Excellent fun 'til you get to know her...
✰✰✰
The start of the race had everyone and their mothers bolting off like they'd been shot from a wandtip, and Aly was no exception, putting her heels to her Oakshaft and leaning forward to try to get her speed to its maximum. However, out of the corner of her eye, her keen gaze spotted that prick of a Slytherin move not as if he were trying to fly particularly fast but rather as if he were aiming at her... something Aly did not like. Her wand was already in her hand. It was an easy thing to cast, a Shield Charm. Simple enough to bounce away whatever charm that Colin bloke had thrown her way, or perhaps she just dodged as she swooped away from the spectators.

Either way, the casting, the dodging, the dirty look and muttered curse word she threw under her breath at Colin - they slowed her down enough so that almost all of the other competitors whizzed by her. Piérre was in the lead, but that meant nothing, necessarily - still, it was such a short race that he was over halfway done while she had barely moved forward from the start line. If the sixth-year Ravenclaw ever met this white-haired Slytherin in a dark corridor...

"Lucky dodge, my arse," she mumbled under her breath. At this point it's like he's not even trying to win, just to make sure I lose! Folks like him are what give his House a bad name. Sneering in Colin's direction, Aly focused on the race in front of her, trying to ignore him from now on. He was just one of many competitors, after all, many of whom's backs were retreating in the distance in front of them. Any shot at victory was quickly siphoning away...

Then she runs like it’s a race!

Gripping the broomstick tightly, Kaitlyn was ready for when Alyss cried out that the broom racers could start. She began flying at a decent speed, in her opinion. A small smile crossed her lips. From what she could tell, this was a fairly straightforward course … in her opinion. This being her first time, however, did not mean that she was going to take things too easily on herself. She was here to learn, and learn she would do … even if that meant having to go to the Hospital Wing to regrow bones. She’d imagine that would be painful!

The first obstacle was … goodness, the very students watching them. Kaitlyn was trying to pay attention to her flying and make sure she didn’t accidentally hurt anyone. Thankfully, she breezed past the spectators with a smile, happy that she was safe so far. Then came the narrowing wall. With all the students trying to fly past it, it was hard to avoid.

Sweep left … sweep right. No matter what Kaitlyn tried, it wasn’t enough to correct her course. She didn’t notice it until it was too late. Ruth had been flying near her, which she didn’t mind at all. But the Hufflepuff tried to overtake her, and she did so successfully. But that didn’t give Kaitlyn enough time to avoid the wall. Her shoulder hit the wall. Thankfully, nothing was broken … but she was definitely bruised from that.

Shaking out the jolt from the collision with her shoulder, Kaitlyn returned with the other racers to tackle the next round. Hopefully, she’d go further this time!

"Oh yes, Mannaro Werewolf, a rematch is certainly in the cards. I gotta prove I'm worth my salt somehow... God knows I'm not good at much as it is."

Kicking his feet in the air lazily, an outside kick caught his attention and caused him to snap to--to see by now familiar wild brunette hair and notable green eyes. Aly...!

With a mocked-up moan of pain as he grabbed the 'injured' member and then slid off the broom, hooking his other knee on the shaft to leave him suspended upside down. The teasing pain-act turned quickly into a smile. Yes, it was strange wasn't it. Perhaps, though, it could be considered a sign. A positive one for once, perhaps? "Coincidence? Perhaps. Either that or someone's stalking." An upside-down wink as he looked up at the eaglet in his year. "But hey, I won't complain."

His mouth formed a small 'o' at the insinuation of squaring up on the younger kids. "Scandal! Look, if they're gonna be facing off against Ravenclaw's broom racing team, someone's gotta toughen them up. I'm the softest 'senior' on any of the teams. Can't even get past the midpoint of the races, after all." A pained laugh. It was no secret that the currently eldest Gryffindor on the broom racing team had had a terrible streak of luck in all of his showings thus far. Something always seemed to go wrong whenever he merely showed up, and always whenever it was a pivotal point in the game, seemingly without fail. In contrast... Ravenclaw had gained a pair of very powerful players indeed. For God's sake, Pericles was on their side, and Piérre was of the firm opinion that if you had Pericles on your side the battle was already half-lost for those that dared to stand against.

