The holiday season is coming really soon. Sere's exams period had been over, leaving homeworks to do during the holiday. With every step, the girl could hear the Christmas bells jingling. She could also see the students packing up, ready to go home and enjoying their respective new year. Unlike those students, Sere decided not to go home. So her time was quite free now and Sere still didn't have a definite schedule regarding the things she would do to spend her first Christmas at Hogwarts.

At this perfect time, an owl came to her. Maisie Gemmell, the Ravenclaw girl who had dueled so well with her senior several weeks ago, this time invited Sere to moderate a double duel consisting of first years: two Ravenclaws and two Slytherins. A very surprising escalation. Never have she thought that her career in duelling could reach this point, and she's so excited for this duel.

Sere, who only carried her wand behind her robe on this leisure day, entered the Duelling Club and immediately climbed onto one of the empty Duelling Piste, left side from the entrance. When everyone had gathered, Sere formed a little smile, "Hi, I am Sere Nade, second-year duellist of Gryffindor. It is such an honor to moderate your duel."

The British-Korean girl cleared her throat, "Alright, let's proceed to the unofficial duel. On my left side, Team Ravenclaw: Maisie Gemmell and Avis Greymond..." Sere's left hand gestured, "...and on my right side, Team Slytherin: Saunders Napier and Alyss Gilmour." Her right hand was also extended as a gesture. Maisie gave enough details regarding this duel in her owl, including the names of the students, so that Sere could memorize them in an instant.

"I hope you understand the basic rules. Remember that safety always comes first," Sere glanced at the duellist, "And... Start!"

It was time to do this again—properly. Going against Tracey had, in the older Ravenclaw's words, been training. And she'd stood up to the test well she knew, but it had still ended in a loss. If she was going to make the duelling team—or any house team—she'd need to do better, to be better.

Now, there seemed to have presented itself a most excellent opportunity and against the boy who'd nearly let her drown. She had to give Saunders credit: he was confident and held fast to his beliefs. If there was anything duelling with Tracey had taught her it was that half of a performance in a sport came down to confidence. There was no doubt Saunders Napier with his fancy name, fancy words, and even fancier clothes had that in spades.

But the dressmaker's daughter would hold fast to her place on dais. With her very best friend at her side, she knew the two of them could weather whatever the Slytherins might have up their sleeve. Or at least, they'd give this adventure their all. She gave Avis a wink as they moved up onto the stage.

Before them would be Sere Nade, the same girl who'd moderated her duel with Tracey. Although she had no real knowledge of the older student outside of this room, she had been very fair and kind the last go around. And she seemed very excited as she introduced both teams.

"Good luck," she said politely, holding back the urge to add something like 'and don't let a hippogriff run off with your wand, Napier' on the end. In truth, she expected him to be an excellent duellist—and to have selected a great partner—but there was no denying he'd gotten under her skin that very first day. And no one had rivaled him in that respect since.

Alyss had admired the sport of dueling since the very beginning of the school year, signing up for the waitlist, agreeing to an all Slytherin duel, and now yet another unofficial duel to top off the year. She had walked into this after she had been asked to participate by Saunders, the boy she had met in their common room. Although her initial impression of him had been that he was most likely a spoiled rich kid, that had never been enough for Alyss to turn down an opportunity to cast some wicked spells and let loose.

She padded onto the dais, eyes studying their opponents, before glancing down at herself. She noticed how tightly she gripped her wand, whether out of fear, excitement, or exhilaration, no one would know. She looked down at her beat up shoes, which weren’t the cleanest, though thankfully she had cleaned the soles a few hours prior, which left her confident that at the very least she hadn’t tracked in any dirt. Unfortunately, Alyss knew that her cat, Milo, had elected not to come along this time, having learned that oftentimes the duelling club was associated with loud noises and sudden spells.

The last time that Alyss had been in the duelling club, it was an all Slytherin duel, which ended up being boys vs girls. That had taught how important it was to pay attention to her opponents, to capitalize on any opportunities given. The two they would be facing off against were both Ravenclaws, the “smart ones”. Slytherin got the bad reputation of being cunning and ambitious, but whatever it took to win was exactly Alyss’s thought process, which in her eyes was far smarter than any other strategy.

Alyss nodded to Saunders in confirmation that they could totally do this, before turning and locking her eyes upon her competitors. Alyss didn’t know what she was walking into, and knew nothing of any rivalries. She was simply there to have a good time and win, because that was what she was determined to do. Narrowing her eyes, Alyss raised her wand, prepared to strike at the target of her choosing. Let the games begin.

