It was a rainy day in September, and the clock didn't strike thirteen when Maisie finished her morning classes, and, with her mind full of werewolves and pixies and tests and whatnot, she turned the corner and into the next corridor.
Paintings of notable witches and wizards lined the walls, some slept, some gossiped, and some just sat there, eyes hazy as they daydreamed.
This was her new school, Hogwarts, and yet, even with other Hufflepuffs, her other house friends and the craving and the will to suck every last bit of knowledge the school offered before she graduated, she still felt...empty. As if she was missing just one more thing. But what was it? She had countless sketches and paintings, and even though she did show them to others, they still couldn't quite understand the feelings the paintings expressed. She needed someone to talk art with her, someone who, like her, lived and breathed art.
The rain pitter pattered on the tall window panes, and turning yet another corner, and jumping on a staircase seconds before it moved away, she found herself in yet another corridor.
Holy Merlin, this place is a maze, she thought.
There was now a sea of hungry students, flowing towards the direction of the Great Hall. Just follow them.
Her mind, now jumping from one thread of the thought to the other, was in the middle of cursing her brother two years her senior, Michael, for not showing her the way like her mother told her to. But then, he was probably going to make fun of her to his friends all the time, sighing over having to look after his 'baby' sister, and having downright fun pranking her by leading her to the boys bathroom instead of the girls'.
Now rounding yet another corner towards the Great Hall, she had a split second view of a mass of dark hair before her world exploded into a shower of parchment and a throbbing pain in her head.

xxxSo much to do. Always so much to do. Lucille had thought Hogwarts would be a breeze, with plenty of time for walks around the Great Lake or catching up with people or making new friends. The reality was anything but. She found herself rushing from one class to another, then rushing to the Great Hall for food, then more classes, then studying in her dorm. Scarcely did Lucille have any time for herself.
She enjoyed being kept busy, but she did try to get everything done as soon as possible, eager to snatch a couple hours at night for herself. She figured her routine would be much better if astronomy didn't exist. Lucille found that she was always turned around in that class, and her eyes would keep drifting shut, preventing her from retaining any information.
And so, Lucille found herself heading towards her dorm to study when everyone else was heading to the Great Hall for lunch. Astronomy notes in hand, the girl kept her head down, pushing through the flow of students going in the opposite direction. Her eyes drifted between her notes and the floor, sidestepping and avoiding some crashes narrowly.
The crowd thinned, and Lucille relaxed, letting her focus return completely to the parchment in her hand. A poor decision, because the next thing she knew, she had turned a corner and collided into something blocking her path. Her papers flew, and Lucille stumbled backwards because of the impact. She stabilized herself using the wall as support, and finally looked up.
She hadn't collided into something, but someone. "I'm so sorry!" she gasped, stepping forward, her notes momentarily forgotten. "Are you alright?" She had crashed into a girl, another first year by the looks of it. Lucille felt terrible, but she recovered from the impact quickly. Years of riding horses will do that to you.
She tried to see if the girl had any major injuries. It didn't look like it, at first glance, and Lucille was relieved. She certainly wouldn't want to be the cause for someone's visit to the hospital wing.

"Holy Merlin, are you trying to kill me?" she spluttered, hand pressing her head where it hurt most, her ears were ringing and her vision was slightly blurry, looking down at the parchment and books, now strewn across the floor. Some students looked at the curiously, but Maisie made a flicking gesture to make them go away. Last thing she needed was for word to get into her brothers ears that she was disgracing herself.
Her vision had mostly cleared, and she took a good, long look at the girl. She had dark hair, dark eyes and tan skin, and she looked bewildered.
"I- I'm fine. Completely fine.. Uh, are you alright?" she stammered. She didn't want to scare the girl rather shorter than her. And really, having regained her vision a split second ago, and having the ringing stop, she was indeed alright. She bent down to scoop up some of the parchment and books.
There goes my DADA essay... she thought, looking down at the wrecked piece of parchment.
" Um-I'm Maisie by the way, Maisie Williams of Hufflepuff. And you are? The sea of students had now thinned into a mere trickle, as most of them dined in the Great Hall for lunch. Her stomach grumbled. And though she was reluctant to miss a meal, having only the contents of her meager breakfast, she was still curious about the girl, and that made her stay rooted to the spot. Something about her dark eyes and dark hair made Maisie feel a sense of... Déja Vu. As if she'd met the girl before, as if this moment has been planned, and had taken place before. She was intrigued by this girl. The collision might have been a nudge by the creator of the world himself, that this girl, standing in front of her, might be someone who would really get her feelings, and get the feelings of her drawings.
Or maybe I'm just stupid...

