Calming Presence is in affect
Affected by it: Amber Frost Hart
Kaya was distracted by the creature near Amber. It scared her. The way it was so close was making Kaya angry. Anger at herself and Amber. She was too distracted. A mistake. A blurry motion and Kaya got attacked by the Hidebehind. She didn't have time to evade the attack that came her way all too fast. Faster. She had to be faster and stay focused. But there was no way for her to be faster. She was annoyed. They were just like toys for the Hidebehind, and Kaya knew all too well: they had to get out. Maybe some time later they would return. More prepared, and maybe they will even be able to damage this creature that was toying with them. Enjoying their fear.
Kaya was relieved to see that Amber got her wand and that her own spell gave them light. A brilliant sunbeam forced the creature to reveal its true form. A bear-like, silver-haired, it was now more intimidating than before. This form couldn't compare with what she saw before. Light was enough to make it stunned. But she was scared and injured and could see her hands trembling. Kaya had to maintain this light. It seemed to help them even if only a little.
How long could Kaya maintain this light? She only hoped it could be long enough for them to escape. A safe place. They needed a safe place to heal and take their breath. Outside the forest or within it didn't matter to Kaya. She simply dreamed of any possible safe place for them. Kaya looked at Amber in time to see her bestie looking at her.
A moment before sprinting. Or rather trying to run and move through the pain of all the injuries that the creature gave them. Kaya started to run too. It wasn't the fastest running ever, but never before did she want to survive and see Amber survive as well. Why was her bestie here? She should have never come. Kaya shouldn't have thought that she was prepared. Forced to run away searching for a safe place meant she wasn't prepared. But if Kaya didn't come today, she wasn't sure she would see Amber again. How interesting things turn out to be. All the previous years were so calm and without any worry. Now it was worrisome every new day. New doubts, new fears. Kaya could never imagine she would face a situation where she was so worried about Amber. Kaya was adventurous; she was a fighter. Even now she was enjoying this adventure. She knew exactly that this wouldn't stop her from coming back later.
Something suddenly caught her by surprise. Spell for a fire? What did Amber want to do? However, she didn't voice her question. Running was hard enough, and she needed to keep her breath as steady as possible. Just get to a safe place; that's all she needed. A fire. It was an interesting idea to try to set the place on fire as they were running away. Maybe it could help? Did the Hidebehind burn? Could it be damaged by it? Those were very intriguing questions, and she wanted to know.

You two may need an adult.
The forest roared to life behind them as Amber’s Incendio Duo took hold, not of the Hide Behind but rather the dry leaves of the forest floor. Flames crackling and consuming the dry underbrush with unnatural speed, the Hide Behind was unharmed by the revealing light of Amber's spell, but it could not use the gloom to its advantage any longer. The firelight danced erratically, casting long, flickering shadows across the trees. For a brief moment, it was as though the girls were sprinting through a corridor of fiery chaos, their breaths coming in ragged gasps as the heat clawed at their backs.Amber Incendio Duo
Attack 8 + 8 Miss
Evasion 4 + 15
Wisdom 18 success
But the Hidebehind wasn’t deterred—not entirely. The flames may have forced it to retreat from the brightest light, but it adapted, shifting and weaving through the gaps, its form twisting unnaturally to avoid the worst of the inferno. Its guttural growl returned, as if the fire had only angered it further. The creature surged forward, its elongated limbs stretching toward them with a terrible fluidity, black tendrils cutting through the smoke like scythes.
Targeting Amber because technically she could not perform two actions in a round (running away and casting a spell).
Amber felt the air change before she saw the movement. A sharp rush of wind to her right—a warning too late to heed. One of the Hidebehind’s tendrils lashed out like a whip, nearly striking her shoulder. Had the Hided Behind struck, she would not have had the strength to rise again. She needed to ruin, run away.Hide Behind lashes out at Amber
Attack (disadvantage due to bright lights) 4, 6 + 15 missed
Evasion 17 + 8
Kaya knew that they were outmatched. Hide Behinds are people-killers, not human-threats. The light seemed to bother it, make it slower or perhaps less capable. The canopy of the forest and the dead of night made this place the realm of such dark and dangerous creatures. They needed to fall back.
Kaya would maintain the glow on the end of her wand, it was like a floodlight.
As long as she held onto her wand. As long as she did not lose concentration. She would start to run as a fire came to life to her back. Her footfalls and the crackle of flame would be all that was heard as the HideBehind pursued them both. In the light Kaya might be able to outrun it, but Amber was still behind (she would have to run next round). If the Hide Behind struck her just one more time, either of them really, they would likely go down.Kaya attempts to maintain Lumos Solem
Roll: 19 + 8 success
Kaya would be left with a dangerous, perhaps stupid decision. Stay, wait for Amber and run away together, risking both of them. Continue to run, run all the way back to the castle and find an adult. If Amber makes it, great. If she does not, then she would return with someone older and more capable of taking the hide-behind. Ot stay back and fight. There was no indication of how hurt the hide Behind was, if it was even hurt at all. The light certainly slowed them, but one could not be certain if it hurt them.
The fire was still raging, its light casting the Hidebehind’s shadow grotesquely large against the smoldering trees. The edge of the forest was near, the open expanse of moonlit safety tantalizingly close. Behind Kaya, the Hidebehind roared one last time, the sound drenched in fury and frustration. She would know that the Hide Behind would not follow them into the open, into the light. She knew that much. Amber just needed to make it to the edge of the wood.

