𝓗ad Haven's plea to be spared injury painted her as an obvious target? Perhaps. Did Evelynn feel a small shred of remorse for directing her assault towards her bubbly peer? A tad. Was that enough to sway her to hold back? Most certainly not. Although had Evelynn known in the moment that she would be fated to spend the week at Beauxbatons in the same sleeping quarters as the badger, perhaps she might have altered course for sake of self-preservation.

As it was, however, Evelynn seemed to find her stride. Initial momentum had definitely swung in favour of the lions--an experience that none of the three was greatly familiar. There was something distinctly empowering about seeing ones' opponents placed immediately on the defensive without sustaining so much as a returning scratch. Confidence breeds confidence, and for once, the Gryffindors seemed to be on the same page, each of their spells converging to empower the others. Like lions in a pride, they triangulated their efforts to pick out a singular opponent, sever them from their support, and inflict devastating ruin.

Not even Springhall's return fire would deter her. Evelynn spun lithely away from it with a feline grace, using the motion to stir her own conjured winds into a stronger front. There was no denying the feeling of power, the sense of absolute control and self-assertion of years of study finally coming to fruition. A small voice spoke up, warning her against its allure. She threw that caution to the winds. As the dark cloud repositioned to cast its shadow over the Hufflepuff team, Evelynn couldn't help but stand a little taller, cheeks creasing with a smile that didn't quite meet her eyes.

This was, from Lea's calculations, in no way going well for the Hufflepuffs so far. While Gryffindors had succeeded in their onslaught of spells, the badgers found no such luck as streaks of light exploded against stone instead. While attacking seemed an option best for once things felt more under control- whenever that would be- aiding her teammates seemed least likely to be interfered with. With her wand directed towards herself with an angling to Haven, Lea would mutter the words of the Healing Spell with barely enough vigor to feel some life return to her. It was like a breath of fresh air and while the cuts and bruises were still there with their pulsing pain, at least her vision seemed a little clearer. "Let's keep the nap to after please, surely a bed would be more comfortable. Are you- doing alright?"

There was something so satisfying about casting a trip jinx and watching your teammates' spells land. Somehow it almost felt better than landing a hit yourself. It could be argued that their spells would have landed anyway. Both Meenauh and Evelynn were talented duelists, but he still felt some of the credit was owed to him - just as Meenauh was owed credit for helping him hit Lea in the opening move. Now they had to just hope supporting each other would continue to bring about such success.

When Haven said that she was supposed to aim for the other team, Lindsey wearily nodded. “I know it too.” She answered, quietly and apologetically, lowering her head and trying to calm down. Retaking her stance, she gripped her wand tight, making up her mind to take it back the next spell.

Her hopes were shattered. The Impediment Jinx was successfully cast, but Decipio easily stepped out of the way, while her own split-into-two Wind Jinx unexpectedly splut again and caught both Lindsey and Haven in a whirlwind. Lindsey groaned, jumping aside with much intuited alert to avoid the radius of Silmataurea’s Cracker Jinx, rather disappointed by the outcome. The Gryffindors remained unharmed, while they badgers were all exhausted in some way. It’s still the very beginning. Lindsey bit her lips, silently telling herself so.

Haven tried to brush her hair out of her face, wincing as her fingers touched her broken skin. The Lions had not been kind to her. She was still trying to catch her breath and was trying not to bleed out all over the piste, and she likely looked like a crazed pygmy puff. Like Marcus! Haven did think that was a bit funny though, and started giggling aloud, even though everyone else there probably had no clue what she was giggling at, which only made her laugh even harder.

"Thank you, Lea," she said to her badger teammate about the heal between giggles. Healing. Health insurance. That was such a funny thing. She would be needing a lot of band aids after this. Maybe she should get out the Strawberry Shortcake ones to match the cake she was promised! Haven was such a great idea maker. She could only hope the same could be said about her spellwork.

A clear strategy had emerged from the Gryffindors and it seemed like the Hufflepuffs had caught on and were beginning to utilize it for themselves. Meenauh and Lea turned their wands on each other. The lion's cast was successful and Lea began stumbling backwards. Trying to follow suit and give Meenauh a taste of her own medicine, Lea attempted the same but ultimately failed to garner enough power to produce any magic. The bad luck would not stop there for Hufflepuff. Before she had a chance to cast, Haven felt some kind of tingle at the base of her brain. Knowingly or unknowingly, depending on Haven’s association with the lion, Evelynn’s wand found its moment to disrupt her opponent. This manifested in another failed cast from the badgers, without Haven being able to garner any magic at all.

Lindsey and Evelynn were locked in a Cracker Jinx showdown and Pyxis believed that Lindsey had stolen all the luck from her allies. The Hufflepuff’s crackers were perfectly placed, and not one of the lions were able to avoid it. Meenauh was hit dead-on, caught in the center of the conjured toys. Galton and Evelynn were more quick on their feet, but still, Lindsey’s crackers were simply inescapable. Evelynn had a pretty terrible time against the Hufflepuffs who smoothly avoided the explosions despite the fact that they were bogged down by being tripped up and blasted by wind. Satisfied with the effects of the previous wind spell, it was Galton’s turn to conjure up a wind storm and he directed it towards Lea. It slammed into the already aching Hufflepuff, hampering the movement of her legs.

It seemed the Hufflepuffs wanted to utilise what they were doing. He heard the Trip Jinx, and the Crackers. It seemed no one tripped on their side, unlike on the Hufflepuffs.

The Crackers, though, went straight into her, which she hated. In the whole mess of everything, she didn't even understand clearly who hit whom, but Evelynn seemed to become quite disorientated with her own spell hitting her. Yes, the spell had consequences rarely, but unfortunately that was that time.

Now they have to come up with something to make up for this temporary mishap.

First Lea, then Haven. It seemed that they had bestowed their respective luck upon her—while her teammates’ spells somehow didn’t work, the crackers she sent across the stage exploding everywhere and no opponent was spared. Finally. A taste of victory, albeit small, especially when all of them managed to deftly duck the blows of another Cracker Jinx returned by the Gryffindors as a salute. Lindsey nodded to herself. Things were starting to take a turn for the better.

It always hurt to get a dose of your own medicine. But when someone has aim like that? You can cope a little by thinking "Well surely there was no way I'd ever have dodged that" even if you probably could have. But the first taste of pain always made the true dueling-adrenaline going. Or maybe that was the endorphins... Either way - Galton couldn't help but grin wider.