xxxLucille seemed to flinch at the girl's initial harsh words. They almost looked as if they'd hurt her by digging into her skin, but the forlorn expression on her face vanished when the other girl relaxed a little. The other girl, who introduced herself as Maisie, seemed alright, and certainly not as angry as Lucille initially thought, and she breathed a sigh of relief.
"I'm Lucille," she said, kneeling down on the ground to gather up her work and Maisie's, gathering her own work and handing Maisie the parchment that was hers. She kept her head down, scanning the papers, avoiding Maisie's eyes out of embarrassment. She let the silence stretch for as long as she could without feeling the need to speak. For Lucille, that meant only a few seconds.
She spoke softly after her short pause. "This is going to put me even more behind on astronomy than I already am. The content isn't too difficult, but my mind just has such trouble focusing at night. God, if only I could draw a few pictures of the planets and be done with it." Her voice was low, and she seemed to be talking to herself.
When she finally gathered the last of her work, she remained on the floor. She sat down more comfortably, moving to lean back against the wall, ignoring the questioning looks from the passing students. Finally, Lucille looked up to meet Maisie's eyes and offered a smile. "How have you been faring? I've been doing quite well; it's just astronomy and potions giving me some trouble." Her voice returned to its regular, cheerful cadence, despite her tired, sleepy expression. Lucille wasn't used to conversing in any way except bright and upbeat, so, no matter her mood, her energy always seemed to be limitless. There was a comforting look in her eyes now, and she was still careful not to be too loud, fearing Maisie might have a headache.

(415)The girl who introduced herself as Lucille, handed her the fallen parchment, as they both made haste to pick them up front the floor. She slid down the wall into a sitting position, so Maisie did the same. She was surprised when she said she was also troubled by the astronomy work, and she, too, had wanted to just draw a couple of planets and called it a day, but hadn't dared.
Maybe we have more in common than i thought. Maybe...
Astronomy needs a lot of time is all, but potions on the other hand...I think it's easy, really. It's sort of like baking. I used to do it before, with the house elves in my parents house, but as I got older I was able to make real potions in my parents back garden. I would nick my older brother's potions kit and make it myself with their textbooks. I can help you with potions, but astronomy...well, I need to find a potion strong enough to keep me awake. I think muggles have-what do you call it? Coffin? Ah, coffee. Though I've never tried it. She chuckled. And um..how's your head? Sorry I shouted at you just then, I tend to be loud when I'm surprised. Uh, you said you'd just want to draw some planets? Do you like drawing? She tried her best not to sound too hopeful. After all, meeting someone who has the same interests is hard.
I can show you some of my drawings some time if you like. I did some in charcoal, and it's pretty messy-it's of the moon I drew when I first arrived. For my younger sister. She's ten, and she wants to come so badly. Do you have siblings? Am I talking too much? I'm sorry if I am, I do tend to talk a lot. Quite a lot sometimes. Maybe it's nerves or something. Holy Merlin, I barely know you and here I am sitting by the wall talking to you like I've known you since I was three! Uh you want to go and have lunch? Or do you want to just...part ways? Or study together?"
She could hear the clinking of china against wood, die down, and guessed most people were finished with their meals.
"I don't really want to see my brothers. They're very mischievous, and they'll laugh at me dreadfully if they catch wind of me in a collision around the corner. It's the kind of thing they love."