Calming Presence is in affect
Affected by it: Amber Frost Hart
Fire. Kaya felt it starting and approaching with the Hidebehind seemingly not disturbed by it. Was anything able to injure it at all? It seemed to adapt quite well. Light was the only thing keeping it at a distance. Kaya ran as fast as she could, holding her wand with the light as if it was something she couldn't afford to lose. Life depended on it. She knew that much. She couldn't let the light go. As she kept running, feeling the warmth of the fire, she was no longer sure if she was running from the creature that wanted nothing more than to eat two girls or from the fire. The theory of fire was lost in its reality. At least they still tried. Did their best to be not the simplest prey.
Why was she so certain before that she was prepared? Kaya knew why. She didn't expect Hidebehinds to be here. Creatures that were learned in classes were not discussed to be found in this forest. It was supposed to be magical, fantastic, and safe. Except that safety was just an illusion for them now. Kaya knew that all it took was just a single attack, and girls would be staying there. But she wasn't going to let it happen. A habit of saving Amber and not giving up, whatever happened, was perhaps the reason behind her doing her best to get them out of this mess.
Somewhere during the running and all the mess, Kaya realized a simple truth that she hated to admit. She had to get someone to help them. An adult would be the best chance for girls to make it out alive. Even if unconscious, they at least could be found sooner rather than later. However, it meant that she had to leave Amber. Temporarily, but she had no way to communicate it to her bestie. She didn't care to think about how much she hated it. But she knew it was their chance. The only chance. She was injured and exhausted. Fear wasn't existing anymore, hidden behind the wish to survive. Kaya will return if Amber doesn't get out. They only needed time.
Sighed, Kaya decided to keep running. Staying to fight together or waiting for Amber would only reduce their chance of getting out and saving another one. The edge of the forest was so close, a safe place where the Hidebehind wouldn't reach. If only Amber could get to it too. Kaya heard the last, frustrated growl behind her as she reached the open space. A place that the creature wouldn't approach. She must've looked so bad now. Injuries, forest, fear, and a wish to survive. How ridiculous that she still managed to actually enjoy this. Adventure that she always wanted to feel. Except that she never imagined it would hurt Amber so much. But this adventure, although rather dangerous, was something that made her feel so happy. Out-of-place happiness was something no one could expect to see on her face, and yet it was there.
Castle was so far, and Kaya didn't have time. Time. She needed it desperately. Choosing to cast sparks rather than relying more on her ability to keep running, Kaya took a second to concentrate. Periculum. Hopefully these will be noticed, unless the fire in the forest already attracted someone's attention. Kaya only hoped that sparks would help someone to find her. She could get them to Amber if her bestie didn't run out. If she could stay conscious.
Having nothing to do except for waiting for someone to come, Kaya finally took a moment to breathe and look around. Did she really manage to get out of the forest? Looking back at it, she couldn't believe it. Fire taking over the woods, the Hidebehind still somewhere there, going after Amber. Her bestie. Kaya was so worried. She had to think about anything if no one showed up. A plan in case Amber was still in the forest and her sparks were left unnoticed. Perhaps she had to try to scream? If only someone was close enough, they would hear it. So she mustered more strength and looked in the direction of the castle. Help us, anyone, please. She didn't move from the place from where she ran out. It was better to not move. It would be easier to get to Amber if needed. Please, hold on a little bit more. She said quietly. Was it directed at Amber or at herself? It wasn't important. It felt impossible to wait. Waiting could cost the price she wasn't ready to pay.

