A Ghostly Acquaintance
December 2nd Corridors“English” “Gaelic”
Alyss was roaming Hogwarts once again, each room and hall blurring together as she gazed at the decor, eyes shifting left and right as she walked. It was not an uncommon occurrence to see Alyss walking the halls endlessly, as she was determined to know her way around the entire school, as well as locate as many secret passages as she could. She soon found herself peeking around corners as she continued, grin sitting atop her face as she pretended that she was hiding from someone, or sneaking up on another.
Although Alyss wasn’t actually playing hide and seek with anyone, nor was there much of a possibility that she was being looked for, it was still a way for her to continue her exploration with a fun twist on it. As she sneaked around the castle, even trying to step more softly by almost tip-toeing in her shoes, it occurred to her that she looked crazy. Alyss was alone, as far as she could tell, and was sneaking around a random corridor in the great big magic school, acting as if she didn’t belong. Of course, this didn’t bother her. This was her designated time to explore, and if today that mean peeking around corners, tip-toeing, and trying to pry every portrait off the wall to see if it was a door into a secret passage, Alyss was having a blast.
That was, until she heard something. Or maybe she just thought she heard something. Either way, Alyss froze in the middle of poking at a statue adorning the hall, and listened to see if there would be a repeat of the interruption. Alas, Alyss was not the most patient, and before very long had passed she had convinced herself that not only was the noise a ghost, but that she should sneak up on said ghost and scare it. Not only would it make for a good laugh, but also she would have a great story to tell later.
Nodding to herself, Alyss set off in the direction that she thought she heard the sound. Now, was her sense of hearing the greatest, especially when she was preoccupied? No, absolutely not. But she was very much a determined little eleven year old, who was utterly convinced of the prospect of a ghost. Sweeping her hair over her shoulder, Alyss began to tiptoe more intentionally, ready to catch and scare this ghost.

Note: No godmodding here, the likelihood that there was very little or no noise is incredibly high, given that Alyss was just pretending to sneak around and may be now finding an “actual” reason to sneak around.

Soon to meet @Alyss Gilmour
Reading whilst walking proved to be problematic and Simon often wondered how it seemed the Ravenclaws of the school mastered such a craft. Simon was pretty sure it was impossible for nearly everyone else and that somewhere, deep within history, there had been some war general from some country on some battlefield who had simultaneously read important documents and walked and somehow had marched his army into enemy territory. Simon's attempt at multitasking wouldn't be so tragic, but his enchanted satchel did knock into a golden cup of some sort or another that sat on a small low pedestal near the corridor walls. It went crashing down to the stone flooring where it bounced once, causing a tinny sort of echo to fill the space. Luckily upon picking it up, Simon saw that the metal cup was unharmed, not even the smallest of indentations.
Still, he didn't need to try his luck a second time and so now that he was in less than familiar parts of the castle, he stowed his book away into his satchel and looked around him. He had been in this area of the castle before - and probably most areas having been a former prefect - but it wasn't one that most occupied very often. What was special about this area though was a few secret passages that could serve to get from Point A to Point B when there was high traffic in other corridors of the castle, and he knew there was a secret stairwell somewhere - but where was it exactly?
Simon came to an elaborate tapestry on the wall and moved it aside, only to find solid stone wall behind it. No, not that one. "Go back," he said to himself, thinking that maybe he had passed it. So he stepped back from the one tapestry and went to the one before it to check there.
Hogwarts was a fascinating castle as far as castles went and Simon wondered if it was because it was magical - created by four ambitious individuals from the wizarding world - or if it was just fascinating for the sake of castles. Being from England, he had toured many just from muggle school field trips alone and none of them compared to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry - not even close.

Alyss turned a corner, eyes flicking this way and that as she tried to figure out where to go next. She had been pretty certain that the noise had come from this corridor, and the absence of anyone in said corridor was awfully confusing. After all, where else would the ghost be but where the noise had been? Of course, the young girl hadn’t taken into account the fact that ghosts couldn’t interact with any actual objects in the world that Alyss lived in, thus meaning that if whatever she was chasing had been, in fact, a ghost, that would mean they had to have screamed or yelled or done something of the sort.
As she crept, Alyss found herself nearly hugging the wall as she went, as to ensure that she could see everything happening around her, given that a wall couldn’t do anything. As she was having a brief thought of how brilliant she was being, she tripped. Right over a little table that had a tiny statue placed upon it. Groaning as she stood, Alyss lifted up her hands, which had luckily reacted quickly enough to catch her. There were no scrapes on them, they were just red. So she was going to be fine. Groaning to herself in annoyance for the racket that she just made, Alyss stood still, testing to see if there would be another noise. Perhaps the ghost hadn’t heard her, and she still had a chance at spooking them. Or perhaps not.
Her hope deflated upon not hearing any noises completely out of the ordinary, except maybe a mumbling that could have been a ghost! Or just a student that was lost. After all, Hogwarts was quite large, and Alyss had gotten lost on several occasions in the past. Sighing, Alyss muttered, “I can’t believe I blew that.” To herself before beginning to walk towards another turn, however this time not bothering to glance around the corner nor sneak, as she believed that her chance to scare a ghost had been lost.

