XXXAkari winced when Hikari coughed, covering his mouth. "The smoke is bad, huh?" he said. It was an extremely obvious statement, but talking kept Akari calm. He could only hope Hikari would stay calm, too. "Am I feeling better?" He repeated almost incredulously, only to remember the effects of the drink.

XXX"...oh. That. Yes, I am feeling much better." Akari felt like he should say something else, perhaps apologize for his behavior. The heat from the flames seemed incredibly close, and he could feel it searing his fingertips with a grimace. The smell of the smoke and the heat of the flames reminded him very strongly of Hogsmeade last year. That... incident... was not one he wished upon anyone. Was this a repeat of last year? Were congregations of students just natural targets? Akari thought his eyes might be starting to sting, whether from the fumes or emotion, he didn't know.

XXXAfter all of this, his love of fire might just start dwindling. He liked candles, sparklers, fireworks, and campfires, not wildfires. Was this fire even wild? Probably not. That one Hogwarts boy suddenly caught on fire, so... someone set him on fire? With Incendio? He wondered what person with malicious intent would be allowed into a school event.

XXXHikari seized him by the wrist, tugging him away and causing him to yelp. He used his other hand to transfer the grasp from his wrist to his hand, squeezing it comfortingly. It grounded him to reality. "We're going to be okay," he repeated under his breath, clinging to the mantra, because surely everything would turn out okay. Akari didn't know where or what was safe in this garden alight, or if there was anywhere still unexposed to the hungry flames.

XXX"Wait-" he started, glancing behind them. There were still many people in the garden. Some of them seemed to be handling it pretty well, while others were trying to run. They couldn't just leave them there. Did the professors know yet? Weren't there professors here earlier? He tried to squint through the smoke, covering his nose and mouth with his free hand. What could a bunch of children do against such a large outbreak of flames, anyway? From what he could see, there were a lot of first years and second years attending.

XXXThe flowery hedges around them were rapidly crumbling to ash, occasionally spitting sparks. However, the flames continued to blaze, rising higher. Akari gasped when the flames came dangerously close, the heat searing extremely close to them. For him, the sensation quickly faded away, thankfully not catching his clothes on fire. He tugged Hikari away, alarmed. The hazards were everywhere. "Are you... still okay?!" he asked anxiously, trying to assess him quickly.

With the smoke billowing heavily around her, Devon’s spell thankfully helped to put out a fire … and the combined efforts of the other students certainly helped. Reflexively, she moved her arm to her face, nearly stuffing the sleeve of her dress in her mouth to help stop her breathing in the smoke. Despite the slight gain from the utter chaos that now engulfed the garden, the scenes around her reminded her of pictures of war zones from years past in the history books she studied at her school in New York. Utter and complete chaos. Putrid smoke covered everything. She could only imagine how she looked, covered in soot and smelling like smoke. But there was no time for that now.

‘Run. Run like your life depends on it. You have to get out of there. Now!’

Her mind roared with warnings of the dire situation the young Horned Serpent found herself in. She could feel the muscles in her body already starting to amp up for her fight-or-flight response … all signs pointing to the flight portion. All she had to do was move … and yet … she was rooted to the spot. It was not from loyalty to this garden. As much as she loved flowers and gardens, this was also at Hogwarts. She had no idea what had happened, but figured that it had to have been something horrible.

And yet, Devon felt something bigger swell in her heart. It would have been so, so easy to sprint away from the destruction and horror in a bout of self-preservation, likely how many of the students who were in the garden were likely already doing. As this was outdoors, it wouldn’t take her long to return to the Ilvermorny camp set up in the Hogwarts campgrounds. She could easily rush over and take a nice, long, hot shower to help wash away the multiple slights against her.

No, no. That would not do at all. The swelling in Devon’s heart was that of a girl of action. She needed to do something … something to help. As a young no-maj from New York City, she rarely behaved in self-preservation. She had always been a girl who put others before her … even to her detriment. “Cursa!” She shouted, moving her arm slightly, so she could shout loudly. While she wasn’t best friends with the older Horned Serpent, she knew who he was and knew that she had to help.

Taking a step toward where she remembered Cursa to be with other students, Devon once again slowed to a stop. ‘Wait … Isadora … and … Matthew. Part of the reason I didn’t immediately notice the fire was because I was so upset that Matthew took Isadora away from me for a dance … a dance they likely didn’t get to enjoy too much. I know I’m upset about it, and the other slights from earlier, but that’d be horribly self-serving. Am I even friends with Isadora? I’d like to be … if she wants to be. I very much doubt I am with Matthew. I … I can’t focus on what happened. I need to help. I can’t focus on the past. I need to focus on now. I want to help. I’m confident Matthew wouldn’t let something happen to Isadora … yet, I want to be there. Frolicking fancies … I never should have walked away in dejection before. I can make up for lost time … I just need to find them and pray they are alright.’

Upon making her decision, Devon turned back in the direction she had walked before and started to run. Pointing her wand at a nearby flowerbush on fire, she waved her wand again. “Extinguo!” She shouted, hoping her efforts weren’t in vain, as she ran past the bush. She could feel the stomp of her sandals against the ground, still moving gracefully on her heels and around the throngs of evacuating students … not to mention the ever-present smoke. ‘My feet are going to ache tomorrow. Thank God, I’ll return to wearing my favorite flat sandals. Yet, I don’t have time to worry about that now. That’ll be tomorrow’s issue.’ Taking in a deep breath from behind her sleeve, she moved her arm a bit again. “Isadora! Matthew!” She shouted loudly, hoping the pair would hear her. She ran in their assumed direction, hoping to find them. With every hurried step, she could feel her heart thumping wildly in her chest.

Traces of residual feelings were stewing internally in the Haitian woman following the events of the last ball Hogwarts had hosted, something that Sarai had attempted to conceal behind a calm exterior and the busywork surrounding the ball.

A part of her longed to have her husband out there supporting her, but Fabian's affairs with Ilvermorny and the purchase of their secondary residence on account of the baby would keep the man busy in the privacy of her office space. He was joined by their other son, Briar, who made an effort to seclude himself from the side of his elder brother, Alphonse. Both Briar and Fabian shared Sarai's sentiments regarding the terrorist attack in Hogsmeade—having little desire to be back at Hogwarts, but would return simply to be together as a family.

She didn't have qualms about their absences tonight—solitude being a rather present facet in their imperfect family—and went about her business, doting on Alphonse and Isadora for the ball. There was a part of the Toussaint woman who was relieved to have two fewer people to worry about, but hoped they could all share more family time before they all departed once more. She let out an anguished sigh as Sarai lingered on a perch of sorts, patting her dress pocket where a small tube of burn and bruise cream remained, carried only because of the fear of chaos ensuing once again while the students enjoyed the evening. Whether it was her beastly son, Alphonse, getting into scraps with the populace or gods knew what other haywire, the woman was prepared.

To much of the Haitian woman's dismay, Alphonse didn't run off to socialize with his friends or locate some lucky (or foolish) girl to share the evening with right away.

Since February, her eldest had acted rather strangely yet more distinguished, though the Hebologist was rather ignorant as to why—the newly revealed pregnancy, the new school, or him getting drugged with amortentia, she had not a clue. Of course, the woman would learn of the little prank on the students at Beaubaxtons after it all unfolded—her own son being the main victim, but as far as Sarai knew, no lasting harm had been done and effects remedied, and yet Alphonse seemingly left that school somewhat different. Happier, perhaps?

Trying to make small talk to pass the time, her eldest son wouldn't give Sarai much insight into the innerworkings of his pubescent mind, yet it all seemed to fall into place when her gunmetal blue gaze followed Alphonse's to the entrance of the garden.

A girl. Of course.

This girl appeared much more of a classy, tasteful lady than the ones her son had formerly been acquainted with in a dating sense. The strict mother inside her approved of the debutante as far as appearances were concerned, but offered no outward signal or commentary and would dig into the matter later. Watching Alphonse depart from her side, Sarai remained in place and watched as the events unfolded and internally prayed for a calm and boring evening.

The peace was short-lived. It always was at Hogwarts.

Hedgerows and sculpted greenery would obstruct her vision, but the scent would locate her. Burning and smoke. A shiver travelled down her spine as the woman recalled the very smell in Hogsmeade, but the chill wasn't because of the fire. It was because the woman had not a clue of where her beloved kin had gone. "Nonono," she cursed under her breath, tears pricking at the corner of her eyelids, and immediately gathered her dress to run into the fray.

Casting 'Extinguo' left and right as the woman searched desperately through the throngs of evacuating students and smoke, Sarai held her pregnant stomach as if it would protect the twins under her flesh or prevent her from hurling up her dinner from breathing in the fumes.

“Isadora! Matthew!” another voice [Devon] had called, and Sarai perked up and located the source first, gently but frantically assessing the young blonde girl's arms and exterior for burns, "You. Are you hurt? Do you know where my son and niece are? Isadora? Alphonse?"

Without waiting for a response, the Toussaint woman called out "ISA! ALPHONSE?" in a panicked breath.

Flames seemed to have abrupted around the Garden. The smell of charred flowers wafted through the garden profusely. Isadora felt her nose burning and the scent of fire burned her throat. Her sense of smell was a tad stronger with the full moon around the corner. Gripping her wand tightly while pulling her bandana roughly off the top of her head the girl tried to use it to cover her nose and mouth. Her crystal blue eyes stung from the ash that seemed to be dusting the once beautiful garden.

Trying to steer herself to calm the girl was focused on trying to help extinguish the flames. Her attempt to try and help protect those innocent in the matter.

With the flame quickly surrounding the garden and the boy that seemed to be trying to protect Isadora profusely. The young girl felt her stomach drop everything was happening quickly she had no idea what to do one moment Matthew was just protecting the girl from the flames the next moment the girl could see the flames eating away at his outfit. The mushroom hat that adorned his head had caught fire along with the beige tan puffy sleeves of his shirt.

Hands began to tremble, heart pounding in her ears. Isadora felt as if her curse was happening once again.

The girl stared at Matthew for a second before snapping out of it quickly. No it was not the time to panic or feel guilty the boy was protecting her he got caught in the crossfire. Isadora pointed her wand at Matthew, her nerves calming quickly as she stared at the boy.

“EXTINGUO.”

The young girl shouted quickly. Her mind cleared as she stared at the boy in flames. Her main concern was putting out the fire. No time for pity. No time to be scared. No time to feel like a monster. No right now she had to help. She had to be useful. She had to do everything possible to save Matthew. The boy was her friend, someone who seemed to understand her slightly. Someone who she vowed to save at whatever cost it took even if the girl had to jump into the flames herself. Anything to make sure Matthew made it out alive. Maybe burned badly, but the girl would not be concerned about that at the moment, she was more concerned about saving the boy engulfed in flames.

As if the spell seemed to understand her intentions the fire extinguishing charm seemed to hit Matthew head on helping the flames die down quickly. As the flames that were once alive and eating away at the boy seemed to diminish. Isadora lowered her wand rushing over towards Matthew. Her mind was a blur but she calmed down quickly as she gazed at the golden speckled hazel eyes.

“Matthew! We mus’ leave it’s to dangerous with the flames.”

Isadora spoke softly as she stood near the boy ready to help him if he needed help walking. The boy after all was not in the best condition though it was no wonder the flames happened quickly like a wild fire. Unfortunately for them the wild fire was still enraging around them.

With the heat of the flames and the smoke Isadora felt her chest tight the smell making the girl grow nauseous but this was not the time right now she had to try and look for help or anyone who could be useful.

“Isadora! Matthew!”

Devon?

Isadora frantically looked around her curly hair bouncing quickly around her as the flowers that were once on her head laid on the ground disheveled a few in flames. The smoke was blinding. The girl felt her heart clinched. Devon?! She was still here? The flames were too much, the smoke was blinding but the girl was not sure what to do. Glancing over at Matthew who was no longer on fire thanks to Isadora’s extinguio the girl felt her heart clinch more.

If Devon came near them she could easily get hurt by the flames as the fire was still ensuing around them. As if by an unknown force was angry and took it out on the children. No, no, no. Isadora could not think about that at the moment her concern was Matthew. She had to find a way to get out of this with him. The flames could all perish if the girl had the ability she would do it. If she could only be useful.

