If she had to be honest, Kaitlyn was a bit apprehensive. Well, technically, she was always nervous. Last year, she was far more nervous than currently. She could barely talk to anyone then … stuttering a lot. It was a wonder anyone actually understood her … or more likely, that they felt sorry for her. How many of her classmates took pity on her, anyway? That was likely a fact she didn’t wish to know about.
To be fair, Kaitlyn’s shyness had improved over the summer. She was still shy, but could at least talk now. That was an improvement in her mind! But her current apprehension extended more than that. Recently, she wasn’t talking too much to her classmates … or really anyone her age. Most of her conversations had been with first years. While she didn’t care much about that, this gathering made her realize she should take the time to build better connections with the girls and boys in her year, too. They’d keep seeing each other in classes, after all.
Melting into Brook’s hug, Kaitlyn returned it was a light squeeze. She liked hugs, but routinely stopped from throwing herself at everyone she wanted to hug. It was incredibly unlikely everyone she met would want to hug her … even with her favorite tulip perfume! “You’re welcome. I’m glad to be here to celebrate you. Thirteen is an important milestone!” She exclaimed.
At Sage’s greeting, Kaitlyn beamed at the Hufflepuff girl. She kind of wanted to give an update to her. As her memory served her, Sage tried helping her with Transfiguration last year. Her failures then were likely due to being completely new to magic. With the slight ebbing of her shyness, she felt more in control of her magic. Plus, she was casting Transfiguration spells better now. But it felt completely inappropriate to mention at Brook’s birthday celebration. This wasn’t about her … it was about Brook. She kept it to herself for now.
“It’s nice to see you outside of class,” Kaitlyn replied to Sage. Was she still as polite as always? Of course. Just because she reduced her expectations of politeness from the other students didn’t mean she would suddenly abandon it now. Of course not. She had her ways about her. A smile formed on her lips at Andy’s greeting, and she shook his hand with a firm handshake. That was one of her etiquette lessons from St. Ann’s All-Girls’ Catholic Boarding School. “It is a pleasure to meet you, too, Andy,” she replied, her quiet politeness clearly expressed.
When Brook addressed their gathering with thoughts about the lack of party games, Kaitlyn politely stood back at first when cupcakes were offered to everyone … letting Andy and Sage go before her. Her delicate fingers wrapped around one of the cupcakes that were offered, balancing it in her hand like it was to be treasured. She nodded at the sentiments Andy and Sage shared. It sounded pretty similar to her own.
“I completely agree. It’s your birthday, Sage. You should get to enjoy these delicious delicacies first,” Kaitlyn continued. A sparkle formed in her blue eyes at the mention of staring at clouds, provided by Andy. “And I agree with Andy … we are here to celebrate you and to show that we care about you, Brook. I, for one, don’t mind what we do, as long as it’s something you’ll enjoy,” she stated her intentions. She wasn’t one to force others to apply to her mold. That wasn’t fair to them, and certainly wouldn’t be encompassing of everyone’s feelings. Frankly, Brook’s feelings were at the top of the list currently, as it was her birthday.
“I must admit, I enjoy watching the clouds … I have a journal with a lot of my thoughts from looking at the shapes the wisps form above us,” Kaitlyn admitted. She enjoyed it, but knew it wasn’t for everyone.Word Count:

doesn't feel like it • threadOphelia did not know as many people here as she had first assumed she did. Well, at least not personally. She'd seen everyone around before, of course she had, but some of them she'd never even spoken to before. But here she was to celebrate her friend and she'd stay the whole time and make the best of the social situation.
She turned around from her surveying of the room when she heard someone call her name. It was a boy, one that she immediately recognised, even before he gave himself a title. A fellow Quidditch player from her team, and not just that, a fellow second-string player. "Oh, hi! Andy, right?" She smiled, asking the question for confirmation though she already knew the answer. She laughed a little as he complimented her playing-- he probably hadn't seen her play all that much, she only ever did during practise. But still, the silly complimented warmed her. "Oh, thank you! I still haven't played in a real match yet, have you?"
Kaitlyn, one of the girls that she'd spoken to briefly in first year, showed up next. Ever the kind-hearted soul, she walked in giving everyone their own personalised greetings. Ophelia smiled at her and nodded a hello back to her.
When Brookline asked Ophelia whether or not she'd brought Dove, the Ravenclaw's eyes widened. She looked around, searching for the furry best friend of her own kitty cat. "Oh, is Tigeress here? Ack, I was debating on going back to my dorm and picking Dove up, but I didn't want to be late."
Ophelia watched the party get off to a start. Brookline offered everyone cupcakes, which, of course, the Ravenclaw took one of. She had a sweet tooth, that much was true, and she was pretty sure she'd gotten it from her father. Then the group decided to look up at the clouds and... name them? The activity was definitely not something that Ophelia usually did, but. hey, why not if it was an activity that Brookline enjoyed? It was her special day, after all.
Ophelia looked up, her head tilted towards where Andy had pointed, claiming that one of the clouds had looked like a turtle. She tipped her head to the side just a bit, squinting to try and make out the described shape. Uh, maybe she wasn't in the right mind because she could not see the turtle.

ℬrookline took a deep breath as she heard Sage speaking to her. Lack of feeling? She knew what the phrase meant but usually she felt all her emotion and usually she could feel them. Hard and painful. She nodded, though a slight bit confused, she wasn’t about to show the confusion on her face. “Okay, Sage. I’ll do that.” She replied to Sage’s last words.
Kaitlyn had gave Brookline a little squeeze, and Brookline was reminded of Emily’s warm hugs. Then Kaitlyn told her that her Turing thirteen was a important milestone. “I suppose it is. I’m assuming sixteen will be even bigger?” She added wryly.
Then Ophelia had widened her eyes at the mention of both of their cats. “That darned cat here... Somewhere... Anyways, that’s completely fine. I’ll say hi to her later!” Brookoine grinned a bit, and waved it off. She was looking forward to seeing Dove but that’s fine. She just partially just didn’t want Tigeress to be lonely. Ah, that kitten’s fine, She thought, and gazed around her for Tigeress, she’s probably out catching a bird or mouse.
Andy was first, accepting a cupcake, stating that they didn’t need party games, just naming the clouds....? Was that a Muggle game? Brookline wasn’t sure, and her glance looked a little suspicious. But, trying to stay positive, she cocked her neck up to the sky, and tried to look for the cloud Andy's wand pointed too. “That - that...uh... I don’t... think that’s a turtle...??”
Sage, Kaitlyn, and Ophelia took a cupcake as well. Sage persisted that Brookline take the first bite. Kaitlyn seconded it, and Brookline smiled at her friends. “Okay, I guess!” She grabbed one of her cupcakes for the basket, and slowly peeled off the white wrapper. And took a bite. Her cupcakes are delicious! Thank goodness, they are actually good! Oh, I thought they would be bad.
Then Brookline remembered that Pam and Elisa hadn’t taken a cupcake yet. She held the basket out for them, while not-so-gracefully balancing her cupcakes in her left hand. “Pam, Elisa? Would you still like one?” She offered, smiling a bit.

ooc notes- interacting/mentioning- @Brookline Quinn, @Ophelia Northwell, @Kaitlyn Connor, @Elisa Wagner, @Andy Loggins, @Pamela GrahamThe social gathering was nice. Busy, but nice. Sage tried her best to look engaged, happy. And part of her was. Part of her was thrilled for Brook and for her birthday. The other felt empty. The other felt... blue.
"Yes, great to see you again!" Sage said, smiling at Kaitlyn. "We'll have to try harder to see each other socially more often!"
Listening to bits and pieces of other conversations, Sage froze a small grin on her face. Stay looking happy. You're happy for your friend. Forget about what happened ten days ago. Just... smile. Her mind was going a million miles a minute, racing, racing, and trying to calm itself.
Once Brook had taken her cupcake, Sage extended her arm to take one. Being honest, it was far better than Sage's treats had been for her 13th birthday. Chewing quietly, Sage returned back to what Brookline and the boy- Andy, she believed his name was, had been talking about. She'd done that game before, looking at the clouds for different shapes. It felt like it was forever ago.
"I think it looks more like a goat than a turtle!" Sage laughed. "Well... maybe? A turtle-goat, I guess." She'd tried to be funny, be normal, but it didn't feel like it had worked. It didn't feel right. Sage kept smiling though.

