June did as Vale instructed to boil their whole chicken for three hours straight in the cauldron. The smell wavered through the air, and Vale was disappointed that the chicken wouldn't really be used for anything further after. Still she would eagerly snack on the boiled pieces after from the side as she attended to her own part of the potion work.

Their first potion was a success, as expected. Potioneering work came to Vale like nothing. It came like nothing to her entire family, mostly.

She worked to grab the chicken water with a sponge, squeezing out the water into a bowl nearby. Despite her babbling from their earlier handcrafted potion, Vale wasn't as talkative this time. The potion reminded her of her practiced reason for even knowing how to conduct the potion in the first place. She turned her head to Avery, only to speak of further instructions on how to conduct the potion.

"Be sure to chop up exactly six cherries, coarse. Not fine." She turned away, looking through cabinets and storages to find the cherries for him, placing them onto the cutting board she set up earlier. She didn't like the idea of grinding up spider legs again, especially in front of Familia, her pet spider, who was quick to run around through her braids before moving onto the table to observe the group with her many eyes. She went to running around the lab space after, likely to look for a source of food to consume in the past time.

Such a greedy spider, and she was getting noticeably plump for her species.

Vale moved to pull out beetle eyes, demiguise and spider legs for the rest of the potion. She placed them next to the cauldron for her group.

"Apparently the ashwinder eggs will be in a wooden cabin. Maybe we can do something more than just use the potions? Chess doesn't pander to just one pawn. If the parents truly are around, we can find a way to distract them in the time frame?" Despite her typical sense of personality, Vale could surprisingly have sane ideas.

"You think the committee would notice if we took the ashwinders for pets? Never be without a good fire!" Usually, the sane ideas have a catch to them.

Vale would move to the cauldron to prepare for her own set of task, grabbing a wooden spoon to stir the cauldron once June was prepared.

"Ashwinders come from dying embers. They'll likely be lurking from a fireplace in this wooden cabin. They don't live long. I'd say we should wait it out, but uh...well, the eggs will probably burn the place down and I suppose neglecting a fire is also 'frowned upon in society.' Hmph! Oh, and we wouldn't have the eggs either, so there's that..." Vale sighed in grief.

"Those ashwinders in our races don't seem so intimidating, right June? We can surely handle a few snakes. We're snakes ourselves!" Vale raised her nose up, as if proud and fearless to the idea of going up against nature's very own arsonists. It wouldn't be very Ashwood of her if she feared any form of fire, let alone one she is used to dealing with in her own household.

He had never made an Invisibility Potion before, and was keeping his fingers crossed, hoping he wouldn't screw this up for his team. Fortunately, Vale seemed to know exactly what to do, and had prepared the necessary ingredients for their station. Under her careful supervision, Avery had more confidence that things would go as smoothly as he could possibly make them with his natural butterfingers.

Once the chicken was done boiling, Avery removed the remains from the cauldron. He made sure to use a clean knife while chopping the 6 cherries, coarsely, since Vale had carefully reminded him not to chop them finely. "Does this look good?" he asked her, just to make sure he was doing it correctly. He was not much of a potioneer, after all. Once they were to satisfaction, he slid the cherries into the cauldron.

Then, he ground up the spider legs Vale had measured and set aside for him, using a mortar and pestle, until they were a fine powder. He wasn't quite sure what Familia made of that. "They're not your legs, I hope," he said teasingly to Vale's pet, then wondered how likely his girlfriend would think to use Familia's legs if she had run out of ingredients for a potion experiment. Though she probably wouldn't execute on the idea, he had no doubt that the thought would cross her mind when she was excited enough about an impromptu potion-making session. After grinding the spider legs, he put 2 measures into the cauldron.

"I'm very good at distractions," Avery offered, liking Vale's idea. "Somehow, snakes always seem to like me, although I never like them," he said, thinking of a particular slimy and slithery Cu Sith (@Hanako Tone) who didn't quite understand the concept of personal space. An ashwinder pet.... Avery cringed. It would be a Cu Sith who kept chasing him with fire.

He added 3 measures of beetle eyes after Vale stirred the potion once clockwise. "Can we douse the cabin with water or something?" Avery asked, rambling off the top of his mind and this was the first suggestion he could think of. "So it won't burn. Not sure if that would affect the eggs in any way?" Yeah, it was too bad if they couldn't let the cabins burn, since it'd be nice to see a big bonfire in the the middle of winter. "Could've had some yummy fried eggs," he muttered. Maybe the boiled chicken was making him hungry.

This potion rattled June. To her, potions was a class and a subject that she floundered in astronomically (she got an E once, the drama queen), and now here they were attempting a potion they wouldn’t be taught for another year that Vale somehow swore she knew how to make. As nervous as she was, June had to admit that an invisibility potion would be a significant advantage during the task. If they were stealthy enough, at least one of them, it should be relatively easy to complete the task.

Then again, June said the same thing about racing, and her career was less than stellar in that regard.

Putting a chicken in boiling water 3 hours before their second brew was absolutely something she could do, however, keeping an eye on it while they brewed their Black Fire potion.

After watching Vale and Avery chop and sponge, her nerves began do die down slightly. Would have been more of it were not for Vale’s… interesting choice of conversation topics. Eventually she was handed sponges full of the boiled chicken water to wring into the cauldron, another step that didn’t seem so hard. Was she just terrible at following directions, is that why potions was so hard for her?

That didn’t seem right, June was good at structure. Perhaps it was that potion making required more than science and precision, though that was a large part of it as well, but a feel, a gut instinct that June somehow just did not have.

“It’d be good to be defensive as opposed to offensive, I think. Maybe reviewing water related spells will be useful, that’s a good idea.”

An ashwinder pet would certainly be interesting, and it was true, she had come across several during her tenure in the racing team. “Don’t they often die soon after laying their eggs? I’m curious how the organizers have worked the timing out for that. They don’t seem like the most interesting of pets, I think you’d much prefer a fire breathing chicken, Vale.”

She stood back and let the happy couple brew before adding so carefully with her breath held one, and exactly one, drop of demiguise tincture, and flipped an hour glass for twelve minutes. To her relief, it was indeed silver in color. With a wave of her wand, putting all her faith in her magical prowess, the potion was complete.

Hopefully they did well.
