Oh, my, love is a lie, it's what my friends say to get me by...

The clock could not possibly tick any slower. Had someone secretly used a Time-Turner to extend the hours, or maybe cast some kind of new spell to make the sands of the hourglass float lazily down instead of plummeting at gravity's speed? Aly was half-convinced that must be true, or something of that sort, because this was the slowest an evening had ever passed.
It was her first night in France, and after a long day of tea parties and letter-writing and unpacking in her cabin for the week, one would have thought that the sixth-year Ravenclaw might be nothing short of pooped. Instead, she was more energised than if she had downed six consecutive Vitamix Potions and chased them with an Invigoration Draught. Every two seconds, it seemed, she flitted from whatever activity she had taken up to busy herself for the few hours until her planned meet - organising the veritable wardrobe she'd brought along with her across the channel, reading through the same annotated copy of Quidditch Through the Ages she'd perused a thousand times, fixing her makeup with her makeup counter's worth of the Hardanger's cosmetics line, scanning her recently-purchased recipe book Bewitched Baking for ideas for her next Headliner article, braiding her hair seventeen different ways, munching on the croquembouche tower she'd managed to smuggle from the dining room's grandiose feast of a supper, playing a Wizard's Chess match against herself, letting her pocket Snitch around and clambering up on beds to try to leap off and catch it, and trying to ignore the fact that the creepy bear from her dormitory had somehow found its way into her luggage, just to name a few. She also kept checking, between each whirlwind activity, outside the door of their cabin to see if her letter had been dropped off yet, to no avail. And yet, when she had done all of this, she looked at the clock on the wall to find that only twenty minutes had passed since she had gotten back to the cabin.
Aly groaned, shuffling back to the couch near the fireplace, as that was the only way she could walk in her pink pygmy-puff-pouf slippers. (She sure had packed a lot of pink, practically everything of rosy hue in her trunk at Hogwarts having been thrown into her trunk for here.) Keeping her back straight as a rod, she allowed herself to tip fully over and face-plant onto the warm, soft cushions, where the wind was promptly knocked out of her; she wheezed for a moment before settling into the comfortable toastiness of the sofa. Maybe, if she just took a short nap... she'd wake up with just enough time... to go and... zzz.
She bolted upright at the sound of pounding footsteps approaching the door to the cabin, which led directly into the living room and thus which she was quite near. A panicked glance out the large clear window nearby showed darkness in the magical "outdoor" forest, moonlight filtering down as easily as the pitter-patter of enchanted rain, and for a moment she thought she had overslept her most important appointment; however, this was easily resolved by a check of the clock, which only read that there were just a few minutes to nine. Still an hour at least to go, then, but her snooze had managed to whittle away a decent chunk of the time she had to waste.
Her racing heart fluttering in its futile attempt to calm down, Aly leaned in a sitting position against the back of the couch with her legs still stretched out along its body. It was only then that she noticed she had company: Marcus. No, Ravenclaw's half-feared, half-respected Head of House was not perched at the foot of her makeshift bed, but rather, it was Haven's scraggy little pygmy puff, who had taken a perch upon the arm of the couch and appeared to be closely examining the lone slipper that had managed to stay on Aly's foot throughout her nap (with the other having fallen to the floor).
Aly snatched her foot back, slipper included, and dove for the one on the floor before the sentient cotton-ball could get to it. "I swear, it's no one you know," she insisted to Marcus, perhaps more defensively than necessary.
This was the situation to which the door would open.

Haven twirled around as she made her way back to the cabin, absolutely giddy, her stomach filled with butterflies and her heart pounding like it was going to take flight. Her head was full of silly little thoughts, imagining her and the perfect duck boy, feeding the ducks or talking for hours. Maybe it was silly, and a bit premature, and a tad delusional, but she was imagining their future, dancing together at a Hogwarts ball or baking cupcakes on a sunny afternoon, and of course feeding the ducks.
As she neared the cabin, she couldn't help but increase the speed of her steps, excitement radiating out her feet. She had to tell someone about her encounter. Oh, she hoped Aly would be there, she wanted to tell her friend absolutely everything!
Right before she reached the door, a piece of paper caught her eye, Aly's name written in a deep mahogany ink. She scooped it up for her friend, hoping it was a sign that she was in the cabin.
"Aly!" she exclaimed as soon as she saw her friend on the couch. "Aly Aly Aly! And Marcus!" Upon seeing her furry little pal, she rushed over to the couch, sitting by Aly's feet and setting the letter down, forgotten about as she scratched behind the pygmy puff's ears and started blabbing to her friend.
"You're never going to believe what happened!" she leaned her head back dramatically with a sigh. "Oh my gosh, Aly, I just had the most amazing night. I was out on the grounds, by the fountains, and I was working on my crochet, even though it wasn't going very well, which is okay, because I'm still learning, but I was- OW! Marcus, don't bite my fingers! But I saw this boy, and oh, Aly, I don't think I've ever met someone so kind and so handsome and he had the most beautiful eyes."
She stared at the ceiling, just thinking back on his brilliant blue eyes. Her heart pounded, she felt breathless.
"Do you think I'm in love?"

