======= On 5 January 2014, Sophia Brown was born in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland, to the Irish half-blood wizard Breandán Brown and the English pure-blood witch Thora Ulvestrom. She was raised alongside her older sisters, Imogen and Charlotte, as Breandán and Thora pursued research into the origins of ancient magic. Sadly, in early 2017, Breandán died, and Thora fell into a deep sadness that she never completely recovered from. At her parents’ urging, she returned to her birthplace in Dartmoor, England, and entrusted the care of her three daughters to them.

Each daughter was sent to live with a different family member. Sophie was sent to Thora’s cousin Connie and her husband, Brynmor Haslam, in Richmond, England. Though deeply pre-occupied in the maintenance of lavish social lives, they are kind-hearted and generous guardians. Sophie grew to love them, and the memories of her early childhood gradually faded. She attended evening parties, was tutored by accomplished witches and wizards, and played with the Haslams’ infant son, Llywelyn. However, Connie and Bryn’s poor financial decisions eventually emptied the Haslam account, plunging them into debt and constant quarrels. Sophie’s tutors disappeared, as did the parties, and she escaped the household conflicts by reading in her room, wandering outdoors, or playing with the neighbouring Muggle children. Though life was no longer as grand, the Haslams remained loving, and Sophie remained happy.

Physical Description

Sophie is a plain and unassuming child of no beauty or grace. She has straight, dark brown hair that sits just past her shoulders, devoid of any volume unless the outside air twists and tangles it into a messy bird’s nest. Her features are sharp but for her cheeks that retain some childhood chubbiness, and are often formed into an emotionless or sullen expression. She is tall and despite her leanness is wiry and strong. Sophie’s green eyes are pale and her skin is pale too, cold and fair, although if she is outdoors, or particularly emotional, it quickly becomes flushed red.

Mental Description

Sophie is ruled by a sense of independence so strong she is determined to not be seen as incapable or ignorant. She refuses to blend into the crowd, and is unafraid to say as she believes. Her determination is admirable, but these traits quickly bleed into stubbornness and bull-headedness, and make it incredibly hard to carry a pleasant conversation, let alone a friendship. Despite this, Sophie has a strong moral code that she cannot compromise. She despises cheating, unfairness, and stupidity, and will call out any act that is such. She has a curious and quick mind that can sometimes aid her learning, but other times lead her to distraction. She is confident in herself and has a strange sort of faith (most certainly misplaced) that she is capable of something great. For all that Sophie could fear, darkness or screams or grief, the only thing that truly scares her is the idea that she might be, purely and simply, an ordinary person.

First Instance of Magic

Sophie’s first instance of magic occurred at the age of six. She burst into sobs upon seeing a baby bird fall from its nest, unsure how to help. However, after clearing her tears, she found the little bird to have mysteriously apparated back into the very nest from which it had fallen.

Phoenix Feather = This is the rarest core type. Phoenix feathers are capable of the greatest range of magic, though they may take longer than either unicorn or dragon cores to reveal this. They show the most initiative, sometimes acting of their own accord, a quality that many witches and wizards dislike. Phoenix feather

wands are always the pickiest when it comes to potential owners, for the creature from which they are taken is one of the most independent and detached in the world. These wands are the hardest to tame and to personalise, and their allegiance is usually hard won. = Apple = Applewood wands are not made in great numbers. They are powerful and best suited to a owner of high aims and ideals, as this wood mixes poorly with Dark magic. It is said that the possessor of an apple wand will be well-loved and long-lived, and I have often noticed that customers of great personal charm find their perfect match in an applewood wand. An unusual ability to converse with other magical beings in their native tongues is often found among apple wand owners, who include the celebrated author of Merpeople: A Comprehensive Guide to Their Language and Customs, Dylan Marwood.

Grades
Despite being born of two very intelligent scholars, Sophie does not excel at school. She averages an O.W.L. grade equivalent of Acceptance (A). Her favourite classes are Potions and Herbology, and in these she does apply herself (or she attempts to, and only on occasion) as she finds them interesting. Her least favourite classes are Flying and Transfiguration, the first she finds abysmally boring (although she does enjoy broom flying in a non-academic setting) and the second she finds mind-numbingly difficult. She plans to take on the electives Arithmancy and Care of Magical Creatures in Third Year. Sophie does not have any career plans at this time.

