If she was being honest, Addie couldn't think of a time that she wasn't running behind. No matter what the day, time, or occasion, there always seemed to be a perfectly placed obstacle, and today was no exception. It started with a BAD hair day, followed by last minute homework cramming, and most obnoxious of all, a misplaced shoe.

Adeline rolled her eyes upon spotting the rogue loafer. She quickly put the shoe on, grabbed her robes, books, and all of the other items she planned to use for the day. "Let's see..." Adeline did a final check of her things. "Cauldron, Wand, Mortar and Pestle.... Scales!" Everything seemed to be in order, not that she had much of a choice. If she didn't get to potions NOW she would be history!

Adeline made quick time navigating the halls and stairwells of Hogwarts, practically running the entire distance between the Potions class, and Ravenclaw Tower. As she rounded the corner leading to the classroom she watched as the large door began to close in front of her.

Addie broke into a frantic sprint, papers flying behind her as she closed the distance between herself, and the door. At the last second, she swung the door open, and practically tumbled in. Small chuckles erupted from within the classroom. Addie looked up, embarrassed, and apologized to Professor Regan, who simply asked the girl to take a seat, reminding her the class was waiting.

Adeline looked around the classroom. The full classroom. Just then, her eyes found an empty chair. Two girl's, both Hufflepuffs sat on either side. Hufflepuffs are usually nice... Adeline reassured herself, taking her seat, and pulling her things from her bag. As Professor Regan rattled off the items needed for todays lesson, Adeline quietly gasped as she was hit with a horrible realization.

She had forgotten her crystal vials.

Orderly planning always rewards the disciplined, Aurelia always states.  Every day. The young badger has little notebooks for long-term plans down to to-do lists for the day. She savours the fact that she's always on time for whatever meeting or class she has to attend in her day-to-day life. The earlier, the better. Generally an anxious girl, Aurelia Valentine always scans the things in her leather satchel to avoid silly accidents like forgetting them in her dormitory room. One would also never see her careless with her things; they are organised from her textbooks down to her beloved quills and assorted muggle ballpoint pens. Aurelia Valentine is simply a worrywart that she achieved perfectionism.

It's always cold in the Basements, that much Aurelia will always notice every instance she had to traverse here. Of course, for Potions class. In her honest opinion, no one will catch her dead here. It is eerie, and as a half-blood who lived like a muggle all her life, ghosts are still haunting to think about—meeting them even more so. She heard rumours that a creepy ghost resided here who murdered the love of his life and died out of regret and grief. Sounds like utter rubbish, but who's to say that said rumour is not true? Prevention is better than cure. Sometimes, she questions how the institution operates. Letting a ghost who had murdered someone in his past life reside in a school where children generally study and might hear the side of his story had sounded questionable enough. She can't wait to write an article about that, since if she can't harass a professor or a prefect for answers, then she'll rant about it eventually by writing. With enough resources in her arsenal, of course. Call her an educated cynic.

Just like always, students waited in line outside of the classroom. The bell hasn't rung yet. Peeking to see that the door is still closed, Aurelia busied herself with opening her Magical Drafts and Potions textbook. She is quite ahead of her readings and already practiced her brain by writing an essay about the lesson she studied and what she generally retained. She pinned torn parchments in the page for today's lesson with paper clips. After skimming through the parchments, she snapped the textbook shut and clutched it against her chest, picking up her cauldron again and waited for the bell to ring. Her deep brown eyes scoured the area, and she saw Ruth Fairchild, a fellow Hufflepuff and an acquaintance. Aurelia gave the girl an uncertain smile of sorts before the bell rang.

They streamed inside the classroom. Aurelia thought of mumbling a greeting to Professor Regan but decided against it and sat in the front row. The Potions Mistress started off the lesson as usual, the young badger's eyes focused on an excerpt of the textbook the professor is discussing. She jumped slightly from her seat when the door made a loud clang sound from being barged open, especially when it is made of metal to prevent the smell of strong potions to waft outside; a huffing Ravenclaw girl followed suit. Aurelia slightly raised an eyebrow from the interruption and the slight scare. As soon as Professor Regan urged the girl to sit, the girl chose to sit beside her. Eyeing the girl with judgemental looks, she huffed slightly. How could anyone be late in Potions when it is scheduled in the late afternoons? The girl is a mess too. Aurelia chose to focus on the lesson at hand.

