The Great Hall is a large room with four long tables where students of each House sit during the day and at mealtimes. A majestic enchanted ceiling that mirrors the outside weather is watching over people in the room.
When you just pass the door from the Entrance Hall, Hufflepuff's table is a bit far. This table is the fourth one, after Gryffindor and Ravenclaw on the left and Slytherin on the right. Hufflepuff students are sharing meals and good talks at this table, and you will always be warmly welcomed there.
This is a RPG topic where all students are welcome to post.
All RPG rules apply. Word count per post is 200 words, not including quotes, ooc chat or other people's words. Any flood type of message will be deleted after a warning owl is sent.
Every soul is an ancient story.

New year, new students! It felt strange though, sitting at the Hufflepuff table before the sorting happened. It was a new year and new students were going to be coming to Hogwarts and enjoying the many marvels of the castle. Last year Ellie remembered being in awe of the whole grandeur and couldn't wait to see the new firsties amazement and cheer for them when they joined house Hufflepuff. Was my sorting really already a year ago? She still remembered when the sorting hat had announced her house like it was yesterday.
Flashback, exactly a year ago
"Randensmith, Ellie" was called.
Ellie's heart was beating hard as she walked up to where the sorting hat was sitting and it was placed on her head. The hat slid over her eyes and Ellie's heart skipped a beat, waiting for the hat to announce her future
"Hmm, a brain that loves to learn but giving the choice between friends and brains, you would choose friends... hmm so a loyal mind too. Well with that in there, it better be..." HUFFLEPUFF!
Ellie jumped recalling how she had looked at her fried when that was announced to be her house last year, then realizing last part of the hat saying Hufflepuff was the real sorting hat saying -or singing- Hufflepuff with its opening song! The sorting had begun and the first years were already in the hall! How had she missed them walk in?!? Ellie smiled, welcoming the new year, new memorys, new friends and most importantly, new first years to welcome.

Lydia took the hat off her head, and skipped off to the Hufflepuff table, hair colours wildly oscillating. She hadn't really had any preference on houses, nor honestly heard much about any of them, save for the gossip on the train. She sort of thought she was supposed to care a bit more, but it wasn't like a house was going to change her character. Hufflepuff seemed nice enough, and Lydia really did like the colour yellow quite a bit. And she'd heard that that Hufflepuff dorms were warm and friendly and colorful.
The table itself looked just like the others, which is to say full of smiling faces, and delicious smelling food. A little more hesitantly, Lydia scooted to an open seat. There were actually quite a number of older students; it was exciting to be part of a house, but a little nerve-wracking. She didn't know anything about these people, and they probably already all knew their way around Hogwarts. But a lot of them were smiling at her, which Lydia supposed was a good sign. And, she reasoned, a full seventh of them were firsties just like her, so would be in the same position as her, and eager to make friends.

Maisie, having regained her usual demeanor and clapping wildly with her new house not ten minutes after her own sorting, was glad to see that the girl with fiery red hair was coming her way. She quickly scooted a bit to make more room. She remembered what her mum said about 'when you meet new people don't try to scare the hell out of them with your questions ', but Maisie was dying to know about the girl. She was the girl she noticed at King's Cross, and she was dying to know everything about her, since her mother had made her sit with her brothers on the ride to Hogwarts, she hasn't really met any first years. And a full train ride with boys one or two years older than you, cracking jokes, doing pranks, and just chatting about absolutely wild things about what they did in the summer was definitely NOT something she wanted to hear on her first ride.
She was happy she belonged somewhere, and this night was gonna be awesome.
While roars and clapping filled the room, Maisie turned to face the girl. "Hi, I'm Maisie Williams, what's your name? How was your ride? What's your favorite thing about the castle? What's...oh, I probably should let you answer them one by one. I talk too fast sometimes... "

