Standing with her back turned to the refreshment table apart from other attendees as she was, Astrea found herself once again surrounded by a circle of negative space. It seemed that none had bothered to break the invisible barrier of social conformity to speak to the blueblood, and the excess of space caused the Slytherin's dressy attire to seem larger than normal, her cape splaying out in a twist that seemed more elegant than anything and gold wire hairpiece gleaming in the firelight where it nestled between inky locks.

The malted sweetness of the sikhye gave a steady distraction as her thoughts began to wonder, the familiarness of the taste drawing back memories of high-ceilinged cathedrals carved out of black ebony and inlaid with glimmering shards of stained glass, of jade-walled temples, with waftings of incense laid thick in the air. Of brick-floored open squares, surrounded with walls and the warm late winter days that marked Seollal. It made her think too much about those days she looked forward to every year. It was a nostalgic feeling. It was an offensive feeling.

Mentally filing those thoughts away, she was unpleasantly not surprised to find that the ball scene in front of her had already dissolved into mild chaos. Screaming, alarmingly loud music, and a literal scuffle unravelling somewhere nearby, not to mention the sheer amount of people. Compared to the near sickeningly civil galas she had attended in the past, the situation seemed even more preposterous and chaotic. Her delicate features soured slightly as the corners of her lips twitched downwards, Davy's grey eyes darkening as she scanned the mess of prepubescent children with mild disgust.

Honestly, she had expected more from Hogwarts. Expected more from her fellow schoolmates, but what was there to do? Astrea wasn't wholly akin to her parental figures, with their obsession about being of the purest blood, of looking as untainted as possible, of preserving the central core points of their appearances. However, she did agree with the fact that the common masses- pureblood elite or not- were bound to hold themselves well, bound to save face and at least- this she could not comprehend what went wrong at the ball with this point- bound to hold themselves with some semblance of rationality.

There was suddenly a sense of dread trickling down her spine, settling gradually deep in the cavity of her chest as if a minuscule stream of something that could have become a waterfall. What was happening to her- Astrea sought to reach into her mind and pull her attention from the squabbling near-teens to the tall, masked figures slowly starting to drift away from the ballroom and out the doors. The teachers were leaving- what? Astrea's slight frown was joined with her eyes dimming further, perfectly sculpted eyebrows scrunching in a microexpression of concerned intrigue.

This- This wasn't good, to say the least.

Heather Ruby wrote: 28 Oct 2019, 21:26The music's bass was loud enough to pulse in Heather's bones. It had already been that strong just from standing on the floor, which had helped throw her balance off. But now that more of her body was in contact with the ground, the throbbing beat was downright painful. She winced, struggling to rise while still feeling around for her glasses. There were no shapes to see around her anymore, only an always moving mass of light, shadow, color, and sound.

She heard Andrew's voice nearby, felt his hands on her arms. She sighed with relief as he pulled her upright, though he too was a shapeless blur of color before her eyes now. "I... I think I'm alright... Just... I think my bones are humming... I need to sit down..." She leaned on him, trying not to topple him, but not trusting her ability to walk straight at the moment until her innards stopped pulsing. She felt nauseous and shaky. "Can you find my glasses anywhere? I can't see a thing."

The yelling sounded like it was getting worse as if a whole brawl had or was on the verge of breaking out, and she didn't want to be anywhere near it. She could hear a boy--or was it a wounded animal?--roaring in a fury, and another voice screaming for forgiveness. There was a third voice, male, she thought, shouting for the professors to intervene. She dearly hoped they would.

She clutched at Andrew's arm out of fear as they passed dangerously close--to her ears anyway--to the source of the combat. The rallying cry of "Professor!" was nearer still, and she felt more than saw a presence as they passed, someone large and imposing. Another student? She knew some were larger than others, rumors of some kids being half-giant, but she had never met any of them personally.

Finally they were back at their table, and she gratefully sank into her chair. She knew it was theirs because Andrew helped her into the seat where she had left her guide cane. She fumbled for her drink, spilling it in the process, and sighed in annoyance. "Sorry. I guess I ruined our dance, huh?" she said to Andrew.

"I'll help, let's get outta here first," Andrew ushered quickly. He held tightly to Heather's arm, keeping her close to prevent her from falling over or getting separated from him as he led the way across the dancefloor. Once they were free, Andrew could relax his grip a little, though he was still too worried about Heather's condition and her missing glasses to concern himself with anything else that was happening around them.

