When Enoria came into his office that Saturday morning for her detention, Avery was diligently working on a very grumpy portrait of a stiff man in a bowler hat. The caretaker was bent over the portrait's frame, which had cracked entirely up one side and split in two after some students bumped it and it fell down on the bottom corner. Although he had cast a reparo to fix it, it hadn't quite come together right because some of the pieces were missing, which seemed to be a common theme among the school's art. They probably took a tumble down the stairs and he'd never find them, so he had to fill in the holes and the man in the frame was rather indignant about it. Thankfully, he was just finished as the girl came in.
"Hello, Miss Kabukimono!" He said, way to chipper for this early on a Saturday morning as he set down his work, assured the painting that he would be back once it was cured, and stepped over to the young student. "Welcome. I have two simple tasks for you to do today and the faster you get them done, the faster you can be on your way."
He walked over to his desk, which had been cleared but for one sheet of paper and a pen, and pulled the simple chair up to the desk, gesturing for her to sit.
"Firstly, I would like you to fill out this form detailing what you are in trouble for. You must write at least two thoughtful sentences per question and once you are done and I will look it over let you know if it is satisfactory." He said brightly. "Afterwards, we will move on to the second part of your detention, which will be a nice run, at your pace, from the Entrance Hall door to the Hogsmeade bridge and back twice. Once that is completed, you will be free to go. Does that sound like a plan?"
Detention Rules and Expectations
1. You will need to post one post for each part:

A Run to Remember
Saturday, June 14, 2025English - Thoughts@Avery Phineas FinchCaretaker's Office
XXXIt was official: Eonaria was never, ever, ever going back to Hogsmeade.
XXXIt was the kind of promise that you made and then completely forgot about until you did it again.
XXXWhile many students would have complained about waking up early on a Saturday morning, Eonaria didn't mind. She woke up at pretty much the same time every day, around 7. Of course, she could go back to sleep until 7:30, but the detention she had been assigned was absolutely terrifying and had been weighing on her mind all night. She had never gotten detention before...! She got out of bed even earlier than usual and started walking in frantic circles in the bathroom and occasionally jumping around with terrified hand flapping.
XXXShe was probably overreacting.
XXXAm I supposed to bring something?! After freaking out for another five minutes, Eonaria finally just took her entire bookbag like she was going to class. By the time she approached the caretaker's office door, her heart was thumping like she was attempting Muggle extreme sports. Not that she ever would. And detention definitely didn't seem anything like extreme sports.
XXXWhen Eonaria opened the door the bare minimum for her to slip in, she found the caretaker standing beside one of the many, many paintings of the castle. It featured a rather grumpy man. Are we doing art, or something? Portrait restoration? A flicker of hope went through her. An art project would be the best detention ever!! Then the caretaker gave out the instructions, and Eonaria instantly deflated. Forms? Not bad at all.
XXXRUNNING?! Now, if it was a race, Eonaria could do that. Sure. She was good at sprinting. But the distance from the Entrance Hall to Hogsmeade's bridge?!
XXXShe was so going to die. "Okay," she squeaked, sitting down in the offered chair. Just a few questions... Then her gaze fell on the writing instrument beside the paper. Eonaria regarded it for a moment, puzzled. She picked it up, rotating it a couple of times. Um... how does this work...? After a couple moments of utter confusion, she finally set it down on the paper and started writing.XXXEonaria spent a lot of time just staring at the questions, trying to think harder. What did he mean, list ways to avoid the problem? How is that something you avoid? It's just something you turn away from and harness willpower for, right? Eonaria wasn't even sure if all of her answers were valid. Some rambling might have snuck its way into there, too. But she finally finished the form, setting the Muggle writing instrument down and awkwardly looking up at the caretaker.FILE OF CONSEQUENCES FORM
1: I broke the Hogwarts rules by [describe your action].I forged a permission slip and snuck into Hogsmeade as a first year. First years are not allowed into Hogsmeade.2: What caused the problem? (why did you do it)I don't have a real reason, but I just wanted a break from Hogwarts for a bit... It's not like I was drinking butterbeer or anything! I guess there wasn't really a problem? Impulsivity? Boredom? Stupidity?3: List 3 good reasons why you should not do this thing in the future. Frame the best one.(1) I don't want to get detention again (2) Hogsmeade is... kind of boring the more you go back... (3) I could use my time more productively?4: List 3 good ways to avoid this problem in the future. Frame the best one.(1) I don't really know how to avoid this, but maybe I could just focus on other activities like art to keep myself from getting bored and wandering off to places I shouldn't be (2) I guess I should just not look at Hogsmeade? If I see it, turn away? (3) I mean, you already took my fake permission slip, so it's not like I can go there anyway... Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes is a pretty weird shop with lots of noises and colors and weird smells, so I should just make sure not to go near that shop whenever I next go to Diagon Alley so I don't get tempted to buy another permission slip? I can't get into Hogsmeade without a permission slip, after all! (How come Hogwarts has never sued Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes for selling forgeries of official permission slips?)

