Wizard Chess: The Gauntlet
Introduction
Wizard Chess transcends mere strategy; it is a test of endurance, loyalty, and might. Unlike the quiet intellectual battles of traditional chess, this version is a living, breathing contest where wizards embody their pieces, moving across the checkered battlefield with courage and cunning.
This is a game of honor and sacrifice, where every player fights not just for themselves but for their team. Originating as a spirited, unsanctioned challenge among young wizards, Wizard Chess has evolved into quite the spectacle: equal parts sport, ritual, and battle. The pieces are not mere tokens but champions powered by their wizard’s unique strengths and magical prowess.
The Essence of the Game
Teams: Each side fields eight players, each embodying the core chess pieces: one King, one Queen, one Rook, one Bishop, and one Knight; arrayed in a typical chessboard position.
Objective: KO the opposing King or outlast the enemy team by the end of five rounds.
No Pawns: The game focuses on the powerful core pieces, each with distinct roles and abilities.
Endurance and Loyalty: Success depends on teamwork, strategic positioning, and the ability to withstand and dish out magical and physical attacks.
Victory Conditions
Primary: Defeat the opposing King (reduce HP to zero).
Secondary: If no King defeated by round 5, the team with more surviving pieces wins.
Tiebreaker: If both teams have the same number of pieces, King with higher remaining HP percentage wins. If king has the same HP percentage, team with the higher team HP percentage remaining wins.
Piece Roles and Abilities
[♚] King: The Heart
- Movement: 1 space any direction; no moving into check.
- Passive: Exudes a powerful aura boosting all adjacent pieces' stats (except Stamina) by +1 per 5 Wisdom.
- Commanding Presence: Once per game, when an allied piece within 2 spaces would be reduced to 0 HP by an attack, the King can instead call out a command. That ally is left at 1 HP and immediately gains +2 to all rolls until the end of the next round. This does not work on the King themselves.
Note: This is a one-use ability. If the king uses this action and the target piece is not KO’d, Commanding presence is still used up without conferring any benefits. - Reckless Barrage (Arcane Power): Blast an adjacent enemy for 25 × Arcane Power damage.
- Hide Away (Priority): Move behind an adjacent ally, splitting incoming damage 50/50 for attacks targeting the King. Both roll evasion separately. Cooldown: 1 round.
- Movement: Any number of spaces horizontally or vertically, limited by movement cap.
- Rapid Defense (Priority): Move adjacent to an ally to intercept attacks aimed at them this round. The Rook takes all damage instead. Rook cannot move for this turn.
Note: Rapid defense can only be used to reach squares the rook can reach with their normal movement. - Shield Bash (Strength): Adjacent attack dealing Strength × 50 damage
- Toss Aside (Strength): Swap places with an adjacent piece (contested strength check if enemy).
- Movement: Any number of spaces diagonally, horizontally or vertically, limited by movement cap.
- Skull Bash (Strength): Adjacent attack dealing Strength × 50 damage
- Rebuke (Arcane Power): Activate an aura dealing 10 × Arcane Power damage to all adjacent enemies for 3 rounds, including turn of activation. Activating takes up entire action on first turn. May take other actions while active.
- Master’s Wrath (Arcane Power): Ranged attack along Queen’s movement lines, damage for 50 × Arcane Power, attack rolled at disadvantage.
- Movement: Any number of spaces diagonally, limited by movement cap. Can move through allies.
- Benediction (Stamina): Heal an adjacent diagonal ally for Stamina × 20 HP.
- Invocation (Arcane Power): Diagonal ranged attack through allies, damage for 25×Arcane Power.
- Intercession (Wisdom): Shield an adjacent ally for Wisdom × 10 damage, absorbing attacks until depleted or end of round.
- Movement: L-shape leap, 2-1 squares.
- Passive: if the Knight KOs a piece, it may take two movement actions this turn instead of 1.
- Slayer (Strength): Adjacent attack dealing Strength × 50 damage plus 10% bleed over 3 rounds.
- Crippling Blow (Accuracy vs. Evasion): Disable an adjacent enemy’s movement for 3 rounds.
- Eagle Eye (Stamina): Ranged attack on a point up to 3 spaces away in a straight or
diagonal line for 15 × Stamina Damage. Target rolls evasion with disadvantage.
Movement
Piece Movement Patterns:
- King: Moves 1 space in any direction; but cannot move adjacent to enemy pieces
(no self-check). - Queen: Moves any number of spaces horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Cannot
move through pieces. - Rook: Moves any number of spaces horizontally or vertically. Cannot move
through pieces. - Bishop: Moves any number of spaces diagonally. Can move through ALLIED pieces
but not enemy pieces. - Knight: Moves in an L-shape (2 spaces in one direction, then 1 perpendicular). Can
leaping over pieces.
plus 1 additional spot for every 2 points of wisdom. So a Queen with 7 points of wisdom
can move 3 + (7÷2=) 3.5 = 6 spaces.
Contested Spaces: Moving into an occupied space triggers a contested Strength check.
The loser is pushed back 1 space in the direction traveled or a random open space if
stationary.
Misc: some abilities from the King and the Rooks cause movement and shuffling.
Abilities
1. Advanced Casting: This extends the critical success range.
2. Blindvision: makes it possible to target a piece with a ranged attack that is behind an allied or an enemy piece. This does not override attempts to block/intercept attacks. This is done at -5 accuracy.
3. Charmer: this will effect all those not defined as allies.
4. Calming Presence: this will effect all those defined as allies.
5. Comprehend Languages: you have the benefit of the wisdom boost
6. Death Defiance: This does take effect the instant it happens, once per game
7. Evasive Maneuvers: Does as described.
8. Fearless: Does as described.
9. Foulplay: Required for users that decide to consume a buff potion prior to the game. While this would normally result in disqualification, users that have this ability can consume a potion prior to the match and "act normal" to have a minor advantage in the game. There will also be effects in task 2 and three. A user can only be under the influence of one potion at a time.
Potions that would effect the match:
Calming Draught Increases a user's wisdom by 2d2 for the game
Cranberry Cleaner: Passive 20 healing per round; this cannot exceed your maximum health. Once you are knocked out, this will not bring you back to consciousness.
Draught of Peace: Removes the chance for critical failure for the duration of the game.
Felix Felicis: 25% chance that all your strength checks and actions are done at advantage the duration of the game. This is rolled with every action.
Girding Potion: +1 to all stats.
Moon Seed Poison: Increases Arcane Power by 2d4 for the duration of the game.
Strengthening Solution: +1d6 strength for the duration of the game
10. Healing Sage: If this user consumes Cranberry Cleaner using Foul Play, in which case this would passively heal 35 rather than 25 per round. This also increases the effect of Benediction.
11. Lovely Creature: The duration of Crippling Blows done by the opponent team is reduced by 1 round. Damaging attacks done (Reckless Barrage; Shield Bash; Skull Bash; Mistress/Master's Wrath; Invocation; Slayer; Eagle Eye) do 10% less damage to the whole team (this is before any damage reduction is calculated).
12. Non-Human Enthusiast: ability works as stated.
13. Nonverbal Magic: ability works as stated.
14. Obnoxiously Strong: ability works as stated.
15. Paragon of Health: ability works as stated.
16. Perfectionist: ability works as stated.
17. Rapid Reviver: This can be used, it would be an action and requires the user to be adjacent to the intended target. This ability works as described.
18. Sixth Sense: ability works as stated.
19. Spell Spread: -2 accuracy, +1 critical range (rolled for each attack), the user can attack a second target with ranged attacks only.
20. Statistically Relevant: ability works as stated.
21. Terrible Presence: ability works as stated.
22. The Muggle Condition: has no effect in this task, it is very magical.
Order of Operations
1. King’s Hide Away
2. Rook’s Rapid Defense
3. Bishop’s Intercession
4. Rook’s Toss Aside
5. All aacks, simultaneous
6. King’s Commanding Presence
7. All movement, simultaneous
8. Damage from passives: Queen’s Rebuke; Knight’s Slayer bleed
9. Healing Effect
10. End of Turn Triggers

ROUND 0
A note to all players: The word count minimum is 200 words. The next deadline to post and submit strategy is 6 days, deadline should be around the same time as before and linked in Discord. If you believe a mistake has been made in the calculations of this round, please reach out to me ASAP so it can be addressed promptly.

And so the games begin. It was not everyday that Camilla found herself caring overly much about chess, of all sports -- she did very much prefer basketball herself. But today... well, today could be said to have been an exception. Because today, she would have the front row seats to a wizarding chess game. And it was hardly as boring as moving little stone pieces across the board.
She looked to both sides, a wide spectrum of people had shown up to make their participation felt, and she felt a twinge of pride at how many of the people who had show up were from her beloved House. Hufflepuff, for all of its strengths, did have a glaring lack of competitive viciousness that she had seen present in the other three Houses, and it pleased her to no end to actually see the badgers show up in force for once.
It took her a moment to realize that, as the officiator, these people4 were likely waiting on her.
"Right. Okay." She cleared her throat, trying to sound all official-like. "This is going to be one of the first Hogwart's Wizard Chess games. I expect to see good sportsmanship from all of you. Remember to ahve fun guys!"

That was how it should be, he should not be anyone’s pawn nor would he bow down from any other ranks. He needed to be the top, that was an absolute necessity and there were no alternatives that could be granted. Matter of fact, if he had to, he would wallop each and every person on his team if they declined him the role of King.
He didn’t have to say it, nor was he going to imply it, but maybe, just maybe, he did wallop them over the head. Then again, he maybe didn’t and just dreamed about it. Either way. He is the king and will remain the king.
Clark stared at the White King and murmured. Clark looked better. Clark at least was dressed to slay and reign. He thought about Prat showing and verbally growled. That damned fool had better not show. It would be a happier ending for everyone.
He really believed that. He took his position and rubbed his temple harshly. He was ready to fight. Indeed he was. Were they?Action: [deliberating]

duelling club

Allowing Archer to be the most powerful piece in the game was either a foolish decision or ran opportunity. Allowing, in this case, was not much of the right word either. It was not as if he had eagerly signed up for the position with the best moves. In fact, he had thought about volunteering someone more responsible, more tenured, anyone but him as the self-doubt crept in again. Still, he decided to see it as the latter: an opportunity. If not for him to have fun, then at least to sharpen his chess skills in reality and be productive with his damned life.
Unsteadily, he glanced to his right. The duelling club had never felt so unfamiliar as he did with the chess board beneath him, but with a good number of Viridian Vipers participating, his anxiety was marginally settled. Mahlioz as king, a duellist he knew by name and face but not quite by acquaintance, while Prat Pass and Astra Norrick stood off to the side as rooks. The two people he knew could have chosen anywhere to stand and they chose the farthest places away from him. It must have been personal.
Whether it was the trick of the light or actuality, the opposing team seemed stronger than them. But Archer had faced older opponents, and while it was a slaughterhouse, he had survived. This time, well, at least he had the Slytherin ambition to survive and win.

