| MENTIONINGEyes like swirling pools of warm honey, wide and unblinking, shined, captivated by the delicate tiny white feathers that danced through the air. The toddler reached up with his navy mittens, like a plant outstretching for the sun's light, trying to catch the tiny crystals. This task proved harder than he had signed up for, as the flakes were more elusive than the Cirrus had been led to believe. Every time he thought he had succeeded at wrapping his hands around one, he opened it to find his hands empty. The mousy brown-haired tot furrowed his eyebrows and scrunched his nose in frustration.
"호태아 뭐요?"1 Cirrus's grandfather chuckled as he watched the three-year-old hop around like a small rabbit.
Cirrus turned around his small face still wrinkled in tiny anger.
"할아버지, 눈송이를 잡으려고 할 때마다 눈송이가 자꾸 사라져요,"2 he mumbled kicking the snow, his head hanging low in disappointment.
He heartedly laughed at the child's naivety, shaking his head as he walked over, crouching down so now they were the same height. Looking into Cirrus's eyes reminded him of when he was his age, the two looked similar, save for the features of Cirrus's Scottish heritage peeking through. There was a small pause of silence as Cirrus's grandfather thought of what to say next.
"아시다시피 손자, 그건 눈송이가 물로 만들어졌기 때문이에요. 장갑이 너무 따뜻해서 너무 빨리 녹습니다,"3 He tried to explain in way a small child would understand. "혀로 잡을 수도 있고, 하늘에서 갓 나온 것이 가장 맛있습니다."4
The boy's annoyed face had been replaced with one of curiosity, his grandpa stood up opening his mouth and catching a snowflake.
"보다? 이제 태아 해봐,"5 He grinned his eyes scrunching into half moons, creating creases in the corners, highlighting his slight overbite.
Cirrus looked at the sky, the small dots sparkling in the sun as they fell in an other-worldly grace, defying the laws of gravity. Cirrus opened his mouth as a snowflake drifted towards him...
༺☆༻
He felt the ice particle melt on his tongue, Cirrus grinned, his eyes scrunching into half moons which highlighted how his teeth protrude slightly out of his mouth. He patted the large mass of snow in front of him as he finished his glittering impenetrable wall of snow, it is not impenetrable and looks extremely lopsided, as if done by a 5-year-old. Cirrus waddled behind his little shield of protection, quickly he dug his gloved hands into the snow, scooping a nice handful of it. He molded it into a ball, well as best as he could, Cirrus then peaked over the small glacier. A perfect target in his line of vision was a girl with red hair that seemed to glow against the white background. He grinned mischievously as he carefully aimed and threw the ball to the best of his ability, the snowball went flying... past the girl's head. Oh.

1. “Hotae what is it?”
2. “Grandpa, every time I try to catch a snowflake, it keeps disappearing.”
3. “You know, Grandson, that’s because snowflakes are made of water. The gloves are too warm, so they melt too quickly."
4. “You can catch it with your tongue, and it tastes best fresh out of the sky.”
5. "“See? Now Tae, try it.”
hotae is cirrus's middle name and serves as his korean name, so his grandparents and anyone in south korea refer to him as hotae.