"Liljendahl, Eleanor", Eleanor heard her name to be called in front of the Hall. Taking a deep breath she walked to the chair, turned around to see all the people sitting at the tables or waiting their turn to be sorted into a house. How mesmerizing it was, to think that soon she would know which house she would belong to these upcoming years. "Maybe I will be Ravenclaw, like my parents..." she muttered to herself. Almost forgetting to sit down, the Professor holding the hat had to clear their throat to get her away from her thoughts. Spooked a little bit, Eleanor sat down, and felt how soft, warm hat was placed on her head covering part of her long, blond hair...
"Ahhh, a bright mind I see... maybe even too bright and curious to protect herself...
your parents were Ravenclaws, huh? I can feel that, indeed...
but your pure soul, loyalty, kindness and good-willing nature would indicate me something else... even though your hunger for knowledge, courage would suggest indeed house of Raven or even a house of Lion... but no, I am pretty sure you belong to... HUFFLEPUFF"
Eleanor didn't remember even half of what the hat said, even if she had decided to remember every single word, since her mother said that you can learn more from the sorting hat than from any book. After the hat was taken of her head, she walked smiling to Hufflepuff table. She made a quick glance around the table, seeing all those happy and excited faces in the middle of the conversation. She saw a blond and red-haired girl right ahead, blond girl excitedly talking to other people sitting around her. There was just enough space for a small girl like Eleanor to sit, so she decided to take her place next to talkative-seeming blond girl, but without enough courage to interrupt her talking..

Malcolm felt a sense of satisfied relief wash over him when he heard the hat's cry of "Hufflepuff!" echo through the Great Hall. This is what he'd wanted, deep down. But it actually happening felt like a weight getting lifted off his shoulders.
Let the rest of the school whisper about how the Hufflepuffs were the 'nice ones', the 'leftovers', the 'boring' ones. He knew better. As someone who'd grown up in a family who'd mostly been in this House over the centuries, Hufflepuff was anything but mild. It was a House for the dedicated and loyal, for those who'd stand up for what's right, no matter if glory came along with doing that or not.
As for being nice? Well... some Hufflepuffs could be nice, sure. But not any more than members of any other House. One interaction with his Great Aunt Finola would teach you that right quick. She'd won a Quidditch match back in the day by headbutting the opposing Seeker mid-dive. Broke the other girl's nose in the process, and had earned not only the Quidditch Cup, but a month's worth of detentions as well. To this day, she still thought it was worth it. He remembered the last time somebody visiting the Arboretum had made this mistake of calling her of all people a 'sweet old lady' when they saw the little badger pin she still wore on her robes. Merlin, that had been fun to watch.
Still chuckling to himself at the memory, he wheeled his chair to the far table where the other students were already clapping for him. He came to a stop beside one of the benches with the other first years. He gave his fellow Housemates a small nod, still feeling a little shy. "Hey there."
This was going to be something... different, at least. Unless you counted the past few weeks at summer camp, being around kids who weren't related to him was a whole new experience. Malcolm wanted his brother to be here with him when this day came, the same way he'd always been there. It would have made this whole thing much less terrifying. But he'd promised his twin he'd make most of his time here, so he'd do his best.
He glanced back at the Professor's table behind where other first years were still getting sorted, then looked towards the older students, a curious look on his face. "Is the headmaster always wearin' a full suit of armor, then?"

Lydia quizzically looked at Maisie -- did the girl not recognize her? They'd shared a tent together at summer camp, and Lydia had thought they'd at least made decent progress towards being friends.
She ran her fingers through her hair, trying to think of what to say. Some strands fell off into her hands and, oh, it was a lot redder than usual. Darn. She was really trying to get the oscillating hair colour thing under control, but it seemed to have a mind of it's own, especially when stressed. But at least this would explain why Maisie seemed to not recognize her -- Lydia's hair had been a lot lighter over camp, almost more blonde than red. Oh. She hadn't ever told the other girl about the metamorphagus-like-hair-oscillations-that-definetly-weren't-metamorhagus-talents-because-she-didn't-want-her-mom-and-brother-to-dislike-her-or-be-uncomfortable. Probably no time like the present for that, though she really hoped Maisie wouldn't hold it against her; she'd really enjoyed getting to know the other girl at camp, and was excited that they would be in the same house.
"Maisie, it's me! Lydia. From camp? My hair just sort of changes colors sometimes, it's probably weird accidental magic"
But now there were a decent amount of first years around the table with them, so Lydia answered the questions anyways.
"I'm Lydia Walsh! From Dundee. The ride was sort of uneventful, honestly it was more of a pain to get to King's Cross to get the train, we had to get all the way to London only to come back up to Scotland." Lydia paused. Maisie had rapid-fire asked a lot of questions, and she wanted to answer them all, but not crowd the others.
She decided to make up the difference by talking really fast, figuring at least Maisie would be fine with that given the speed she was talking, "the castle is amazing! I love the ceiling, and the forest and lake look so inviting! and we haven't even seen half of it yet"
Turning to the others, she asked "Are the rest of you excited for classes? What sorts of things do you like? Do any of you play football? Do any of you want to go exploring the castle later?" She hoped she wasn't being too overbearing; there was a shy-looking small blonde girl that had sat right beside Maisie, and she didn't want to overwhelm her.
She smiled at the boy in the wheelchair, shifting her attention to him, just in time to hear him ask about the headmaster's armor. Lydia giggled, she wasn't sure herself, but it was rather distinctive, and now that she thought about it a little odd, and perhaps slightly intimidating. Maybe one of the older students could answer his question.

