date place tags wc speech 04/10/25 The Autumn Ball @Leo Noxley 597/200 #36563cIt was about time to leave; Leo must be waiting outside the Gryffindor Common Room. Rosaline was all set, and she stood up. Walking toward a full-length mirror in the corner, she wanted to check her outfit again. She wore a white gown overlaid with delicate tulle. The most eye-catching feature was its cinched waist, adorned with a small blue satin bow. Rhinestones on the gown shimmered under the light as she turned around to look at her hair. One side of her hair was gathered into a loose braid secured at the back of her head, embellished with star-shaped silver accessories. The rest of her hair retained its perfect curls as usual, cascading down her shoulders. She lifted her skirt slightly, checking her shoes and other jewelry. The shoes were studded with gems, and pearls decorated the laces. The necklace and earrings were specially chosen, both adorned with aquamarine stones. They matched perfectly with the ocean theme of the Autumn Ball. She finished checking, returned to the corner where she had prepared for the ball, picked up her perfume from the table, and sprayed some on her wrists and neck. The fragrance carried a sweet rose scent, evoking the very moment a flower comes into full bloom.
She tugged a strand of her hair behind her ear, ready to meet her date tonight. She waved goodbye to her companion, who had helped her so much with the preparations. They had a wonderful but also busy time together. She pushed open the door leading outside. Her heart quickened with excitement, wondering how Leo would react. She felt she’d never dressed up so carefully before. Rosaline spotted the Ravenclaw boy at first glance. Leaning against the wall, he wore a striking royal blue blazer with a white shirt tucked into his pants. It suited the ocean-pirate theme of the ball. She greeted Leo with a warm smile, “Hello, Leo.” When she heard Leo’s compliment, her heart suddenly raced wildly, her face flushed crimson, and she completely lost her usual composure for a moment. She quickly regained her poise, though a flush still lingered on her cheeks. She murmured with a soft voice, “You look rather dashing yourself today.”
The Gryffindor could feel that Leo was blushing too. He offered his arm to her, and she gently took it. The early autumn evening air had grown rather cool. Yet as the two walked arm in arm, the chill within the castle dissipated. Rosaline glanced at Leo’s face and noticed that the color of his eyes had turned a light pink, just like the first time they met at the Summer Camp. Even though there were still many students around them, she felt as if she had returned to that afternoon, to that moment of quiet when it seemed like no one else was around.
They walked fairly briskly and soon reached the edge of the Great Lake. The moon was high up in the sky, and the moonlight reflected upon the lake’s surface. Rosaline lifted her white skirt gently and walked up the gangplank. The ship was majestic and magnificent, filled with genuine, timeworn decorations. Though she wasn’t familiar with the history of this ship, she could still tell there must be mysterious stories behind it. She curiously looked around, seeing some acquaintances, friends, and people she thought she had seen before yet hadn’t had a chance to know. Leo asked her where she wanted to sit. She answered, tilting her head slightly, “Maybe there?” It was a relatively quiet corner, but not too far from the livelier areas.

Dennis managed to relax a little more listening to his date. For not knowing much about each others, their circumstances seemed remarkably similar. “I don’t find you irritating, Violence,” Dennis said sincerely a warm look in those emerald eyes. “You share freely without hiding. I…have come to really admire that.” At least he finally met a girl that wasn’t all mystery and needed to be decoded with secret missions to unravel her life. “You say what you mean, I really like that,” he gave her another warm smile and squeezed her hand with his.
The moment of genuine connection evaporated though. After confessing who the girl was that was staring at her at the last ball, Violence, perhaps unknowingly, directly pointed to her this time. Dennis blinked unsure of if she realized she was indeed pointing at Meyra Lancaster. He decided it was best just to let it go. He gave make a knowing look, a shrug, and a slight wave. Try not to be awkward about this - you asked the girl you danced with last time directly after a very meaningful dance with Meyra to this ball. These things happen all the time! Right!?
Dennis made an attempt to turn away from Meyra as she continued about first loves. A sharp pang wrapped his heart for a pregnant moment. He sincerely doubted that Violence had such a whirlwind semester with whoever it is she was alluding to. Trying to makes the pain with an understanding smile, it looked more like a cross between a grimace and a sign he might need the bathroom.
Luckily, the very animated and assertive Violence, didn’t let the awkward moment hang and seemed to also have the intention of leaving that all behind them. “I thought you would never ask!” Dennis grinned, shedding off all the feelings from the moments prior. Taking her hand, he walked off to the dance floor as if that was a lifeline away from a past he couldn’t shake.