And this was without considering the very wild and blindsiding component of Dealla alongside... "These kids'll probably beat me up and steal my lunch money. I'm the one that's gonna be crying uncle by the end of it... probably." Shrugs looked strange when hanging upside down, but he sure tried. He wasn't really... looking forwards to... well, competing with Ravenclaw with his and his team's track record the past year.

As he was getting ready to swing himself up, flaming red hair caught his naturally distractable eye. Oh he knew that hair anywhere, and the trappings of the person who walked and carried a presence of the nature of it. "EEVEE! COME FLY WITH US!" He waved both hands at her wildly, hoping that a raised voice and motion would catch the keen eyes of another distant but still beloved classmate of his. They had had a strange history together: quidditch teammates, early acquaintances through the case of Potter, duelling teammates, and as recently as the year prior she had exorcised from him a rather filthy creature that had been plaguing him unconsciously for years... Hag Slugs that the entire school population was later inoculated against that very next fall.

She had changed so much. Anyone would have been blind to say otherwise, and perhaps it had been strange--wrong--to watch and rarely reach out. Cowardice at past experiences, cowardice of daring to speak to someone he saw as... well... capable of finding better company and intellectual stimulation than him.

Perhaps that should change.

"I know you have a broom! Come on, the air's perfectly fine!"

But just like that, everyone was lining up, and Piérre had to swing up and onto Orabella even as the race began, corskscrewing through the air as he urged acceleration and velocity to take full hold as he launched full-tilt towards the designated path forwards. He had to go faster. He had to push harder. Racing in practice, racing in a real contest, was one thing--this was another. Now that he had a personal challenge, a goal, he had to meet it. Something surely had to go right for him for once.

"HEADS UP!" He announced as he made his way with the thick pack of fellow racers and watchers. The first bystander he cut a hard left around, only to bash into a second, which sent him spiralling cleanly alongside a third before he finally came out of the spin. Pulling farther, he watched Colin and Aly fall behind along with Prat--hey when had he gotten here?!--before taking a deep breath and tucking in close to the broomshaft, flattening himself down and willing himself to shrink... did he actually appear to slightly shrink as his hair gained a strange feather-like sheen?... so as to clear the thinnest part of the narrow passageway before allowing himself to take a breath of relief and reassess.

More had fallen behind, but a throng was still with him. Good! It would have been fun to have nobody left to test mettle upon! The trees were threaded with ease, and by the end of it, with a small urge, he had the most marginal lead among them. His heart was beating wildly in his chest, his eyes flicking about him searching for the best way forwards. He had trouble behind him for sure... and he had never, ever, been in this situation before. Was this what it was like to be leading the rest of the pack? To have the incredible pressure of knowing that on your back alone laid the eyes of all those that sought to steal the key to victory from you?

Oh it was... so thrilling.

A brief glance back. A flash of devilish grin. "Let's go! Come and get me, I know you can!" So saying, he pitched to one side. It was most certainly time to expect the worst. He wouldn't expect anything less from this generation--competitive, vicious, and determined to win.

Just like him. And they were likely leaps and bounds more fortunate than he was in the realm of sheer luck. He wanted the danger. He wanted the challenge. He wanted to win and earn it, to take it with teeth digging deep and nails hooked tight in the flesh of triumph. What better way to do it than to outright tickle the sleeping dragon?

Oonagh breezed past the students, most of them anyway. She felt unbothered by the one's she left behind in the dust, her eyes on the prize, the bragging rights and her technique being a menace if someone crossed her. For now however she wanted to leave the weak ones behind, as she navigated past the spectators with ease. It truly was no challenge to her at all.