For a scraggly little pygmy puff, Marcus looked quite disgruntled at Aly's insistence that her slippers had not been made of his friends. Still, it was hard to stay that way for long because the door burst open, revealing none other than Marcus's owner, Haven - one of Aly's cabinmates and close friends, an absolute ray of sweetness and sunshine to all who knew her. In true Haven fashion, her outfit today was nothing short of youthful charm embodied, with various birds representing her hat, socks, and bag and bright colours on both her shoes and the remainder of her outfit. Sometimes it was more than obvious that the Irish girl was a half-blood and had grown up in a distinctly Muggle manner; the fashions she wore would never have been caught dead on a dustier, older, more pureblooded person... like Aly's own mother, Hesper. Still, it was exactly that adolescent joy and vitality that had attracted Aly to Haven in the first place, and what made the two girls such great friends. Nothing was ever truly terrible if Haven was round.
The Hufflepuff's gaze landed directly on the Ravenclaw and, chirping her name, Haven rushed over to plop on the couch beside Aly and relieve her of her troublesome malcontent of a pet. Though Haven held a letter in her hand and discarded it in her lap next to Marcus, Aly assumed it was addressed to the Hufflepuff or was something Haven had written herself, and thus did not immediately give it a second thought, instead focusing on her friend's merry babble about her "most amazing night". It truly sounded like Haven had felt something special - something about which the two girls had never really talked, seeing as neither of them had had anything particularly romantic in their lives as of late, and Aly was glad to see her mate so happy. If anyone deserved pure, unconditional love, it was Haven - well, not to get ahead of herself, but a crush certainly could help pave the way.
"So - wait, slow down. You met a boy out by the fountains? One you didn't know before?" Of course, at a place like Beauxbatons, with all the international students here for a visit, it wasn't as uncommon to come across a stranger as it was at Hogwarts where everyone in the year had had courses together for ages - but Aly had found a fair amount of the students from other schools to be standoffish or hard to converse with simply due to the language difference, though of course the same could not be said for all of them. Manu was in their tent, for instance, and they got along right well. "Well, mate, you can't just say kind and handsome and leave it at that! Details, please. What's he look like? Is he tall? I assume from another school, right, so which one?" She reached out and grasped Haven's shoulder, buying into the dramatic lovestruck mood with an equally goofy groan: "I'm positively dying over here from lack of detail! You must tell me more if you're truly as in love as you claim." Was Aly, a romantic herself, going to be the downer who told Haven that she couldn't possibly be in love if she'd only ever met the bloke once? Absolutely not. Never on your life.