Isadora gripped her wand tightly, shaking her head glancing once more at Matthew. No time to panic or be terrified out of her mind. Isadora had to try and call for Devon if Isadora had help she could get Matthew help.

“ISA! ALPHONSE!”

Her heart dropped. Isadora could hear the panic in her Tanties voice yet so close but far away. Yet the key to helping Matthew.

Isadora felt her feet start to move towards her tanties voice but before she could move the girl stopped. She could not leave Matthew. The girl stayed close to the boy. Before glancing over her shoulders. The smoke was thick. The ash covered the grounds while the girl could tell her skin was dusted with ash. The edge of her dress was slightly charred with ash covering the hem of the dress. Quickly Isadora took a sharp inhale of breath feeling the ashy air burn her lungs.

“DEVON!! TANTIE!!”

The young girl shouted loudly, her voice trembling. Her throat seemed to burn as if she was not used to speaking loudly. But she had no time to fret or panic because she had a job to do. Her main goal was to get to safety with Matthew, Devon and her Tantie.

Isadora stared ahead her crystal blue eyes held determination as she watched in anticipation awaiting with baited breath. Her heart was thundering in her ears. Just another normal day at Hogwarts the girl thought bitterly to herself.

Genie whipped her head around at the mention of her name and smiled excitedly, but still with an air of politeness to her face to avoid being looked upon as crazy. But there he was, her handsome prince come to whisk her away for a night of passionate dancing, a humerous catch up, and the evervescent feeling of belonging with someone that she had been mourning since their last parting.

Oh how she'd missed him.

Alphonse Toussaint stood before her, in a crisp vanilla colored suit that did his complexion wonders, with his hand out stretched and the invitation of a dance musing from his lips so as to invite her into the thrall of the evening she had so desperartely waited for in her hope of returning to the sweet feeling of being adored.

With a graceful hand extension, her gloved hand found his and she was reminded of how strong the young man before her was. But she felt nothing but comfort as their hands joined together. It was familiarity and if she could smile wider she would.

"Hello Alphonse." She spoke in her airy tone with the lilt of shyness to her voice as she accepted his invitation to dance.

However, their dance would have to wait it seemed as suddenly, a flicker of familiar colors reflected across the backside of Alphonse's jacket and her face contorted in fear. A fire had erupted from somewhere and was in the midst of destroying all that lay within it's path. The fear of the other students and faculty was immesurable as the screams and cries of those affected, combined with the shouting of spells to try and quell the smoke and furious flames that threatened to devour the night.

A whimper escaped her and she could feel the heated edge of the flames creeping towards them as they continued to destroy what remained. The smoke in her eyes was fortuitous for the circumstance and thankfully not the flames but if she and Alphonse remained much longer, she feared they too would be consumed.

A cry of Alphonse's name had her head craning to find the voice that had called for both the boy in front of her and the name of another she did not recognize. As the smoke grew higher and the terror filled air came to the highest it had been in the moment, she grasped Alphonse's arm tightly, afraid for what may happen to the two of them.

Tonight was supposed to be a magical night in a garden of eden. But here she was, afraid that it would end prematurely because of the destructive forces of fire. How was it that she could not have one night of peace with this boy of whom she desired protection by while the horribliness of the chaos continued to devote itself to ruining her time with Alphonse.

She buried her head in his arms, still greatly afraid for what might happen.

"Alphonse I'm afraid- Please- What's happening?!" Her frightened voice broke out admist the panic and confusion of those around her.

Taking in the stunning details of her gown, a permanent smile that mirrored her own had glued itself onto the face of the boy as Alphonse took her hand in his. Giving her gloved hand a gentle squeeze, Alphonse stooped down to offer her knuckles a polite peck before preparing to lead her to the dancefloor to the awaiting dance that the Toussaint boy promised her.

"I was worried you had changed your mind about coming," he admitted quietly, taking a breath to quell the words that nearly tumbled from his mouth, calm the racing thoughts, and steady his thrumming heart. It was without a doubt that Alphonse had missed the Beaubaxtons Duellist, but the Toussaint progeny did not wish to be unkind or impolite by admitting it; the frequent letters exchanged only sufficed to ease some of the ache.