Once they had reached their table, he helped Heather find her seat, but didn't take his, instead standing beside her while he tried to figure out what to do next. This music certainly wasn't helping his thoughts relax. What else would they do if Heather's glasses weren't found? He couldn't imagine them staying longer in the Ballroom..

"No, you didn't," he started in defense, assuring Heather that she had nothing to blame herself for -- after she tipped her glass over and the punch spilled onto the tablecloth. Andrew's hand shot in to save what little liquid was remaining in the cup as he placed it back upright. "Hang on a sec," he said cheerily. "Let's see if I can clean this up."

Whipping out his chestnut red wand from his conveniently large trouser pocket, he pointed it at the soaked-in puddle. "Scourgify," he said, with a little S-shaped wave of his wand. Within seconds, the stain vanished, leaving the cream-colored linen as good as new. "There, nothing happened," he said, pleased with the result. He slipped the wand back into his pocket.

He turned his attention back to the dancefloor, debating if it was worth it to try and find Heather's glasses amidst so many people. It'd be a miracle if they hadn't been trampled and smashed underfoot already. Bracing himself, he exhaled sharply. "Alright, I'll see if I can dive back in there and find those glasses. You’ll be okay here?" He glanced down at Heather.

He was prepared to make his way back to the dancefloor, scanning the area for the missing items. His exasperation was growing. Not at Heather, but at the source of what caused Heather to trip and fall. He wanted to march right up to where the band was playing, swipe that mic from the lead singer and announce, HEY! We got a blind girl that lost her glasses and we need all hands on deck to find them! Forget the mask, those glasses were the most important thing to recover. Perhaps he should alert a professor and tell them about the situation?

Notice: Heather's Catwoman mask (likely snagged on someone's costume) and glasses (likely somewhere on the dancefloor) are currently lost and up for grabs, for anyone interested in having their characters find them.

Kyle felt the shock of the connection against the half Giants jaw run up his arm, and it was in this moment he realized just how lucky he was that he had his hands properly wrapped. Almost at the same time his blow connected the blonde girl he was trying to rescue threw a kick of her own and struck the ginger in the chest and their combined efforts laid the larger student flat on his back. Kyle let out a triumphant "Woo! FUCK You!" before looking towards the girl he had just helped free from the large boy. "I got this, you should probably ge-" and before he could finish the ginger began to rage out and as much as Kyle loved to fight, he also was aware how much larger this boy was than him. "Get out of here!" he said to the girl and squared himself against the Ginger.

As the half-giant rushed towards him he saw a girl with...buns in her...hair...CAKES! she saw Cakes leap onto the back of the Ginger and start to choke him out. Awesome! though that didn't stop the large boy from punching out regardless and the blow connected with Kyle's chest and knocked the wind out of him and he stumbled backwards, most likely bumping into atleast a few people before he doubled over and a hand when to his chest as he coughed.

Then he saw the guy slump over as he was being choked out and Kyle saw his chance to finish things. He closed his right hand into a tight fist as he rushed forward and jumped slightly to propel himself as he threw what the muggles referred to as a "Super man punch" right for the Ginger's face with a grunt of exertion as he put everything he had behind the attack

Quinn going down stole her attention away from Gris and it was at that point that San stepped out of her heels. She was terrified but at the same time she, like Gris, couldn’t let this continue so she gathered her dress into her hands exposing her now bare feet. When Quinn screamed, she flinched but she started running over shouldering people if she had too. When it came to helping her friends she could be brave especially if it meant stopping her friend from making a mistake.

This needed to stop.

Her heart pounded so hard in her chest she thought it was going to bust through her ribcage as Gris jumped on the large boys back. It didn’t stop the well-aimed punch from at least hitting Kyle in the chest and knocking him back and doubling him over. This is what gave her most of the time to cross the distance she needed to cross. She hadn’t really known what she was going to do when she got there when she started, but it seemed now the only way to end this would be to take Kyle to the ground. She was probably the only one besides a professor who could do it without too much consequence. Even though she expected retaliation from him she still though that this was for the best.

Quinn had backed down there was no need to continue. She let go of the folds of her dress and jumped at Kyle. “ROOK STOP!” She yelled at him as her feet left the ground. If she was successful she would wrap her arms around his torso to take him to the ground and brace herself for no doubt at least an arm breaking with both of their weight landing on her arms.

