Roleplaying as Hans Jenssen
Perfection was the lowest standard.
Hans was a person who refuses to disappoint. With a moment feeling of such importance on no other date but the 14th of February, today he was most definitely not letting down expectations. Without access to his wingman nor the internet nor any romantic experience — though of course he would be quick to reassure nothing of that matter was intended — he became the embodiment of “fuck around and find out”. The past two days had been casual talk with meeting friends both old and new, yet his usual confidence was letting him down as the date loomed closer to today. And finally, Valentine's Day had come, and Astrid had agreed to his anything-but-subtle invitation
Without any more time left to ponder he now sat on the hilltop he had only just discovered yesterday as everything was laid out before him. The blanket was spread across grass that still playfully pricked at Hans when he sat, with some of the pastries Astrid had been particularly fond of in their arrival tea party, the bredele things and the macarons, especially of the flavour she favoured. Since actual food was also excepted for a brunch -- for, come on, all of that was merely dessert -- a platter with two sandwiches, both cut in half, awaited them, partnered by a pitcher of orange juice (because Hans could still not bring himself to drink tea).
Allowing expectant eyes over the large spread of Beauxbaton’s campus, Hans could do little more than await in unsteady eagerness. His patience most certainly paid off as he spotted the distant blonde, merely a smudge amongst the wildflowers peaking out against the late winter chill. With exactly the same determination yet undertone of sweetness as the flora of France, as Hans' gaze laid upon the best outfit he had seen her in yet it was as if she too was a part of the immaculate scenery. The difference was the stray wind that breathed life into her with the personality he adored.
Pressing down the tension that once more burnt up his chest as if he had just had a swig of whiskey, Hans forced the emotion to turn on its head as it was pushed back towards him as excitement. After all, anxiety and elation were both caused by dopamine. He could improvise some thin excuse an make it work, he could deliver a speech in front of hundreds, God, he could even spill his heart of distress before the girl during the fall ball. There was absolutely no reason why he would be even scarcely fretful in the company of someone who brought as much comfort as Astrid did.
"Astrid!" He called as he promptly let go of the worries he decided he would not even bother to make time for, waving for the girl's attention though he was sure she knew where she was heading, "I'm so glad you're here!"

Friday, February 14th. Such a weird date to go picnic with a friend, right? Astrid had always been painfully oblivious to romantic advances from others, friendship being one of the most important thing to her. But she had been noticing things for a few months now. Things that made her think that maybe Hans wanted her to be more that his friend. But that couldn't be true, they were friends and it was a very nice friendship that the girl held very close to her heart. And that was very good because the boy didn't have a crush on her... right? She thought "whatever" as she finished getting ready for that picnic. She was wearing a blue, floor-length, long-sleeved, sequin dress, that had belonged to Viktoria. The girl had been wearing "simpler" outfits since summer camp, but when she wore makeup, she still had this originality that she had before with outfits. It was quite sad, really, the reason why she stopped wearing layers of skirts and dresses. Astrid used to love the weight of the clothes, but now it just reminded her of the slugs - that she definitely didn't want to think about. She sighed, looked into the mirror one more time, and made her way to where Hans asked her to meet him.
Astrid spotted the boy up a small hill in Beauxbatons' gardens. She smiled as she walked towards him. "You know he's totally into you, right?" had said one of her friends a couple of weeks ago. "No he's not, we're friends." had she replied. But now she wasn't so sure. Had she really accepted a picnic date on Valentine's day? Was she about to friendzone Hans? Ugh, fuck it. She just hoped that whatever happened today, they'd stay friends. Because she really needed that friendship.
Hans was sitting on a blanket next to pastries, sandwiches, and orange juice. Macarons were mostly raspberry flavoured, and the girl grinned seeing that. "Astrid!" the boy said, waving as Astrid was reaching the hilltop. "I'm so glad you're here!" She waved back, sitting down on the other side of the blanket. "Hey! I see you prepared everything!" she said, tilting her head towards the picnic. "How are you?"

