Wizard Chess: The Gauntlet

Well Blaize had essentially ate his words about it being easy enough. The first round had already come and gone. The boy assumed not much would happen, but he was sorely mistaken. One member from each of the teams, the queens if you recall the position correctly had already got hit by each other. The board wasnโt even that big and that terrified him, especially when the other team started moving. Their own team opted for a safer route, staying huddled together around their queen who happen to be a rather short questionably egotistical part goblin boy. The boy, Clark was his name, reminded him fondly of Harvey Burroughs, but at the same time there was no friends to be made in this game. It was purely strategy and survival. This game with only one round of minimal movement and damage had definitely swayed Blaiseโs mind. If dueling was anything like this, and probably worse he wanted nothing to do with it.
His brain was unfocused, that much was certain. How was everyone else steam rolling these movements and actions so easily? The red-headโs brain short circuited. He just needed to be told what to do and where to go. Maybe strategy wasnโt his thing. A shaky exhale escaped him as he moved to a newfound position. At the back, out of harmโs way for now. The for now scared him. But he had to do his part and take any damage thrown his or anotherโs way. Thatโs what the rook did, right?
As most of his team moved in front of him, some closer to the enemy team than he felt comfortable with, the boy let out a sharp exhale. It was time to focus on what he could control. Granted, that wasnโt very much he would try his best.

Prat was having fun so far in the game, with his recently increased involvement in official sports within the premises of Hogwarts, the boy hadn't managed to find time for his own self as much as he had hoped. This game, despite it's shortcoming, such as the presence of one insufferable and sewer dwelling Baird was onto an almost amazing start if only the other side wasn't as good in their strategizing as they were. Mahl stood their ground as the king from Prat's side of the board, and honestly? It suited them, the title would fit nicely onto someone like them.
On the flanks mirroring Prat was Astra and this was probably the boards dream team duo, their own version of mj and pippen. If only Prat could get to knock Clark's head clean off during this game, he'd be most delighted no matter the outcome they end up with.
In all honesty, he planned on finding the annoying bug after the game and hang him by the moving stairs. This new form of entertainment he had first discovered during his stay at the baird household and clark was more than enough for a few hours of entertainment on a boring day.

October 2025, Duelling ClubThere was something exceedingly odd about a dozen teenagers standing on the black and white squares of a giant chessboard, even more so when all of them suddenly moved all together, some diagonally and others vertically -- a mess of shuffling feet and then quiet stillness as the players observed their new positions.
Despite being familiar with chess, this kind was still quite intimidating to Elisa even though she had gone through the rule books for more than a dozen times -- normal chess didn't have all pieces moving at the same time. This meant that though the primary movement rules were the same, the strategy involved was far different, and therefore left Elisa reconsidering her actions and staring blankly at the players around her in an attempt to figure out a strategy.
A few seconds of thinking and staring and she had realised that this kind of wizard chess was in fact very much different from what one could consider to be normal chess. When all players moved all at once, it was difficult already to keep track of all one's own teammates' positions, not to mention that there was no realistic way of predicting where the opposing team's pieces would end up. A few moment's deliberation (which included reciting a few paragraphs from the rulebooks) allowed Elisa to at least confirm that she was not in danger of getting attacked herself, though she could not say the same for some of her teammates.

ROUND 2 of 5

Round two, and wow, what a mess (in the best possible way). The first round was all tidy strategy and clever preplanning, everyone on-script. Now? Chaos. Cracks were showing everywhere, and Camilla could feel her excitement growing. THIS was real fun.
Blaize swooped in to reinforce the loud little goblin King, sealing Blackโs โhide the monarchโ plan. Across the board, Maisie, dependable as ever, shielded Mamori. While Astra, clearly expecting payback for Aodhanโs Gryffindor antics, jumped in to defend her teamโs knight with a pretty slick move.
Then things properly kicked off.

Gone were the straightforward Queen duels; now, it was open season. Duelling circuits loved clean matchups, but magical chess was chaos. Anyone was fair game, if you could land a hit through all those swirling spells and flying elbows.
Ara, the Black Queen, led with a shot at Aodhan (fair enough, honestly), and Astra leapt in with a ready defence. She leapt in with textbook defense, but turns out, she needn't have bothered: Araโs spell veered wide. Aodhan and Mamori, the white Knights, seemed to share a brain, with both counterstriking with such sharp, eagle-eyed timing that the Black Queen earned herself a few battle scars for her trouble. Not quite as spectacular as last roundโs battering, but every nick counts. Yikes.
Malcolm, usually the tactical prodigy, looked like heโd been stunlocked by the whirlwind around him. Ava, the seasoned Black Knight, seemed properly worked up thanks to Aodhanโs antagonizing. Honestly, Camilla wondered if taunting should be a legitimate game move. She made a mental note to practice her own smack talk. Unfortunately for Ava, her retaliation misfired. Literally. Camilla winced; thatโs one for the memorable blunders reel.
Amidst all the chaos, Livia launched a silent precision ranged attack aimed straight at Team Blackโs core, and it took Blaizeโs timely intervention to save their King from a world-class shot.
It wasn't all rainbows and sunshine for Team White, though. Just as Blackโs bunker defense left Ara exposed, but hampered their offense; Whiteโs own wide-open formation demanded levels of coordination nobody had quite mastered yet. The White Queen Archer fired off a dazzling line drive down the center, only to have Astra intercept it, too busy playing guardian to Aodhan to notice the incoming attack. Pretty Prat charged recklessly into enemy territory, but his team had not followed his charge, leaving him solo in a sea of Black. Elisa and Mamori, clearly operating on different playbooks, awkwardly bumped into each otherโElisa forging ahead while Mamori steadfastly holding his ground.
Black, meanwhile, was regrouping. Landon quietly patched up Blaize in the background, and Aislin, doing her best Livia impression, optimized her positioning with all the subtlety of an expert.
So, despite Team White's big plays and bold moves, they ended the round a bit tangled. The white Queen out of position, a lone rook stranded in hostile territory. Camilla leaned forward, half-nervous, half-thrilled. Was this a genius gamble, or just the setup for Blackโs grand reversal?