Why was he outside again? He hated the winter, wasn't a huge fan of the cold snowy weather. Much rather preferring the cool winds and tones of fall, yet for whatever reason. His cat, Otis, seamed to be fascinated by the icy snows of winter. Oliver had noticed the way the feline looked out the windows in the corridors at the falling flakes. Eyes wide, ears straight up, normal signs that the cat wanted something. And Otis wanted winter. When he got the chance to, Oliver saw Otis on windowsills, pawing slightly at the window. Like he wanted out.
Because Otis was one of his favorite sentient things in the castle, (including people, ghosts, and portraits.) Oliver would give his cat the world if he so demanded it. He would take the cat out in the snow, despite not liking the weather himself. He'd been worried that the cold would have been to much for Otis, so he of course had to order something that might keep him warm. When browsing some magazines he'd found it. Perhaps the cutest thing he'd ever laid his eyes on.
A coat. For cats.
Only the necessities, If it would keep him warm it was necessary. He'd had his parents place the order from a wizard brand (Couldn't trust whatever things Muggles came up with) and they'd sent it to him that morning. That had been how he found himself outside, in the cold, holding Otis close to him, the cat dressed as an animal that was clearly not a cat. Wearing the earmuffs that Novalie had gifted him, as he would like to be warm to. Sadly the gift had been one of the best ones ever, so he just had to wear it. And really what were the chances of seeing the red headed Ravenclaw?
It had to be low, Otis's eyes were as large as saucers. The sight made him laugh a little. That laugh, quickly left his face, replacing his look with one of worry. As he jumped out of Oliver's arms. "Otis!" He called chasing after him, however carefully, he wasn't sure if there was ice lurking under the snow. "Get back here!" He called back, sure that he was ignoring him, Oliver huffed and followed on, the cat didn't seemed bothered by the cold, so at least the coat had been a good buy. Bright side Oliver, Bright side.
And- Damnit. Of course the cat got into trouble, dashing through the snow, running up to another student that was not himself. He was either really lucky, or really unlucky. He figured very un, lucky. As he knew this kid. Not well, but they'd talked on a few occasions. Cirrus Nam. If he remembered right, and he should. Having crafted baubles with him not but a week ago. As well as that boy crashing his birthday. If he was seeing things right, he'd just thrown a snowball and missed terribly. Crapppppppppp.
He did not want to get caught in the middle of that. He didn't bother trying to look at who Cirrus tried to hit, he could see her hair. Her being Novalie Moon. The girl instant that they were 'best friends' Oliver did not want that right now, having just wanted to take his cat for a walk, he stepped over the subpar 'fort' that had been crafted out of snow. Like the boys aim, it didn't look the best. Unlike at the errand he was dressed less obnoxiously, so Oliver didn't feel as- embarrassed, was the word he would be looking for -standing next to him.
He wordlessly picked Otis back up, the cat having rubbed his head and body on Cirrus's legs. In an affectionate manor. He looked Cirrus up and down, making for sure there was nothing abnormal about his outfit. Of course outfits were not 'abnormal' inherently, it was just Oliver's judgement on things. Once he deemed it acceptable, "Fancy seeing you here Cirrus." He said with a small nod. Otis letting out a small meow, as the cat jumped out of the Slytherin's hands again! and started to rub on Cirrus again. He acted like it didn't bother him. It did.
"I don't know why he's being like this," He said with a shake of his head. He wanted to just grab his cat and get out of there before he was, merlin forbid it, hit with a snowball. "My dormmate wouldn't believe it. She hates Otis." He said with a sigh, with how much his cat was around Cirrus. He could have sworn that he wanted to go to Cirrus's dorm that night. Instead of Oliver's own, with all the cats toys and treats. He sighed. "I hope he's not bothering you." He commented taking a sit in the snow. Yes it was cold, but he could deal with it. Were Otis went, Oliver was forced to follow so the kitty didn't get hurt. If that meant being with Cirrus for now, so be it.

So, what happens if she sticks her fingers into the snow and waits until they go completely numb?
The thought had come naturally to Novalie earlier, while she was building a snowman near the castle. The task had been a hassle with her oversized gloves, so she decided to take them off and use her bare hands. Unfortunately, they began to ache after just a few minutes of handling the cold snow.
The sensation reminded her of a classmate from her school days in London - a boy with an eye-patch who loved sharing curious stories.
One in particular stood out, which was: if you held on long enough, he had claimed, the pain would eventually fade, leaving your hands numb, as though you’d simply killed it.
Now, as Novalie wandered through the castle grounds, leaving footprints in the thick snow, she glanced down at her already red and trembling hands.
Maybe she should give it a try. Surely, the girl wouldn’t actually damage her fingers, right? And even if something did go wrong, the school nurse could probably fix it anyway.
There was nothing to lose!
Just as the Ravenclaw was about to crouch down, ready to plunge her hands into the snow, something suddenly whizzed past her head! Startled, Novalie’s eyes widened and she blinked a few times before realizing what had happened. When it clicked, a broad grin spread across her face-
That was an invitation!
She spun around and spotted what she deemed an impressive snow fort - a structure she and her friends back home would have been proud of. They used to pretend they were defending medieval castles, fighting a noble rebellion against a tyrant king and his loyal dogs.
Peeking over the fort’s snowy wall was a face she recognized, not just from passing in the corridors but also from Ollie’s birthday party in November. Cirrus, was it? He’d seemed kind and now, with this playful challenge, he’d proven himself fun too!
Brimming with excitement, Novalie dropped to her knees, scooping up as much snow as she could in her chilled hands. She quickly rolled it into a nearly perfect snowball and hurled it at her attacker without a second thought, making it crash right into his face!
Giggling, Novalie scrambled behind a nearby tree, peeking out with a mischievous grin as she awaited his next move.
Just as she did that however, a flash of familiar blonde hair caught her eye. Was that-?
“Ollie?!”
She laughed in delight, waving at him,
“I see you’ve teamed up with Cirrus! Very bold of you!”.
Unable to contain her excitement, Novalie crouched down again, quickly rolling another snowball in her hands.
“This one will be for you!”