His brown gaze met hers with a sheepish smile that faded upon watching Geneviève's face contort in horror. Alphonse whipped around upon hearing the shrieks of patrons fleeing as a fiery blaze devoured all in its path, and the thick smoke and embers that stained the sky above.

Not again.

Geneviève's frightened whimper was barely audible over the clamor of the garden's guests, and his arms held her close instinctively to shield her with his own body. He gently but urgently began to lead her towards the exit of the garden, but a familiar gargling shout caught his attention and halted the Toussaint progeny in his tracks. His mother's voice rose above the chaos, and Alphonse's heart sank. Glancing down at Geneviève, the boy shattered even more—a sense of responsibility to protect and deep-seated guilt for inviting her in the first place, but his pregnant mother's cries lulled the boy into choosing between the two.

"That's my mother, she's looking for my cousin and I," Alphonse spoke, withdrawing his protective arm that clung around her waist and hastily pulling off his suit's coat, quickly draping it over Geneviève's shoulders to safeguard her from breathing in the fumes or ruining her gown from the floating embers, "She's pregnant..I need to go make sure she's okay."

His hand trembled as he gently grabbed her arm as memories returned after his mother nearly died once months prior, and loathed the very thought of not being by Genie's side. Alphonse's voice was apologetic but urgently spoken; "My mom's greenhouses are that way—" he pointed in the direction still untouched by flames, where they could regroup if Geneviève desired to flee towards safety or wanted anything to do with him at all, "—I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."

He prayed that Geneviève would listen and leave this place to go somewhere safe, but his mind rushed too fast for him to focus on whether she would object or anything that she might say or do next. Relinquishing his careful grip on her arm, Alphonse moved his hand to caress the side of her cheek with the gentlest of his touches and leaned down to give Geneviève's forehead a soft kiss. "I'll find you," he promised before turning tail into the inferno.

"Ma?! Isa!" Alphonse called out, covering his mouth and nose from breathing in the smoke.

Akari, because he was Akari- sweet, and frustratingly kind even in the middle of chaos., tugged him back, looking around at all the people still in the garden. Hikari took in the ssituation himself; most of the students seemed to have scattered, hurried footsteps echoing through the smoke, but a select few had stayed behind. They were still doing damage control, casting variations of Extinguishing Charms and Water-producing spells with practiced ease. Their incantations were sharper, and the effects of the spells were more efficient, compared to the basic extinguo he and Akari had been using.

Hikari watched, tense, quiet, grip tightening rather painfully o his wand. He badly wanted to help and yet... So many of us don't know anything beyond Extinguo, he thought bitterly. We should be taught some of the better versions in the younger classes. What's the point of leaving the harder spells for the upper years if the younger ones burn before they get there?

Still, it was not the correct time to ponder about the flaws in the education system. The flames wouldn't stop for curriculum gaps.

Hikari flinched as heat licked up his side, sharp and too close. Akari yanked him backwards, just in time. His sleeve had nearly caught fire. He patted the fabric, heart thudding painfully. No burn, no damage, just the heat to remind him of how dangerously close he's come.

If Akari hadn't been there...

"Thank you." he muttered, voice clipped, shakier than he would've liked it to be. He turned to Akari, grip tightening over his arm, "We don't know any spells that will be effective enough to help control this." he said, keeping his voice level with effort. The heat was starting to hurt his head. "Neither do we know any teachers here. It would be better if we get ourselves out of danger before one of us gets hurt and someone needs to clean up after us."

This time, he didn't wait for permission. He tugged his friend through the chaos and into the main school building, away from the smoke, away from the heat, away from the danger.

Casey could feel the veins in his forehead thicken as the fires surrounding the Garden slowly began to spread out of control. To say he was getting anxious for the predicament at hand was underselling it. Thankfully, he noticed a few partygoers heeding his call and making their way to the exit. He could hear the cacophony of incantations and spells being casted from behind him, noticing Colin, Emily and a few other faces doing all they can to put out the fires that were devouring the venue at an accelerating rate.

