Dragon to Claw - Part 1
Makaio had finished yet another class. This time he was teaching reparifarge. It was toward the end of the year and the class had made great strides in their application of the spell. It seemed to be one that, despite its myriad of uses, was under utilized by the teachers through the year and was the least practiced by the students. Some could do it perfectly, while others struggled with half transfigurations. They were warned apparently not to try to fix their own mistakes, which the new Transfiguration Professor seemed to find strange. How were they supposed to practice one a snail, for instance, if they couldn’t undo their mistakes!? Were they supposed to have an unlimited supply of snails? And what of those poorly transfigured snails? Makaio couldn’t bear to think about those tortured souls, left to be half ceramic for the rest of their lives on some students dorm room floor.
Makaio was putting away some papers and teaching aids, in this class he used some more advanced transfiguration techniques to demonstrate that this first year spell could undo even complicated spells even if they didn’t know the point of origin. It was the one spell in transfiguration that was just wave the wand and say the thing. And exceedingly useful utility that can be used to help practicing students but why they were told never to attempt to untransfigure things themselves was beyond the new professor.
“Alright class! Remember to keep practicing!” He called after them as the first year students filed out of class. There were always some stragglers, normally they were crying in a corner because somehow this subject was the most difficult thing they ever learned in their life. “Reparifarge!” Makaio said pointing to the pair of white slippers he had demonstrated in that class as an example. They became two very cute fluffy white bunnies. He looked over and saw there was only one student this time seeming to wait for him. “Mr. Dragonclaw. How may I help you?"

Damien Dragonclaw was sitting in the transfiguration classroom listening to professor Kāne teach as he wrote down notes and watch him demonstrate the spell reparifarge which Damien sorta understood. He had to admit he didn’t really like transfiguration class and it wasn’t like he hated it or anything he just didn’t really care for it or more so fully didn’t understand it as it wasn’t one of his favorite classes like Astronomy and History of Magic was but he didn’t try to understand it but for him it just wasn’t like clicking at all. As he continued to watch the demonstration and jotted down more notes he started to examine what all he had written, as he looked at it and read over it he realized it didn’t help him feel any better about this class than he already felt maybe that was just due to the fact he thought it was a boring class which he ultimately felt bae for thinking. I don’t understand why I can’t fully focus in this class it just dosent make sense at all.He thought to himself as he tried to pin point the reason for why this class just wasn’t challenging or exciting him. He couldn’t figure out a reason why and just decided he would stay after class and ask the professor for advice. Once porfessor kāne finished teaching Damien began to pack his stuff up before standing and deciding he’d wait by the door for everyone to leave before talking to the professor. Once everyone left and he heard the professor address him and ask him what he could do for him, he got up and walked towards him. “i um…i was listening to your lesson and demonstrate and even wrote notes but um…it failed to capture my attention and it’s noting to do with you or the lesson i think transfiguration in general just fails to capture my attention which helps me understand it better..so i was wondering if you had any advice on what I could do ?”He asked as he felt sorts of embarrassed to ask this but knew he had too. |

Dragon to Claw - Part 1
Makaio spent much of his lesson taking note of who did and didn’t pick up what he was laying down. Young Damien Dragonclaw was one of the ones he recognized weekly as someone who just didn’t seem to get it. There was no proof that he was a slacker, quite to the contrary, he seemed to take copious amount of notes that never seemed to save him. All that effort for little gain. In this specific lesson, the easiest spell for first years, he seemed particularly miserable. Maybe he just didn’t get the attention he needed from previous staff. Well, Makaio would be sure to fix that!
When Damien came over he seemed almost bashful as if he really didn’t actually want attention. Thinking it best to appear nonchalant, the Transfiguration professor continued to tidy his desk. The Ravenclaw, yes Ravenclaw, student was predictably having issues with the subject. He still couldn’t quite piece together why everyone thought his subject sucked. He was only here for like three days and already it was apparent a lot of work needed to be done.
Damien finished his plea for help and Makaio stopped what he was doing and thought for a moment looking at the tidy stacks in front of him. “Well, I think what makes Transfiguration so difficult is…” he started, trying to find the words. In the end none came to him so he tried his best, “casting the magic requires the most amount of imagination. The lessons are tough, I understand, but it’s so that we can better fine tune exactly what we are picturing.”
Taking a blank piece of paper, a quill, and a bottle of ink, he handed the student the supplies. “Do you like to draw? Draw for me a picture of a teacup.” It didn’t really matter how well this kid could draw or if he liked to at all, but the best way he found to help people was to redirect their focus to something they can do, even if they can’t do it well.

