The greenhouses were quiet. It was a welcome relief from the temporary Ilvermorny quarters where Fabian had been spending the majority of his time, where he had little to no separation from the student population. Granted, it was by choice, and the professor had probably made himself too accessible, but after the tragedy they'd all been witness to, how could he withhold himself?
It was no matter now, though. The students were at their ball. He assumed Hogwarts faculty were in attendance. He hoped they were, because he certainly was not. He was here, with Sarai, among the cultivated jungle she so lovingly cared for and taught in, with two glasses of Barbancourt and a burning question on the tip of his tongue.
He'd asked the boys' permission first, of course, even if it had been six years already. They had given it yet still his nerves gripped him. Fabian, for all his urgency, moved slowly with these sorts of things. Of course he'd loved her all that time, and of course he'd wanted to do this far sooner, but an unfamiliar fear settled deep into the pit of his stomach every time he thought about it. For as much as he loved her, and as much as he knew she loved him back, he was afraid to be married. He was terrified he'd make a horrible husband, that the wonderful dynamic he had with Sarai would change. He'd never made a commitment like this, not really, and though his career as a teacher showed just how well he could commit to something trivial, his psyche would not allow him to apply this record of faithfulness to something so important as his partner. He was utterly convinced he would screw everything up.
This was not the only view he held, however, the other side of his mind practically driving him mad with its insistence. This side of his mind, after much battle, emerged victorious, which was why his pocket was heavy with the ring.
The ring was a perfect thing. The band was gold and sculpted as leafy vines around a glimmering oval moss agate stone, tiny emeralds laid in the worked leaves. It was exquisite, just like her, and Fabian could not wait to place it on her finger.
His hand slipped into his pocket, curling around the ring box. He sipped from his glass and set it aside, a swig of liquid courage to aid what came next.
In the gardens of her home, Sarai's beauty seemed to multiply tenfold, and the same could be said for the gardens of Hogwarts. The adoration in his gaze was plain to see as his hazel eyes settled on her angelic face. "Meine Rose, my rose" he began, standing in front of her and taking her hand in his. "You know that I love you. With all of my heart. And I could never go back to a world without you." She would likely notice just how tight his grip was, just how sweaty his palm had become. "I wonder if you would do me a great honor."
This was it. Fabian dropped to one knee, bringing the ring box out of his pocket and flipping it open with one hand, presenting the piece to her, a hopefulness filling his eyes. "Would you do me the honor of becoming my wife?"

That moment was engraved into his memory forever. The comforting and nostalgic aroma of walnut strudel wrapping around the two, the taste of Barbancourt lingering on his tongue, the shake in his hands as he fumbled with the ring to place it on her finger. Whether it was from the nerves or the excitement he was wholly unable to tell. He couldn't help but laugh as he almost dropped it, offering a swift utterance of "Entschuldigung Sorry" as if he'd forgotten the English word for it. And then, success.
Something about the ring fulfilling its purpose made it shimmer, something about sealing the promise made caused it to glow against her skin.
He noticed her tears before he noticed the wetness of his own eyes as he stood once more, pulled into her fierce embrace, an unconscious smile curving his lips. Fabian's arms encircled the smaller woman, the woman who was now his fiancee, the woman with whom he had shared so much of his life and with whom he would share the rest.
After several long moments, he pulled back slightly, his hands coming up to gently cradle her face, wiping away remnants of tears as he blinked away his own. Even now his heart hammered in his chest, her 'yes' ringing through his ears. It sounded like bells. Fabian could not hold back the laugh that bubbled up from his chest. His joy had to be expressed somehow, and laughter was its preferred showing. "Thank you for making me the happiest man on earth, Sarai." He would thank her a thousand times over if he could. For all she had done for him, for the support and love. For the steadfast partner she has been to him. For this.