To say that Astrid looked gorgeous in the royal blue dress would be an understatement. Hans had not noticed the girl's change in her preference of clothing; even if he had he would not make the connection to the events of summer that seemed more as a fever dream than real life, from the highest of highs that August night to their concerning encounter with hag slugs. Yet Hans had little care for what Astrid was wearing. Even if the sequins did not reflect the light, highlighting the girl by his side as a shining angel, she would have shone nevertheless. Unlike how Nikolai made his eyes hurt looking at him was the bright Helios incarnate, Astrid seemed to be the moon in comparison, a much more welcoming sight, yet making her nightly rotations just as the sun did his daily.
"Yeah," Hans said, chuckling though with a hint of nervousness as he looked over the spread again. "I have macarons! The flavour you like too." The name of the dessert sent visions of the sale, crumbly ones he had seen yesterday, though their state was no the only unpleasantness connotated. They had been thrown onto the ground in her rage and their shared frustration, a meeting originally anticipated with elated penmanship burdened and crushed by the lack of communication. Words that had centred around Astrid, despite Meiyu having never even met her, making him regret ever telling anything to the girl.
But if you think Hans would bring any of that into today, think again. Eyes lighting up as he settled on Astrid's grin, he said cheerily. "I feel great! I've been looking around the school, to be honest it seems more responsible than Hogwarts at least..." He smiled into the distance as his eyes briefly wandered over where he had trekked across yesterday, before his gaze snapped back onto the one of the girl before him, determined to be focusing on her and her solely for the picnic. After all he could have explored the grounds anytime, but today was too perfect for him to be distracted elsewhere, "Though, I digress. How are you doing? Enjoying, well-" he said, spreading his hands "-all this?"

The sky was blue, the air cool but warmer than in Durmstrang, macarons and other stuff were on the blanket between the two friends, and chaos seemed to have stayed in Scotland. This picnic could only be great. No spells thrown out randomly, no slugs, no deaths, no enchanted dolls. So basically not a Hogwarts event. It felt great, being out of Durmstrang and not be surrounded by chaos. But hey, it had only been two days, anything could happen.Hans laughed a bit, adding "I have macarons! The flavour you like too." Astrid eyed the raspberry macarons. "I saw, thank you! I know you're not the biggest fan of overly sweet things." The boy had told her that two days ago, and it was something that she couldn't understand. Like, what's the point of desserts if they're not sweet? As the french say, les goûts et les couleurs, and she would respect that. Even if she really couldn't understand it.
Astrid took one of said raspberry macaron, as the boy talked, his eyes looking around before locking onto her. "I feel great! I've been looking around the school, to be honest it seems more responsible than Hogwarts at least..." The girl nodded to that last part, a hand in front of her mouth while she was eating her macaron. "Though, I digress. How are you doing? Enjoying, well-all this?" How was she doing? Well at this instant she was doing great. But in general she was still traumatized by the slugs and the events of the fall ball. "I guess I'm okay, and thank you for the picnic," she said with a smile. "You're totally right though, this school does feel safer than Hogwarts. I would still stay away from crowds because we never know..."