Her tattered copy of Macbeth = By William Shakespeare. The only book Sophie truly loves. The spine is cracked and the pages folded. She reads and rereads it often, some paragraphs she has memorised. Found in the Haslams’ library.

Born 9 December 2024, Ib is a Chartreux born of distinguished barncat pedigree. Set to mousing at a young age, his owners quickly discovered the cat to be blind. No matter, for Sophie loves him all the same. Ib is cobby, thick furred and coloured deep blue-grey, his eyes a light copper. He is intelligent, silent and solitary; and spends his days sleeping in hard-to-find places. But when night falls, he always returns to Sophie's bed.

"Sophie could see they were sisters—tall and wiry, sharp-featured, and long, smooth hair falling past their shoulders. But here the resemblance ended. Imogen had eyes tawny brown and flecked green, large and round and attentive; and hair of sunlight, brushed smooth and shiny. Charlotte had eyes narrowed and suspicious, coloured indigo blue; her hair thin, tangled, and darker than onyx. Imogen’s face had a softer fullness to her cheeks, and her skin had a healthy bronze to it; Charlotte seemed pasty pale, and her angles sharper and more defined. Imogen smiled as the pair advanced toward her; Charlotte’s expression remained expressionless and still." ==In Lightning

⟟ The Outer Hebrides
On the grassy salt flats of southern Harris, in the Outer Hebrides, Sophia Ciara Primrose Brown came to be. My mother gave birth to her third child and third daughter in the early hours of 5 January 2014, inside the crumbling rooms of a once-grand farmhouse, and decided I must be her last.

My parents became close confidants during their stay at Hogwarts, tied by a shared desire for knowledge. Since their departure from Hogwarts in 2008, they had become engrossed in a study to examine the possible connection between the North Pole and ancient forms of magic. Establishing themselves in the northern reaches of Scotland, they became so absorbed in this research it quickly became the centre of their lives, and every minute they spent studying, reading, and writing.

They unceremoniously married after their graduation, and had two daughters five and three years before me: Imogen Deirdre Eglantine Brown and Charlotte Saoirse Lavender Brown respectively. They loved us: fed, clothed, and bathed us—but they could not find interest in us. My sisters and I came to be a byproduct of their shared devotion and brilliance, and second to their study of such massive proportions, their magnum opus. I gurgled, slept, and cried as Imogen and Charlotte ran free across the chilly grounds of Harris, noses running and hair unbrushed.

In early 2017, my father died. So absorbed in his research, he ate so little and did not care for his health, and in the end, an unsuspecting flu ended him. He died in his sleep, quietly and peacefully. In truth, not he but my mother
=
suffered the most. Breandán’s death became hers. So distraught in her grief, it overtook her, and she became a numb shell of her old self. Her mother urged her to return to her childhood home, and she willingly did.

Thora had grown up someplace away from a small village called Mary Tavy in Dartmoor, in the country home of the Ulvestrom estate. Here, she returned to the care of her gentle mother Guiying, and gave to her father Harald the care of her three daughters. Unlike Guiying, Harald’s primary concern, as it always tended to be, was to protect his family from any criticism they might face from society. He did not want anyone to know of his daughter’s miserable state, and sought to safeguard this.

His solution was simple: each daughter should be given to a different family member. The family member was to be told minimal information, and instructed to remain tight-lipped about their existence. The first daughter, Imogen Deirdre Eglantine Brown, was sent to Thora’s paternal aunt Gerda in Edinburgh, Scotland. The second, Charlotte Saoirse Lavender Brown, was sent to Breandán’s father Fiachra in Trughanacmy, Ireland. The third, I, was sent to Thora’s paternal cousin Constance in Richmond, England.