Oh wait... I thought the camp thing happens after September 1st, so chronologically, although we did meet, it was after September first, so they didn't really know each other now.. but now I checked the time and it's in July ..my bad.
Forward date to September first.
Looking back at Lydia, she discovered it was the girl she'd befriend and shared a tent with back in July. It was fun, and they made many memories. " Hi, Lydia! Wow, it's so cool you can change hair color! You can just change into whatever you like, right? Are you a metamorphagus? That's such a cool ability! I've read about them, and there was even a kid in my prep school before Hogwarts that had the ability. I don't think it's weird magic, it makes you stand out in a really unique way! Wanna go explore the castle together? I've always really wanted to go to the towers! And we can always go find the Giant Squid by the boathouse. That was really exciting. Maybe we can even go around the forbidden forest outskirts, and try to see inside it."
"Football would be nice, tough where are we going to find a football? Maybe we can get one of the older students to transfigure something into it, because wizards don't play it, do they? Exploring the castle would be great, we can make our own Marauder's Map if we know all the secret spots! What do you think, Lydia?" She said excitedly to the girl sitting next to her.
She recognized the boy in a wheelchair as Malcolm, a boy who had found her in the common room some nights ago.
"Hm.. maybe the headmaster's ready for another battle like the one some years ago? Though it would be awful if there was another dark lord. Or maybe it's just a habit after being in war? Looks cool, though."
She noticed a shy looking girl sitting by Lydia. " Hi, I'm Maisie, what's your name?"

"Nice to meet you Lydia, and all others,", Eleanor said nodding to all the others sitting around the table, not yet sure if she heard all the names. But she didn't have time to worry it much when she noticed all the food plates and bowls in the middle of the table, and realized that she's actually starving. While fulfilling her plate, she listened to the boy in the wheelchair asking about the Headmaster's armor and Lydia tell about her color changing hair. When they started talking about exploring Eleanor couldn't contain her excitement.
Eleanor turned her face to Lydia and the others excited sparkle in her eyes "Oooh, I'm always up to exploring! Who knows what kind of secrets this place holds", she answered while buttering her slice of bread. "I'm also excited about Herbology and Care for Magical Beasts, even if my father says it's not a lucrative career option..", she continued.
"Oh sorry, I think I didn't even tell my name", Eleanor realizes and blushes. "I'm Eleanor, Eleanor Liljendahl. My both parents were Ravenclaws here so kinda thought I would be too, but I don't mind belonging in Hufflepuff", she continues quickly. Then her face darkens a bit and she turns to a blond girl. "My parents told something about the battle, but not much.. there couldn't be any dark lords anymore, right? How could that kind of evil exist anymore after something like that", she mutters, without being able to even comprehend how it would've been like to be a student during that time.

I approached, slowly, nervously. I was dreading this moment since I arrived. I gave a quick look back at each of the hundreds of students, all curiously looking toward me as I approached the wooden stool. I sat down, the hat placed upon my head. There was a huge silence. I held my breath, waiting as patiently as possible. After a few moments, without explanation, the sorting hat made its decision.
"Hufflepuff!".
The Hufflepuff table naturally erupted in cheers as I stood up, the hat removed from my head.
I grinned and steadily walked alongside the Hufflepuff table, finding a spot placed deep within to sit.
I was near a set of first year students, all chatting amongst themselves. The voice of one particular girl, extremely bright red hair, a warm tone about her, was heard louder than the rest.
She spoke for a few moments, asking all sorts of welcoming questions to each person.
"Are the rest of you excited for classes? What sorts of things do you like? Do any of you play football? Do any of you want to go exploring the castle later?"
She was asking quickly.
I spoke up, trying to socialise with the fellow students around me.
"I-I don't mind a bit of footy, I also enjoy to play the piano!"
I spoke in a bright tone, trying so desperately to seem like an approachable, kind person.
"Uhh, so what is everyone's names, if you don't mind me asking?"
"Finnian Hallowell."

Just to be clear, my message was set just before Maisie's last. I know Eleanor has stated her name to the group in the previous message. Sorry for any sort of confusion!