xxxLucille smiled and rubbed her forehead when Maisie spoke. There was a little bit of pain, but it was subsiding quickly and, anyway, she hadn't been hurt too hard. She was surprised when Maisie sat down on the floor with her, but was glad to have a companion.
Maisie seemed eager to talk, and Lucille smiled, happy to let her speak as much as she wanted. Lucille liked to listen, so she quietly let Maisie say everything she wanted to all at once. As Maisie spoke, she looked down at her notes. They were quite visual, with little doodles serving as diagrams, but pretty informative. Even half asleep, the obsession with academic excellence meant Lucille didn't miss a word the professor said, just that she didn't process it well enough.
"That comparison isn't comforting. I've never really cooked," Lucille said, a bit embarrassed to admit it. She knew how messy and clumsy she was, and, whenever she set foot in the kitchen, a little voice in her head told her she'd get burned cooking or cut herself chopping vegetables and, to her dismay, she listened to it. "The precision involved is what I can't get right. I'm not terrible, but certainly not as good as I want to be. As for my head, I'm doing alright." With that final statement, her energy seemed to return to her, happy to not linger on her academic difficulties. "I like to draw, I have two siblings, and I don't mind you talking. It's nice to listen," she said, summarizing her response to everything Maisie had said, voice lilting with amusement. Of course, that wasn't all she had to say, and she continued quickly, almost rambling now.
"I'd love to see your drawings! I've tried charcoal before, and I really like it, but I tend to stick to regular graphite pencils. Although, now, I'm trying to draw with a quill more. It's a new experience, but it's easier to get a quill and ink here rather than pencils." That was something Lucille had learned very quickly, but she had been eager to get over the hindrance. And, besides, ink gave her drawings a graceful quality that pencils didn't. "I like to draw animals, like my cat or horses. Sometimes, I draw people, but I prefer sticking to the pets," she said, giggling. "We can move if you like, but I can't make up my mind what I want to do. I was going to study, but now I just want to sit here for a while and give myself a bit of a break. Besides, I expect you don't want to enter the hall with your head throbbing. The noise can't help your headache." Lucille wanted the girl to stay for a little while longer; she liked the companionship, and it gave her an excuse to stop running around for a while.
"Besides, you mentioned not wanting to see your brothers? My siblings and I have a bit of an age gap, so it's almost like they played a part in raising me. They've graduated already, but I expect if they were here with me, they'd rush to my aid and coddle me and maybe even take me to the hospital wing 'just in case'." She made air quotes at the last part, but the girl's tone made it clear that she was quite fond of her siblings. They could be overbearing sometimes, but she loved them, and they were quick to show that they loved her, too. "Now it's my turn to apologize for talking too much," she said with a little laugh.

(422)Maisie was glad the girl didn't think her too chatty. She smiled when she said how she was a mess in the kitchens. And Maisie was happy Lucille liked drawing.
"Charcoal is harder to work with than pencil, because it doesn't erase as well. So that's why mine are all messy. But starting with a pencil then using charcoal is a good solution. I don't really draw with a quill. Well, only in class..sometimes." She grinneds sheepishly. "Because it's easier than bringing pencils and things to class." Maisie did use a variety of tools mostly provided by her parents, but when she lived with her grandmother, the woman had taught her to use nature--such as flowers to make dyes. She preferred that, but now she wasn't in Wales, nor her home, she had to resort to using pencils and charcoal. Or quills.
I'd better give quills another try. She thought. It would be nice to have a change.
"I like drawing still life or just the scenery. I do draw living things, but with drawing still life, you can just give them the emotions you want. As for real living things, you could only go with their emotions. And one would never really know how another person feels. Scenery takes the emotions you give."
My head is fine now, thanks. Maisie wasn't too used to people asking how she felt other than small talk, so she was rather touched. "We can sit for a while if you want. Anyway, I don't think my brothers are eating, they said something about wanting to set up a pank in one of the classrooms. They like pranks. My eldest brother, Martin graduated last year. I have five siblings, I'm the fourth child, but the first daughter, so I did get coddled around a bit when I was younger becausey parents always wanted daughters. But now they'd just tell me to toughen up. Even though I guess they'd still care for me. Martin always had my back though. My other two brothers...well... they'd just have a good laugh. My sisters are too young, and they can't worry about me as much. Still, you're lucky your siblings love you so much." Maisie heard the fondness in Lucille's voice when she talked about her siblings, and while she also loved her siblings, their age gap was too small, and they were all too young to appreciate each other as much.
"I don't think you're talking too much." she laughed. "Maybe we have more in common than we thought."

