"Oh. Sorry to hear that," Jack said, offering his condolences. "But uh...hey, at least if you lost them really young, you don't remember them much, right? Easier to get over it if you didn't really know them." He frowned, noticing her shaking. "Something the matter...? You cold?"

He rolled his eyes at the proclamation that she cared. "Why? You have absolutely no reason to care about me. We're virtually strangers; acquaintances at best. If you're shaking, obviously you should focus on taking care of yourself first before you start doing thigs as frivolous as asking virtual strangers what they like."

Jack raised a brow as she slowly continued speaking. The girl seemed to have trouble getting proper words out. Was she scared? Of what? Maybe she just had a speech impediment or something. Still, he tried to make as much sense of her words as he could. "Heh, I'm... 'probably' a nice person? That's why you think you care?" Puzzled, he held his palms up in bewilderment. "So let me get this straight. You think I'm a nice person who people don't like? Does that make sense to you? Because I don't think I'm really understanding what you're trying to say."

Upon hearing that she hadn't been to the hospital wing yet, the redhead turned to her in shock and disbelief. "Well, then go to the hospital wing, crazy! Why did you decide to sneak into the library wing instead if you can't sleep? At least if you get caught out of bed on your way to the hospital wing, you'd have an excuse!"

Pushing himself to his feet, he grunted and put the book back where he'd found it. "Do you know where it is?" Luckily, he himself had been mapping out the castle mentally since they had been shown around by the prefects, especially the nurse's office since he spent so much time at the one in his last school. So if Alex didn't know the way, at least he could direct her. Not out of the kindness of his heart, no - as he liked to remind himself constantly he only did things for his own interests. And this particular interest was in getting her out of his hair. If he happened to help her in the process, well then, so be it. Besides, they were more likely to get caught with the two of them sitting and talking there.

The girl's gasps started to alarm Jack. Maybe directions weren't the biggset issue. "Um...dude, you need to take it easy. Do you want me to call someone?" He watched her pull a necklace pendant from her shirt - an owl. Was that some magical talisman or something? Would it help her?

Her next question to him caused him to frown, though. "What do you mean I don't know anything about the wizarding world? That's rude. What do you know that I don't?" He didn't think he had said anything to indicate as much. "Besides, no matter if you were born a pureblood or wizard-born or whatever, I'm a first year - like I already told you twice. Naturally, I'm not going to know things." Cocking his head at her, he asked somewhat resentfully, "How do you know stuff about what is and isn't restricted to fourth and third years? Are you a third year?"

Her ragged breathing reminded him this was no time to argue. Sighing, he said, "Nevermind. We have to deal with your breathing, first. Do you want to go to the hospital wing, or should I go find someone and bring them here?"

"NO I...I don't want to get anyone... or go to the hospital wing. This is probably the best...Best place for me to be...Also n...no I'm not a third year I'm first year...and...um it does matter if your pure blood, wizard born, half blood or muggle born... because if... if you are muggle born you... you cant tell anyone... especially if the person your telling is a slytherin... because they WILL hurt you... they may even try to kill you... they don't like muggle born's... they tend to believe that they're impure... that's why they call them mud bloods"
I think about the stories that dad told me when I was young about how because he was muggle born the other students hated him even some of the other ravenclaws.
I look up at Jack trying to calm my breathing and look at him properly for the first time and examineing each of his features. He has high cheek bones, messy hair and bright hazel eyes. He's stood up now I didn't and I consider standing too but realize that isn't a good idea seeing as my breathing is making me light-headed
" And DO NOT ever call me crazy Okay I've had enough people tell me that throughout my life"
I think about that kid daniel from my muggle school pushing me to the ground and calling me a crazy looser as him and his friends kicked and punched me
"please okay" I wisper so quietly I have no clue if Jack even heard it
" And your... your telling me I'm crazy because I didn't go to... to the hospital wing when you didn't go to the hospital when you couldn't sleep... so don't tell me what to do...or... or what I'm crazy for"
I pull my knees up to my chest and try to calm my breathing again but it doesn't help if anything it makes it worse and I start thinking about when the sorting hat screamed out the name of the house of the brave and bold and the imedeate doubts I had. I was diegnosed with anxiety when I was 8 about three months after dad died in-fact thats probably what caused it to start.
"I'm fine" I wisper knowing it was a lie but hope that Jack cant tell that even though I can tell he doesn't really care about what happens to me and that he just wants me out of his hair.
" Also I just realized..." I give Jack a weak grin
"wizard born's don't use the word 'dude' only half bloods and muggle born's know that word so...so I know now that your not pure blood or... or wizard born... s..so which one is it?"