There have always been unexpected rivalries in life. One sees the elephant in the room, yet cannot determine when and why it even appeared in the first place. So it was between Saunders and Maisie.

Saunders was surprised at how quickly the tension between them escalated. Although, to be fair, the rivalry had been ignited largely due to his, well, sharp reaction to Maisie's innocuous question. He presumed, however, that the matter would be resolved there, in the courtyard where he gave a piece of his mind to her. But here they were -- participants in a drama steeped in the sensibilities of an age long past: a duel. Maisie and the other girl (Saunders, half-listening to Sere, couldn't quite catch her name) were pretty determined to behave as if Saunders had slapped them with a pair of white gloves. Won't bother me none.

Saunders, as any decent gentleman would do, did his best to make his arrangements per the code d'honneur. Even though he had no shortage of upperclassmen whom he could call upon to stand by his side, he did not even consider stooping to that, instead, he preferred Alyss Gilmour. After all, Saunders was not such a riffraffish boy as to cry for help from an older student in a pinch. Who has the nerve to allege such a thing?

The young snake couldn't say that he knew Alyss very well, but he had a hunch, ever since their conversation in the Common Room, that she could be... trusted. If he was wrong, well, that's fine; he would consider it an honour to lose a battle for loyalty. And if he was right, even finer, he had always adored being proved to be right.

Saunders beamed a benign smile as Maisie wished him good luck. "Thank you," he answered, his voice velvety, "And good luck to you." He gave a slight nod to the girl next to Maisie. Moving toward Alyss with measured steps, "Much obliged," he whispered cordially, "for being here."

The Napier boy gripped his wand tightly. The word the salesman in Ollivanders had uttered the day he bought it, which hadn't been long ago, flashed through his mind: experimental. "Make me proud, pal," he thought, hoping that his voice would penetrate the cherry wood skin of the wand and reach its soul, which, according to the well-known consensus of the wizarding community, had enough volition to choose its owner.

After greeting their moderator, Avis sized up the two Slytherins across from her on the dais, hoping she didn’t look completely out of place in the duelling hall. In truth, Avis was much more of a Quidditch player, completely comfortable and confident on any broom as she’d been flying for most of her life and she tried desperately to channel that energy into herself now. This was her first duel ever and it looked as though she might be the only one here who hadn’t stepped onto the dais as of yet. She swallowed, her throat suddenly dry. She didn’t want to let Maisie down, especially after her best friend had showed so much confidence in asking her to join the duel, so the Ravenclaw straightened her shoulders and set an expression of cool confidence on her face… at least, that’s what she hoped she was portraying.

Nervous that her voice would come out of her dry throat as a croak, Avis could only manage a nod in response to the posh-looking boy’s mention of good luck and she turned to give the blonde Slytherin girl a quick nod of acknowledgement as well.

Finally she turned to look at her partner and a calm feeling settled over her nerves as she returned Maisie’s wink. The two of them had handled more daring situations than she could count. Surely they could hold their own in duel against another pair of first years, especially one that Maisie held some sort of grudge against. The girl had a frightening stubbornness in her character that made it difficult to win any sort of argument or rivalry with her. Avis thought this might come in handy.

Glancing at her opponents once more, Avis narrowed her eyes and set her stance, readying herself for whatever might be thrown at her in the coming hour. She might not be a duellist but she figured a Knockback Jinx couldn’t be half as bad as a Bludger to the gut… right?

Once again, this was Sere's first time in moderating double duel. It turned out that this kind of duel required very meticulous eyes to see every spell casted by each duellist from both teams. This made Sere even more admire the captains who were able to moderate the official 3 vs 3 duel. They had to eat tons of carrot to keep that sharp eyes. Yeah, that's what people in the muggle world say, eating carrots to make our eyes healthy.

Back to the duel. First round went pretty well for both teams. Maisie and Saunders became the targets of each other's team. Sere could see the Slytherins was pretty good at aiming, even Saunders was able to create an aflame from Incendio he casted. This reminded Sere of her first two official duels, previous year, where she was defeated back-to-back by the Viridian Vipers, and now in front of her were two more potential duellists from the same house. How many talented students do they actually have in their house, actually?

On the other hand, Sere no longer doubted Maisie's ability in casting spell. Sere could still clearly remember Maisie's performance from the previous unofficial duel. Her homework now was to practice herself in evading spells aiming at her. Maisie's partner, Avis, unfortunately missed her target by just a small gap. "That was a pretty good one! But you can do better!" Sere said while looking at Avis. The girl still has plenty of chances, so there's nothing to worry about.