[Time Crunch, will word better later]
Prat was now stranded the farthest from his teammates as the boy had managed to pull through towards the other end of the board.
"What the fuck guys" he whispered before gazing over the now present tiles, looking for what the others were doing. He had managed to glance a few actions but nothing concrete beyond what he had been focusing on so far.
This was much to his dismay, the man that Prat was, only ever truly felt comfortable when he could control all the variables and knew all the outcomes, changes and mishaps that could happen.
His controlling nature had controlled and dictated his life choice for a huge part of his life, the signs of a man unwilling to hand the reigns of his life to anyone else. Simply for the reason that he did not deem them worthy.
The one time he had been alright with the idea, he was now here, stranded. But nonetheless, all hope wasn't lost, Prat wasn't about to walk off his teammates, mishaps happen and Prat was more than willing to see this forward before the fateful end of the game would see the white team winning over the others, He could almost visualize it, Clark's throne now overtaken, his crown on Prat's head, Clark's leg broken once again with the stick thing he held.

Now that the one person he trusted the most on this chessboard was the furthest away from him, life was going great for Archer. He glanced at Prat, now in the distance. He saw his lips move, though who was he to pretend to he could lip read?
What the fuck, however, was seemingly the correct response. Although he was probably not good enough of a chess player to judge, their moves were all over the place, and, from at least his limited vision, they had no concrete plan going forward. There was not, on the other hand, a secondโs moment where he could let that insecurity show. After all, he was a queen, and queens, in chess or life, were not meant to shed tears.
Damn. He was not focusing. Deciding to put whatever strength that existed to use, their most powerful piece standing around doing nothing was unacceptable. So, Archer trained his attention on the opponent knight, a Hufflepuff and younger girl, perhaps in his first year โ though that fact took nothing to his attack as a white hot line was fired down the middle. However, in a cruel turn of luck, it hit Astra instead, and at the catastrophe Archer could only manage out a, โMy bad!โ

Broom racing developed your reflexes, that much was certain. Your instincts as well. Astra's instincts told her that Ara's sights were on Aodhan so Astra swooped in to intervene. Ara was a powerful duellist , and not to knock Aodhan but Astra was older and probably more used to taking hits. She intercepted the attack with grace, kind of. At least she didn't fall. "You alright?" she called over her shoulder once she got her breath back. "And, ah, as for your question earlier, yeah. Knock the short guy out. Steal his crown if you want I guess."
There was so much happening around them. Astra found her attention split between her own team and the opposing. She should've been more focused, but alas, that was not one of her strong suits. Astra saw Livia was doing well, sniping surreptitiously from the sidelines, and the rest of her team moved like a well oiled machine.
She, however, as opposed to being the lucky charm, was the rusty cog.
Hit by two queens. Astra stumbled forward as a blast of magic hit her in the back. Hands braced on her knees as she regained her footing, she looked back at Archer's apology. "S'fine," she responded, rather weakly for yelling across a chess board. "My bad." Jesus.

This round was much more of a whirlwind, spells flying every which way, but not yet her way. Aislin's spot was good as a snail shell, protective and hidden, but not for much else, like the valiant defense efforts of her fellow Rook Blaize. She wasn't even out of the way with the strategic precision of the intense-looking first year girl acting as White team's sniper Bishop. But maybe she had time to find as good of a spot for herself?
While everyone else busied themselves with battle, Aislin stood still for several moments, tapping her chin as she considered her options and surveyed the board. Someone who knew her well enough might be concerned she'd inexplicably decided to check the area for bugs, bored of the game, but for once she was laser-focused. With what she knew about chess, where was the best place for her team's second Rook? As everyone else took their steps, she spotted it. There. A corner, straight paths along two edges of her team's cluster. Now she was separated from Black's tight formation and she rather liked the perspective granted by the angle. Where to go from here was her next puzzle, but she'd given herself options.

The action started and Landon got sucked into it. He didn't really know what was going on as well as the people who chose the strategy did, but he was enjoying the game either way. It was similar, yet different, to regular chess, so Landon was still learning the game as they played, but he didn't mind. He was having fun. So far it looked good for his team. He was proud of them. Even if they lost in the end, they would have played well, in Landon's opinion.
This turn, he didn't move, but he didn't mind that. He was standing strong in front of Clark, his position serving as a protector as the other members closed ranks around him. It was cool to see how the game was going. He looked over his shoulder, his eyes confused, as Prat went so far into Team Black territory, but he figured there was a strategy there that he couldn't quite figure out.
Landon turned toward Blaize to try and patch him up, as part of their strategy. He was always happy to help, and, while he had wanted to be a Knight initially, Landon was glad to be placed in the position he was in. Bishop suited him better than Knight. It reminded Landon of how he had been certain he would be a Ravenclaw, but then was placed in Hufflepuff. What he thought was right for him, turned out to be the wrong place. Bishop suited him, just like Hufflepuff did.
Landon looked around the board, trying to decipher what the next moves would be for both teams. He wasn't a strategist, so he wasn't sure what White was planning, but in his opinion, Team Black was doing better.