xxxWhen Maisie talked about her perspective on drawing still-life, Lucille's brows furrowed a little. She had never heard someone have that take on the situation, but it made perfect sense somehow. "You know, I never thought about it that way. That's a very interesting perspective." Her voice seemed almost lost, as if she was still trying to picture what Maisie meant. "I'd love to see your art," she said, forgetting that she'd already said it.
Lucille was intrigued when Maisie talked about her family. Her own family, she hardly knew anything about. At least, the wizard side, which would be her mother's. Her father's extensive Muggle family was a different story, what with them visiting his homeland every year. But the Rosenhart children always felt a little out of place among their many Muggle cousins; of course, they couldn't be open or talk to them freely about their lives. Couple that with the fact that they only met in the summer, and a close bond was never fostered.
"I know absolutely nothing about what my parents were hoping for when they decided to have children. The family's pretty hush hush about life before we were born, so we've never really asked questions about what they were expecting when they got married, and they've never offered to share it. But, I suppose I do understand what you mean by being coddled. I'm the youngest, so everyone tends to treat me like a 5 year old, no matter what." A hint of annoyance showed at the girl's voice. Of course, Lucille knew she wasn't old enough for a lot of the conversations her siblings and parents might have, but she still felt that they treated her far too much like a child.
"Then again, it comes with its privileges," she said with a little shrug, although her voice was bright and bubbly. "I found a stray cat earlier in the year, and I just had to do a little bit of begging and they let me keep it!" Her excitement showed in her voice, and she left out the part where her parents often let her brother, Ollie, keep strays, and that Ollie was the one who'd found the stray in the first place. It didn't really matter, because the cat was hers.
Lucille was getting ready to launch into a lengthy description of her cat, complete with everything she loved about her, but she tried to gauge Maisie's reaction first. Back home, Lucille's life had revolved around the animals on the property and, here at Hogwarts, it revolved around the one in her dormitory.

Maisie was surprised Lucille never thought about drawings in that perspective, but she didn't say anything, just smiled.Mentions: @ Lucille Rosenhart
Being born into a pure blood family, and throughout her years, she hardly did any communications with muggles, she found it hard to relate to Lucille's family life. How would life be like if part of your family are muggles? And how awful it would be, if one could not use magic and wands.
She had always been intrigued by muggles-how do they function without magic? She made a mental note to ask Lucille some other time.
She wasn't surprised Lucille had a cat, after all, at least a billion people owned a cat, and the percentage would be higher in any given wizarding community.
Maisie's brother had an owl for Hogwarts, Matthew an owl, Michael a cat. And Maisie had found a cat in Russia a year back; and she decided to keep it. However, due to some minor inconvenience, her cat won't be coming for a while. aka hasn't been validated
"Really?! That's so cool! What's the name? I love cats, and I'd love to see yours! Whats the cat like? Cats are just so wonderful creatures. When I was in Wales, my grandmother had four cats and three dogs and a canary and it was so chaotic everyday; at home there are bunnies and strays of all kinds running around in the gardens and things."
Maisie loved animals, and definitely not in the heartless way that her brother treated them for Potions OWLs.
"What other animals do you like?" Maisie had grown up near animals, even catching fish when living with her grandmother, however, she knew not everyone lived near the seaside, and not everyone had many animals to interact with. Her brothers call her mad for making nests for the bunnies at home. But, it seemed like Lucille knew a lot about animals.
Maybe as much as me. She thought.
It was interesting, how much the two had in common.

Lucille's eyes seemed to brighten as Maisie spoke of animals. It seemed her life had been just as much of a zoo as Lucille's had been. Back home, Lucille spent as much time as she could with the animals, and it seemed Maisie did, too.
"Oh, that sounds exciting! I can relate to that. We live on a bit of an estate in the countryside, so we've got your standard dogs, cats, horses. Then you have the ducks and all running around. And when I'd go out riding, I always came across different creatures. It's certainly an entertaining existence; things never really do calm down, do they?"
At the fond memory of home, Lucille's voice had taken on a longing tone. It seemed she wasn't in the castle anymore; but instead, back home, envisioning all she spoke about. "You know, I love Daisy May, but cats aren't my favorite animal, curiously." She seemed to break out of her reverie, her eyes meeting Maisie's once more. "It's horses. I have a mare back home. Lightning. I love her very much, but Daisy May can help with keeping the longing away. She's my cat. She's sweet and loving, but God, she can be demanding." Lucille laughed a little, adding the context hastily, realizing she had simply dropped the name without explaining who it was, and simultaneously answering the question Maisie had asked. "Did you attend summer camp this year? I adored getting to see the winged horses. It felt like my heart would fly with them. I'm hoping I can study magizoology later on. What would you like to do?" Her flow of words finally seeming to end, Lucille tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear and looked at Maisie eagerly, the girl capturing her full attention, the notes in her hands and the studying she had to do forgotten.
Lucille loved listening to people, and she got the feeling that Maisie had an entertaining life to share stories about. It certainly seemed that way, from the way she spoke.