Kafelé led Aisling to the tables and they both sat down still holding hands. Aislings hand was soft and warm alot like her personality she was very shy but very kind. He hadnt expected her to grab his hand initially and it caught him off guard. Now though her hand in his was comforting. Kafelé was admiring Aisling when she began speaking again. She asked how Kafelé found out he was a wizard. Kafelé thought back to thise days when he was bullied. As he recalled the events of that day Aisling tucked a curl behind her ear. Revealing her full face Kafelé forgot what he was about to say. Aislings freckles were highlighted with blush cheeks and her blueish-green eyes sparkled in the light. Kafelé's heart fluttered as he swallowed and said "You look nice. Pretty! Beautiful!..... im sorry i think you look beautiful tonight..." he struggled with his compliment and hoped she didn't notice. His face went flush and he gently gripped her hand absentmindedly. "I... c..can tell you still. I..if you still w..w..want. About me l..l..learning i w..was a w..wizard." he stammered out. He felt so daft like she must think him a total muppet. He hung his head slightly and let out a sigh. He took a deep breath and braced for Aislings response. Looking at her he gave a her a soft smile

Aisling's face grew rosier at Kafelé's compliment. She couldn't help but smile at him. "Oh," she said, "thank ... thank you." She felt his grip on her hand strengthen slightly. For a moment, Aisling was sure her heart skipped a beat. Why was she feeling this way? She disn't think she felt nervous. That was the closest she could describe it. Aisling wasn't entirely sure, but describing the feeling as anxiety wouldn't be right. Anxiety for her felt like her body and mind were on edge. Lookinh at Kafelé's golden-brown eyes gave her some kind of reassurance, the kind that wasn't there when she was anxious. So what on Earth was she feeling? Or was she going mad? Aisling mentally shook off that idea. She was positive it was just her being hungry, and thankfully the first course was about to start.
Aisling heard Kafelé stammer again, as if he was unsure to tell the story about him discovering that he was a wizard. A soft chuckle escaped her. "Of course I want to hear about it," she said, "I want to learn more about you." She paused for a moment. "And I ... I haven't seen you since we met back in the Common Room a little while back," she said, "I missed ... I missed talking to you."

No one had talked the red-head into going to the ball. Rather, someone would have to talk him out of not going. It was the highlight of the fall term so some students said. Not so hushed whispers had filled the halls for weeks on end and Blaize had decidedly owled his parents asking them to send over some of his clothes. He hadn't had much casual attire in his closet, at least not things that suited his parents standards. It was made up of sweaters, flannels, and various colors of slacks. Not-so typical young boy wear, but he would not be caught dead in humiliating striped or cartoon-printed clothes. Not even his pajamas.
That being said, he wanted to stick on theme. Something about a sunken ship and the Great Lake. So, ocean themed more or less. The boy made quick assumptions green, blue and possibly purples would take shape at the ball not to mention the more neutral tones of blacks and whites. The one doubt he had was the formality of it all. It was a large event, school wide even some professors might attend or be forced to attend and monitor sure chaos that would break out. But this was a chance to see some upper classmen, see how they did it and who all actually was a part of his house and this massive institution in general. He hadn't seen the whole school together since his Sorting Ceremony which had been a month ago by this point. How quickly time had flown.
The night of the ball, the boy decided on a loose-fitting, cream-colored crew long-sleeve shirt with an open tailored navy-blue suit and slacks to match. The shoes were a coffee brown, lace up and he decided against a watch, cufflinks, or any other accessory else he'd fidget with it all night. His red hair.. well that was another story. Nothing could be done to tame the curls. In a few years time, he hoped the sorted themselves out and turned to waves as his father told him they would. Taming them the best he could with a brush, to not make them all frizzy, he'd haphazardly slip off towards the ball which was already in full swing.
Being late was not on his to-do list but again he scratched his brain for how this ball even got put together let alone a start or end time. He would surely head out when he got bored of people watching or tired. Upon closing the distance to the Great Lake, he was spot on with the colors, but some people were dressed up way fancier than himself. He silently cursed at the thought. Better over-prepared than under he was always taught but without a date, there was no way he was being caught dead in a full tuxedo. Not at his age, he would look a little too "pureblood-y" for his taste. That didn't matter tonight.
Taking a quick peek around after entering, his eyes landed on absolutely no familiar faces. Go figure. He'd make his way aboard the ship, careful of his footing as this thing felt rickety to say the least. He'd glance at the tables that were arranged in a makeshift ballroom/dining room mix of sorts. Blaize's hand instinctively reached out to pick up the letter and read what was written on it for any clue into what would be occurring tonight. There were other locations, he believed he heard but this seemed to be the main area where people were entering the most, meaning if anyone did come in and save him from boredom, this would be the best shot at it. After reading the cheesy note, written by a weirdly named Bartholomew Vane, whoever that was, he'd set it down and make his way over to the edge, near a railing. Testing his weight on it with his palms, he'd lean back, hearing a soft groan of the wood, not an alarming noise but one that would surely draw attention his way.
Speaking of attention, a girl in a navy-blue dress caught his gaze. With a beige waist sash of some sort he'd snort in amusement, pointing out to her.
"You stole my color theme." Of course it was a rude remark but that was often the first impression he gave, unfortunately. She looked familiar, young too. Perhaps a class? He hadn't paid too much attention to her face, granted she wasn't looking at him. Perhaps she too enjoyed people watching and came alone. One could only assume so many things about a person they just met who hadn't spoken a word to them yet. And maybe she wouldn't given his tone.

