History of Magic was one of the favorite class subject of Norena. She was born in South Korea and when she moved in England, her parents wanted her to learn the history of her home country and some Muggle history of England, but not wizarding history. This class therefore allowed her to get to know the world to which she now belonged.

The only problem was that sometimes the class was boring. Even though the material was new, she had trouble staying awake in some classes. She wanted the hubbub, the chaos, the drama, those three things she loved but all seemed to be gone by now.

So the young Korean came, a little exasperated by the pattern that repeated itself in each class; learning and homework. She had no goal this morning, she didn't want to create chaos but there you go, the young people in her class were quite unpredictable.

Norena pushed open the door of the classroom and sat in the back of the class, as usual, and little by little, the other students entered. Nore was always one of the first student to enter the class. She didn't focus on her books or the teacher who was waiting, but on the faces of the students in the class. She didn't stare at them but she gradually remembered everything that could happen with eleven-year-olds in a class that was starting to get boring as the days went by. It was going to be a long hour.

Speech -- Thoughts

Pam really disliked History of Magic.

It did not help that she has always found History to be dreadfully boring, no matter what font it was in. As far as she was concerned, it was still better than how she had suffered in her muggle school, at least, they were still learning some spells here. Unfortunately for her, there was still a lot of sitting and listening to their teacher talk. Also unfortunately for her, Pam knew for a fact that she could do good in the subject if she bothered to sit herself down to study it properly.

Sitting down to study it proved close to impossible for her though.

Pam would often wonder why exactly she would even bother to attend the class in the first place. After all, most of the things they learnt could easily be found in the library books. Pam always spent a lot of time holed up in there. However, years of being taught to not miss classes in her previous school seemed to be finally rubbing off on her.

So, it was yet another morning to deal with yet another History class. Pam followed a crowd of fellow first years into the class, as always staying far away from the big ugly scary gargoyle which guarded the door. She wasn't really sure why their teacher had thought it was a good idea to have one, or the necessity for it, but Pam wasn't going to be questioning it anytime soon.

Pam liked to pick a seat near the middle of the class. In her opinion, it was a smart choice. The first benches were simply scary, mainly because of its proximity to the teacher. As for the last benches, well, too much at the back also drew unwanted attention. And Pam was all about being inconspicuous. She sighed, resting her head on her palm and watching her classmates pile in. Best hope I don't fall asleep.

If someone bothered to ask Aurelia what her favourite subject taught at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was, she would have gone into a spiral to explain why she adored Potions, Transfigurations, and especially History of Magic. This subject made her feel like she belonged all along, that she had lived in this world long before she was born, only separated by the consequences of time, perhaps numbers, notwithstanding that her soul may have burrowed within the confines of the Wizarding World. It made her feel like she didn't live in Muggle London, like it was a different girl more than who she is right now. Knowing about this world made her think that this is it, this is her; that girl back in Croydon is long dead.

Aurelia visibly jumped when she saw the statue of the gargoyle owned by Professor Lennox, Asdrúbal, just sitting near the entrance of the History of Magic classroom. Five months have passed since Professor Lennox introduced this certain gargoyle to them on the first day of classes; however, the young badger will never be able to get used to his presence. He particularly looked like a monster she had read about in grim fairytales when she was young—what a weird phase of her life; it made her extremely paranoid for months—and exposure to it forced her to recollect memories of sketches and illustrations she had seen from the said fairytale.

With a hesitant look in her deep brown eyes, the young badger moved forward towards the wooden double doors of the History of Magic classroom, her Mary Janes clicking against the marbled corridors. When Asdrúbal turned his big, bad, horned head towards her instead, she flinched, her palm immediately flying to her chest. “You’re not going to smack me, are you?” Aurelia tentatively asked, slinging her enchanted satchel over her shoulder as her eyes shifted on the double doors and the gargoyle itself. His unblinking red eyes were perfectly burnt in her mind, like haunting headlights of a speedy car gushing through the wind and in the middle of nowhere. “Say, you look very nice today,” she managed to choke out, nodding her head as though convincing herself that the gargoyle really looked particularly nice, even if she was sure he would be haunting her dreams that night. “Did you do something with your... Er...” she assessed his entirety, nodding her head, sucking her breath in as she gestured with her hands, “...your bat-like wings, perhaps?” Aurelia managed to squeak out. When Asdrúbal turned to his wings to assess it himself, the young Hufflepuff witch ran and pushed the double doors open, huffing out the breath she purposefully held.

If there's something Aurelia is proud about, it is her punctuality and diligence. She was never late for her classes, she passed her homework in time, and she follows through on her plans and to-do lists for the day. September had been a struggle, of course, with how the Hogwarts castle is remarkably massive, and its sentience had been aware enough in order to move rooms in different locations. However, she managed to memorise all the ways, the shortcuts by passing through multiple portraits in the Tapestry Corridor, to avoid traps laid in the Grand Staircase. By this method, she manages to always be earlier than the supposed or recommended time.

Noticing that there were only a single-digit number of students in the classroom—six, an even number—she sighed in evident relief. Aurelia ran her hands on the sleeves of her Hufflepuff robes, as if to smoothen out the nonexistent wrinkle of her already perfectly pressed uniform; her chin lifted slightly up high as she moved towards the front row, self-importance oozing from her entire being, this haughty attitude reflecting in her purposeful strides. She carefully put down her enchanted leather satchel on one of the front seats, her deep brown eyes scouring the room. When she saw Pamela Graham, the blonde Hufflepuff with whom she played Wizard's Chess last week, she gave her a gracious smile in greeting before settling down in her seat.

Withdrawing her copy of A History of Magic along with a roll of parchments as well as her inkwell and grey quill, she placed them neatly on her desk before cracking the textbook open to the necessary lesson for today. While filling up her inkwell with newly bought ink, she wondered if Ruth Fairchild would sit next to her. Let's just face it: the brunette Hufflepuff witch is the closest Aurelia has as a friend, and it would be really nice if they were seated together. Of course, sitting near Graham would be particularly nice too, but Aurelia liked sitting in front where she could hear Professor Lennox's voice clearly, and she could participate efficiently in the front without any possible distractions.

Such a big castle, but still so cramped! For some reason, no matter when or where, she was doomed to lose her way due to the large number of students rushing to their classes.

Pushing and struggling, Amelia walked ahead, determined, trying to walk forward rather than being swept into another class, resisting the steady flow of students going in the opposite direction.

If only she had stayed focused, she wouldn't have lost the group she was counting on to lead her, knowing they were on their way to the classroom next to hers. She knew the way, but a little help clearing the corridor was always appreciated, even if it was unintentional.

Well, no use in contemplating it now. Amelia took every chance she had to go forward, and at last, she reached the classroom: history of magic. Her heart sped up as she spotted the gargoyle statue; her pace quickened with the urge to pass it. As she reached the entrance, she nodded to it in acknowledgement and made her way inside quickly, sprinting to a seat, somewhere in the middle of the class.

Out of breath and distracted by it, she didn't even notice where she sat— next to Pam. They hadn't talked much recently, but Amelia was sure they were still on good terms. She smiled at her friend, mumbled a breathless hello, then refocused on catching her breath.

𝓐h, History of Magic.

Ruth Fairchild had mixed feelings about the class.

It wasn’t as simple as claiming to hate, dislike, like or love attending lessons to learn about the history of magic. She enjoyed History, yes, and learning about the wizarding world did make her feel more at ease here. However, she had…also gotten an E in the class, one of her firsts, to which she was unable to mask her disappointment. The Witch Trials, too! Ruth particularly liked that lesson. The Era piqued Ruth’s interest, especially since she had deemed the burnings to be superstition rather than true, as she found out now. Moreover, it was fascinating to have known how magicals that were caught were able to save themselves through Flame Freezing Charm. Having learnt about Wandelin the Weird, she even found herself looking through her chocolate frog collections that night.

So…imagine her devastation of getting lower than expected of her.

And it was so ridiculous, for she had sorely missed Outstanding by a single point. It left the girl fuming, and ever since then she couldn’t sit right. Often, Ruth found herself almost drifting off into sleep just by sitting there. When she caught herself doing so, Ruth resisted the temptation to continue dozing off. She couldn’t afford more Es, no matter how much better they are from Ts…or As….For a reader, it was her pride to see a continuous knowledge streak within her subjects, and little mistakes that tainted her report caused her to sniff in dismay.

As she walked into the class, hand gripping onto her A History of Magic book, Ruth was determined to survive through the class without her head dipping, posture slouching, eyes dropping, day dreaming. Glancing around, it proved to be difficult to overcome the urge to drop unconscious. Not everyone seemed eager to be there, particularly the cascading curls of Pam, who Ruth waved at lazily. She knew of how much her best friend despised the class, and could only wish her the best.

Her eyes trailed to the seat beside her, having wanted to perhaps accompany the girl, but realised it was occupied by someone else. Amelia, was it? Ruth couldn’t really remember. She often took memorising people through their unique traits and memorable events, and Amelia had provided her with none so far. Ruth had, however, seen her walking around with Pam, so would presume her to be one of Pamela’s friends.

She walked closer to the front of the class, spotting unruly curls peeking up from in front of the two girls. Ah. Aurelia Valentine. Ruth smiled fondly, her steps a little lighter, now that she had someone smart to sit next to. Maybe Aurelia would stop her from dozing off, or not. Ruth wasn’t too sure. While her ways were quite robotic and straightforward, the young Fairchild found the Hufflepuff before her strangely unpredictable and could only hope for the best.

If not, maybe something interesting was bound to happen to stop her from falling asleep.