It was when they came to a narrow passageway that her skill was tested the most, as the stone-y walls scraped at her arms as she breezed through them as if nothing was going to bring her to a stop. Then again Oonagh was unstoppable. The only people still with her after she made it past a bunch of trees and branches, this time unfazed, was a couple of strangers and one familiar annoyance. "Oy, snowflake, shouldn't you be on the ground, crying by now?" She called out to the boy, who had been annoying her during summer. @Archer Duncan

However her mind was on the race, there was one student still left ahead of her and Oogie was determined to not be left behind by the guy, even though he seemed like he was quite comfortable, racing on the broom. But Oonagh had unwavering resolve that would surpass even that of the one in the current lead, @Piérre Marchonné.

The race was about to start.
Before Novalie could strike up a conversation about broom models or making bets, she heard someone yell 'GO!' and that was all she needed to hear. Without a second thought, the Metamorph leaned into her broom, speed kicking in as it surged forward. In that moment, she didn’t care about what was happening behind her at the starting line. All she cared about were the sea of spectators in front of her, and she had to weave through them.
Novalie zipped past them skillfully, dodging students with the ease of a breeze, each one a blur as she glided effortlessly through the crowd. It was all smooth sailing, until-
Wait - Where was Alyss?
Novalie glanced forward, then she quickly looked back over her shoulder, trying to spot her friend. But the Slytherin was nowhere to be seen. A moment later, her gaze shot upward, and she widened her eyes in surprise.
Alyss was the moderator?!
Sick!!
Still looking up and clearly being captivated by that little fact, Novalie failed to notice what was directly in front of her and of course, the inevitable had to happen.
"Wah!", the redhead yelped, crashing into yet another student! This one, however, was a total stranger.
Fortunately, the collision didn’t knock her off her broom. Novalie quickly regained control, glancing back at the person she’d just collided with.
"You’ve got to be careful where you stand!", she called out with a smirk, though she unconsciously slowed down as she spoke.

That brief hesitation and her not looking what's in front of her again were enough to send her flying straight into the wall of the narrow passageway that came next.
"Ah, damn it!", she cursed, feeling the cold stone wall slam into her shoulder.
The sharp pain shot through her, and she already knew she'd added another bruise to her collection. But as long as she didn’t hear the sickening crack of her broom (or her bones, which alarmingly wasn't quite her priority), she’d be fine.

Regaining her grip on the broom, the Ravenclaw let go with one hand and rotated her shoulder, trying to loosen it up as she spotted trees up ahead.
"Okay, focus focus!", she muttered to herself with an excited grin.
...
Oh!! Was that a squirrel?

Alyss took a deep breath, and continued her watching party. It took a lot out of her not to join in the race herself, just to get the feeling of the wind combing through her hair, the breathless feeling you get as you get filled with adrenaline. Fortunately for her, this would be a rather short race. Prior to the actual beginning, she had indicated a track, and it was roughly half the size of a usual broom racing track- but this race was for fun, so the shortened track was fine, right? “Are you all rooting for anyone in particular?” she called to the spectators that seemed to dot the viaduct as they watched the racers. It was thrilling, being able to take part- even if it was moderation- over such a fun and chaotic scene.

Both Colin and Aly took off, seemingly having accepted that the other would be too wiry for any attacks. This left them racing at the same speed. The only difference? The Ravenclaw seemed to be having a better time of the course than Colin was, something that made Alyss wince. Colin was going to be her teammate shortly, and any weakness he showed was a weakness of the team. What shocked her though, was the number of people that began to just sit there on their brooms. Perhaps they had made the mistake of looking up, and saw how far shared some of the other racers were. Either way, quite a few merely hovered above the ground instead of zipping through like a bumblebee.

The trees were yet again an obstacle that offered some of a challenge. Though the passageway prior to it was more difficult, the trees looked deceiving, which is the reason that they seemed to be a problem for the many that passed through, often achieving a whack from a branch- or in the bad cases- a trunk.

Now, the race was beginning to get interesting. “They enter the final stretch! Who will win it all?” Alyss called out, excitement mounting in her voice, and she guided her own broom closer to the action. The wind had picked up, but none of the racers let it bother them, eyes still set on the prize: right where they had begun, the viaduct.

