Gwen smiled warmly as Aurelia jumped in her seat; although she was nervous herself, she seemed successful in feigning confidence.

"Sorry for startling you," she replied, "and that cow's just superb, by the way."

She handed back the sketchpad and listened intently as Aurelia began to speak.

"Of course you can call me Gwen; I prefer it anyways. Guinevere was always too pretentious for my taste."

As the girl went on to ask about Gwen's family, she concealed a nervous smile before going on to answer. Could this change her opinion of me? It was never something she had needed to consider before discovering the wizarding world. But as a muggle-raised half-blood, she was painfully aware that she could be the subject of traditional scorn from blood-purist wizarding families. But Aurelia seemed kind enough so far, and so the young witch was willing to reveal her status.

"My family! Well, I have two older brothers, for starters. My family actually lived in China before we came to Scotland. I was raised there until I was five. I'd always help my grandfather tend to his crops before we had to move." she began, "But we made the move when my dad was accepted as a professor of chemistry at Edinburgh University."

"He's a muggle," she explained cautiously, "and my mum's a witch. Not that any of us knew until last year."

She nervously fiddled with her robes as she spoke, eager to change the subject lest she be make a bad impression.

"What about your family?"

Aurelia noticed the young girls nervous attitude and she knew why, "You don't have to worry about your blood status around me despite the fact that I am a pureblood I have never considered muggles, muggle borns or half bloods lower than myself." She then sighed softly as this decision had caused her troubles with her own family.

Aurelia listened attentively as the girl spoke and nodded with a smile, "Wow that sounds lovely I'm very envious." She admitted and looked away upon hearing the dreaded question of 'what about your family?' She gulped and looked up, this would surely change their opinion about her. "Well..." She started uneasily, "M-My parents are pureblood, they're also a dark witch and wizard like the rest of my family.." She gulped again, feeling really nervous, "Um.. My mom is currently in Azkaban and my dad is on the run... My remaining family call me a blood traitor and um... I have a little sister but she doesn't fully understand the wizarding world yet and aside from me she is the only good person in my family..." Aurelia then looked down in her hands, daring not to look up at the girl in front of her for fear that she was being heavily judged.

Chezem started laughing all of a sudden as he listened to the conversation. Then he realised what he had done and blushed a bright red.

"Sorry...Um...I didn't mean to laugh, it's just...Well, I found it funny. A lot of people I meet either moved to England when they were five or something big happened to them at the age of five. I wonder if five is a lucky number for wizards. I think I'm going to take arithmancy as my elective for the third year."

Cheez-it turned, smiling at everyone before returning to what he had previously been doing.

"Oh, and Gwen, you can definitely call me Cheez-it. I don't mind in the slightest." He said to her. The blonde boy observed everything going on around him as he sat there and listened to the ongoing conversation. Taking deep breaths and feeling a bit wheezy, he decided to lean back a bit and try to clear his lungs. He shut his eyes and allowed himself to relax, the constricting feeling vanishing as he continued to relax. Chezem sat back up and returned to his normal self, the feeling going away. He sincerely hoped no one had noticed and was extremely thankful when no one commented on it.

"Honestly I've had enough maths in muggle school, so unfortunately there's no way I'm joining you in arithmancy!" she exclaimed in response to the boy.

Her expression shifted from mirth to one of sincerity as Aurelia confessed the unfortunate circumstance of her family. At first she was taken by surprise, and a flash of fear may have been evident in her eyes. But after listening to the full story, she was reminded of a famous wizard she had read about in preparation for her entry into the wizarding world.

"You know who you remind me of?" Gwen said, "You're just like that wizard, Sirius Black. I've read all about him; he was in the order of the phoenix, you know? They were like, the main good guys fighting against the Dark Lord."

The young witch then blushed a deep shade of red, realising that although she had been surprised and fascinated to learn about the history of the great wizarding war from her History of Magic text, Aurelia likely already much more on the topic.

"I'm sorry, you probably already knew all that," she apologised, "but my point is that it makes no difference to me if your family is mixed up in some bad stuff. You seem like a lovely person to me."