"I don't think I can slow down, my heart is beating so fast," she said, picking Marcus up and snuggling him close, though he squeaked and tried to get away from her. Despite his protests, Haven kept him close for another moment, picking a piece of paper out of the fluff by his mouth before returning him to his spot.
"No, no, I've never met him before! Don't think I've even seen him, well of course I probably haven't, I would think I would have remembered, especially because he was so cute and oh!! It was so wonderful," Haven squealed, kicking her feet in the air. "I was outside, trying to crochet, and it wasn't going very well because I'm not very good yet, but it got cold and I put my hat on and he went and he COMPLIMENTED it and he was feeding the ducks, and he offered me some of the bread he had so I could feed the ducks too..." she trailed off with a wistful sigh, unable to stop the smile that took up her whole face.
When Aly asked for details, Haven squealed a little and turned onto her stomach so she could see her friend better as she blabbed on and on. "He's the most kindest and handsomest, and he has these beautiful golden curls, and the most lovely blue eyes, I could just stare into them all day. He's tall, too, really tall, made me feel short, like you!" Haven had been one of the taller ones of her peers, having hit her growth spurt before many of the boys, and they were just starting to catch up. But the boy she met was tall, just like a storybook knight in shining armor. "He's from Ilvermorny, and he's a seventh year, and he's just so cool, too, and we had such a good conversation, and we fed the ducks, and it was so good. It was so so so good. We had such a wonderful time, and the fountain, and the DUCKS-" Haven went on for what could have been forever, talking about every little detail that anyone else would have found meaningless, but to Haven, meant the world. The girl that usually had her head in the clouds was now recalling every detail- she was more observant than she let on.
She had been blabbing on for quite some time, absentmindedly petting Marcus when her hand brushed against some parchment.
"Oh! I almost forgot! There was a letter for you outside the cabin!" Haven sat up, looking in the cushions of the couch for the parchment with the tell-tale mahogany ink. Her heart dropped a little when she saw the paper sticking out of Marcus' mouth.
"Marcus! Noooo!" she scolded him, wrangling the letter out of his jaws. "I'm so sorry, he doesn't normally do this... I hope it wasn't anything important?" She had grabbed the pygmy puff at this point, trying to open his mouth and wrestle words out of his teeth.

Surprising absolutely no one, Haven was "unable" to slow down. This wasn't at all different than normal, and usually Aly would have been more than happy to go along at her Hufflepuff friend's breakneck pace, but today she had her own heart pitter-pattering in her chest. Trying to balance her friend's excitement with her own was not for the faint of mind.
Haven blabbered on about the asked-for details, and Aly slowly pieced together a mental photograph of the heart-stealing Ilvermorny boy her mate had clearly already fallen head over heels for: tall and blonde and curly-haired, with eyes like the sky. Certainly not someone Aly had ever met, but he sounded perfect for Haven, who shone like the sun in equal part. Aly had always preferred, perhaps, someone a bit darker and more mysterious - not like this duck-obsessed American - but a sunshine child would essentially be Haven's soulmate, the Ravenclaw was quite sure. At least, it seemed to be so based on the excited glow coming from Haven's eyes, the high-pitched tone in her chatter. When Haven finally skidded to a stop, Aly gave her an excited, somewhat wry smile. "He sounds perfect, Hay. I'm so excited for you - but I'm really not that short." She stuck her tongue out at her, a perfect silly ending.
A gasp from Haven made Aly quirk an eyebrow - had her strawberry blonde friend remembered something else about this happy stranger? - but it wasn't about the Ilvermorny boy at all. The Hufflepuff said something about a letter, and Aly shot straight up from her leaning against the couch fluff to a sitting position, her heart beginning to beat a speed twice as fast. "A letter? Oh, yes! I've been expecting-" but then her eyes dropped to Marcus at the same time as Haven's, and her enthusiastic speech trailed off into somewhere between a shocked choke and a strangled groan- "...please tell me that isn't the letter."
Unfortunately, it seemed to be. Aly joined Haven in picking pieces of parchment out of the fluff around the Pygmy Puff's mouth, scolding him and lamenting the loss equally. Luckily, there were still some parts that seemed undamaged, and the two girls arranged the remaining scraps on the coffee table in front of them, trying to piece together words and sentences. All together, they managed to reassemble the following snippets and fragments, which were not necessarily clear nor entire sentences:looking forward to finding out morea sixth year at Tenūsa, I enjoy potions, poetryI have five siblings, three oflove to meet you at the fountain tonight, Ithis evening. I hope you will grace me with yourtruly looking forward to meetingAly was nothing short of elated by the time they had managed to piece these together, even though no amount of Reparos could fix what had been chewed up and digested by the bedraggled purple blob of fur and parchment. Her grin grew wider and wider as they managed to fix small phrases, and eventually she turned to Haven, her emerald eyes all sparkles and aglow. "My original letter asked him to meet me at the fountain in that maze thing tonight. After curfew - and if I'm reading that clock correctly, curfew's in about five minutes," she pointed out, gesturing to the aforementioned clock on the wall. "He's a sixth year, and he said he'd love to meet me there. Look, he even wrote 'yours'! Ah, thank you, Haven!" The Ravenclaw threw herself into her friend's arms, giving her the tightest ever squeeze before gathering up the parchment scraps they'd managed to fix and dashing off to get ready as quickly as she possibly could.Yours,
Kavi Kattimani
After all, she had a date to keep. He'd confirmed. No way he wouldn't show. Right???
