How did a calm debate on History of Magic evolve into a near personal vendetta against Hufflepuff? It was difficult to tell if this Slytherin girl was being snarky, blunt, sugar-coating, all three or none at all. What did she mean that most Hufflepuffs were annoying? What about some of the other ones in their year together? What about the older ones that were on the sports teams? Were they really that aggravating to her? She certainly seemed to lack any joy from talking with Emily, so maybe she wasn't trying to hide anything. Still, Emily hardly found Hufflepuff to be an "annoying" House to be a part of. As a Hufflepuff herself, she found their company to be very enjoyable! Maybe it was jealousy, but this Slytherin student could learn to embrace a little sweetness for once in her life if she was being so bitter about Hufflepuff.
And whether or not she was being sincere about Emily being the exception, Emily didn't really appreciate trying to be baited so that she might see her in a good light. "I hope you actually mean that and not saying it just for the sake of it. If you truly think all Hufflepuffs are annoying then it's hard to find value in me being exempt from that statement..."
Emily made some nice acquaintances with a few other Slytherin students but she had never come across one so disengaged and disinterested like this girl before. Was this something that lay underneath Slytherin? That wasn't something Emily was hoping, but the House was known to value those more... Prideful and self-preserving.
"Some of you Slytherin folk can be quite... Opinionated. Sometimes."
Emily still had enough awareness not to be spiteful or take offence, but it was still in her interest to try and persuade two things; that History of Magic was cool and that Hufflepuff was more sweetheart driven than obnoxious, as this girl was trying to argue.

Emily couldn't make heads or tails with this girl and her opinions. There was a lot of ebbing and flowing with what she was saying. Emily wasn't looking for special treatment just because she was in Hufflepuff and coincidentally sitting right beside her. If this girl was going to have an opinion, she ought to just come out and say it, like how Emily was going to show hers right then and there.
"I'm just observing," she said. "It sounds like a lot of highly respected people get sorted into Slytherin and they all appear to have rather set-in-stone kind of ways. That's the air I get anyway. I might be wrong."
Now, about the clinginess thing. Emily was a cuddly person. A teddy bear in human form. She cuddles Scout when she sees her no matter the circumstance. She cuddles Casey when he's in one of his foul moods whenever they're together. She'll cuddle any pet that's within her radius regardless of the critter. In Emily's case, maybe there was a little bit of truth to the statement, but Emily wouldn't call it clingy per se. Just-- Overly affectionate.
But that didn't mean everyone in Hufflepuff was clingy. Or did it? Emily was probably too busy either either studying or snugging to notice!
"I guess if we really do follow a stereotype, then I'm proud to be seen as loyal and friendly, or as you put it, 'clingy'. I'd rather be along those lines than be something else completely. Not that I thought you were cunning to begin with or anything, but I'm sure we're both a little more than what our houses tell us about ourselves, right?"

Emily frowned. She had a feeling this was where the conversation would lead to and sure enough, it got there. This girl was the first Slytherin - and actually the first person in general - to scratch against Emily's post the wrong way. There just seemed to be no winning with her!
Emily's cheeks puffed irritably as she withheld the urge to talk back, unless this girl was asking for a good long tongue lashing... Which she very nearly was.
She took a steady breath, her tone remaining soft with an underlying lace of fight back as she processed what to carefully say next. "I never said I was 'special', so I'm unsure as to where you got that from. And might I politely suggest you associate yourself with more people outside of Slytherin? Maybe then you'll see that there are more layers to those like Hufflepuff that are beyond more than "annoying" as you allegedly claimed".
She straightened up so that she was facing the front of the room, shuffling her books until they were aligned in the same way she was. "Congratulations for not losing a single debate then. Sounds like you'd excel in a debate club. But I don't think there's any harm in branching out and seeing things in a new angle. You don't even have to agree with a point of view, but it's interesting to see things through a different lens, no?"
She opened her textbook and pulled out a few sheets of parchment, arming herself with a quill.
"Now I hope you don't mind, but I'd like to pay attention to today's lesson, please and thank you. Thank you for an enlightening talk".

The Huffie would give this girl credit where it was due. She got fire. An admirable quality. It definitely boded for the Slytherin's favour when Emily was pervious to intimidation and challenges. She was built too soft and squishy to be facing that.
"I suppose I did come off a little too strongly back there..." she admitted, conceding to the Slytherin girl. "Just know that there are as many kinds of people as there are Houses of Hogwarts... Well, more than four actually-- But you get my point".
Emily cringed saying that. Not that she didn't mean it. She did. It was a little hard to apologise when the two were fizzing to the point of nearly blowing up on one another. It was more so that she felt she shouldn't have said anything at all. Sometimes saying more would make things less easy, something Emily was starting to worry she had just done.
Emily drifted back down to her textbook once the class picked up. She whispered very quietly over to her. "You're not all that bad, really... Just a little headstrong. Not that that's a bad thing or anything... Sorry... No hard feelings".
When she got no response back, Emily took it as a sign that there was nothing more to say between them. Probably for the best, for now at least. A little kerfuffle over Houses. Of all the things that could rile a student up in a school of magic, it had to be something as small as that.