"Honestly, I'm glad the other carriages are full. I've met two lovely and funny people; I wouldn't have it any other way. Not to be corny or anything."

"Dark Lord? Do you mean Moldy-Shorts? I still can't understand how anyone was ever afraid of someone with a name like that. It's absolutely ridiculous. And kind of sat, because his name translates to 'flight from death'. I swear, any number of people could have taken him out if someone had just used muggle weapons on him instead of wands. A gun would have done quite nicely." Chezem said.

He didn't appreciate how far behind the times most wizards were. Most of them didn't even know they had already landed on the moon! He thought it was stupid and after he graduated, he was going to find a way to make phones work around magic so that kids would not have to keep writing letters all the time and get an immediate response from their family if they absolutely needed one.

"Or, hey, a grenade in his base would have done good too. Then scoop the sludge and put it in a jar, then you bury it in a slab of six-foot thick concrete and voila! You are done, Mister No-Nose is dead, and everyone can celebrate without fear of him coming back!" Chezem said. It was clear he was passionate about that.

Aurelia was really glad to have not been judged for the wrong doings of her parents and she let herself smile again. "I'm really glad to have met the both of you on this train ride, so far you've been the highlight of my day." She said as she looked between the both of them. "I really hope we can become friends during our time at Hogwarts." She said quietly as she looked down.

She was a very shy girl and so the fact that she was offering friendship was a very big step for her to take especially given that she was never very good at making friends thanks to her parents and their notoriety. Just then the trolley came down and the woman knocked on the door, Aurelia's eyes lit up as she stood up and headed to the compartment door. She slid it open with a grin, "Anything from the trolley love?" Feeling all the excitement as she looked at all of the sweets on the trolley Aurelia took a small amount of galleons from her pocket, her parents were good at one thing and that was saving up money for her since before she was even born as they wanted their future kids to have money available to them when they needed it, that was of course before they switched to the dark side entirely but even so they continued to place money in Gringotts. "One of everything please!" She exclaimed and then headed back to her seat with a small pile of sweets in her arms.

Was this what her parents intended for her to do with her money? Nope, no way in hell but were they there to stop her? Also no, not in any way shape or form and that's why she was free to do as she pleased.

Gwen's lips parted into a warm smile at Aurelia's confession, and she found herself nodding in earnest agreement. She hadn't expected to find such a nice pair of friends on her very first day, let alone within the first few minutes of boarding the Hogwarts Express. When she finally learnt about the wizarding world, ten years overdue, she had pictured a place where she couldn't fit in. A place where her muggle upbringing would hinder her ability to show strength and capability. But instead, she had been pleasantly surprised to meet two of the most fascinating and kind people her age.

"You know, I couldn't be gladder either. I thought I'd be the only person on this train without a clue what's going on, but I'm glad I have you two to orient me," she agreed, "and now I'm so excited to be in school with you both!"

"Maybe we'll even be in the same house," she added quietly, not wanting to be too sappy.

As the trolley lady walked by, Gwen's eyes went wide. There were no ordinary snacks, but rather an assortment of vibrant and mobile candies, pasties, and chocolates writhed in place. A chocolate frog leapt onto the glass from within another carriage, and shining liquorice wands lay limber in their jar.
"One of everything please!"
Gwen watched in awe as Aurelia pressed a few large golden coins into the lady's wrinkled hands. In return, a considerable hoard of candies and snacks were promptly piled onto the carriage table, sprawled out in a beautiful mess of colour and flavour.

"No way!" Gwen exclaimed, watching with fascination as a round orange gourd on the packaging of a pumpkin pasty sprung to life, as if it were a video. "The pictures move! That's ace!"

It may seem obvious and mundane to a witch or wizard, but Gwen had never seen a drawing move like that.

"Do they all move?" she asked, her eyes filled with wonder and her mouth hanging slightly agape, "The drawings, I mean. I read in Hogwarts, a History that the castle's got moving paintings, but I thought that was a special case."