The girl must have been delirious. Jack's brows drew together in consternation as he tried to make sense of her faultering sentences. "Iiii'm gonna go ahead and say this is not the best place for you to be," he disagreed, looking down with growing unease at the seated figure on the floor.

"Didn't we just agree that it doesn't matter what houses people are in? It's like horoscopes; they're just nonsense people choose to believe to make themselves feel better. If you're a first year, then you have no proof that any Slytherin or any other student would do anything you're saying they would. You can't just believe everything you hear, or generalize large groups of people and say what they'll do when you don't even know or understand them. That's what bigots do. Don't be ignorant."

He rolled his eyes for what felt like the hundreth time. "No teacher is going to just let other students hurt or try to kill each other. That's why this is crazy talk. I don't know anything of what you're going on about - mudbloods or half-bloods or whatever - but if the teachers haven't said anything, then I doubt it's anything to worry about." He wasn't even sure why he was bothering trying to reason with her in her current state, but it was the only thing he could do to try to calm her down.

Furthermore, the blatant spouting of nonsense he was certain wasn't true was beginning to get on his nerves. Stupidity and ignorance always did. It was as if she was being purposefully obtuse just to annoy him. Well, he couldn't say much about that, since he had just attempted something similar himself...but what bothered him in this case was that she really seemed to believe the words that were coming out of her mouth.

She stared at him for a while, and he wondered if she had been able to re-compose herself somewhat, but it disconcerted him a little to be stared at so intensely. "Uh...Earth to Alex...?" He waved a hand in front of her face.

"And DO NOT call me crazy, okay? I've had enough people tell me that throughout my life."

Oh...wonderful. So it wasn't just him, then; he was dealing with a bonafide nutjob. Then again, a lot of brilliant people were called crazy, so he supposed it didn't say much. Still, he had to bite back a smile at the irony of her words, convicting herself with her denial, which she obviously didn't see.

His eyes widened. "I didn't go to the hospital wing because I don't have nightmares that keep me from sleeping or breathing problems like you obviously do!" he bellowed, flailing his arms at her in exasperation. "Your issues are way more severe than mine! So you're either getting up right now, or I'm going to go call someone." A prefect, probably. A teacher would be less likely to understand the situation and more likely to ground them for being out of bed and in the library so late.

"I'm fine."

At those two, simple words, Jack's eyes narrowed sharply and his voice lowered in warning. "Don't you dare lie to my face. I hate liars. I don't care how delirious you are."

Throwing his arms up again, he groaned in deep frustration and turned to head out the library, with or without Alex following him. She needed medical attention, and soon. If she didn't follow him out, he would go fetch a prefect - probably the Gryffindor one would be best, since that was Alex's house, and she was freaked out by Slytherins for whatever reason - and bring them back to deal with her. Then she could be someone else's problem.

Sure...there was the small chance they could have believed him to be the cause of her state, but why would he have gone to find help for her, then?

"HAY where are you going... I... I'm okay really there's not much anyone can do to help me I have anxiety nothing anyone can...can to t...to help with that"
I lunge forward grabbing Jack's wrist and almost pulling him to the floor as I nearly fell but I righted myself quickly.
"and I...I'm not trying to...to be ignorant or lie...I...I just don't like when people try to help me in any way...becau... because I don't really feel like I need any help...s...so as far as your concerned I am fine...i.it's not like a...an anxiety attack i..is gonna kill me"
I let go of Jacks wrist barely realizeing I was still holding onto him when I heard a door open and footsteps echo trough the library...Jack yelling must have caught someones attention so I shove Jack up against a wall of bookshelves as gently as I can without hurting him and put my hand over his mouth
"listen...If you don't want to get some kind of suspention on your first night here I suggest you keep your voice low and follow me... my dad...my dad told me about a secret passage in the library that will take us into a secret part of the library were they wont ever find us so follow me okay"
I remove my shaking hand off of his face and grab his wrist again to make sure he follows me and I lead him into another part of the library and take a left turn and bump right into the person we were trying to avoid and fell back wood and fell onto the floor and the girl turned around. she was tall and in slytherin colors and a smirk etched across her face
"well well, what do we have here"
now I'm defineately panicking this time with more fear than anxiety

Griseldis made her way to the library to find some books about the new spell they were taught in class this afternoon. The homework they were given from the Charm Teacher Professor Vernatis was quite interesting so she was super excited to do it. It didn't take her long to arrive at her destination, during the night there weren't many students who would be there but that didn't change the fact how much she really missed doing homework in a library. A few months ago she got so busy with a lot of Prefect duties and planning new errands for this month. She understood that most students would love to participate errand in order to earn some pocket money but it wasn't that easy in Hogwarts. Tonight, she had some free time so she used the opportunity to visit the library but she hoped to study with her friends again like last year.