Grayson shot Brielle and her date a pair of finger guns and made his way to Maggie, a smile unable to be kept off his face. She looked great, I mean- She always looked great, but she was stunning now. She looked perfect. That he was sure of.

She seemed to be talking to someone, though he didn't know who. He was sure they were a second year, as they had been in his classes. Their name though? Not a clue. He decided to act a little sly and come up to her from behind, placing his hands in front of her eyes to say- "Guess who?" He then took one of her hands into his and grinned, using his other to push back his hair.

"You look amazing! You always look amazing- but.." Usually Grayson knew exactly what to say exactly when to say it, though right now he was at a loss for words. He didn't know what to say, so instead of talking, he glanced over at the boy next to her and nodded. "Grayson Ackley, Maggie Parker's date. What's your name?" He asked curiously, wondering if he had a date around here somewhere too. There were people everywhere, bloody hell.

Adrenaline pumped, his eyes were focused, his fist was clenched and the whole of the Ball room stopped existing as he was solely focused on devastating the Half giant. Not only did he love fighting in general, in his mind he was doing a good deed by helping the blond girl and assisting in taking out a really big guy who could hurt who knows how many people if we was aloud to just stomp and rage around. Suddenly something crashed into his side and he jerked sideways before crashing onto the ballroom floor, his head smacking against the Stone(marble?).

there was a loud smack sound as his head connected with the floor and his bright light flashes through his mind and all at once everything changed, as if one suddenly pulled the E-brake and removed the key from the ignition of a car that just moments earlier was going 100 down the highway. The room spun, everything had a muddled distant echo that made it sound like it was reverberating and moving in and out of his range of hearing, he felt like he was fighting with his eyes to try to get them to focus and his mouth suddenly felt like it was full of marbles as he struggled to find words

one hand pushed up against his mask to move it slightly askew as his other hand blindly felt for whatever it was that had slammed into him. "-ha fuhg hit me..." he mumbled as he struggled to regain some sort of understanding of the situation developing around him

xxx"Thank you, Dymphna. You look nice as well."

Despite the twinge of jealousy, Phaedra did mean it. They had started off as academic rivals but had gotten closer since working together in the library and going for tea. Yet, they were still not close enough though to discuss crushes, so what Dymphna implied next left her flustered.

"Intruding?" Phaedra made a tutting noise that sounded almost defensive. "No. What's there to intr—" She cut off when a deafening riff emitted from the band and then Max spoke up by her side. Disregarding what she had wanted to say to Dymphna, Phaedra shot him a look as he rambled on with such fervent opposition to the idea of being on a date with her. Lately, she had several questions on where her relationship with Max stood, but it was perfectly clear now. She ignored the heavy pang in her chest and turned away from the conversation to refill half of her glass. "Right. What he said. Just at the ball—" she raised her drink— "Eating and meeting, as friends do."

In the corner of her eye, Phaedra spot Rosie Parker approaching the food table in a gold dress. The Hufflepuff waved at her and she forced a smile to be polite, not too sure that it was her until she had gotten a good look. "Oh, look there. I think that's Rosie Parker." She wasn't really friends with Parker, and their relationship could only be summed up as developing. Nevertheless, Phaedra found her an enigma. In the few times they had spoken, Rosie put up with her grueling questions about muggle society, and seemed to be in high enough esteem among the rest of her friends. Lifting her hand, Phaedra returned the wave to the girl at the other end of the food table. She wouldn't mind if she stopped for a chat.

Elliot shook hands with Professor Browne as a smile of his own spread across his face. “Ha...yes. Professor Price. Never thought I’d ever hear those words, but here we are, destined to be colleagues for life I suppose.” Although the two did not socialize much it was nice to have a familiar face around the castle. It made the experience seem a less daunting. If another healer could transition from health care to education, surely he could do it too. It wasn’t that Elliot doubted his skill or his knowledge of the subject, but teaching students was hard. Connecting with them was proving to be a challenge. Elliot shook off the thought as Professor Zahid greeted him.

“Right you are Professor Masoud.” Elliot reassured the History teacher. “I am well, thank you. I hope the night is treating you just as kind.” He couldn’t blame the man for being unsure as he rarely socialized. A point that would be driven home by Caradoc. “Yes, busy indeed Mister Browne. Head down, trying to get a handle on this new role. A trip you say? I wouldn’t mind playing chaperone, let me know what you have in mind.” The idea of a field trip honestly wasn’t that thrilling, but maybe it would help him become more comfortable with the students.

Elliot’s eyes followed Caradoc’s as they drifted off towards the band. He laughed into his drink at the comment about the music that was currently playing. It was a bit much. “Same here Zahid. The musical arts never called to me. Always a bit too loud for my liking. Maybe the Headmaster is just playing a cruel joke on us.” Elliot answered the two with a shrug. Then a large presence drew his attention. A very tall girl approached the trio with warning of a fight on the grounds. With a quick scan of the room, Elliot would notice a few other heads that rose high above the others in the crowd. He knew Hogwarts had a couple part giants of their own and assumed the others were with the Americans. Caradoc and Zahid went off with the girl. Elliot set aside his glass and made way to follow. “Duty calls,” he mumbled to himself as he exited the event.

Arc was not that thrilled to join tonight’s party. Others might be jubilant and enthralled by the mystery of it all. But he only saw it as a hassle, a time-consuming event that would only cut even further to his already limited reading time. Even now a part of him wanted to change his costume back to a more comfortable pajamas and read “The Unmentioned Applications of Obscure Spells” book that he had been reading these past two days until he fell asleep. The young Prefect was just getting to the juicy part.

He had not even mentioned that there would probably be problems happening tonight in the ball. He could just feel it. Terrible things always happened when these many people, students even more so, gathered. Well, maybe it was not that terrible things were attracted to gatherings of people. Maybe it was just the Murphy’s Law multiplied manifold with so many people cramped up together in one room. Sigh. If he was not a Prefect, he might not even come to the Masquerade Ball.

Hence, the lateness.

The Masquerade Ball was already underway for more than half an hour when the dark-haired boy got to the door. He fixed the owl mask on his face as he passed two lovebirds enjoying the night. He was not interested in their conversation. He put down the cane he was propping on top of his shoulder and its metallic end clunked when it hit the floor. The almost-not-kid had a scholarly air around him as he entered and surveyed the Ballroom. At the same time, even with a mask donned on his face, his presence still pushed a throng of people away from him. Apparently, it was not his face that was scary.

He did not have the time to be bitter about it, though, as he saw a problem brewing in the middle of the ball and his weird ability might actually help him. A fight. There was a girl choking a huge boy and then another boy tried to punch him before gotten taken down on his own. He was not clear of what was going on. But he proceeded towards them anyway. Some of Raine must have rubbed off on him.

Right then he was sure. This would be another long night.

Well… This was not well thought out. Then again was tackling anyone ever thought out besides in some sports? Santario had never tackled anyone before in her life she had just known that she needed to stop Kyle from landing another punch on Quinn. They were both her friends but Kyle was in the wrong and this was the only course of action that made sense at the moment.

Her arms wrapped around him and she took him down with the sickening sounds of his head cracking against the floor and one of her forearms snapping under neither their combined weight. Surely though her cry of pain and the sounds of damage were drowned out by the terrible music in the background. She heard Kyle’s speech patterns considering her head was on his chest and remembered how he spoke after he had been hit with the bludger after the quidditch match… He had at least a mild concussion… again.

She had to get off of him but with both of her arms pinned beneath him, this was not going to be easy or painless. Tears already stung her eyes as she bit hard on her lower lip trying to distract herself from the pain in her broken arm. It didn't work, but she decided this needed to be done like a band-aid and pulled her non-broken arm out from underneath Kyle. Rolling to the side putting her again between him and Quinn. She looked over at him now and the look on Quinn’s face broke her heart. “Q-Quinn… It’s going to be okay.” She managed, knowing that Gris would help him though now that he had relented. Now San just had to figure out how to get her and Kyle to the infirmary this was not going to be an easy task at all… considering she could barely think through the pain radiating from her arm like lightning striking the same spot over and over.

Tears streamed down her face underneath her mask and she felt like she was suffocating. That was when she felt it though… She tensed up more as if that were even possible and it felt like her hair stood on end as it does before a storm. More danger? Her eyes scanned what she could from the floor, but she didn’t see anyone yet… Wait, no, there was someone seemingly beelining for them. Hopefully, someone who could actually help despite the feeling wafting off of him.