Wizard's Chess, in its far smaller, quite easily-manageable form, was one of Livia's long-held pastimes. Maintaining control over one side of the board, attempting to seize and conquer, all while defending her own pieces, had become an exercise in strategy that, so far, was unrivalled by anything the young girl had attempted. Upon receiving word of a fully human-based iteration of the game, she had immediately reviewed sets of rules and joined a team at her first opportunity. She had no expectation to be a king or a pawn, and, in fact, being a bishop for the team rather pleased her.
As a first year, she struggled to see what benefit she would bring to the team, but, when she arrived, her chestnut wand in her right hand and her hand-tailored 'athletic' robes flowing about her, she surveyed both her side and the other side of the board. The worst mistake she could make would be focusing on too small a region, but as a team, she should not be the one making the decisions. She glanced at her teammates, her green eyes scouring them for any perceived strengths and vulnerabilities, and then she narrowed her eyes at the other team. Her chin lifted slightly, an outward indicator of either self-assurance or haughty arrogance, and she held herself with the most stringently straight posture she could muster.
Although the sight of a few of her teammates—Archer, Astra, Prat—had sparked recognition in the young Slytherin, she did not have the same luck with the students on the other team. In fact, instead of a healthy reassurance of success, the only emotion that she could name was a quiet, barely simmering revulsion at the gaudiness of the middle boy's king costume. The regal lawfulness of the game of chess was not to be trifled with, and emotions were not to be involved, but she could have sworn she heard the boy growl. Such a feral nature on display spelled out a perhaps brutish approach from the other team, something that, should Livia's assumption prove veracious, could elicit a well-founded advantage for White.
Despite her aversion to outward displays of emotion, she could not stop herself from casting quick glances towards Astra and Archer, searching for a hint of recognition. Were she closer to Archer, she might have tossed him a quip regarding their previous encounter, which had also regarded chess. However, given her distance, she remained silent, and she ultimately settled on staring blankly, dismissively, towards the other side of the piste. The sooner they faltered, the better, she decided—she did not intend to let this first victory slip away from the reaching hands of her willpower.

super cool team name

Astra had come for simple spell practice earlier in the week, but instead found a chess game signup. Alright. She liked chess. She rolled her shoulders, cracked her neck, spun her wand from its holster as she approached the posts on the appointed day. In the absence of broom racing as much more than a hobby and in an incredibly odd place socially speaking, her days could be considered boring even with the extra classes. Heaven forbid.--
The redhead recognized several people across the board on both sides. As she should, being an older member of a younger crowd, the same crowd represented here. Only one member on her own team was a mysterious presence.
Astra set herself in rook position. She was one of the strongest on the team, especially since there were so many duellists present and not nearly enough broom racers, and rook was a strong post. Besides, who wouldn't want to be the rook? Plow across the board in one move, castle the king, arguably one of the cooler pieces lookwise, too.
Astra noted her fellow Mafia members, Polytropos and Wolf. One was her own soldier, and there he occupied the queen spot, regal and vicious. Mahlioz had been crowned king of the white team, and Astra was ready to protect them. A rift had grown between the redhead and her friend, and even if this was a game and they were on the same team, Astra would take otherwise unnecessary risks to prove to Mahl she wanted to be their friend still. All they had to do was give her a chance.
When Astra felt Livia's unnerving eyes on her, she looked past Aodhan, a younger Gryffindor whom she'd met trick flying (not very well, on either account), and shot the snakelet a wink. The younger looked almost bored already, staring down the other team into submission.
Astra cracked her knuckles as she surveyed the other team and their demon goblin king. If Ava were to catch her eye, Astra would give a nod. They may be teammates on the track, but out here there would be no quarter.

