For the most part, Quidditch was fun. The adrenaline spikes, the rush, the constant strategizing, and the overwhelming satisfaction when a play went off. Not only that, but it was an excellent way to release pent-up energy. Yes, Quidditch was fun, and these were likely common explanations as to why students tried out for their respective house teams.

So while Aodhan would definitely agree, the fact remained that his reasons for enjoying the sport... did not exactly lie in the sport itself.

After all, he could easily find these things elsewhere. If he wished to strategize, he could play chess. If he wanted adrenaline, he could choose to enter dueling. If he wanted satisfaction, well, that wasn't hard to come by; he could annoy someone to the point of a job well done in his books. It wasn't hard at all.

But in Quidditch, there was a certain position that carried the weight of the world on their shoulders. In some ways, they could completely steal the show, put an end to some endless back and forth match, should they simply do one thing: catch the snitch.

In Quidditch, there were seekers, and Aodhan had the incredible luck needed skills to become a second-string seeker for his team. The star. The hero. The MVP should he enter the pitch and actually perform, and that kind of momentary spotlight was something he craved. A vision he wished to—no, a vision he would bring to life by any means necessary. Thus, could anyone blame him for thinking ahead and getting in some extra flying practice?

He was a decent flyer for his age group, even more so considering his non-magical background. Unfortunately, decent was not good enough, not for him. There were so many things he wanted to do! Like stand upright on his broom while in midair, or perhaps nail a couple loops here and there. Maybe even hang upside down from his broom instead while catching a snitch? That would be incredible.

For the time being, though, he was stuck failing to emulate these supposed tricks while on his Nimbus 1001. This was especially true for the whole "standing upright" idea, as he was struggling to maintain his balance, much less fully stand on the damn thing. Anyone could spot Aodhan slowly moving through the air, and wobbling, as he tried planting both feet onto the slim piece of wood.

Ever since Astra first laid a hand on a broom, she was addicted to flying. The skies held promises of risk and reward, of adventurous thrill, of the honey-sweet nectar called freedom. It accepted the young viper no matter if the humans on the ground did or not. Regardless of her sins, no matter her heroics, the sky greeted her as it greeted all: open and impartial. It rained on the angels as much as the devils. And that was something Astra could appreciate.

Flying time took up a fair bit of her schedule, but doubly so since joining the broom racing team and earning a broom of her own. Albany the Nimbus 1700 was a hardy fellow. Polished and sleek from painstaking care, he was really the most looked after item in her inventory, he glowed from Slytherin's recent win. Maybe he flew better, or she was more confident, but in either case the joyous practice was all the more euphoric. And all the more challenging as she pushed herself to greater heights. Literally.

And, as luck might have it for a certain lion cub, figuratively. Although a lot of broom racing involved holding on till your fingers were stuck that way and praying, team practices and Astra's own air time did involve some showing off. Tricks and the like. Astra particularly enjoyed emulating a rollercoaster with barrel rolls and loop-the-loops frequently punctuating her flight path, and quick switch high speed maneuvers never rare. But less frequent were tricks that did not involve straddling the broom or having at least one hand on it. Sure she was decent sidesaddle, and could definitely hold her own if she found herself hanging off of the broomstick by her hands.

As Astra came out to the pitch to fly, she saw him. She took Albany for a few slow laps, getting faster each time high up in the air, saw the young boy lift one foot then the other and slowly wobble forth, standing upright for one, two, three seconds.

Inspiration struck.

Perhaps the lion would not be the only one embarrassed trying to stand on his broom.

She swooped down a distance away, using the descent to slow a little. She didn't want to spook him into falling and getting hurt. Then, slowly, she circled around. With great caution and extreme care, one sneakered foot planted itself on the back half of the broom. Albany rocked. She shushed him, soothing-like. Then the other sneakered foot inched onto the front half. And then, upright.

She was facing the boy now. She offered a smile and wave before circling her arms wildly to keep balance as her foot tilted Albany wildly to the side. "Hell, I reckon I should've tried a skateboard before this," she blurted as she regained her balance. "A lot shorter to fall."

Aodhan's attention span was a chaotic little thing, often working against him rather than with him. But thankfully, its fickle nature still meant there was potential for some good, the kind that apparently let him take notice of a red-headed new arrival.

Her presence caused him to peer at her curiously, a lone brow raised as he knelt to grab his broom with a single hand. His feet were still planted on the wood, because he wasn't a complete wuss. However, he very much didn't want to make a complete fool of himself by losing balance while unfocused. Not so soon.

The youth was pleasantly surprised, though, upon spotting the girl steadily copy his own balancing attempt. Then there was her disarming smile, one that he couldn't possibly refrain from returning. Was she trying to join in?

"Hell, I reckon I should've tried a skateboard before this. A lot shorter to fall."

He instantly laughed in response, already rising back to nearly full height, though not without a bit of trouble.

"Yeah, but this is more exciting, isn't it?" he questioned, his smile growing wider, "Like, you absolutely have to get it right, or you get fu—AHHH!"

There was a decent chance the universe despised him to some degree, for a small shift in his footing led to a complete fumble. Before he could fully process what was happening, Aodhan found himself falling, the ground approaching at a rapid pace... for exactly one second.

And it was truly only a second because he managed to miraculously save himself, tumbling in a way that allowed the back of his knee to catch onto the wood of his broom. His broom had already stopped moving in the process, leaving him dangling like an obnoxious holiday ornament. Yes, maybe the universe despised him, because couldn't it just wait before letting this happen? As soon as the fear died down and his cries quieted, he knew he'd have to play this off.

So, with his vision upside down and the blood rushing to his head, he looked at the girl and smiled.

"Hah! Gotcha there, didn't I?" he spoke with a relatively stable chuckle, even though anyone paying attention could notice he was a bit winded. "Good thing I have this under control."

He was a bold faced liar.

Summoning as much nonchalance as possible, he pulled himself into a proper sitting position on his Nimbus, ignoring his racing heartbeat and trembling in his arms. He was fine. Completely fine.
