Fancies were fleeting just as feelings, and passions grew and wilted faster than winter's approach. Astra suddenly found herself bored to tears the moment December hit. A passionate youth such as herself should have no trouble amusing herself with the novelties of magical life. Her problem was not lack of activities, but rather lack of new activities. People watching, an activity formerly lent upon in dire hours such as these, was hard now. Once noticed, which was not very hard given her rather bright coloration and relative notoriety, it was nigh on impossible to melt back into the shadows away from hard and unforgiving eyes. So thus Astra kept to herself far more often than not especially when compared to her first year of personal exploration. Her network truly only consisted of her brother, Piérre whom she clung to almost parasitically, and her kindred spirit Mahlioz. She still didn't entirely know where she stood with others, and she wasn't sure she wanted to most days. Her violin stared sadly at her from the corner of her dormitory, but the sheet music blurred if she looked at it for more than a minute, and the same went for piano. Unsurprisingly, she'd read all the books she'd brought with her. And though the pursuit of knowledge was endless, words blurred together, too.

Thus, the viper had decided to use her time in what many could and indeed would consider a meaningless way: testing the radius of the Cascading Jinx. Throughout the room, objects of little importance that could be fixed with Reparo quite simply were strewn: pens, pieces of paper, candies she didn't quite like. Astra called Hermes safely behind her before fixing her aim on a chair she'd set on one of the desks. "Alrighty, here goes. Ingens Explosiones!" Let the sparks fly, baby.

xxxxxxxx𝕰vpraksiya was two seconds away from committing another murder.

Her composure had been wearing thin and shredded against the nigh constant, unblinking gaze of high society for the entirety of winter break. Spindly fingers tap-tap-tapping against her porcelain mask, searching their way across the smooth surface for any cracks to dig into and tear out tender vermillion secrets buried in the back hidden nook of a garden flowering in the dead of winter countless miles away.

Thus, while hiding away in an abandoned classroom was certainly not respectable for a Vinogradov from the main family, she’d been reduced to scuttling into the forgotten room like some sort form of vermin.

How the mighty fall, hm?

The abandoned classroom was colder than expected. Dust clung to the high arches of the ceiling, and the stale scent of forgotten parchment lingered in the air, but Evpraksiya found it preferable to the alternative— a crowded common room with too many voices and too little peace.

It was… unpleasant to interact with people after Winter break. Hogwarts had too many eyes, too many whispers beneath the surface, pressing against her skin until the cool satin of her gloves felt horrifically similar to the lacquered wood of a shovel handle. Truly, there was only so much polite conversation she could suffer before the feeling of insects crawling beneath her skin stirred back to life, relentless and unyielding as they buried themselves into veins and tendons. The only true reprieve came with Meiushka— the girl who's eyes she caught in between aerial sprays of bright red rubies— alone and tucked away in the serene dark of the dormitory, where the weight of eyes was lightened between the two of them, and silence hummed like a sweet lullaby in the night’s air.

The sharp sting against her shoulder yanked her from her thoughts with the force of a physical slap. A pen bounced off her shoulder and clattered to the floor at her feet, the offending object spinning in a tight circle before coming to a rather abrupt stop. Evpraksiya’s gaze darkened as her hand flicked instinctively to release her wand from its holster into her waiting hand. Again, here?— Her chin jerked upward, composure teetering precariously on the edge of unraveling as agitation bloomed beneath her skin. For a single instant, the quiet hum of the room seemed to swell into a deafening roar, and the heat curling in her chest sharpened with the distinct taste of rage as, in moments, she wasn’t in the classroom anymore but in the shadows of a house fresh in her memory.

Was it any surprise then, that the girl cast before she realized what happened?

Tarantallegra! left her lips with all the speed of a rabbit sprinting away from a hungry wolf, realization coloring her eyes an instant too late as she watched the spell leave her wand.

Astra threw her arms over her head and ducked down. Items went flying in a shower of sparks. The second year student peeked through the fiery hair in her face and surveyed the destruction. "Hm. Not half bad." It had a decent radius. She reached to her side for a notepad and pen to begin formal observations.

"Tarantallegra!" The incantation flew totally out of left field straight at Astra. She should've been quicker to react, but the spell had caught her off-guard, and now she was dancing some sort of salsa she thought. Maybe. Astra wasn't well versed in dance.

"Jesus, what- finite incantatem!" Her shield shape was wobbly, but it did the trick and her legs ceased moving on their own accord. Astra righted herself, sneakered feet finding balance after a quick scrabble across the stone floor. She brushed non-existent dust off her green jumper and her gaze settled on the dainty figure from which the spell had come. Like a furious porcelain doll with a thin black wand raised, clutched in an offensive grip, the blonde girl stood. To Astra, the girl was unfamiliar. "Now what have I done to piss you off?" Not that Astra was well-liked by any means, but that the "attacks of vengeance" had ceased by October and now her quarrels were on a matter of personal anger, inconvenience, displeasure, et cetera.

From the girl to her general surroundings Astra's focus shifted as she reached for her notepad once more, and there she found the object of the other's offense. "Oh, did that pen hit you? Sorry. Wasn't expecting company." Wasn't much more to say. She recorded her first observation, the location and condition a plastic chess bishop which had somehow found it's way out of the set at the local library and into her backpack on one of her many trips there over the years. A thought occurred to her. She looked up from the bishop. "It wasn't uncapped or broken, was it? Hasn't stained your sleeve?"