FINISH LINE
Piérre passes the finish line and wins!
“And Piérre pulls ahead! It looks as if he’s going to make it- the victory is his!” Alyss declared grandly, throwing her arms up in the excitement. This had been an exciting race, and certainly one that she would remember. It was quite a few firsts for her, but it also proved to her that when on a good broom, even first years would get intensely close to the finish. Perhaps that would be her at her very first official race. For now, Alyss would fly her broom back to the viaduct, and land as gracefully as possible, eyeing the racers that had made it that far.
Round Outcome:

Piérre wins!

Colin laughed merrily as they took off for real. He shook his head and shoulders like a dog as he leaned into the wind rushing by! "Catch me if you can, sucker!" he shouted over to Aly! Now there was a lass who loved to race! "OWOOOOOOO!!" They charged through a narrow part of the track. Colin was flying flat out! "Mind the walls lassie!" he shouted.

A sudden change in direction seemed not to be on Vailerama's agenda. "WHOA! WALL AHEAD!" Colin cried. SCREEEEEE!!!

"Ooof!" Colin thudded off the wall, hip first, but kept up the breakneck pace!

"Coo, that's gonna leave a mark! --- In the wall!" Colin laughed, thoroughly enjoying himself. And as soon as they burst from the passage way, they made the sharp turn that led down through the trees! "YAAAA! Steady laddie!" Colin reminded himself. "We'll have no Colin impalements today!"

"WOOOOOO!!" Colin tipped this way then that way, avoiding trees like a pro --- until!

BANG!

Colin's shoulder smashed into a thick limb! "Good thing we're wearing padding, right Salinger!? See ye at the finish line or the hospital! RAVENCLOWNS FOR THE LOSE!!!!"

Bursting away from the trees, Colin easily zoomed along with the high winds before making the turn back onto the viaduct for the long final stretch! Hopefully none of the watchers would get in the way of the racers, as that could be a bit dangerous! he thought. Colin aimed Vailerama straight along the top of the viaduct and leaned in close to his shaft! He heard cheering from ahead. A couple of racers were ahead of Colin. He knew he wouldn't win, but he'd sure have a blast anyway! Captain Aly's voice called the winner!

PIERRE!!

Colin zoomed across the finish line at last, and slowed down. He called over to the girl who managed to keep up with him all the way: "Nice flying Salinger! Ye might make a good racer!" He flashed her a smirk before turning to find his friend Piérre. Leaping off Vailerama, he leapt up onto Arabella, crouched down and tackled the older Gryff in an exuberant hug. He leaned in, almost nose to nose! "WOOOOOOOOOOO!! PI!! Ye did it laddie!" He gave Piérre full fanged smile "Ye didn't die or anything! And ye won the First Annual Viaduct Race!"

Once the excitement died down a bit, Colin went off to find Emmi! He was super excited to see her! Once he caught sight of her, he charged over towards her at full speed! Dancing around her, his head bobbing and his hair dashing about in all directions, Colin flashed her his winningest smile! "EMMIIII!!! WASN'TTHATEXCITING? YESHOULDTOTALLYRACE!!" Colin was so eager to see her after the race that all of his words just jumbled together. Colin laughed. He reckoned she probably didn't catch more than half of what he said, but no matter!

"Emmi!! Come to Hogsmeade with me!" He took her hand and twirled her around in a little victory dance. "Wasn't the race brilliant! Pi won and everything! I'm happy for him!" Colin hoped Emily would say yes and go with him to Hogsmeade!

The entertained grin across Emily's face was hard to peel off as she watched Colin. He was acting absolutely daft on his broom as he zipped and swooped around the makeshift track. The boy leading the pack was still proving tough to beat though. There was undeniable experience oozing off of him judging by how he was racing. Fast and methodical.

Another piercing yell stole Emily's attention back towards Colin. He was going so fast that he almost splattered against a wall! She gasped and covered her eyes. Colin was a goner. And if not, then his hip bones certainly would be at the very least

"Be careful I said!" she called worriedly. Broom racers! They made Quidditch look like no more than a mere scratch sometimes!

But much like the rubber band he was, Colin bounced back into action and in no time flat he finished the race, coming in behind several racers ahead of him, the top dog being the older Gryffindor boy.