The forest was alive with chaos—the fire roaring louder than the wind, branches crackling and snapping in its fury, and the Hidebehind's guttural growls reverberating through the suffocating air. Shadows stretched and twisted, flickering in the firelight like restless ghosts. Amber ran, her feet pounding against the forest floor, her wand gripped tightly in her trembling hand. The heat of the flames licked at her heels, but she didn’t dare stop. She couldn’t.
You... are probably going to make it. Whew that was a close one.
Sorry for having to edit this because I could not count.
The forest edge was perhaps a hundred feet away. All she needed to do was hold out for a few more moments.
The Hidebehind was undeterred by the fire, seemed to thrive in the chaos, using the flames as cover rather than a deterrent. The bright light made it unsteady, but the strange shadows that came from the smoke and dancing light made the image of the hidebehind erratic. Its tendrils slithered and darted with inhuman precision, its twisted form melting into the fragmented light and shadow as it pursued Amber relentlessly. It was faster than her—stronger—and the distance she had managed to put between them was rapidly closing.Chance to catch flame (20%, 1-20).

She chanced a glance over her shoulder, just for a second. A fatal mistake.
The Hidebehind struck.
A tendril of gloom lashed out, coiling missing her ankle. This attack that would have yanked her off balance with the force of a whip and rendered the girl unconscious struck the limb of a nearby tree. Amber would scramble away, breathing hard as smoke and heat invaded her lungs. Her wand still gripped in her hand, she ran as fast as she could.Hide Behind lashes out at Amber

Roll: 9 + 16 success
Amber pushed onward, the sparks perhaps giving her a final burst of hope. She would breech the edge of the forest, met with the cool night air. The heat of the burning forest to her back, the flames would continue to spread. Kaya was there, just outside the forest's foreboding boundary, her face pale and streaked with soot but alive. The Hidebehind screeched from the treeline but didn’t follow. The space beneath open sky was the Hidebehind's boundary, and it knew it. For now.
Sounds of someone heeding Kaya's call were getting louder. The extent of their injuries would then be realized, both of them could hardly stand. They might have survived this encounter but the forest would not forget them. Somewhere in the shadows, the Hidebehind would be waiting.

Some nights, Fabian could not sleep. It was not a new problem, this vigilant insomnia, simply part of his life as he had always known it. These past months it was just worse. A lot worse. He would find himself pacing around the office, his quarters, the whole space that was his to work and live in late into the night three or four times a week. Visiting his home in Haiti and seeing Sarai and the boys safe, spending precious and restorative time with them, had lessened these incidents.
Lessened, but never eradicated.
Once again in the presence of students who were far less capable than his fiancée and just as foolhardy and reckless as he had once been, Fabian's insomnia held him mercilessly once more. Security efforts had been increased, special care taken to ensure nothing like Hogsmeade could repeat itself here in America, yet still he fretted. The legal concerns associated with successful attack were least of Fabian's, his heart had yet to harden as it seemed Plott's had and he would not be able to live with himself should any more students be lost. They were young souls trusted to him, trusted to his staff to teach, protect, to nurture.
His eyes hadn't left the window for hours. And it was a good thing they didn't, for what seemed to be fire and smoke bloomed within the dark. The sleepless eyes narrowed as he stared out, wondering if he had begun to hallucinate. Fabian decided he wasn't after a minute or so and the billows of gray only grew against the stars, and even if he was it couldn't hurt to check. He collected wand, shoes, and coat, and had just breached the outdoors when telltale red sparks came shooting out of the forest into the sky. The forest. There was someone- and likely that someone was a student- in the forest. The fire must certainly be real then. "Verdammt Damm," he spat. Of course. Of course. Fabian practically sprinted across the grounds, to the girl at the edge of the forest from whose wand the sparks had shot.
"Miss Bennett," he spoke, almost to himself, as he identified the student. "Miss Bennett, I urge you to return to the castle." This was certainly to her, and certainly not a suggestion. She was old enough to know how to put out a fire, yet he would deny any help offered and continue to direct her and her friend Miss Hart who practically crawled out of the fire to safety, where he could tend to their injuries. Fabian, flicking his wand in the shape of a curly w and calling "Extinguo!", heard the screech of a malevolent creature dancing within the flames, a hidebehind if he was not mistaken, surmising this was what caused Kaya to call for help, to signal distress. He would have to do something about this. But first the fire and the injured girls. There would be heavy discussion regarding the forest amongst the staff in the coming days.