Okay was a disheartening adjective to Hans’ ears. Ultimately, it was not synonymous with perfection. Perhaps he should have looked past the hinderance in word choice, considering the amount of trauma they had been subjected to the past year at outings like today’s, yet a boy usually careless to the opinion of others, he could not help but hyper-fixate his mind on that one word. No matter how enjoyable of a picnic, how pristinely he laid out the refreshments or how well-mannered he displayed himself, the issues that troubled them were out of his control — slugs and terrorists that he was helpless to demolish. Faltering slightly, he edged himself back into the flow of conversation, though sounding not quite natural after his bout of overthinking, “Anytime.”
Commanding his vision and a racing mind to focus only on the smile Astrid offered him in response, a slight reminder of the light in the world amongst the darkness that surrounded their little oasis, he moved on from the ‘great’ that was never vocalised. Her next words, however, elicited a smile from Hans even as he understood she meant it a completely different way. Voice lowered slightly as he studied those blue grey eyes, “I wouldn’t mind staying away from the crowds if I’m with company like you.” Ha! Was he flirting ? Not that the oblivious Astrid would notice probably. She not being able to take a hint was half the trouble and half her charm. If he with his fearless nature would ever fear anything romantic rejection was quite an absurd choice but what he dwelt on more was the uncertainty. At his own emotions, at Astrid’s emotions, at what may become of their shared emotions post Valentine’s Day, whether for better or worse.
Hans realised he had not yet even taken a bite at the assortment he had laid out, and watching as Astrid finished her own raspberry macaron (the ones he had acquired specifically for her, because he would rather keep his distance from the gustative heaven), he took a sandwich, if only out of etiquette. After all, it would be uncanny, if not rude, to invite her out to a picnic just to watch her eat. The picnic blanket rustled under them as a breeze past, riling the rolling expanse of green. Taking a bite, the wind tousled his hair as he ate, the messy strands familiar as they graced over his eyes, no different from the high-speed drafts through his races in the open sky. Self-consciously, he wiped his fingers on a napkin and pushed it back, not to much avail as another breeze came. Dealing with the wind was still better than doing this in some crowded dining hall, he reminded himself. “Bomb or no it’s nice being away from people, isn’t it?… Also, do you like my hair like this better or pushed back?”
“Oh, on the topic of that…” Hans said, laughing softly as his cheeks turned a subtle pink, “I mean on the topic of today being Valentine’s Day— Astrid, what’s your opinion on romance?”

Hans' answer "I wouldn’t mind staying away from the crowds if I’m with company like you." brought back what her friends had told her. As she was getting ready just moments before, one of her roommates kept telling her that come on Astrid, he's totally into you! Another had joined in, yeah, honestly girl, you're blind. The girl had laughed it off because there was no way they were right. She didn't want them to be right so she just looked over the younger boy and smiled sincerely before sipping on some orange juice. The wind was blowing lightly, rustling the blanket they were sat on. Astrid turned her head slightly so the wind would push her hair out of her face instead of in her face, her undercut peaking with some stronger gusts of wind. "Bomb or no it’s nice being away from people, isn’t it?… Also, do you like my hair like this better or pushed back?" She turned her head back towards the boy, keeping her hair out of her face with her hand. "Yeah, the calm is nice. And your hair looks good either way, but to be honest it's however you like it that matters."
Hans was blushing — slightly, but Astrid noticed. "Oh, on the topic of that…" he laughed softly, "I mean on the topic of today being Valentine’s Day— Astrid, what’s your opinion on romance?" Oh fuck her friends were right. "Uh..." Hans had been one of Astrid's closest friends for the past 7 months and she didn't want their friendship to end. And she also wanted them to be clear on what was going on because she didn't want this to be a miscommunication problem. "Well I guess romance is great and can be important in romantic relationships. Which I don't really see myself in at the moment. Why?

“Which I don't really see myself in at the moment.”
Right. Honestly, Hans didn’t know what sort of answer he was supposed to be expecting, but this should have been one of the responses. He should have been prepared for the ever common occurrence of rejection — of course with all the factors of age and relationship status and whatever else went into the mysterious primordial soup that built romantic interest, success should have been more miracle than commonplace. And especially from someone like Astrid. It was just so unfair that her rejection of romance somehow made Hans like her more, which, he reminded himself, he ought to be stopping now. Keeping his composure in check and giving no hint he had been hoping for one answer in particular, he eventually settled on something to say.
“In that case then, I just want you to know something, and you don’t need to do anything about it,” he prefaced. He took care to clarify that he was merely telling Astrid of his infatuation, not asking her to, in return, agree to any romantic involvement. For the last seven months he had enjoyed a surprisingly close friendship, having only further known her out of a crush he thought would be fleeting, yet realising he valued her infinitely more than that. Of course he would have enjoyed being something more than just friends with Astrid, but his friendship with her came first, and he was not jeopardising that. Letting out a steady breath as if puffing out cigarette smoke, he said, “I like you, Astrid.”
Hans didn’t know why the conversation had seemed to have taken a turn for such seriousness. This was meant to be fun, it was meant to be friendly, and he was alright with it staying friendly. He broke into a smile, as his hands subconsciously reached to his hair as his thoughts trailed back to what Astrid’s words. The cruel thing about attraction is that no matter how much you wanted it to go away, it just clung on stubbornly, like a small child mulishly asking for more chocolate. “You’re beautiful,” he said, looking into the face where all that physical attractiveness concentrated on, “And that goes beyond what you look like. You are sweet and kind and loyal, and I love the way you smile. And seriously, I could go on and on listing all your qualities, but even if you’re not looking for anything romantic, I just wanted you to know, okay?”