Emily applauded for everyone that crossed the finish line. "Woohoo!! Nice one!" She waved a quick Orchideous with her wand and tossed a conjured congratulatory flower towards the winner and another for Colin when he flew in to join the others back on the ground. Because one can never have too many flowers for something.

She beamed when Colin tackled his winning rival in good sportsmanship before he came zooming towards her with his gazelle legs. She laughed as he circled around her. Something fell out of his mouth at a thousand miles a second, the resulting babble of which only made Emily laugh harder.

"Emmi!! Come to Hogsmeade with me!"

"Eh?" Well that came out of nowhere! Emily was curious what Hogsmeade had to do with this. And then there was the fact that she couldn't go. Not really. Not when she was still five months away from being allowed to by the school.

She calmed down her giggle-fest and looked at Colin warmly, though her tone was a little on the firm side. "My friend. I'd love to go with you... But I'm still only a second year. It's still a while before I get to go on those trips to Hogsmeade like you and your older friends get to. And I break enough rules as it is sneaking out to places where I'm not supposed to". She lowered her voice on that last part.

Then an alternative popped into her head and her expression became hopeful. "But... I can compromise and come to Hogsmeade with you over the Easter break. My guardian and I can travel on the train and meet you there before we return for the summer term. What do you think?"

Being Muggle-born meant a lot of planning in advance when it came to hanging out in the Wizarding World. Without Floo and brooms, Emily always got worked up when it came to travelling. But she would worry about the nitty gritty of getting to Hogsmeade later. What mattered now was of Colin would agree on her idea or not.

Maisie seemed to Evelynn a tad surprised to have been addressed, her response almost stuttered in its delivery. It was affirmative all the same and the elder Gryffindor offered a polite smile, glad to have recalled the junior's name correctly. Her head canted slightly, curiously, to one side as the eaglette offered clarification of a race. "I see," Evelynn remarked simply, eye following the direction of the girl's indication towards one McCoire. "Mn." A silver gaze had flicked back to @Maisie Gemmell as she went on to suggest Evelynn could join. Lips had parted with intention to consider the suggestion, but it seemed it was too late. "Ah, well. Best of luck, then." The girl was already off and the racers already set up. Perhaps next time.

Wand out in preparation to aid in any recovery efforts should things go south with the racers, Evelynn glanced about. She caught a smile looking her way, and returned it, casually making her way through the thin throng of spectators to come along-side the girl. "Miss Shepherd," she greeted quietly. "It has been some time." In truth, the elder Gryffindor had become something of a recluse over the winter months. Like a predatory cat emerging more prominently as their prey proliferated during Spring, Evelynn really hadn't started treading through the general student populous again until the months had started warming. "Have you been well?" She side-eyed @Emily Shephard with a subtly scrutinizing glance. "No further incidents, I hope?"

Oonagh roared as she neared the finish line, there was no one ahead of her but one. Her eyes were glued to his back, as she leaned forward, almost becoming one with the broom. She was going to catch up, or so she thought. So her mind demanded as her grip on the broom handle tightened and her shoulders tensed. The boy, @Piérre Marchonné she would eventually learn, only a small leap away. "Let's go! Come and get me, I know you can!" The almost sing-song voice of the boy taunting her as he called back. She got close to him, close enough for her to taste the victory on her lips, only for her hopes to crumble apart, when the older boy passed the finish line.

Anger flared almost immediately at that, her eyes still focused on the boy. However she did not give in. Her broom not slowing down as she crashed her shoulder into the boy's side. The impact of which was probably hurting herself almost as much as it had hopefully hurt him. Her own shoulder arm would surely bruise from the impact at the very least. But what was one more bruise to add to the existing ones. She was far too energetic, climbing on trees and sometimes buildings if possible, to worry about another bruise in the collection.

Only now after making the connection, painfully, did she bring her broom to an abrupt stop to glare at the winner of this race, almost baring her teeth like an angered cat before she spoke. "A guess A got ye," she hissed, if there was ever a repetition of this, she would ensure to crush that boy beneath the heels of her boots or whack him off his stupid broom.
