Sophie ended Marshal’s lesson flushed and happy, her pride in having learnt another spell almost tangible in the way her eyes glinted and her shoulders stood thrown back and firm. Yet still, the mental weariness of elongated concentration had tired her, the muscles in her arms ached from constant practice; and although the afternoon sun still shone through the duelling room, she sought only the soft covers of her bed.

The other students, a blurry, nameless crowd to Sophie’s inattentive mind, trickled quietly out of the classroom. Sophie busied herself putting her singular red sock back on her bare, and quickly going cold, foot. She had slipped her precious wand into the deep pockets of her robes, and had turned to make her way to the door, when a soft mop of dark hair moving out of the room caught her eyes.

The realisation came to her quickly. Leo! She had spotted him at the beginning of class, and his returned wave had made her smile, but Marshal had been a quick, efficient tutor, and there had been no time to talk further. Sophie had completely forgotten Leo’s presence. She felt thorny guilt deep in her stomach. Then too did she remember that old promise she had sworn to Leo so long ago, two months! Time had flown quickly, though she knew the excuse was a poor one. Her guilt became shame, and her resolution hardened.

Instinctively, Sophie reached again for the pockets of her robes, and felt around her wand, scraps of parchments, and loose gobstones to locate a handful of coins. Bingo. She made her way quickly out of the duelling room and into the corridors, and called out after the Ravenclaw’s retreating back.

Leo!” Sophie called, waving her hands about in a rather eccentric, and unneeded, manner. “Wait up a moment!

With the rather interesting lesson over and Leo now having one more spell in his arsenal, he was ready to head out and practice it some more on his own until he had it perfect. Something he had become more of since coming to Hogwarts was a perfectionist, the want and need to please his parents always in the back of his mind. Thus he was determined to do whatever was in his power to perfect every spell, complete every potion he learned perfectly, learn to fly controlled but fast. Basically, he wanted to be the best wizard he could possibly be to impress them and everyone.

As the others in the tutoring group began to leave, Leo slipped his sock back on after having used it for the lesson. He had a faint smile on his face as he thought about how their tutor had so suddenly pulled off his own sock and insisted the young first years do the same. It was certainly an effective way to get everyone’s attention and teach the lesson in a rather unique way. Once his sock and shoe was back on, Leo placed his wand into his back pants pocket before gathering the rest of his things and turned to head towards the door but was stopped by the sudden calling of his name.

Glancing back over his shoulder, Leo saw the girl he had met on the train ride, Sophie, calling out to him to stay back a moment. It was surprising honestly the two hadn’t met since that first day just over a month ago so Leo was more than happy to wait and see what she had to say. As he went back over to her, a small smile crept up onto Leo’s face as he greeted his old cabin mate. “It’s nice to see you again, Sophie. What did you need?” He asked and leaned against the table slightly. “I see you ended up in Slytherin, too bad you didn’t end up in Ravenclaw.” He noted as he saw the green color and the house crest on her robes. It was interesting to see that she ended up in one of the houses she was initially thinking of.

Sophie stepped quickly toward Leo as he stepped toward her, and met him in the middle of the corridor. She matched his smile, and felt ridiculously happy. It felt good to meet a familiar face in the otherwise crowded corridors of Hogwarts, always swimming with thousands of strange faces; and Leo’s appearance, his soft, dark hair, his pearl-pale skin, reminded her of the war memories she held from her journey on the Hogwarts Express to school.

Thank you,” she told him, as she dived her hand again deep into the contents of her pocket, reaching for the cold, smooth surface of the coins. Grabbing a handful, she pulled them out in a tight fist, and opened her fingers to reveal a dozen sickles and half as many knuts, as well as some loose strands of fluff and parchment feathers. She pulled out the debris, and then stretched out her hand to Leo. “For the sweets,” she told him, stretching her smile to a playful grin. “Remember? I told you I wouldn’t forget. Is this enough? I have some more sickles if you’d like.

Sophie had a handsome allowance of ten sickles a month during her time at Hogwarts, from her grandfather, and although the aim had been for her to save it for the future, she had already purchased from her fellow students a gobstones set and a fake permission slip for Hogsmeade, and hoped to have enough for a broom by the end of the year. Nonetheless, she found herself quite fortunate compared to some other students, and tended to always have some change on hand.