Calming Presence is in affect
Affected by it: Amber Frost Hart
Kaya was in a state of panic, but also quite exhausted. How could anyone face so much in just a couple of hours? Perhaps only insane or adventurous enough could manage it all. She didn't know how much time passed before she heard someone approaching her from the castle. She glanced at the man and was unsure what she felt. Relieved, because he surely knew more than she did. But stressed, she knew they were not supposed to be here at this time. Headmaster, the creature attacked me and my friend in that forest. Please take care, the Hidebehind loves shadows.
She replied quietly, exhausted and incredibly worried. He would hear her worries, maybe he would recognize it was directed at her friend. Kaya knew it was time to go to the castle, but he didn't know. She would never leave without Amber. Running out of forest, leaving her bestie alone with the creature was enough for this night. She couldn't repeat it again, by going now to the castle.
Her thoughts were all focused on Amber. Kaya kept looking at the forest, with worried expression. Finally, she heard the voice she was waiting for the most. Amber made it out of the forest and out of the danger. Amber. You are alive. I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to leave you. I wanted to call for help. She hugged her bestie before finally collapsing and bursting into tears. It was too much to handle but she was so happy to see Amber alive. Yes, they were injured and tired and probably still quite scared. Headmaster, can we just sit here for a moment? She wasn't stupid, but she knew she needed just a moment to breathe. Kaya felt safe now outside the forest with Headmaster nearby. Injuries and running were letting her realize how much she needed just a moment to breathe.
I offer you to breathe. She replied to Amber's question. They will need to go back to the castle and get themselves clean again. But they certainly needed to breathe. Feel safe finally was good enough for Kaya and she wasn't sure she was ready to leave Headmaster and go to the castle. He was a meaning of safety for her at that moment. An adult who surely could keep two girls safe. That's all she desperately needed now. To feel safe. Later we will need to go back to the castle as Headmaster said. But let's just take a moment to finally breathe. We were running for so long. And I was so scared. Did you know I was thinking to return if no one showed up? It would be the most stupid and dangerous decision, but she wasn't going to leave Amber, no matter what.

The night air was cold against their sweat-drenched skin, a stark contrast to the heat of the burning forest behind them. Amber and Kaya had escaped the forest, the fire, the Hidebehind. The edge of the woods felt like the border between life and death, between the hunted and the survivors. They had made it—barely.
But the Hidebehind had not left them.
From the shadows of the treeline, it lurked. It did not flee with the fire, nor did it charge forward. Instead, it watched. The flames flickered behind it, their glow illuminating its warped, twisting form, but the creature remained just beyond the reach of the moonlight. It was studying them, its hollow eyes glowing with something neither girl could decipher. Hunger. Rage. Amusement, even.
It let out a low, guttural growl—not of frustration, but of promise.
The Hidebehind did not forget its prey.
But it would not pursue them, the headmaster had made his presence known. Fabian, a powerful wizard in his own right deserved the wide breadth now afforded them as the Hidebehind slinked away, into the twisting shadows and gloom of the forest. The girls would not always have such a powerful escort it self soothed as gnawing hunger reminded them of their failure this day.
Another day. Tomorrow perhaps.
There is nothing for me to moderate from here. But as a prize, look down. You are going to notice something shiny on the ground. It looks like a jewel but a rather large one. it is not a jewel however, as one of you can quickly determine, it is obviously colored glass, like something from a piece of gaudy costume jewelry. Does this mean something? Maybe. Maybe I just wanted you to find a quarter machine gem. Narrator out.