As Eonaria settled into the chair and picked up the pin with confusion, it occurred to Avery that a pen might be weird to some students. He had, admittedly, forgotten that part of school. He had happily gone back to mostly muggledom and hadn't touched a quill since his 1st year anyway. Pens and pencils were significantly more practical. The moment he realized that he should maybe explain that it was another kind of writing utensil, the girl figured it out and got to work. He would explain to the inevitable next student.
When she seemed to be done later, putting the pen down on the table, he came over from working on other portraits to read the paper, not bothering to hide his amusement at some of her answers.
"This is good. Well done. Don't ever call yourself stupid though. I think you will find that you are highly intelligent enough to figure out things to do that don't involve breaking the rules." Avery said with a smile to the young girl. He duplicated the form, put one in the top drawer of his filing cabinet, and handed the second one to Eonaria. "You can put this in your bag and leave it here while we go on our run and once we're finished, you can come back here for your things. I always keep the door locked and safety charmed when I'm out, so your things will be safe here." He walked over to the open door and opened it wider, bowing with a flourish to guide her out the door. "Onwards!"

XXXEonaria waited nervously as the caretaker looked over her form, half expecting him to hand it back and make her revise her answers to the last two questions. I wonder if he's going to answer that last question? It really is something Hogwarts should consider doing. It's an extremely exploitable breach in security. To her relief, he simply duplicated it and put one in his cabinet and gave the other to her instead, though he looked quite amused when he read her writing. Eonaria nodded awkwardly, folded the copy, tucked it inside the cover of one of her textbooks, and placed her bookbag down by the door. She wasn't really sure if she was being complimented or reprimanded-- maybe both.
XXXEonaria hurried down the stairs in her usual manner, which translated to something along the lines of trying to get somewhere without wasting any time while also trying to not look too undignified, which, well... it could just be described as 'scurrying.' Like a squirrel. Kind of like skipping down the steps, but not in the sense of frolicking? Eonaria still wasn't very proficient at traversing stairs properly. It was only after making it halfway down to the ground floor that she realized what she was doing, and then desperately hoped that it didn't look terrible from the back. Why was she obsessing over the way one could walk down stairs??!
XXXIt took a bit of effort to push open one of the large doors of the entrance hall. Once Eonaria slipped out, she held the door open for Mr.... er... what was his name again?
XXXHogwarts had too many people.
XXXThe morning sunshine helped her calm down somewhat, as she was absolutely not looking forward to this run. After looking around between the Hogsmeade bridge and the caretaker for a moment, wondering when to start, Eonaria finally started jogging after an unnecessarily long pause. She nearly did a double-take when the caretaker started jogging as well. HOLY MERLIN, he's running with me?! Eonaria made a horrible kind of choking-squeaking sound involuntarily. He had said 'at your pace,' but in order for her to not to complete flop over halfway through, she would have to reduce her speed to a slow jog. The caretaker looked like someone who ran laps around the lake for fun. Should I run faster?! I mean, I'll probably make it! Probably being the key word...! She sped up slightly, keeping her eyes on the destination-- Or the, ah, 1/4 mark... THAT'S SO LONG!? Well, it wasn't that long... ish... Also, Eonaria had no idea what the proper technique for running was.
XXXSince her main problem with long-distance was the fact that her chest would start burning, she assumed it was a lack of oxygen intake. Which was weird, because she was a singer. I have good breath support, why can't I run well?? To her extreme dismay, by the time she reached the bridge and turned back, the distance looked even longer and her legs were starting to ache. Eonaria tried to inhale as deep as she could, which was probably bad, because now it felt like she was about to explode. Hadn't she read something about exertion and air pressure and... something? No wait, that was about being underwater. Nevertheless, Eonaria kept going.
XXXBy the time she was approaching Hogwarts again, her legs felt like stumbling to a stop. Which was what she ended up doing. Not yet! Her mind screeched. Eonaria took a desperate three seconds to breathe, attempting not to stoop over like an old lady, before resuming the jog, which had now indeed slowed from what she tried to do. I'm not ready! Her brain wailed in response. The caretaker didn't say anything about not taking breaks! She was very thankful that there weren't really people around on a Saturday morning. The only thing that could possibly make this worse was an audience and... a longer distance. Yikes.
XXXHalfway to the bridge again, Eonaria felt it: the dreaded acid. Okay, it wasn't acid. Not even close. It wasn't even stomach bile. But it felt like it!! I mean, not like stomach bile. That's a whole different feeling. This was like some kind of corrosive gas was crawling up the back of her throat. But less dramatically. It wasn't actually hurting her, it just felt like it was hurting her.
XXX"Can we...?" she started before cutting off her sentence in favor of a tight-lipped 'mm' sound. No air to waste! You can lay down after!
XXXThe problem with breathing deeply was that she ended up not being able to exhale fast enough, which resulted in more oxygen circulation problems. Once her feet touched the stone of the bridge, Eonaria turned around again, internally lamenting the sight of Hogwarts so far away again. It probably showed on her face. Oh, who was she kidding? It absolutely showed on her face, probably a long time ago. Hogsmeade is not at all worth this tormeeeeent!! A little dramatic, sure. Necessary? Absolutely.
XXXAt last, her last vestiges of willpower ran out and Eonaria stumbled to a stop, still a few meters away from the doors of Hogwarts. She completed the final stretch in a sad-looking, feet-dragging walk, leaning against the wall while she gulped down as much air as possible. Eonaria didn't think she'd be running today, so she neglected to bring water. Of course. The one day. The one and only day I do strenuous exercise, it's the one I forget water on!! Her mouth felt about as dry as sleeping with your mouth open, which was to say, the horrible scrape-y kind where you needed to manually remoisten your mouth. To be honest, Eonaria thought they'd be cleaning or something.
XXX"Um..." she wheezed, looking at the caretaker, who looked like he'd just gone on a mild stroll through Diagon Alley. WHAT. She was about to open the door again and go back inside, only to remember the journey back.
XXXThe stairs.
XXXEonaria sat down right there on the grass with a sound akin to a sob. She didn't even care that her robes might be getting weird, damp, green stains on them. She could get her stuff later. Perhaps tomorrow. But what was the alternative? Go back to her common room?? MORE STAIRS. "Can I just stay here and wallow in misery?" She asked in the most sincere, polite tone she could muster up. The annoying acid feeling was still floating about to which she tried to swallow some saliva aggressively. It did not work. Eonaria could go drink water in the Great Hall, for breakfast. That sounded great. Water for breakfast.