__◇ Thoughts: Italic Mentions: @Brookline Quinn ◇__ ⌞ ⌟Elisa wrapped her arms around her legs, surveying the Hogwarts Grounds quietly, melancholy glistening in her bright hazel eyes. She could feel the slight tension in the air; the joyful smiles plastered on everyone's lips seemed to be only masks, excuses around what they truly felt. Of course, they all knew Brookline hadn't been faring so well lately, even if the details behind the latter were mysteries to some.
Elisa heaved a little sigh, turning her gaze back to her friend. Life hadn't gone easy on the Ravenclaw girl. She remembered who Brookline had been before everything took a turn for her, and some part of her grieved the girl Brooke had left behind. Life goes on, she told herself silently.
The Slytherin listened half-heartedly to her peers' chatting. Small talk... She had never much enjoyed these menial, awkward conversations - but today was Brooke's birthday, so she'd at least make an effort.
Elisa took a cupcake from Brookline, thanking her with a grin and a muttered 'thank you'. She peeled off the wrapping carefully, and as the scent met her nostrils, she had to fight not to pluck the whole of it in her mouth at once. Merlin, she had forgotten how hungry she was.

doesn't feel like it • threadOphelia unwrapped the cupcake that she received from Brookline. It was a beautiful little pastry, with immaculate white frosting and a little violet that she assumed was edible as decoration. A little part of Ophelia, the part that just couldn't stay still and enjoy a moment, started worrying about her gift to her friend. The figurine would be a win, definitely. It had been a win for the Ravenclaw girl herself when her brother Felix had presented it to her. But the cookies? They were chocolate-marshmallow, and if these cupcakes showed anything, it was that Brookline liked vanilla, and perhaps over chocolate so...
Stop overthinking it, Ophelia. The Ravenclaw had to take a moment to close her eyes and separate herself from the quiet commotion of the birthday party. She always over thought these things. Gift giving was not her strong suit, but she was still a perfectionist, after all.
When Ophelia brought herself back to the world around her, she realised that the party hadn't moved much farther. They were still debating on whether that one cloud, the one that Ophelia still wasn't sure if she was looking at correctly, was a goat or a turtle or some other creature. Unsure how to participate, the girl took a nibble out of her cupcake, fighting the urge to close her eyes and smile at its goodness.
Brookline commented on the cloud, her voice making her sound very, very unsure about her assessment of its shape. Sage seemed more thoughtful in her response. Perhaps she'd done this before? She suggested something different. A turtle-goat.
That made Ophelia laugh slightly. "I guess I could see turtle-goat."

ReducioBeaming at Brook, Kaitlyn giggled. “Hopefully? For now, let’s celebrate the present. All of us here together to celebrate you,” she smiled. To be fair, she was aware of a change in Brook. While she wasn’t aware of the intricate details of what happened, owing to her lack of interaction with her friends to her shyness and introverted nature. She wanted to do her best to help. This was supposed to be a birthday party, after all!
Looking back at Sage, Kaitlyn nodded. “I want to, too. I had fun practicing with you before,” she smiled warmly at Sage. That was true, too. She wanted to try her best to be there for her friends. To be more involved. To be present. That was the number one thing she could offer. As important as the details were, she really wanted her friends to know they always had a friendly ear with her. How well she conveyed that … remained to be seen.
After seeing Brook eat the cupcake, Kaitlyn smiled and took a polite bite out of the cupcake. A giggle escaped her lips. “These are fantastic, Brook! I need to bake more often … only doing it at home hasn’t helped me practice much!” Not being allowed in the kitchens certainly had that impact, unfortunately! She looked over at Elisa and smiled at her, as the other girl quietly ate the cupcake.
Shyly brushing a hand around her pigtail braids, Kaitlyn’s blue eyes rose to the sky above … watching the clouds. “A turtle goat,” she repeated with a giggle after Ophelia’s confirmation. “That’s an interesting combination,” she laughed. “Maybe it’s meant to represent a Transfiguration accident?” She suggested. They were in a school of magic, after all. “Or success? As much as I like cloud gazing, I’m not sure they mean something that concrete.”Word Count:
