AquariusReducioAt first glance, Aislin is a kid obsessed with bugs. Because they're cool, firstly, but also because so many people don't like them and she thinks everything sort of weird and scary deserves a chance. She's smart and quick to challenge things that sound wrong, not that she always knows what's actually true. Smart does not equate studious for Aislin; she struggles to focus in classes and do homework for all but the few subjects that have captured her interest. Even when she tries, sometimes the words she listens to fall right back out her ears.
Raised as an only child, she’s learned to be independent so far as entertaining herself, not so much reminding herself to eat meals at reasonable times and to do her homework. Her friends before coming to Hogwarts were her cousins, who came as friends mostly by relation and proximity. They are where she picked up an adventurous streak, following them on various childhood hijinks, but she's not a daredevil, either, preferring to watch and see how something goes.
She isn't particularly self-conscious by virtue of being not that aware of judgements other people might be making; Aislin is too caught up in doing her own thing, and besides, why shouldn't she go where her curiosity takes her? Now that she's been made a prefect, she is trying to be more responsible and make her mam proud.

Aislin is the only child of a single mother, Sylvia Darragh the daughter of a long line of witches and wizards that had never been too picky about who married in. Her father left the picture early. As a Muggle-born, his relationship with his family was already tense as he dodged questions about whether he would move back home, away from all that magic they found childish at best and associated with demons at worst. He had yet to tell them he was in love with a witch, much less that he was having a child with one, and he was unprepared to fully sever ties with his parents so he bailed. He’s a professor of astronomy at a wizarding university in Glasgow, now, but even after he staked claim to his own life he never tried to reenter Aislin’s. In his absence he left an infant and a young witch just starting her career in Potions who had not been planning on raising a child alone. Luckily, Sylvia had her family close and closer still with the convenience of magical transportation, willing to lighten the load. A wand wood farm had long been in the Darragh family and was where both of Sylvia’s parents and her older sister’s family lived, so Aislin spent many of her pre-tutoring days following her older cousins around, watching her grandfather when he carved a new wand, and searching for bugs in the dirt. And when the farm was too busy for a tiny child, Sylvia’s best friend Christine worked magic to clear her schedule and take over, just as she had worked some kind of magic to land herself in a house just down the street from them. Aislin’s father may have bailed, but Christine was always around right when Sylvia needed her. Eventually Sylvia took a job that allowed her to fill most potion orders from home so she could be around her kid more, except for when Aislin went to tutoring with the neighboring wizard kids. She let Aislin watch her brew and hand her certain ingredients; the little girl was always quite pleased with herself when she could identify the different plants and animal parts. They have two cats and have Christine over for dinner at least once a week, since she lives alone. Sylvia and Aislin live in a small town with a predominantly magical community in Longford County, Ireland, in a tiny house surrounded by a lot of nature. Most of Aislin's childhood was spent outside, exploring and making up stories in her head. She gifts little things she finds--rocks, leaves, worms--to the people she cares about, and has been lucky enough to have cousins who don't freak out when she picks up bugs. She is a half-blood by her Muggle-born father, but he was not the one to introduce any Muggle influences to Aislin's childhood, given he wasn't a part of it. Although more a child of the magical world than the non-magical one, the Darragh family has had half-bloods, Muggle-borns, and even the rare Muggle marry in for generations. They have not been pure-blooded in a very long time and so bits of Muggle culture and technologies have intertwined with the family's roots. She has also been influenced by Christine, a Muggle-born witch who continues to do a number of things the non-magical way. When she babysat Aislin or else had mother and daughter over for dinners, she would introduce Aislin to all sorts of Muggle things, like bands and current events and newspaper puzzles. Aislin still doesn't really know how to operate most electronics, but she would recognize them and understand the gist of their functions. The summer she was five years old was the first time Aislin could remember really noticing the sounds at night, croaks and chirps that she pestered her mom to tell her the sources of. All summer they were her companions, but eventually their noises slipped away with the changing seasons and she hated the quiet. After a while of turning over in her bed, the sounds of life returned all at once and she was able to drift off to sleep. Her mother discovered the change in noise specifically in her room when she checked on her before going to sleep herself and realized it for what it was. They celebrated it with a little cake the next day. Of course, Aislin was never able to recreate it, much to her disappointment. |

The maternal side of Aislin's family is witches and wizards, the occasional Muggle who married in, and a generations-old wand wood farm. Her grandad is the current torchbearer of the Darragh family wand-making business, which has always been quite a bit slower than the business of selling the wood to bigger wand-making names but is a sacred tradition nonetheless. He is a patient man, well-suited to the detailed craft of nurturing trees and carving their yield. As he ages, his hands have gotten shaky, which has yet to reach the limits of his patience but has forced him to gradually retire from his craft, preparing to pass the business on to his eldest daughter. She lives on the farm with her husband, one of the farm hands, and their three children. Aislin's nan is a shrewd witch who organizes much of the running of the farm and the coordination with core suppliers, all the social aspects her husband is not as skilled at. Aislin's mam is the middle child. Sylvia strayed from the family business of woods and plants, instead pursuing a talent for potions. Her potential was very nearly cut short by a pregnancy she was left to deal with alone, and it still was, to a degree. She rarely mentions Aislin’s father, his non-presence existing only in the gloominess that hangs around her when she is not careful enough to keep it tucked away. Sylvia is happy with what she has, mostly. She just didn’t see herself raising a kid alone, never advancing to a level of potion-making with any real experimentation. Sylvia's younger brother is a ranger these days, working shifts in parks, because the nature and magic of the family farm was a bit too orderly for him and his want to see the world. He fell for a Muggle with a knack for gardening that seemed almost magical, and in recent years he has secured a job that allows him to be in one place enough to raise a kid; now they have a five-year-old and three-year-old. Aislin has five cousins in total, two of which are already at Hogwarts: Daphne is a Gryffindor three years older and Orin is a Hufflepuff in the year above her. Her and her mam have two cats, Dipper and Pippin, and a frequent visitor in the form of Sylvia's best friend. Christine isn't family by blood, but she has been around enough to count in all other ways. They were roommates at Hogwarts and stuck close after that, Christine stepping in when Aislin's father bailed. Aislin's paternal side is all Muggles except for her dad, a Muggle-born wizard. His promises to stick around were ultimately broken when he caved under the pressure of deciding to live his life or cut off his family, and Aislin has never met him. Even when he decided he did not want his old life, he didn't go back to Sylvia and Aislin. He sought the stars instead, things far-off and unconcerned with his mess, and worked up to a position as an astronomy professor in a magical graduate program. |

Particularly effective for transfiguration, but a bit less for charms.ReducioThis wand belonged to Aislin's nan many years ago, seeing her through her school years and a career in duelling. With time, she switched her ambitions to business and felt the raw power of the wand did not suit her as well, and she had married a wandmaker, a man who might have been more excited to carve her a better match than to give her a ring. Neither the wood nor core were inclined to wilting in the absence of their original master, so the wand sat in storage for years, gathering dust, until it was time for Aislin to have a wand. She had a few choices, more limited than if they'd spent the money on a bigger wandmaker like Ollivander, and this one seemed most at home in her hands, though not a perfect match. She was not really a forceful person, certainly not powerful yet at eleven, but she also didn't blink at the core's darker reputation.
Aislin is unconvinced the wand actually likes her, since she's nowhere near the powerful witch her nan was and has it stuck doing such basic spells. She suspects it only chose her to get out of its box. When she's alone, Aislin talks to it, and when she's not, the conversation -- or bargaining -- continues on in her head.