The greeting that Saunders offered her was just as fancy as one might expect. Alyss, having grown up in the Outer Hebrides, had never heard such language prior to her arrival at Hogwarts. Of course Saunders wasn’t the only student to address her in such a manner, but Alyss had no clue had to respond to such a welcome. “I- of course, happy to be here.” she replied, before turning back to their opponents and raising her wand to begin their duel.

The adrenaline Alyss got from dueling was unmatched, and she enjoyed it quite a bit. Although this should have been no surprise to her, the rush she got from not only watching her spell hit, but also to gaze at the spells as they whizzed past her. Unfortunately- or perhaps fortunately- not a single spell was sent in her direction. Both spells were directed at Saunders, mirroring the snakes strategy of targeting Maisie. Thankfully, Alyss had the pleasure of watching not only her spell, but also Saunders hit their target, though Maisie was remarkably close to dodging Saunders’ Incendio.

Of the two spells going after her partner, only one hit, leaving the snakes in far better condition than the eagles. Alyss’ eyes flickered back and forth, between the two girls lined up across from her, and the condition that her teammate found himself in. Taking a deep breath, Alyss lined up for another bout, preparing herself for her next move.

Just about everything that could have gone wrong in the first few moments of the duel did, indeed, go wrong. Immediately she found herself the target of spells, unable (however narrowly) to evade them, while Avis' spell went while. Even her own Incendio did not set the post boy on fire.

Maybe she was putting too much pressure on this duel—on herself. As she flinched from the flames on her robes, something seemed to click in her brain: she was a threat. The two Slytherins were afraid of her; that's why she had been the target of two hard hitting spells. So, even as she could feel the spells impact like a gut punch, she stood resolute. She might be on the back foot now, but only because they must have been from the start.

"It's okay," she said to Avis softly, who was completely unscathed. Still, she hoped the miss would not knock her best friend's confidence. Avis was fierce in every way—perhaps most noticeably on the Quidditch pitch—and she needed that fervor today. They'd only be strong so long as they were both in it together.

Despite the pain of the flames, she held her wand taut ahead of her. Napier and his companion would not get the best of her—not without a fight.

Avis grimaced as she watched her spell miss Saunders by a few centimeters. She turned to glance at her partner, who was currently battling the after flames from the Slytherin’s Incendio and her stomach dropped. There was her best friend, taking the brunt of each spell while Avis had not only missed but remained completely unscathed. She shook her head as her temper began to rise. Merlin, she hated when she couldn’t get something right the first time. Her impatience tended to get the better of her in these situations.

Avis turned back towards her opponents and mumbled to herself as she planned her next action.

C’mon Avis. Pull some weight. You’re not helping,” she grumbled quietly, glowering at her own wand in her hand. She desperately wished she could help Maisie with something but for now, all she could do was her best to defend the two of them. Obviously the two Slytherins had a similar strategy. Take out the stronger of the pair. Avis took a deep breath. She hoped her next spell would falter their advance and draw a bit of their attention to herself.

She responded to Maisie’s comforting words with a determined look. “Don’t worry. I’ll get it right,” she replied fiercely.

"Ouch," whined Saunders as an Incendio struck him. The boy had a delicate disposition when it came to pain. Just as he loathed physical exertion, he had little tolerance for any sort of bodily discomfort. Unlike those strange spirits who pressed their tongues against their aching teeth and found bitter satisfaction in doing so, Saunders would never count himself among them. Yet, though he felt a faint twinge of embarrassment for having let out such a sound, he was grateful he had not burst into flames - unlike poor Maisie. Quickly, his eyes darted back to the duelling arena.

Having narrowly avoided a spell flung his way by Avis, he drew a deep breath. A really deep breath. A crisp smile then spread across his face, as he noticed that Maisie failed to evade Alyss' spell as well. “A fine start,” he mused, before calling out “Bravo!” in his fellow snake's direction.

Truthfully, Saunders was not that vain as to assume that he posed a much greater threat to the eagle girls than Alyss did. Both were first-years, after all, with no vast gulf in skill or stamina separating them. He therefore concluded that Maisie’s irritation towards him had unmistakably painted a target on his back. It was, luckily, a deduction that kept his ego in check, sparing him the peril of unwarranted self-congratulation. After all, duelling was an art that demanded not just magical prowess but also mental resilience.

As the flurry of initial spells subsided into a brief hush, the Napier boy felt his focus sharpen, almost in a meditative way. His wand remained steady in his hand, poised and ready for the next attack.