Today is an extra special day. Another day that the Potions Mistress will let the students brew the potion assigned. She reached for her leather satchel, taking out the necessary materials for today's brewing. Placing the cauldron carefully on her desk, Aurelia arranged her things beside it neatly. She eyed the girl beside her with open judgement when she gasped with a touch of melodrama while searching inside her leather satchel. The Ravenclaw girl is distracting, if not theatrical. Aurelia looked around to see if there was an unoccupied seat she could sit on instead—to no avail. The young badger busied herself with opening her Magical Drafts and Potions textbook instead to check the requisite ingredients.

𝕳umming to herself, Ruth rocked on her heels, tapping at the cover of her potions textbook while waiting to enter the classroom according to the rhythm of the words. It was quiet, not meant to be bursting and loud enough for the person next to her to hear. It was just for herself, a melody she remembered from when she was far younger. Sung by her darling mother, Eleanor, under the ceiling below the night sky. j’s lullaby, if she was right. The guitar strum by her delicate hands. Such a beautiful song, really. It reminded her of her mother really badly.

No time to get upset over trivial things. Ruth waved at Aurelia, beaming. Perhaps she should go sit with her today. After all, it was potion making day. Ruth was almost always excited for potion making day. Practical work? Definitely within her forte.

As she sat close to the other Hufflepuff witch, unpacking her belongings and giving the other a bit of space, she was jolted back when a loud sound ensued from the door, a Ravenclaw girl rushing in. Ruth found her lips perking into a smile as the girl went to apologise to Professor Regan before sitting down between the both of them. Ruth decided to let her be, paying attention to the Professor at the front as she went on with the agenda of today.

Potions class was always so intriguing. Unlike spells and charms taught in other classes, brewing wasn’t so simple. With the wave of her wand, knowledge couldn’t just simply be instilled into the girl’s head when it came to potions. With potions, it was dicing, and the grounding and measuring. The stirring and the final magical enchantment. It took longer than charms and spells. It was what made the class so enjoyable. Ruth found herself jiggling her leg beneath her long school robes, excited as the Mistress finally declared them to begin.

Ruth shuffled her text and notebook aside, placing down her cauldron, along with the materials Professor Regan had always reminded them of taking to class. Just as she did so, the girl beside her gasped. No matter how quiet it was, the Hufflepuff girl’s eyes darted to her, only to find her sitting. There didn’t seem to be anything obvious to her dilemma.

As curiosity always got to the girl, Ruth found herself tapping the girl on the shoulder. “Hey, you alright?” She asked.

Embarrassment flooded the young girls face as she shrunk into her chair. How could I let this happen? Self-pity didn't serve anyone, not even Adeline Spinks. Deep down she knew exactly how this had happened, and was ashamed that this was not the first time she had found herself in this exact situation. It wasn't even the first time this week.

On either side of her, the eyes of the two Hufflepuff girls felt like fire and ice on her shoulders. The Curly headed girl scoffed slightly, her annoyance seeping through. Addie didn't blame her, honestly. She seemed put together and poised, and next to her currently sat a huffing mess of disorganization, it made sense. She was the type of girl that intimidated Adeline, but also the kind that she aspired to be- pretty and polished.

Just then she felt a tap on her shoulder, paired with a kind whisper , "Hey, you alright?" the other girl asked. Addie turned to her, instantly noticing her large, green eyes, and gentle smile. Addie thought about lying. She considered getting up and leaving all together. She couldn't risk that though. There is no way her peers would take her seriously if she was THAT much of a mess. In the end, she decided to respond with honesty.

She cleared her throat, and spoke quietly, trying her best not to further disturb the class. "Actually...yes. Do either of you have any extra vials?" Addie started, hopefully "I can pay you guys back later, I promise! I am not sure how I managed to forget..." Addie rambled nervously, straightening out her robes. She turned to the more serious girl to her right and attempted to make a light hearted joke to break the ice "Silly me, right?" She chuckled, her cheeks bright red and hot with nervousness.

Cure for boils is a potion meant to, well, cure and remove angry boils that erupted from the victim's skin. Classified as beginner level, it is a powerful potion which consisted of snake fangs, horned slugs, and porcupine quills. Aurelia smiled to herself briefly, assessing her Magical Drafts and Potions textbook, opened specifically about the brewing information of Cure for Boils. Sounds elementary, the young badger thought, her nimble fingers touching her pliers distractedly. Squinting her deep brown eyes at Professor Regan as she laid down instructions carefully, Aurelia gave the Ravenclaw girl and Ruth admonitory looks, especially when she heard the Hufflepuff witch whisper and the other whispered back. They are talking while the class is proceeding!