Running into @Alyss Gilmour
A sound of scrapping was heard from - somewhere. Deep in this part of the corridor it was difficult to pinpoint the sound and Simon wished he was able to target it the way his owl would have been able to but nope - even his dhampir senses didn't allow him any special benefit in this moment.
The lack of students that used this particular part of Hogwarts made him wonder if it was somehow off limits. He was no longer a prefect and didn't have 'prefect power' when it came to some things - like wandering parts of the castle that ought not be wandered. And he was too high up off an upperclassmen to perhaps claim he was lost.
He looked at the wall. The tapestries. The tapestries hung without so much as a portrait to help guide him. "Hello?" he called out, but the sound sort of warped off the walls in an odd fashion that might not have sounded like a word at all. "Hellooooo?"
There was a terrible lack of light here as well but this was one predicament where his dhampir's sense of sight in low light did come in handy - or at least it would if he wasn't walking backwards to try and figure out where he was. Simon looked up to the design on the one tapestry before him as he backed his way toward the turn into another corridor. Perhaps he hadn't been in these halls before. He took another step back and BAM, collided with something - or someone.

There wasn’t supposed to be anyone there. That was the first thought to cross Alyss’ mind as she went plummeting towards the ground for the second time in the past five minutes. But this did solve the mystery for her: she had not heard a ghost, but a person! This person seemed rather tall, or at the very least taller than herself, but that didn’t mean much, given her short stature. Perhaps he had also been ghost hunting, prior to crashing into her and leaving her stranded on the ground. The halls around them seemed to bend and grow tall for a split second as she fell, every tapestry growing taller, trinkets upon little table growing farther away. It almost felt as if she was looking through binoculars the opposite way, leaving everything looking like they weren’t supposed to, and Alyss knew it.
“Ugh!” Alyss found herself exclaiming upon beginning to to pick herself up off of the floor, having fallen smack in her bum. There was a muffled thud when she hit the ground, though her groan that followed was not because she was hurt. Although her hands were still bright red from her tumble just a minute or so prior, that was not her biggest issue. No, it was rather because she didn’t love the fact that she had just run right into someone in a wing of the castle that she might not be allowed to wander. Was she becoming a clumsy idiot? Falling this often when trying to be inconspicuous must’ve been unheard of! Alyss gazed up at her attacker and saw a fellow student- thank god. No professor, telling her to be more careful.
He had chestnut brown hair and wore a hufflepuff robe, marking him as a do-gooder. “Nice to meet you, I’m Alyss. Do you happen to know where exactly we are?” that was sure to leave quite the first impression. Having bonked into someone before, Alyss knew how this usually went. They would either give a rushed apology and hurry along on their merry way, or they would apologize profusely, exchange pleasantries, and then would never see nor want to see Alyss again. At least she would get half of the latter out of the way, as to speed along this process. And then she could get out of this maybe haunted hallway, preferably via secret passageway or some other cool method of escape.

Apologies to @Alyss Gilmour
"My apologies, are you alright?" were Simon's first words to the girl as he leaned over, offering to help her up. He had been paying more attention to the book in his hands than to where he was going but at this hour there usually hadn't been others in the corridors. Many nights he had patrolled these halls and hardly ever did he meet another.
He had to smile a little at her nice to meet you comment because colliding with someone, let alone a dhampir, was definitely not a nice way to meet another - at least not the nicest. It was then that Simon worried a little about his largely dilated pupils that his dhampir's heightened sense of sight provided him in that low lit corridor. Would she notice? Would she be afraid?
"Are you alright, Alyss?" he asked, now that he had a name to go with the girl. "I'm Simon." She hadn't provided a last name so he felt it was too formal to do so as well. Sometimes he did that - providing it in such circumstances that deemed it too formal and was trying to get better at it.
"We are..... well, I'm not certain exactly. I like exploring this part of the castle because I don't really quite know it even despite by former prefect patrols. I like to think of it as "the land of secret passages" in my mind and it sort of creates a bit of a labyrinth once you try and take some of them. This school can be a bit wonky. I'd love to see an actual tried and true map of it someday." But it seemed any that he saw of the castle had been problematic - as if the building could change somehow. He wouldn't doubt it could although - magic and all.
"Are you trying to get somewhere or just off exploring?" he asked her curiously. He already admitted to the last one so hopefully she'd join him if that were the case and not fear that he'd turn her in for being there after curfew. He was as well.
