Dear Alejandro,

Hello! Nice to meet you, even if it’s only in a letter. My name is Alyss, I’m a first year Slytherin and I grew up in a little coastal town in Scotland. I enjoy reading, bird watching, and baking. My favorite place to visit is either my grandparents house or the magizoo. I love lots of different foods, but I can’t handle much spice. Italian pastas are probably my favorite to eat on special occasions. What about yourself? Do you have any favorite foods or hobbies?

Kind Regards,
Alyss Gilmour.

Dear Alyss Hello Alyss,

I'm Alejandro, a second year Gryffindor. Nice to meet you Alyss. Hope you're settling in well here at Hogwarts. As you can probably tell from my name, I am Spanish. Half Spanish but I've lived my whole life in London. One of my favourite places to visit is Valencia. It's a city in Spain. That's where my dad is from and me and my family go there almost every summer. I like playing football and quidditch. Have you ever watched/played Quidditch before. It's a very fun sport!

Hello Alejandro!

Spain sounds so cool! My family doesn’t travel much, so I’ve never been. I’ve played a little bit of football, but I found I’m not very good at it. As silly as it may sound, I’m a little bit scared of quidditch. Watching it is so fun, but being on a broom is scary enough as it is, much less with people trying to hit you off! Do you play quidditch for Gryffindor, or just for fun?

Hello Alyss,

Yeah, Quidditch can be quite dangerous sometimes but aren't other sports as well. It took some time for me to get used to flying on a broom but now I can manage well. I only discovered Quidditch last year when I got into Hogwarts. I tried out for the Gryffindor team but I'm not sure if I've made the cut. Hopefully I did. What about you? Are you thinking about joining any of the sports teams here?

Hello Alejandro!

I hope you made the team, you sound so talented! I have been interested in dueling, because who doesn’t love a little bit of a fight? It also just seems so cool. Being able to truly use the spells we learn in class consistently? That’s also good for academics, right? I did sign up for broom racing too, because although being on a broom is scary, in quidditch there are flying balls trying to hit you! At least in broom racing it’s just other racers. Did you take an interest in another sport before quidditch, or has it always been quidditch for you?

Hello Alyss,

First of all, sorry for my late response. The letter got mixed up with someone else's and I had to find the girl who had it. That's not an easy job considering there's hundreds of students here. In other news, I think I've made the team as a first string chaser. My first match will be in October. Wow, I don't think I'll last long in duelling. Is it bad that I don't pay much attention in Transfiguration?
Duelling and broom racing I think are quite similar. Broom Racing is just duelling but racing on brooms. Last year I took part in friendly broom races. I decided I liked Quidditch more and here I am. Before Quidditch I liked football. I still like football. I lived in the muggle world before coming here so it was a pretty big thing.

Hi!

You know, I almost thought you’d forgotten about me! I’m sorry your letters got mixed up, but I’m glad everything got figured out.
I’m so glad you made the team, congratulations! I heard about the game, it was a few weeks ago, right? You guys beat Hufflepuff, great job! Now I’m sure you won’t be quite as successful against Slytherin, but only time will tell! That’s a long ways away, in the Spring, right? Or was it winter?

Don’t worry, I don’t pay attention in transfiguration either, and I’m looking to join the two sports in which spells actually matter! I saw that when playing Quidditch, you guys don’t really cast many spells- why is that? Wouldn’t that better your chances? Like blindfold the opponent so that they’re stuck removing the blindfold while you score! Either way, my appreciation for all the sports offered her is very high, and I’m super excited to see how everything plays out!

Signed,

Hi Alyss!

It's me again. Yep we beat Hufflepuff but I don't think we can beat Ravenclaw or Slytherin but I'll keep being optimistic. That match I feel like dragged on for far too long. In the heavy rain no less!

Well Alyss, to your question about spells in quidditch, I don't really know. You'll have to ask the creator of Quidditch for the exact answer. My answer, I guess it's too dangerous to cask spells that high up. For example, if you blindfold someone and they're not very good on a broom, they'll fall all the way to their death. Fun right? I'm really excited for our next match Ravenclaw. Hopefully I get to do more stuff and please pray the weather be good.

Cheers

Alejandro,

It’s nice to hear from you! Congrats on your win, I hear that it’s always nice to be victorious—I’m still not on a team, so I don’t really know what it’s like, but our Racing team did manage to defeat their curse, and win their first race in I think forever, so that’s something!

Haha, yeah, I guess that makes sense. I mean, Racing does it, but they also don’t have bludgers flying around with the sole purpose of knocking them from their brooms. I hope you do more stuff in your next match against Ravenclaw, and that you do well!

Winter is coming up, I’ve never experienced a winter at Hogwarts…do you think it’s bad? Like, worse than home? I live in Stornoway, so it can’t be that bad, right?

Best wishes,
Alyss Gilmour