Damien just stayed quiet as he didn’t Exactly know what the professor would say, he just didn’t understand transfiguration at all and he didn’t know why as he had an imagination a very good one at that he just couldn’t figure out this class. He was still confused as there was never a subject he didn’t understand so to say that this messed with him was a understatement, it felt like for once in his life he had no idea on what could be done to fix it. Damien was shocked to say the least when he heard the professor tell him to use his imagination and draw a teacup. That was Something Damien could do as he was a great drawer, he slowly pulled out his sketch book out of his bag and starts to slowly sketch a teacup. Every detail and stroke of his pencil was precisely the right movement to animate the teacup and bring it to life. He finally finished the sketch before turning the book around and showing the professor. “How is this professor Kāne ?” He asked him as he hopped the teacup drawing was good. |

Makaio watched as Damien, though shocked, took the quill and parchment from him. He was expecting, as with most of the people who struggle with transfiguration, that the student would also struggle in the arts. However, this Ravenclaw, much to his surprise, proved him wrong. He got straight to work as if an expert artist already. The teacup that he produced was not only detailed but very accurate. “Well, it looks like your imagination is in tact, Mr. Dragonclaw,” Makaio said, clearly impressed with his student.
Taking the parchment from Damien, he placed it on the blackboard. “Now,” he said, straightening it out so that it laid flat and turning to face the student. “Transfiguration is as simple as imagining drawing something turning into something else. While the science of it can be hard to grasp, the only reason for the science-y bits is to fine tune the imagination.”
Placing a snail on his desk, Makaio gestured to it with his hand. “Now. You should already know the incantation for turning a snail into a teapot. You clearly know your way around a tea set. This time, I want you to take a moment to picture how you might draw a snail as a teapot and then cast the spell. The quicker your imagination, the quicker the casting. However, for now let’s take it nice and slow.”

Damien smiled brightly at the professor as hearing that he certainly had a good imagination and that he seemed to be impressed with his drawings excited Damien a lot as he felt getting a compliment from one of his professors was one of the higher honor he had every gotten so far. He listened to professor Kāne speak on how transfiguration was just like drawing or sketching a picture and turning it into something else. Damien had to admit that using that terminology made him be able to understand it so much better than he did before but he was still confused about it. He sighed taking a slow deep breath before trying to make sure his mind was grasping what professor Kāne was saying. Damien watched as he placed the snail on the desk this made sense as earlier in the year they had learned how to turn a snail into a teapot and that when his eyes lit up as now it made sense why he was drawing a teapot. He held his wand in his hand before taking a deep breath before using his imagination waving his wand three time and saying the incantation. Once he opened his eyes he thought he would see a teapot on the table as he thought he was using his imagination pretty well but as he looked he slowly frowned as it didn’t work at all. |

Damien looked like he got it, in fact, Makaio felt the energy radiating off the student. “Easy, Mr. Dragonclaw. Remember, nice and slow,” Makaio reminded again as the Ravenclaw drew his wand. However, that spark of excitement would not be sated easily. The Transfiguration professor could anticipate exactly what would happen. He would not interrupt the actual casting though.
When Damien opened his eyes, Makaio held back a sigh, it was all he could do to keep from running a hand across his face. So close but not close enough. It was the obvious outcome with how eager it seemed Damien was to implement the lesson without out slowly considering it. “For one, let’s not close our eyes yes? Can you imagine closing your eyes in a Quidditch match? Don’t take your eyes off the quaffle, don’t take your eyes off the snail.”
Makaio tapped the shell of the snail, causing it to withdraw into it’s shell. “Now, let’s try this again. Keep your eyes open and instead of just picturing it in your mind, see it happen. You have the imagination, but let’s use it in the right ways. Visualize what you are picturing. I want you to will this snail into a teapot the next time you cast.”

Damien let out a frustrated sigh as noting happened after he opened his eyes, he suddenly heard Professor Kāne mention how next time he shouldn’t close his eyes. Heat quickly rose to his face at the mention of that as he felt quite embarrassed. He knew you shouldn’t close your eyes when doing a spell but in order for him to imagine something he usually has to close his eyes and think pretty hard to get a good image in his mind. So he took the professors advice keeping his eyes on the snail as he sighed and held his wand out again waiting to hear further instructions from the professor. He took note of how Professor Kāne wanted him to visualize the snail in his mind and will it into a teapot. He took a deep breath as he he kept his eyes open as he tried to focus his mind softly as he chanted the words into his mind. You can do this Damien it’s simple a snail into a teapot. He got himself prepared before doing the wand Motion as he chanted the spell for Turning the snail into a teapot. As he looked at the snail it started to slowly change and at first he thought it was turning into a teapot but then he gasped as what happened next made him even more worried. The snail didn’t turn into a teapot but instead turned into a teapot shaped snail. “I-…I didn’t mean to do that!” He cried out as he looked absolutely mortified at the fact of what he did to the poor little snail, he slowly turned to look at Professor Kāne. “Y-you can fix it right!” |

Makaio waited patiently. Perhaps there were some professor’s that would lose their patience with a student who continued to botch instructions. There was nothing that he enjoyed more about teaching than to helping students cast magic. He wasn’t much for grading, heck he gave more than a few stellar grades randomly just so he would finish the work that much quicker (or if he was in a grumpy mood gave more bad grades without looking at the work). He didn’t really care for lectures, finding himself boring and always frustrated with the lack of student interaction. However, helping students actually do magic, Makaio had all the patience in the world.
So when Damien failed to cast the spell for the third time, he just smiled softly. Well, at least this time he was making progress! “Mr. Dragonclaw, that is certainly a very imaginative teapot! At least one can serve tea in it!” He congratulated him, clasping him on the shoulders. “It isn’t quite what is expected in class, true. But magic is at the whim of our imaginations not the other way around. Watch.”
Makaio drew his wand and cast the same spell at a different snail. It whirled around and with a pop, became a teapot in the shape of a mongoose, with the head as the spout and the tail as the handle. “See,” Makaio said simply, tapping his wand against the pot with tink tink tink. “I would not assume you failed to do something just because it looks different than the rest. However, if it wasn’t what you were intending, the only thing to do is to practice.”
The transfiguration professor raised an eyebrow as the student asked for his help. “I believe you know the spell. Why don’t you try to change this creature back?”

Damien’s worried and panic suddenly stopped in a instant as he realized that Professor Kāne had just said his teapot was very imaginative as it still could serve its purpose of serving tea. That’s what shocked Damien the most as it just didn’t make any sense to him, shouldn’t he be telling him it’s okay that he’ll get it next time I mean he failed to turn the snail into a teapot sure the snail is now in the shape of a teapot but that dosent meant he did the assignment right it just didn’t add up for him at all. He slowly turned to look at Professor Kāne as he blinked slowly before tilting his head to the side. “But Professor! I didn’t do what you asked I just turned the snail into a shape of a teapot ?” He softly asked as this wasn’t making any more sense to him it was like he had lost all grips on reality or even on where he was at for the moment. Once he calmed down he looked back at the professor to figure out what exactly he meant. He stopped in the midst of opening bus mouth as he listened to what his professor was saying. His eyes widen as he finally was understanding what his professor was saying, it didn’t matter that he made the snail into the shape of a teapot as he still manages to change it after all and if he wanted to do better then he just would need to pratice is all. He slowly took out his wand holding it toward the snail before moving his arms and shouting Reparifarge as the snail slowly turns back into its normal form. “I think I finally get it Professor Kāne!” |