And yeah, the boy probably had expected a different answer, or else he wouldn't have asked. But that was her truth. Romance was not her thing. She never had imagined herself in a relationship with anyone, never saw the appeal. Like sure, she gets it, but for other people, not herself. Astrid was a friendship person, not a romantic partner. My bad, dude."In that case then, I just want you to know something, and you don’t need to do anything about it," Hans started. There it came, the thing everyone — like, five people — have been telling her for weeks. Astrid nodded, encouraging him to continue. "I like you, Astrid." She let out a sigh, and smiled a little. He smiled, hands in his hair. It was bound to happen, he literally tried to save her from the hag slugs a few days after they officially met. He looked at her, "You’re beautiful." She rolled her eyes, smiling softly, and he wasn't done. "And that goes beyond what you look like. You are sweet and kind and loyal, and I love the way you smile. And seriously, I could go on and on listing all your qualities, but even if you’re not looking for anything romantic, I just wanted you to know, okay?"
She breathed in. Out. And again, thinking about what to respond. Because what do you say when one of your best friends tells you he likes you? And like, why? "I... Well, thanks? I guess? I know some people wont be surprised." Astrid sighed, chuckled a bit. "But yeah, I'm not looking for anything romantic, not now and... Probably not ever, I don't know. I'm sorry." She looked at Hans with an apologetic smile. She really was sorry she had to friendzone him like that. "But I really value our friendship. And I would really like for it to stay the same."

“You’re welcome,” he offered, though it sounded half-hearted, a mere instinctive response to Astrid’s own half-hearted gratitude. Hans had been aware of his evident infatuation, and the existent possibility that Astrid may not return his feelings. He had been well prepared, for both the best and the worst. He just did not think… it would be like this — no condemnation, no commendation, but rather an in between of questioning.
Astrid sighed, and chuckled. Hans would have managed a laugh if he were sitting with anyone else.
She offered Hans and apologetic smile, and a part of him wanted to rush to console that there was no need for remorse, while the other desperately tried to convince him to shoot one more chance.
“Of course it can stay the same,” Hans reassured, “I’d like for it to stay the same too.” Since they had first met properly after the absurdist battle against the hag slugs, to today, sitting on a picnic blanket together, a setting so romantic yet stuck in a relationship as platonic as theirs, with the pain of unrequited love. Han had always been fond of taking risks, calculated or otherwise, and it was true he had put their friendship in peril when he had extended his feelings. Yet, it did not have to be in peril — it was a matter of a choice, and he chose to keep their boat steadily afloat.
Eventually, after a lingering moment of silence, though not an awkward one, Hans let out a breath and took a bite of the sandwich. He had done more overthinking than eating so far, but hunger begged he reconsider his priorities. It was difficult, however, to think of priorities post heartbreak. Yet moving on, whether in love or otherwise, was a skill inevitably learnt, and Hans would soon recognise its value as he met Astrid’s eyes, staring into their fjord-blue depths for a few fleeting moments. He glanced away, eyes flitting across the pastel beauty of Beauxbatons, before finally, changing the subject as if nothing had happened, tone calm, even.
Their flow of conversation unrestricted and uncontained, they spoke akin to the currents of a river — fast at times, slower at others, a current of topics whichever came to mind first. He would have preferred if they held hands, would have preferred that sweet smile a little too close to his own, but for this moment of happiness, he was content enough to not ruin it with his own selfishness. Eventually, they descended into laughs, until afternoon dipped evening and the sky was painted a red-gold sunset.