Huffing a little loudly to express her disapproval, Aurelia withdraws her basic potion-making kit inside her leather satchel for the ingredients required for the task. Using her pliers—which she bought impulsively as the Hogwarts letter did not mention it as a prerequisite—she placed her slimy, dead horned slugs on her cutting board. Urgh, she was right to buy this equipment, since she was initially mindful of an object's texture. Professor Regan tasked them to brew Cure for Boils as the ending part of today's lesson. The young badger turned to the two seated beside her when she heard them whispering again.

The Ravenclaw witch was asking them if they had an extra set of vials. Aurelia slightly lifted an eyebrow, glancing at her extra set sitting in her basic potion-making kit. Slightly confused, the young badger asked herself how one could not resupply their kit if they bought a basic potion-making kit themselves. As she affirmed before and therefore reaffirming again, Potions is scheduled in the late afternoon. Plus, Potions only commences once a week. Any student should understand that they have a week's worth of time to resupply.  The Ravenclaw witch promised to pay them the cost and informed them that she forgot to bring hers. Aurelia gave the girl a rather sardonic smile after she said that it was silly.

“Silly, especially when one forgot to pack one of the most essential pieces of equipment in potion brewing, that is,” Aurelia replied haughtily, turning to her textbook again to focus on the first step of the instruction. She placed her snake fangs in her mortar with her pliers. “If I remember perfectly, Professor Regan stated—specifically in our first lesson—that a student should make sure that they have crystal phials and vials, as their purpose is to contain the finished potion. I can lend you my notes, since it seems like you might've forgotten that too,” the young badger offered sarcastically.

Helping Hands and Adverse Attitudes
𝕽uth giggled to herself, though somewhat sheepish as Aurelia let out a huff. She shouldn’t have been whispering in class, maybe. Just as she was about to mutter an apology to the Hufflepuff across her, Professor Regan had ushered them to begin brewing. Cures for Boils, hmm. Seemed useful enough. As the noise-level rose to a mild chatter, Ruth turned back to the girl (still unnamed) and gestured at her set of vials, grinning to the girl despite Aurelia’s rather factual bite.

“It’s alright. I definitely understand how you might have forgotten. It’s not too silly,” she cast a raised eyebrow at the girl behind them, “And besides, we only need one phial. As you can see, I’ve got plenty, I don’t mind.” Ruth really didn’t. Aurelia, however, seemed to have other plans.

As Ruth graciously handed over a phial (“Remember to give it back,” Ruth warned light-heartedly) she traipsed over to Aurelia’s side of the table, where the girl was busy with the snake fangs. Already several steps ahead! Ruth shook her head in amazement, but bent down to face, Aurelia, hefting up her own book at the same time. “Crush into fine powder before adding four measures of the crushed fangs into the cauldron,” She peered up at Aurelia from the top of her book, then dropped her voice. “You could be a little bit nicer you know,” she offered, gazing pointedly towards the extra set of vials near her. Honestly!

Addie's forced smile was quickly wiped from her face. Judging by the raven-haired girl's painfully true quips, Adeline was just as much of a mess as she had thought. well she's not too keen on jokes the girl tried to convince herself, sinking into her own thoughts. She watched the Hufflepuff meticulously grind her snake fangs; she was already beats ahead of her peers, all while putting Adeline in her place. Impressive.

Once again, the warmer girl's voice snapped Addie back. “It’s alright. I definitely understand how you might have forgotten. It’s not too silly,” Addie watched as her softness faded. The Hufflepuff girl glared at her classmate, her kind green eyes revealing a bit of edge. She looked back to Adeline "And besides, we only need one phial. As you can see, I’ve got plenty, I don’t mind.” She smiled at Adeline, finally breaking the young girl's tensions down. She really didn't mind. She was happy to help, and Adeline was more than thankful.

Addie thought to tell her her name, or even just offer a simple thank you, but just couldn't bring herself to speak. She hoped that her relieved smile said what she could not. She opened her book and took a deep breath, finally ready to get started on class, and on blending back in.

Just then, the green-eyed girl to her left rose from her seat, approaching the more stern Hufflepuff. Adeline tried to mind her business, but felt herself blushing once again as the girl began to, of all things, defend Adeline to her house member! These two represented all of the things that Hufflepuff stood for, in two different packages. On one hand, there sat a perfect example of kindness and humility, and on the other, a beacon of hard work, and brutal honesty.

The Sorting Hat truly is never wrong.