9 September 2025 (20:10 )A part of Ara questioned why she was with a bunch of first years and her roommate against another team where more than half of them were part of the Vipers -- Slytherin Dueling. It wasn’t the most ideal composition -- Ara had half a mind to call it reckless -- but she supposed that was part of the challenge. If this was Wizard Chess, then the whole point was being placed in strange, uneven positions and learning how to survive them. That didn’t mean she had to like it, though.
She was a fourth year now, someone who prided herself on control and competence. And here she was, standing shoulder to shoulder with children who still tripped over their robes on staircases. It wasn’t insulting, exactly, but it was strange. Ara let her eyes sweep the board. Wizard chess was supposed to be spectacle, endurance, teamwork -- but to her it was also image. Appearances mattered. She adjusted the fall of her cloak, letting the silver clasp gleam beneath the light, a little reminder that she belonged here regardless of who flanked her. Her posture was straight, her hands clasped lightly behind her back.
Wizard Chess. Not the quiet, dusty game Ara had half-heartedly played, but something much more alive. Here, she wasn’t pushing pawns with fingertips -- she was the piece. The queen specifically. Quite fitting actually. The hum of magic in the air prickled against her skin, the entire board thrumming like a heart ready for battle.
When the officiator cleared her throat and declared the match open, Ara’s eyes flickered briefly toward her. She looked like she was pretending at authority, like a child in too-big shoes. Ara almost smiled at the contrast -- how different it felt when you had authority you didn’t need to try for.
She inhaled, squared her stance, and rolled her shoulders once. It didn’t matter that she was with first years. It didn’t matter that the whole setup felt strange. The board gleamed under torchlight, the match ready to begin. Ara inhaled deeply, sharp and steady, before locking her gaze forward. She wore her usual black ensemble. The game had started the moment she stepped onto the field.

How did Landon get roped into this in the first place? He wasn't exactly sure, but he was a little excited about the whole thing. He wasn't happy to be on a team with Clark, but he wasn't going to let that stop him from trying his hardest not to let the team down. He was assigned Bishop, which was fine by him. He had kind of wanted Knight, but Bishop suited him much better and he was definitely looking forward to seeing what happened next. He wasn't that experienced in playing chess, but he loved the idea of it.
Landon wore a black leather jacket for this, to help show that he was Team Black, though Harper had chosen the look for Landon. Landon was more of a preppy casual sort of dresser, but Harper made him look tougher and more like he was representing the team. She always was quite the fashionista, so he wasn't complaining. Though the leather jacket felt a little over the top to him. He was usually just happy in his sweaters and jeans.
Landon walked onto the large chess board, wand in his hand. He moved his free hand up to ruffle his hair a little, feeling a bit nervous, but more confident when he realized that he was one of the older ones playing. He was grateful that they didn't have seventh years to play against. They would know so much more magic than Landon would and that would feel overwhelming. From what Landon could tell, everyone was fourth year or younger, and the teams seemed to be relatively evenly matched.
The match began with the officiator making an announcement, and Landon watched her as she spoke. He then glanced to his teammates, giving them a friendly smile. He knew a few of them outside of this, but not all of them. Landon nodded as he looked toward Camilla, to show that he had listened. Let the game begin!

Wizard Chess: The Gauntlet

Blaize had done it. What Archer suggested to do. To go and put himself out there. All the sports teams had waitlists, and he wasn't really keen on ending up in the Hospital Wing so early into the school year, yet here he was. Clubs would've been the smarter option, thinking back on it but his attention was grasped by the flyer he saw waving around the hallways, so between classes he snagged a looked. This supposed game was called Wizard's Chess. The rules were simple enough, you and a team come up with a strategy to dethrone the other team, with actions adjacent to chess. No spells, no flying. Easy enough, right?
That being said, he had no idea who any of the other folks were on his team. It was a few names scribbled in different handwriting, and they would all just show up together and attempt to do well? Sounded like an utter nightmare. Well, they'd have time to discuss strategies before and between rounds but knowing chess, things didn't always go to plan. He just prayed their team was logical and had backup solutions. As the boy arrived at the assigned location on the correct date, he'd exhale, trying to release the bundle of nerves that had built up inside him.
After a quick interaction with the host of the game, a younger girl by the name of Camilla Carter, he'd be directed to his side of the room to greet his team. Most of them looked young, although also older than him. That wasn't intimidating at all. He kept his lips sealed as small greetings and hushed whispers were exchanged, only to tilt his gaze over to hear the Hufflepuff girl's voice ring through the air signaling it was almost time to get ready and to have fun as a few more folks trickled in. Fun? We shall see.