It pleased Harvey when Tatiana smiled in return. He had stood still for the moment it took her to look him over. It was only human nature to study other people, so he didn't mind that, but every once in a while the features that marked him part-goblin would draw the ire of some. There was no point in trying to hide what made him different assuming he wanted to. The tipped ears, short stature and domed shaped head gave him away to most, but Harvey was not ashamed of his unique attributes. The boy was raised to be proud of his heritage and that he was. A union of wizard and goblin had created within him a nature that so few possessed. Magical power was drawn from a mix of DNA rooted in the arcane for centuries, perhaps millennia. However, it was still nice to be accepted by your peers and Tatiana's welcoming smile put him right at ease.
"Thank you, I designed the outfit myself." Harvey was a confident young lad and had no qualms when it came to bragging. Some didn't care for it, but that never seemed to bother him. Cockiness aside, the boy was hoping to flaunt his outfit tonight not just to fish for compliments. He had been putting a lot of work into his clothing designs and had really taken to the art. An amateur still by any means, but any validation only furthered his desire to create. Perhaps one day there would a dresses out there with his initials emblazoned on the tag. Oh, who are you wearing? Is that a Barrows'? The boy could dream anyway.
"How are you enjoying the evening so far? Quite the theme they've chosen for us. Not necessarily my cup of tea, but impressive nonetheless. May I offer you a beverage or any other refreshments?" He was doing his best to try an remain a gentleman, but his intrigue in her would soon have him prying. "So, stop me if I'm being too forward, but you remind me an an acquaintance of mine, Stella Mims." There was almost an magical aura to their appearance. A beauty beyond that of human. "Might you be a half-breed as well?" Harvey spoke the last words in a whisper that only the two of them would hear.

Kafelé gave a silent sigh of relief, he had fumbled with the words but his compliment was well met. Still a bit nervous after his outburst he straightened up in his seat. As he did so he caught a wiff of the appetizers in fromt of them and swore he could smell pumpkin spice. Brushing the thought off he looked to Aishling who had expressed she was still interested in hearing his story. She mentioned that it had been a while since they talked. It was true they had only seen eachother in passing of late and he had wanted to reach out. His studies had kept him busy trying to get ahead on his schoolwork though. He breifly wondered how Aishling's studies might be going. Suddenly he realized he had been staring into Aishlings eyes this whole time without speaking. "Oh..... im sorry. You asked about me becoming a w..wizard." hoping he hadnt been staring long he began. " Lets see.... I was around eight years old. I had been out in the forest silently watching some adorable Gold Crest Finches forage for nest materials. I was on my way home and saw the stream at the edge of town. I wanted to play in the water and had to take my hat off. Mother would be miffed if i lost if again." he chuckled softly before his expression became slightly more serious. He nervously moved his thumb back and forth along her thumb. "I dont talk about it much because i hurt some kids. It scared me so much when it happened. I was playing and some bullies happened across me. They were making fun of my hair and had shoved me into the mud. I was angry and frustrated and i didnt know what to do...." He paused briefly to stop himself from tearing up. He swallowed before continuing. " So i screamed, for help or out of frustration i don't know. All i know is it was like the air around me rippled and burst out. It knocked all the boys onto the ground and i ran as fast as i could. When i got home my mother comforted me as i explained to her what happened. My father overheard and was elated i was a wizard. My mother sat me down to explain that even though i had magic i still needed to forgive and practice restraint. Im sorry its a bit of sad tell." He finished his story rubbing his nose with his free hand. He looked to Aisling hoping she would not think less of him for hurting those boys in Dedham.