Battle of the Ice
Date - 8/12/24
Snow soaked Anella’s bell bottom jeans, yet she’s used to it. Living in an area as snowy as England during winter got her used to these trivial troubles, like the cold seeping in through her pretty beige jacket and her jeans absolutely ruined. Don’t mind the fact that her hair is still a windy mess from her initial waking up- she’s presentable enough. Her boots left little footprints behind her, and she always found it amusing. Anybody could track her down using just those - it was like seeing the past in the present.
She was more of a fan of the summer. The sun felt kinder, the stars felt brighter, and the heat made the nights she spent alone a little kinder. She wouldn't need to lug this big goofy coat around, and she could go to the pool, and of course - no school! Her hands rested deep in her pockets, shielding themselves from the cold due to her forgetfulness. Who’ll remember to pack gloves in the middle of august? She’ll bring them when she visits dad in a few weeks. She missed the dim glow of their apartment, and was excited at the prospect of inviting Sandy over the Christmas break. She has a creeping feeling her dad will love Sandy.
She spotted a familiar place as she wandered around the school grounds, a fellow hufflepuff she remembered from the baubles workshop. Was it… it was Cirrus! Next to him Oliver, and not far from them a girl getting ready to attack with a bright white little ball of snow in her hands. Anella took a second to admire her hair, a bright red, but not like a carrot. More of like an apple, or a strawberry type of red. Oh, fresh fruit, just another amazing thing about summer. She brought one of her hands up to her mouth, warming them with her breath while also hiding her amused smile. She’d pay to see that bumhead that Oliver is getting soaked in snow, and here she’s about to have it for free. Not that she’s got anything really against him - she respects him a lot for his work in potions class, his passion matching her own. He’s just a bit prickly, is all, but it looks like this stereotypical hufflepuff that is Cirrus is managing to melt the ice kings frozen little heart… Was that a cat? Holy smokes it’s a cat in a deer coat. The blonde girl crouches down, knees to chest, careful not to fall butt-first into the snow and stars doing the little “ppsspp” sound that’s supposed to call cats over.

Jan Dehoff had no idea what he was doing. One moment, he was chilling in the Ravenclaw common room, eating some chocolate cookies, and the next thing he knew, he was heading outside the Hogwarts castle with Ruth, whom he had asked to join on a snowy walk. It’s been a while since he had a pleasant walk with Ruth, as she mostly stayed indoors due to the weather conditions that made it difficult for such activity, yet convincing her to come along was a less effort to Jan. He was somewhat grateful that he doesn’t really have to bribe her with anything, just a small nudge and in an instant, they made it happen.
“Hey,” he spoke up after a moment of silence, turning his head to his friend. He noticed that she was busy admiring the snowflakes dancing in the air, one landing lightly on her palm. The next thing he knew, she slightly pulled down her scarf to get a taste of it, and that’s when he stopped his track. “Ruth, you’re not supposed to do that,” Jan sighed at the sight, “Snowflakes aren’t edible." Ruth eventually stopped doing it, and so, he continued on walking in the cold, this time with his thoughts weaving together to make a plan for the sooner winter break.
“Well,” he spoke up again once his mind had settled on a plan, somewhat. “Are you planning to go home for winter break?” By that time, they were passing through the many students who were having fun in the snow, some were building a snowman of their own, some were lying down, making snow angels, and some were bursting out laughter as they exchanged throwing snowballs. The atmosphere was quite playful, unlike the merely quiet mode he shared with Ruth, but all of these winter outdoor activities didn’t draw him in. Jan was content to let them enjoy their fun, and so he trudged further along with Ruth beside him. Unbeknownst to them, there was another snow fight happening on their way...

Battle of the Ice

𝕽uth Fairchild was very much awed by the snow. And very cold.
When had she last gone out? November? It’s only been a week,Ruth thought to herself, spinning around as she gazed upwards. But to Ruth, it felt like years. She walked almost every single day. Then winter came, and it wasn’t the winter Ruth was used to, oh no. It was full on snow, full on cold, full on ice. She had heard that even the Great Lake was nearly frozen, or was it? Oh well. That must have been a beautiful sight. After this, she wasn’t planning on coming out anytime soon. Maybe during the holidays, or if she really had to. Even better if she went out at January, when it was actually starting to get warmer.
But Jan had requested for the walk, which surprised Ruth. It had usually been her, after all, doing the asking. She glanced at the boy, then went back to admiring the falling snowflakes. Whatever it was that he asked her out for, it was bound to be complementary to a freezing walk. Deciding to make things interesting, Ruth went ahead and stuck out her tongue, feeling one flake fall on to the tip. She shivered slightly, then smiled. The tiny bit of frost had left a subtle stinging sensation that numbed her tongue, but it didn’t last very long before it melted into water.
“Ruth, you’re not supposed to do that,” chided the other, and Ruth grinned at him, sticking out her tongue to catch some more and crunching them rather loudly. Ruth had seen a couple of students do this when she was in the library, looking out. If they weren’t edible, why would so many have done that? “It’s just water, Jan. Beautifully shaped water.” There didn’t seem to be any harm in doing it. Her mouth was growing increasingly colder, though, so she stopped. “So what did you want to talk about?”
She watched his ask, then shook her head. Throwing her hands to the back of her head, she said, “Nope—”, ending it with a loud pop “I told my parents it’d be great to stay and get to know the school better. I’ve only ever been going to the library, which isn’t even a big portion of the school.” It was true. Her parents had insisted for her to come back home, begged even, trying to reason with the fact her siblings missed her dearly (and also that Ace was beginning to follow Aaron around, claiming rocks to have the souls of birds droppings, which pissed him off).
But no, she wasn’t going anywhere. “And what about you? I hope not. Mm, that sounds a bit selfish. I meant—” A ball of snow whizzed past her, and she heard a loud SPLAT. Whipping around, Ruth gasped as the crushed ice slid down Jan’s face. Her shoulders shuddered as she held in a laugh, until the look he gave wasn’t funny at all.
Frowning, she turned back around to address a group of students playing snow. “Which one of you threw the snowball at Jan?” she demanded, narrowing her eyes as she looked down at each one, landing on a boy with wavy brown hair and a dimpled grin. Hm, well, based on the angle of the throw, though it was pretty fast, it couldn’t have been anyone close to us, which was the other three students crowding around him. He stood further than the rest, and Jan had been in his direct view.
Whether or not he had been aiming at Jan didn’t matter. Ruth let out a small smile. She had been meaning to use the Weasley shop’s enchanted snowball ever since she got her hands on it. “Oh, boy,” she said to herself, then raised her voice, her arm rising up at the same time. “You’re in for a treat!” That said, she sent the enchanted snowball flying straight towards the boy’s face.

| MENTIONINGCirrus's face wrinkled, scrunching in utter disgust and disappointment by his failed attempt of an ambush. As the other first-year came to terms with what had just happened, Cirrus felt a warm and soft brushing against his legs. Startled he looked down to see the MOST ADORABLE LOOKING CAT he had ever seen, it was a ginger tabby in a reindeer outfit, Cirrus felt his heart melt! He could've sworn that at this point he wouldn't even need a coat anymore, he just wanted to SQUEEZE IT! But before Cirrus could do anything the cat was yanked up, he quickly looked up to be met with eyes that the ocean itself would be jealous of, eyes he recognized. Oliver? He and the other boy were slowly having more run-ins with one another, was this what his mother would call fate?
"Fancy seeing you here Cirrus," The boy said in his usual grumpy demeanor, honestly he was just like Grumpy Bear from Care Bears in his opinion. Oliver always looked as if someone had ate all his cookies from his cookie jar, if that had happened to Cirrus he would be pretty grumpy too. Even if that wasn't the actual cause for the blonde's constant resting grump face.
Cirrus just shot his arm up in an awkward attempt of a wave, the cat escaped Oliver's arms once more continuing what it was doing before further causing fireworks in Cirrus's heart. He then suddenly remembered the Nova. It had only been around a minute and before Cirrus could process what to do next, the fiery-haired girl took a scoop of snow with her BARE hands she was an absolute beast! and threw it straight back at him. By her incredible speed, you would think that the two were playing tennis! All Cirrus could do was watch helplessly as the ball of snow hurtled toward his face, he felt a quick sting of cold as the throw made contact. Cirrus stood awkwardly, almost like an NPC, as the girl ducked behind a tree, he grinned quickly diving back behind his horrid great fortress. It... was... ON!!!!
Cirrus then took his plaid scarf, slinging it quickly over both his shoulders so that he wouldn't have to worry about it getting in the way of the ensuing battle, also it helped him keep warm as it covered half his face. He didn't hear any of what else Oliver had said, it was kind of hard to hear him as he got gobsmacked by a snowball.
"A will protect ye yer hichness!"1 Cirrus promised picking up the cat with the most serious expression, before quickly putting the cat back down, getting ready to throw another snowball. The girl yelled something, but he didn't hear her as he was too busy preparing. Cirrus then attempted once more to hit the perpetrator Nova with his ball of ice, but he missed... AGAIN! But the snowball did hit something, the face of another student, a boy with dusty brown hair. Oh, he didn't mean to hit someone in the face! Cirrus always tried to aim at the body, but to be fair he did have terrible aim. The other student who had been walking with the accidental hit, a girl with long black hair, wasted no time to return the favor. Another snowball collided with the Hufflepuff's face, ow. Cirrus puffed out his cheeks, now more serious than ever he HAD to protect this sweet little animal from all these enemies! He quickly grabbed another snowball ready to fire away.
