EPIC The Musical utilizes something in its songs known as motifs - essentially musical ideas that show up multiple times in a piece (or in this case, the whole musical!). The creator, Jorge Rivera-Herrans, actually used musical motifs to represent the characters and events throughout the musical, which I thought was really cool! He actually mentioned that he was inspired by Peter and The Wolf, which also utilizes these motifs. For those of you who aren't familiar with Peter and The Wolf, it's a famous classical composition by composer Sergei Prokofiev from 1936 but I digress. Just uh.. you know that strings ringtone that you've probably heard before but you never knew what it was.... yeah that one!! mhm. (to people and fellow musicians out there who know what i'm talking about i'm so sorry..
)
Now Jorge, inspired by Peter and The Wolf, has intricate motifs for all the characters in EPIC the Musical as well as some of the events, which i'll explain in detail later. Each character is represented by a set of instruments playing a specific melody/rhythm that also shows up very very specifically in other songs or later in that particular song.
Let's take a look at Athena, who easily has one of the most recognizable motifs in the song 'Warrior of The Mind' and later on in the musical - what is known to the fandom as 'Quick Thought'! Whenever she shows up in any of the songs, there's always an acceleration in the music, the same melody - which represents her power (because jorge was also inspired by video game boss battles)
If you listen carefully to the instrumentals, you'll notice this! ^

totally understand the need to procrastinate though. How would you feel about listening to The Horse and The Infant /while/ studying for finals, then writing about your reaction o.O or doing some art?
