lead her off the platforms, towards more visible solid ground, and Pam swallowed as she watched Ruth's back. " Are you sure you're alright? Do you want to leave?" She asked her softly, "We can move over to the ship. Or go back to the dorms too." Honestly she would've preferred to dance a little more. The night had barely started out, and the place was way too pretty and was still calling her back. Nevertheless, it was fine. First, getting Ruth somewhere dry and without hypnotic singing that could make her drown sounded like the better plan.

The dance went smoothly - for about five and a half milliseconds. Then Joseph’s clumsiness took the stage, announcing the start of his epic trip-fest. His dance partner looked too thrilled to care.
Legs buckling, Joseph stumbled forward, clutching her hand like it was driftwood for a drowning man.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” he said, shuffling back as Lindsey helped him regain his footing. “Uh… thanks.”
He swallowed his pride. Unacceptable. He was a pirate! Not just any pirate, Captain Joseph, terror of the renowned Sea of Non-existence. What would the clownfishes say when they learnt he couldn’t even perform a simple jolly jig?
He adjusted his violet pirate cloak, cheeks burning. “M’apologies.” Joseph bit his lip, gingerly taking the girl’s hand again. “C’mon, let’s-”
His voice was cut short as darkness enveloped them. Silence. Someone screamed - a shrill, high-pitched shriek of terror. Then Joseph realised it was him.
On seven scallywags, it’d be better to walk the plank than die from embarrassment.
He glanced down at the shifting dance floor, his face coloured so red any passer-by would mistake him for a scarlet macaw. His pet rock, Astra, peered at him through her fluffy parrot costume, eyes shining with clear disapproval. Great. Just great.
Clearly the ball committee loved making Joseph’s life miserable.
The lights flickered back on, cueing a ripple of confused whispers about the sudden black-out. Probably hazarding guesses on who the cowardly maniac with dark-o-phobia was. He wondered how many votes the stupid pirate in bright purple had.
“Well… that was unexpected,” Joseph muttered, a bead of sweat trickling down his neck. Act normal, nothing happened. Nothing happened. He was in control.
Fumbling forward, Joseph tugged his tricorne lower. He had to hide his sheepish expression. Keep it together. He stole glances at the other dancers, namely, his friends, Pam and Ruth. The girls giggled and chattered away as they swayed at the edge of the water. Clumsy. But still standing at least. Still an upgrade from Joseph’s ‘Disaster’ status.
He planted his feet hard every step he took, his eyes darting between the floor and Lindsey to ensure he wasn’t trampling on her. Ten steps without tripping! A new record!
It took a while, but Joseph finally found his cadence as the music swept him away.
“Sorry, I’m a horrible dancer,” he said, synchronising his steps to match the slow rhythm. Horrible was an understatement. He looked more like a giant elephant trying to perfect complex ballet poses.