The acid gas thing is basically what I feel when I run too much, sooo... that's that... if it sounds too dubious...

Avery jogged along with the girl, keeping her pace as promised, completely unbothered by how fast or slow she decided to go, and was admittedly amused as she wrestled with the task. He definitely admired and was a bit proud of the moments where she obviously wanted to quit, but pressed on. He had a feeling that his plan had worked enough to at least make her think twice about going before she was allowed, at worst case she would be more sneaky about it than being one of the last students there.
He was also glad that he'd judged her stamina well. There was no way she could have made it another lap, but this had at least burned enough to be a memorable struggle.
Taking pity on the girl as she realized the stairs she would have to climb to truely finish her task, Avery produced two plastic bottles of water from seemingly out of no where, opened one and offered it to her, then opened the other and drank from it.
"You can wallow as long as you need before we climb those stairs. I know it's a bunch." He said with a small chuckle at her question. He knew. He climbed them every day.
When she did finally get up and head inside, there was more water waiting on Avery's desk and he bid her goodbye with a chipper, "Good job, Eonaria!"

XXXEonaria was a little surprised when the caretaker actually took her complaint seriously, replying that she could wallow as long as she needed. "Oh," she said, taking the bottle of water with a puzzled expression. "Thank you." Eonaria waved goodbye as he left, a little bemused at how happy he seemed.
XXXSo that was detention, huh... I guess the experience is worse while it's happening than the aftermath. She unscrewed the cap of the water bottle, startled as the tiny tabs of plastic holding it on snapped. She hadn't seen one of these in a long time. The water tasted so good. Well, not good, but extremely helpful to her parched state. The texture of the water bottle was surprisingly crunchy as it began to empty out. When Eonaria lowered it again, she could feel the water in her body from drinking it so fast. That was... weird, to say the least. She twisted the bottle slowly, fascinated at the sound it made. She was definitely keeping this thing. Does water fall under Gamp's Law of whatever-it-was?
XXXEonaria sat in the grass for about ten more minutes, just appreciating air. Good, fresh air that wasn't being used up the second it entered her body. The sun was rising higher in the sky, indicating that the temperature would soon rise. That was not something she wanted to deal with as summer approached. She was glad there weren't classes tomorrow-- if she had to traverse those accursed staircases with the inevitable ache in her legs, she might just skip class entirely.
XXXOn second thought, that would probably land her more detention. And you know what's worse than running to the Hogsmeade bridge and back twice? Starting it with your muscles already on fire. Time to go take a nap! Eonaria dragged herself to her feet with a longsuffering sigh, opening the door to the entrance hall. This time, she could actually go as slow as she wanted. Perhaps three stairs a minute. No, that wasn't time efficient at all. Ten stairs a minute? All the way back to the caretaker's office... Eonaria wondered if he'd be there when she grabbed her belongings. Ooh, I can crunch this bottle on my way up...
