Vale never dared to skip a challenge, especially one involving potions. With threats, excessive coddling and eagerness, Vale was able to scrape up two other people needed. Her very boyfriend Avery, and her fellow broom racing captain. She would have to note down later on finding ways to blackmail and turn the populace in fear of her once more. If she wanted to become feared by all, she had to ensure such. Having her name placed on a shiny, gold cauldron would be a wonderful start! According to Vale, that is.

Despite her eccentric behavior, she was oddly specific and orientated in her work. Her braids were tied up into a neat bun, and she was sure gloves were on her hands for each step. Though it did not stop her own rampant babbling.

"Hm! No much how much I object, they won't let me commit to a higher year task! Swooping Evils are child's play! We dealt with them constantly, do we not?" She yelped away, not considering if her team members were bothering to listen to her.

In the midst of her babbling, Vale was quick and efficient in throwing three sprigs of mint into her mortar, only to become distracted in her rambling again that she almost didn't notice Avery crushing the mint into paste as she scurried around the lab for more ingredients.

"Ashwinders! And we can't just let them burn things up! Do you know how beautiful a Ashwinder's arsonistic talents is? They burn everything up, all without a match needed! Who are we to stop their natural workings?" She threw a teaspoon of the paste into the cauldron, almost dancing along the team's little lab space as if she was committing to the culinary arts.

As she blabbled away in her search, Vale finally finished her scurrying when she grabbed out the ingredients needed for their planned potion. She placed the bursting mushrooms onto the table in front of Avery. She made a pleased noise when she found the salamander blood along with the wartcaps.

Vale placed the salamander blood off to the side, awaiting for the others to potentially catch up. She was usually one of the very first to complete potions in class. Very rarely did she ever fail to brew a potion correctly. It took herself some patience to slow herself down to let others catch up.

Slowness was never part of Vale's personality. Broom racing, searching the dorm floors for all sorts of creatures to allow her pet spider to devour before curfew hours, strangely finding herself stashes of needed ingredients for potions, and simply her very mouth.

"So, anyone got a list of people they wanna murder?" Vale was quick to distract herself by scavenging through the lab space even more unnecessarily. She appeared almost uncaring for returned answers to her own questions. She appeared to like answering ehr own questions.

"Personally, all my enemies been taken care of so far. The key is to having no witnesses!" Vale kept to her scurrying and nosey behavior as she lurked herself through shelves and racks of the various ingredients gifted to students to use. "Those lots live in the courtyard soil now! They did not deserve the taste of Ashwood fire! Especially that tax evading evil monster known as Madam Dollface, the Third! You remember that doll I was beating in the court yard, Avery? Haven't had to beat it again since!" Vale ended up finding herself in a cabinet to sniff around in, oddly proud of her younger years.

He had to admit, a potions championship wasn't his chosen method of competition. Mostly because Avery could never see himself winning one. What in the world were dried wartcaps? Why did the measurements and timing have to be so precise that he would be punished by explosion if he didn't do them with such exactment? Honestly, potions needed to stop being so sensitive and chill the hell out.

When Vale threatened asked him to join the potions championship with her and June, he thought he'd heard wrong. But his girlfriend seemed to have more confidence in him than he did in himself. Or, maybe she was just abundantly confident that she could right any wrong he committed. That was probably it. Knowing how important this was to Vale, he knew that his participation was the most he could offer to demonstrate his support. He had to be there when she won.

He understood completely why Vale had chosen June as a teammate. The two already seemed to get along fine as co-captains of the broom racing team, and Avery was eager to see their collaboration up close, just to understand Vale's broom racing life a bit better, and to get to know June, who was an important person within that life. From what he knew of her as a prefect, June Selwyn was the smart and reliable sort. Reflecting on their team now, Avery felt that maybe they did have a chance of winning this, after all. They had 66% successful talent to net out his 33% blunder -- did math work that way?

He crushed the mint into paste with the mortar and pestle, glad that Vale had already put in the ingredient he was supposed to crush into paste, because he might've started crushing the wrong thing. "Yeah, Swooping Evils! No big deal!" he responded instinctively, with no idea what they were. "They think they can swoop better than me on a broom? Fat chance!"

As Vale added 1 teaspoon of mint paste to the cauldron, he started slicing 2 Bursting Mushrooms before adding them to the cauldron. Next, he stirred the mixture 3 times, clockwise, careful to re-read the instructions at least twice beforehand to make sure he was doing it correctly.

It was fortunate that Vale had so much knowledge of ingredients and the energy to gather them. Avery could try, but he knew it would've taken him an hour to confirm what everything was and how much they needed. "You think Professor Regan would change my grade from an A to an O if we win?" he asked hopefully. "I didn't do so great on my last practical exam." Try as he might, sometimes our boy just couldn't quite make it.

Avery added 2 dried Wartcaps into the mortar and crushed it into a fine powder. "Who would I like to murder?" he asked thoughtfully, taking Vale's question very seriously, because murder was a serious business for Vale. "Unfortunately, no one comes to mind right now, which is such a pity, but maybe @Jack Burnett." If he had to choose someone. "I just got used to rooming with Hanako, and now the guy swoops in and takes my roommate from me. I don't know, I wonder if he was ever truly nice or was he just hiding an animalistic side to him all along?" He thought about this for a moment. It was nice talking to Jack on the bench in quidditch, and he seemed to be good friends with Flash, but making Hanako ditch Avery was not nice, and he felt like Jack had something to do with it.

"Oh yeah, that crazy doll. I love how all your enemies are in the ground. So brutal, so final," he said proudly.

Avery dumped all of the powder into the cauldron, and sat back to watch his teammates work on the rest of the potion. Maybe he could get used to this. Group potion-making was basically group bonding time while doing crafts.

[quote]"June, please join my potions crew with Avery! Or you'll have to sleep with one eye open every night!"

Most people are frightened with threats, but June has gotten over it. At this point, after racing and captaining with Vale Ashwood for so long, one simply gets used to it. And so while June was not afraid, she also knew Vale well enough to know the girl was serious, and June valued the little sleep she got nowadays. Potions crew, here we come.

June listened quietly as Vale complained about the ease of the task. She wasn't wrong, the racing teams dealt with these creatures on a regular basis, and ones much more intimidating to boot. Perhaps that was what gave June a confidence to compete in what was easily her weakest subject (even though she was an "E" student in potions. Still, for June, this was abysmal).

She waved her wand over the potion once Avery added Bursting Mushrooms, ensuring the heat was high enough as she began counting the 10 minutes needed for the potion to brew. She spent the time watching Vale and Avery, who she only recently learned were a couple. While at first she didn't understand the pair whatsoever, she began to understand their dynamic as she watched the two work together on their potion. Avery brought a certain logic to Vale's actions, while the co-captain clearly made Avery smile more than June had realized. An odd couple but a good match, she concluded.

Once the 10 minutes had passed, June lowered the heat to a slight simmer, clearing out of the way for Vale to add Salamander Blood.

"People I'd like to murder?" June thought, perhaps taking the question a bit more literally than intended. She didn't want to murder Finn, that would only create more problems. "Murder is the easy way out for your enemies," June concluded aloud. "It doesn't solve the issue, at least most of the time. It's not just."

Scary answer, but June saw no issue with it. It was an easy escape for those who have wronged you, and you're harming their loved ones more than your target themselves. They wouldn't even be around to see their family and friends grieve, so it ends in what, pointless pain? That was cruel, and wasn't even going to balance out the wrongdoing done to you.

Wartcaps now added to the potion, June let Vale count off 20 seconds, then immediately turned off the heat and stirred 7 times, clockwise (triple ensuring she was reading the correct direction from the recipe). With a wave of her wand over the cauldron, the potion was complete, and June added it to vials to store the concoction, not even bothering to protect her hands from the slightly searing heat. It was nice to feel something sometimes.