Grabbing her pestle, Aurelia started crushing her snake fangs in the mortar. No easy feat, of course; these are fangs, therefore definitely solid and hard. She's careful not to touch these fangs, as they are most likely still having poison—as Professor Regan stated in her class, in order to cure poison sometimes you have to add poison to help the drinker build immunity from it. She ignored Ruth when she approached her, most likely to reprimand her with her attitude. She was right, of course, as Ruth started whispering that she could be nicer. Aurelia huffed through her nose, holding her chin up high so much that her nose might have been raised higher than her stray and messy, wiry curls.

“But I am being nice,” Aurelia replied with a whisper under her breath, not looking at Ruth as she started transferring the powder in her brass scales to measure it. The classroom is becoming warm from the boiling cauldron all around, which is something Aurelia wholeheartedly welcomes, as the Basements itself could rival the cold temperature in Antarctica. The young badger grabbed her thermometer from her basic potion-making kit and started measuring the temperature of the water in her cauldron. That's when she looked at Ruth. “I even offered my Potions notes. You heard me.”

However, Aurelia knows that she was being snappish. As she turned up the heat, Aurelia turned to the Ravenclaw girl, who she saw now had a phial. Ruth most likely offered one. The smoke fumes started enveloping the classroom, and the young badger waved it all away. “I’m sorry. I guess I was being rude. If you need more vials, I have more,” the young badger gestured at her open basic potion-making kit, her lips tight. She glanced at Ruth, giving her a see-I-was-being-nice look. She turned to her cauldron once again to continue her brewing.

❝Hogwarts was changing her.❞

Helping Hands and Adverse Attitudes
𝕴n return for Aurelia’s look, Ruth gave the girl a smug one before returning to her seat. Whilst she didn’t know the girl too well, she seemed to Ruth like someone who just needed some time getting used to being nice. Haughty she was, more focused on analytical than the ‘gut feeling’. Ruth admired her for all its worth, but she definitely needed to learn some manners. But what was Ruth supposed to say? She, too, had a brutal mouth. As she got her own equipment and began spooning measures of the fang to the cauldron, she thought she hadn’t been using it for a while. Candid, that was. A smile gathered on her face. She was improving on herself.

Hogwarts was changing her.

She grew excited. Perhaps, when she got home, more people will like her. Now that she knew how to control her thoughts. Now that she was slowly, slowly, taming her sizzling urge to use her fists. Maybe.

The classroom was getting really stuffy. Most of the class was concentrated on working on the potions, resulting in less chatter and more the sound of bubbling cauldrons. Deciding to make conversation, Ruth waved her wand and let the potion brew, turning her seat to the girl beside her.

“Say, I didn’t quite catch your name,” she began, then held out a hand before retracting it back, deciding to let the girl do what she needed to do. “Uhm, I’m Ruth Fairchild. This lovely lady here is Aurelia.” She gestured at the girl behind her. “And you are?”

The two Hufflepuff's bantered quietly amongst themselves. Addie couldn't help but be embarrassed to had been the catalyst for it. Maybe this would be the lesson the girl had been waiting on. Maybe now she would learn to be more organized, responsible, and intentional.

“I’m sorry. I guess I was being rude. If you need more vials, I have more,” The dark haired girl gestured towards her leather bag. It seemed like she mostly meant it."Thanks." Adeline faked a small smile, turning back to her spread of ingredients and tools, now complete with the addition of the girl's phial. She reached for her mortar and pestle, grabbing the six snake fangs as she did so. She spent a moment grinding them into a fine powder, before adding four measures of the fangs into her cauldron, and heating the powder appropriately. She gave her wand a wave, and sat back. The next step was quite simple; watching, and waiting. Adeline stared into the cauldron absent-mindedly, finding herself a bit entranced as the cauldron smoke swirled about before her.

A voice broke Adeline's concentration, “Say, I didn’t quite catch your name,” The girl on the left of Adeline broke the silence. She reached her hand towards Addie, before quickly drawing it back, clearly trying to give Adeline some space. "Uhm, I’m Ruth Fairchild. This lovely lady here is Aurelia....And you are?” Addie turned to her, "It's Adeline," She began, "But you can call me Addie." The young girl extended her hand toward Ruth, returning her initial gesture with a grin. She was thankful for the girl, and happy to be able to properly address her. "It's nice to meet you..." Addie said, before quickly following up "...guys." She turned her head slightly to glance at Aurelia, offering her a polite, friendly nod.