Being a second-year student, she already knew where to find the books for Charms. When she was on her way there, she heard someone was arguing very loudly which was frowned upon in a library where you were supposed to be quiet. As a Prefect it was her job to check what was going on. She followed the direction of that noise, then saw a tall Slytherin girl, a young Gryffindor girl who was on the ground, and a Slytherin boy behind her. "Hello there, is everything alright here?" Griseldis asked them, keeping a friendly smile on her face. The Prefect badge she wore on the right side of her chest should be obvious enough for them to see that she was a Gryffindor Prefect. She hoped that no one is causing any trouble so far cause she didn't really enjoy scolding people or giving them detentions. Griseldis looked at her fellow Gryffindor on the ground, the young girl seemed troubled and scared, she looked like she was panicking. Griseldis walked towards her, trying to calm the young girl down with her gentle smile and reached out her hand for her to take, "Here, take my hand, I'll help you up."

taking the Gryffindor prefect hand I pull myself up. The Slytherin girl must have realized that she couldn't pick much of a fight with a prefect in their midst's which was unfortunate because some small part of me despite my fear and anxiety wanted to fight but the girl turned around and walked off. I look at the prefect and try to control me breathing.
"um... yes we're f...fine me and my friend we're just looking for a book s...so we could study t...together"
I silently prayed to god that Jack would play along and not turn me into the Gryffindor prefect that... would NOT be good. Maybe if I can get us away from this prefect then I can get into my secret den that dad mapped out in his journal but not before saying goodbye to Jack although I can always send him an owl tomorrow and have him meet up with me. I turned back to the Gryffindor prefect
"So um... w...we will just be leaving I..if that's... um okay"
I start to step away but I stumble and fall back down onto the floor because I'm still lightheaded because of my breathing. I shake my head trying to will the dizziness but it wont work so I decide to sit there and wait a minuet or two until it goes away. After a minuet the dizziness goes away and I get up, by now my breathing has calmed and I'm only shacking a little...I let out a small sigh of releif.

When his wrist was grabbed, the redhead yelped at the force with which he was yanked backward, almost toppling over right along with his attacker. This was going way too far. She was keeping him from leaving, now?! And if that weren't enough, she had the gall to claim that she didn't feel like she needed any help? "Anxiety attacks have killed before," Jack told her angrily. "And if you don't feel like you need any help, why are you clinging to me?!"

Alex let go then, but someone else had soon come along. And then before he knew what was happening, Jack found himself shoved up against a wall with the girl's hand over his mouth. What in the name of Merlin's beard...?!

At that point, Jack thought he would have preferred to get a suspension on his first night in Hogwarts than follow that crazy girl anywhere, let alone where she thought some weird secret passage would be. For all he knew, she was trying to get him alone where she could murder him and hide his body.

He was also getting sick of being man-handled. As soon as her hand was off his mouth, it was around his wrist again. The Slytherin was just thinking he would have preferred to take his chances with whoever Alex was trying to avoid - especially when he saw it was someone in his own house colors - when yet another student came along. This one, however, had a Prefect badge pinned to her robes. Jack sighed in immense relief.

"Everything is definitely not alright here," the boy was quick to explain, fearing someone would try to silence him with a hand over his mouth again. "It's the opposite of alright. This girl's having a panic attack or an anxiety attack or something and I told her I was going to go try to find help, but then she not only told me she didn't need help, she grabbed me and covered my mouth and kept me from leaving!"

Attempting to wrench his wrist from the fallen Gryffindor's hand, he continued in a calmer, more serious voice, "She said her name is Alex Tyler. And we're not friends," he insisted, glaring at Alex for her labeling him as such during her explanation. "We weren't looking for a book or going to study together! Are you just a pathological liar, or what? I never lie!" Turning back to the prefect to curb his fury, he asked, "Can I leave her with you? Because if I'm not needed here, I'd really like to get back to my dormitory, please."