Yes, I’m a Slytherin,” she agreed. “I should have known I was too much of an idealist for Gryffindor. No surprises for you though. Ravenclaw, just as you thought.

She mirrored Leo as she leant against one of the immense stone walls of the corridor. “So, how did you find Marshal’s lesson? Interesting, right? Much quicker than my normal classes, I thought. Much stranger too.

Leo waited and watched as the girl dug into her pocket for something, pulling out some coins and holding them out for him to take. He had nearly forgotten about her promise to pay him back so he couldn’t help but chuckle softly as he took the coins from her. “That’s right! You’re welcome, it was no trouble honestly. And no, this is enough, don’t worry.” He said as he recalled their train ride together, sitting and talking and enjoying the sweet treats. “I’m surprised you remembered honestly, I definitely didn’t remember until you just mentioned it.”

Pocketing the coins, he looked back at the girl and smiled. He nodded as she spoke, from what he saw of her personality on the train he was curious how she ended up in Slytherin but there was no arguing with the sorting hat, it always knew best where to place you in the end. “Yeah, no surprises for me.” He let out a soft laugh, not really of disappointment but just contentment. He was satisfied with the hat’s decision after spending time in the common room with other Ravenclaws now although he hadn’t been too sure at first before they had arrived at school. “I quite like it though, I think it does suit me in the end. What about you? Do you like the Slytherin common room and your housemates?” He asked her, leaning back against the wall beside her. He was genuinely curious to hear how her first month had been going since they last saw each other before the sorting ceremony and so much had already happened since then.

As Sophie asked him what he thought of the lesson they had just finished he paused for a moment, staring off in the distance before turning back to her. “It was interesting for sure.” He agreed immediately and chuckled. “Definitely not our typical lessons we get in class. I quite enjoyed it though, it was a nice change from the usual lectures. Although I was not expecting to ever have to use my own sock to learn a spell.” He glanced down at his feet where his sock was now thankfully back on his foot where it belonged. As he continued looking down he spoke again, “How has classes been for you though? It has had some challenging moments personally for me but I’m trying to keep up with all the studying.” He said, slowly raising his head to look at the girl again.

I’m glad,” Sophie told Leo as he spoke of his satisfaction—and she meant it. She could only begin to imagine the pressure he must have felt, coming from a family of Ravenclaws. In that regard, she considered herself fortunate; her own family being so dissimilar to one another. In her immediate family alone, she could count two Ravenclaws, a Hufflepuff, and a Gryffindor; and in her adopted family, another Gryffindor and a Hufflepuff. The list only grew as the family tree branched outward.

Yes, I like Slytherin,” she then replied to his question, firmly, as if to assure him she spoke truly, and not just to reassure him. “My dormmates… on the outside, everyone is so different, but if you peel back a few layers, you can see how we’re all related, how we’re all Slytherins.

Sophie flushed slightly as she spoke, hearing the oddness of her own answer as the words left her mouth. She had never been a particularly careful speaker, but in front of Leo, a friend she held in high regard, her lack of poise suddenly felt glaring.

She paused, then continued carefully, weighing each syllable so as not to speak another thoughtless sound. “But sometimes it feels a little… strange. Every house has its rivalries, of course, but given Slytherin’s history, I often feel as if Slytherin is a house that stands apart from the others. It’s unnerving, almost like reading a scary story, but I’m the monster.

She had never voiced these thoughts before, and saying them aloud felt revealing, exposing. It wasn’t anyone’s fault; it was simply the weight of her knowledge of Slytherin’s past misendeavors. It felt good to finally speak her mind—yet frightening too. She was glad when Leo steered the conversation back toward classes.

Classes are alright,” she said with a grin, shrugging her shoulders, eager to lighten the mood. “To be honest, I’m not nearly the student I hoped I’d be; but that had always been a wishful hope of mine. I was looking forward to Transfiguration too, but it turns out I’m a bit of a dud at it. I’m a fan of Potions though. What about you? How are you finding Hogwarts?