Aisling frowned as Kafelé told the story. She knew that there were kids taunting him back home. She didn't know that they decided to go past verbal bullying and straight into physical. "I'm really sorry about that," she said as she held his hand a little tighter, "they ... they shouldn't have done that to you." She paused for a moment. "For ... for what it's worth," she added, "those kids ... they deserved it. I know your mum was a bit nervous and I get why. But they where attacking you. You needed to defend yourself." She shrugged. "And even then," she said, "you didn't know you could do that. That was ... that was kind of out of your control."
Aisling's eyebrows furrowed when she saw his golden-brown eyes well up with tears. "Oh no," she murmured, "don't cry." Her thumb ran over his knuckles. How could she tell Kafelé that he was going to be okay here now? Would he even believe her? After all, when they first met, he did try to hide his hair. But their other friends agreed with Aisling: the right people for Kafelé would like him for who he was, including his hair.

Mikey couldn't quite put his finger on whether it was the music, the dance of the lanterns to the peaceful rhythm of the lake, or just Avery herself standing next to him. Whatever it was, something was tamped down, like they were suspended between a tale and a dream. Her gentle tugging on his hand grounded him and held him in place in that moment more firmly than anything else could.
He smiled, the friendly kind of smile that never worked for him. "You know, if you keep telling me things like that, I'll start to think that I clean up well." His laughter was smooth now, the nervousness wearing off into the thrum of the evening. "You're being far too kind, though. You look like you emerged from the moonlight in a fairy tale.".
He clutched her hand a little tighter before sweeping the ship with his eyes. The deck stretched out before them like a stage, rope loops at the bases of masts, rusty chandeliers sending golden halos over white tablecloths, and blue-glowing glass containers along the rail. The old record player in the corner emitted a faint crackle before the violin began, and laughter wove itself into the music. He could taste lemon, salt, and something sweet, like sugar heating up, that he couldn't quite identify.
This is crazy," he said. "It actually feels like we're on the water. If there is a Kraken that rises up, I'm faulting the set design for being too realistic." The boards creaked and he allowed his shoulder to graze hers as if maybe that would assist him in maintaining balance. "If we do get submerged, I'm making you Captain. I'll be the dashing cabin boy who brings comic relief and encouragement.".
They walked down the railing, as if speed would shatter the illusion. "I'm glad you're here," he said, softly. The kind of truth that required no filler. "Last year I assure you I spent half the ball being nervous. This year I'm. still a bit nervous, if I'm being honest, but it's different." He looked at her shyly and smiled. "Better. Because it's you."
Two students swept past them, chuckling toward the tables where the first of the appetizers had just begun to appear, bowls of oysters on ice crushed to a froth, tiny toasts smothered with caviar, warm rolls that puffed when someone tore one open. Silver goblets shone in candlelight like tiny moons. Mikey's stomach performed a speculative little flip. He hesitated, thumb drawing across her palm in a loose, absent touch. "Or we can just stay out here a little longer. The lake, us, and the specters of Captain Vane's questionable life decisions." The record skipped softly to another song. Below, a pipe clanged, and the ship gave a creak like an old man rising from bed.
Mikey rested his arms on the railing and gazed out over the water, where the Great Lake silvered the moon back in slow shivers. "Remember that first time we ever really discussed anything?" he asked, glancing sideways at her. "I just kept thinking that I should come out with something witty. Couldn't do it then. Still can't, it seems." He snorted a laugh, warm and self conscious.
"But I promise you this, I will surely save you from all and any killer napkins, ghostly forks, and marauding bread rolls." His smile returned, this time gentler, more confident. "Whatever you want. I've got nowhere to go. We can sit and stare at people, or pig out on appetizers, or just. stand here and be us. It feels like the sort of evening you should take slow." He raised their clasped hands to his lips and kissed her knuckles hoping she wouldn’t think he was being too forward. "Lead on, Captain. I'm with you."