Harald had four siblings. Gerald, the second son, had two daughters, Prudence and Constance. Connie Ulvestrom graciously accepted me after her elder sister’s refusal. She resided in North Yorkshire with her husband, the pure-blood wizard Bryn Haslam. I was sent to them at the age of three and a half.

== ⟟ The Forest of Bowland
Brynmor John Haslam and Constance Georgiana Haslam could not have made a more separate couple from my parents, despite the familial ties they shared.

Bryn, unlike my late Muggleborn father, came from the old Haslam wizarding family, though it was of little renown and even littler fame. They claimed matrilineal descent from a medieval Welsh king, Hywel Dda, and despite having resided in England for many years, held deep pride in their royal Welsh heritage. Bryn’s father had died shortly after Bryn reached the age of majority, and the present Haslam family consisted only of Bryn and his two younger twin brothers, Bedwyr Mark Haslam and Berwyn Paul Haslam. Both Bed and Ben considered their flamboyant, superficial elder brother unworthy to lead the family, and silently resented him for it.

Connie too had been graced with beautiful features, but, unlike my mother, had nothing in the way of intelligence. Growing up, her father had taken special care to mold his eldest, Prudence, into an intelligent and well-mannered child. Connie instead spent her days playing fairies and mermaids and colouring in pictures of hippogriffs, as Prudence spent hours in tutorials and in private conversation with her father. Bryn and Connie were the perfect pair, both uninterested in any serious pursuits, and instead dedicated to a life of parties, shopping, and mindless conversations over wine. Their marriage was happy.

They did not put too much thought into the responsibilities of a child before adopting me into their care, but then again they did not put too much thought into anything. Not that it mattered much—the Haslam account was impressively large, supported by large swaths of land in Yorkshire from which the family received handsome income—and my first years in Richmond I spent under the care of nannies and housemaids. To Bryn and Connie, I was a plaything, something entertaining and fun; but they never rocked me to sleep, fed me, or hushed by cries. I loved them deeply though, and they loved me too, and despite everything saw me as their trueborn child.

I grew. From the age of five I had a number of tutors come to teach me how to read, write, and do my numbers. From the age of seven I was allowed to accompany Bryn and Connie to the fabulous balls and soirees they both attended and hosted, and it is here I first came to terms with the magical society of which I was a part of. I was an unruly child, having no true parental influence in my life, but spoiled.

In 2022, I turned eight years old, and Bryn and Connie had their first child, a boy they named Llywelyn Lloyd (purely because they found that name entertaining, but they did base many major decisions upon this one characteristic). I knew I was not his true sister, though Bryn and Connie had never told me much about my birth family, largely because they were ignorant to such matters. Nonetheless, I cared for him as an older sister might care, and doted on him. I had forgotten most of my days in Scotland, and I saw myself as a Haslam.

But the birth of little Llyw harked bad comings. Later that year, a Gringotts representative arrived in Richmond to inform Bryn that he had drained the Haslam account, and that if he did not pay back the money owing (around 100,000 galleons) the bank would seize his property. The years of endless shopping and balls, of neglecting to work or take care of the Haslam estate, had finally caught up to him. His brothers, Bed and Ben, became furious at the news. They would spend hours at the house, yelling and shouting at Bryn, warning him not to sell any of the family lands, and telling him he must make up the debt with his own coin. But he had none.

Being unable to sell any property, Bryn instead sold many of his precious belongings he had collected over the years. Portraits, vintage brooms and Quidditch uniforms, his most beautiful gowns, the bones of a unicorn, carpets made by Afghan wizards—the list was endless. Miraculously, he paid off his debt. But he became a poor man, owning no money and no longer able to borrow.

My tutors vanished, and so did my guardian’s lavish guests, and their invitations to exclusive events of society. Bryn and Connie became miserable, devoid of purpose. I did not mind the change too much, being still young at the time. To escape the misery at home, I turned to the forests and moors outside, playing alone or finding some Muggle neighbours and joining their games. I came to love the feeling of earth between my toes, or branches scratching my skin, and the singing of birds early in the morning; and more did I quieten, as I found solitude to be my only peace.
