Is the rp in summer mode still? I wasn't sure if I could post in the sorting ceremony or even anywhere rp wise. I also wasn't sure if you actually start on Sept 1st. I know some HP sites do and some don't.

We are in the summer, yes. But you can forward date threads up to three months. So, you can post threads that occur at the beginning of the school year, provided you make note that the topic occurs at that point.