He side-stepped out of the way before the flames devouring the bushes nearby could lick at his ankles, ducking underneath past a crumbling arch that was being charcoaled to death by flames that had engulfed it and the poor flowers that were coiled around it.

"Christ... Oi!" He called back to the spellcasters trying to extinguish the flames. "You might wanna hurry up! Otherwise we're all gonna turn into over fried chicken wings--"

He was interrupted when a stray flame caught the cuff of his shirt, chewing through the fabric until it turned into ash. Within seconds it made contact with the skin on his wrist and with it came the pain and stench of searing flesh.

"Ah shit--!"

He patted the flame out quickly, his fingers joining in of the agony of making contact with the heat. With the flames extinguished by his palm, he clutched his burnt wrist and forearm. He trembled from the pain, grimacing as he desperately tried to will the pain out of his body. Another expletive died at the end of his tongue as the pain numbed him.

Casey gritted his teeth before eventually spitting out, "Ngh! That's it-- I'm never coming to this shittin' school for anythin' ever again... At this rate, this place'll kill me sooner than Ilvermorny ever will--!"

"OWOOOOOOOOOOO!!!"

The anger that had risen in Colin's heart just a moment before was now replaced by excitement! The sudden thrill of fighting against a terrible enemy enflamed Colin's heart and made him bold! "EMMI! Isn't this grand?" Colin kept jabbing his wand at the fires and putting them out. "I mean! It's not hag dolls, but --- hey! Did you hear that, Emmi? That's Professor Toussaint casting extinguishing spells!"

Colin didn't even care about the burns he'd suffered. A quick look at his arms and chest revealed no skin sloughing off or charred bones or anything. That was a bonus! Even with all their efforts, the fire was just too much for them to contain! Even so, Colin roared at the flames under the nearly full Moon!

His heart raced as he made to leap closer and attack the fire! He felt his hand separate from Emily's! What!? Someone's arms were around his chest! His nostrils flared, filled with the scent of fire and charred flesh! Of smoke and raw heat! His ears were filled with the cries of other kids running away! Colin didn't run away! "Must protect --- Eyes of Sky!" he growled to himself.

Strong arms grabbed him around his bare chest. Hands locked around him. Half mad, he looked towards AngelFyre, and then towards Emily! Casey was yelling; Simon was casting spells. He heard a voice shouting in his ear. Twas Cursa! Calling for Emily's and AngelFyre's help! He struggled against Cursa. He wanted to fight! That's what you did against enemies like fire! He tried to kick at Cursa's legs! He tried to wriggle out of his cousin's grasp! "Gerroff me Cursa! You're not helping!"

I swear, Case!," Cursa muttered, looking for a new fire to put out; "I'm with you! I'm never coming back to this bat shit school ever again! Why do they have to set everything on fire here?" He heard his housemate, Devon, call out his name as well as that of the cute girl from the flower braiding table. Isadora. He hoped they were both okay! ""M okay Dev! Strong work sis, but make sure you can escape!" he called back.

"The fires aren't dying down!"

And then --- of course --- Colin just had to start howling. What was with that boy!? His cousin had a mad look in his eyes. It seemed like he was about ready to charge the fires of hell itself! He looked towards Emily, hoping she would, no, hoping she could drag him away. "Colin! Casey's right! This is too much for us!" He shot a pleading look towards AngelFyre and the older boy, Simon.

Colin started firing off more spells into the fire. "Fuck me," he muttered. "Must be something in Hogwarts's water that drives him crazy! Emily! Help me!" Cursa jumped after Colin, wrapping his arms around his cousin's chest. He was so skinny. Surely he'd light up like a twig if he got any closer to the fire! "No Colin! This is too much for us! You said yourself there's teachers here. Let them handle it!"

Colin was strong for all he was wiry. Maybe too much for Cursa alone! He needed help if his idiot cousin wasn't going to die right here in front of him! His mind flashed back to Hogsmeade suddenly. It was Colin, then, who leapt into the fray; just as he was doing now! He was half wild, though, and needed taming! He wondered if Emily was up to that task, as he tried to manhandle his cousin away from the fire!
Open to interactions! Especially if you're a girl! :wow:
