Someone had once informed him that the sorting ceremony went on for hours.
Rhys couldn't remember who it was, of course. He'd slept since then. What he did remember, what kept playing through his mind as the queue moved was the explaination that both his parents had given him of what would happen during the ceremony and what each of the four houses were. Their words were constantly playing in his head as the line moved. It felt like hours, it probably had been. Rhys didn't quite know how many students there were, but it felt like thousands.
Both of his parents had been at Hogwarts, a witch and wizard sorted into Gryffindor. If he remembered correctly, that was the red and gold one. Scarlet and gold actually, his dad had drilled it into him that the house colours of Gryffindor were scarlet and gold. The green and silver one was Slytherin, that one he knew for certain. The blue and bronze one was likely to be Ravenclaw which left the yellow and black one as Hufflepuff, recognisable because of the badger on the flag.
He offered a chuckle to himself in the queue. His mother would have been impressed he'd actually listened and learnt something. He'd paid attention when he was being told about houses though because they actually mattered. A Hogwarts house was the closest thing you had to a family. His dad's closest friends had come from his Hogwarts house, even his wife had come from his Hogwarts House.
The young student had done some reading into the Hogwarts houses, studied as much about them as he could and had ended up paying particular interest to Hufflepuff. Something about the badgers had caught his eye, he just felt like he related to them on a level. They seemed just as laid back about life as he did.
"HETHERINGTON, RHYS"
Funnily enough, he hadn't even realised how far the line had moved until he heard his name get shouted. It was loud enough and caught him off guard enough that he actually jumped a little. It took him a few seconds to realise it was even his name that had been shouted an awkwardly long few seconds more to realise it was his name being shouted.
Then he had to do the walk up to the stool and the hat and you best believe he put as much confidence into it as possible. He strolled up to that hat like it was the most important walk he would ever do in his life and he had no idea if it came off that way but in his head it did and that was all that mattered.
Perching on the stool, he felt the hat placed upon his head and he took a breath. He wasn't exactly sure what the hat said, in all honesty he wasn't listening he was just doing everything in his power to wish for Hufflepuff. He had his heart set on the badgers, they were so like him he was almost certain that's where he'd get placed.
"RAVENCLAW"
He took a breath, and had to blink. Within seconds he found that he was on his feet and was just following the sounds of the clapping. He'd been so certain he'd been placed with the Hufflepuffs. He didn't know what had changed or had gone wrong, but he wasn't happy about it.

The moment Azzure walked into the Great Hall it felt like she had entered a whole nother universe. The once bleak and inky lake had become a bustling hall with 4 tables perfectly framing the center aile where hundreds of first years were being sorted. The whole room felt so surreal, even though she by all acounts was the last one in, that didn't stop her from jumping whenever a flying ghost would come out of a portrait, or stop the way her eyes glinted with adoration at the way the floating candles framed the perfect painting of joy and sadness, a true mending of 2 words as if the whole world stopped in this moment of time so that each and everyone of the first years could have this moment in the spotlight.
However as enthralling as this whole situation was, and as bizare as it is, as the line of unsorted first years slowely started to dwindle, and people began forming cliques and meeting friends, the night started to become a little... mundane.
And thats no fun, tonight is supposed to be a night of joy, and new beginings. I mean we litterally have the rest of. our lives to be mundane, just look at the teachers! Trying their hardest to stay awake and clap along with each new student. Azzure hated it, it felt so forced.
Almost as if a flip has switched in her brain, the once bright and lively and etherial hall started to look like nothing more than those boring 'pure blood parties' she used to be forced to attend by her parents. Everything felt so utterly fake.
This was when Azzure realised that maybe Hogwarts wasn't just some legend in the books. It just another school. But just because something is a school doesnt mean it has to be like this. If she was gonna be here for the next 7 years, you bet your ass she's gonna make the most of it. Starting today in-fact.
"AZZURE SOLACE." The headmaster shouted out her name, a smirk appearing on her face as she made her way to the stool in the middle knowing her plan was now a go.
Azzure immediatly sat up in the chair, looking foward to the crowd as the Sorting Hat was lowered onto her head. It was almost as if she could hear the voice of her mother in her ear, 'Don't show your emotions.' 'be confident even when you aren't.' 'You are the heir of our family.'
"Mhmm... You're intresting. The will of a lion with the cunningness of a snake. Where should I put you, hm?" The Sorting hat said, its voice old and grainy, like opening a good old book that was still in good shape after 20 years. To be honest, the seriousness of the situation and the fact that even the all wise hat didn't know what to do with her only egged her on to continue with the whole ploy to make tonight a bit more... fun.
"Oh? You've seen through me already? You're much wiser than I thought for some 'hat.' Are you that obsessed with me that you have 'oh so such a hard time?'
I said, my voice filled with sarcasm and dramaticism as I half mocked, half flirted with the poor 'ol sorting hat.
"Oh, I see... GRYFFINDOR!" The sorting hat shouted with conviction, causing a burst of giggles to release out of my mouth, my body tipping back on the stool as I laughed.
"Awhh, you're no fun. Thanks though, I do like the color red."
And with that, I let The head master take the sorting hat of my head before I strode off to join the Gryffindor table. Smiling at them before silently sitting down amongst the table of the brave and mighty. In all honesty, Azzure can't tell you why she was sorted into Gryffindor, if anyone would have asked her, she would say with confidence that she would be a Slytherin, but eh. The world works in mysterious ways i guess. Perhaps this is simply a stepping stone for her true journey, whatever that may be.

The Great Hall sure was... Great. William was at a loss for words as he followed the train of eleven year olds down the giant hall. This might be the biggest room William had ever been in and the enchanted ceiling only helped the illusion. It felt like all eyes were on him as he shuffled along. He could feel curious eyes bore into the back of his neck, somewhere in the back of his mind he knew that there was no way that everybody was staring at him in particular, however, it was hard to think clearly. William was so busy staring up into the starry sky that he almost tripped into the kid in front of him as the train came to a sudden halt.
William could feel his heart racing and cheeks heaat up slightly as he stared straight ahead into the neck of the kid in front of him. He refused to make eye contact, even if a few of the kids around him were whispering excitedly about what house they were going to be placed in. William didn't really care too much about houses. He knew that all houses had their own great story. He had read through Hogwarts, a history during the summer after all. His mother had been so excited when they recieved the letter that she had ran to fetch her old school books. Most of it had been incomprehensible to William. What was he supposed to do with Charms 1 if he didn't even have a wand yet? The only thing that had seemed slightly interesting was Hogwarts a history. Good thing the weather in august had been terrible, giving William just enough time to finish the darn thing.
"William Cross!"
William flinched. He had been too lost in his mind. Had people already been sorted into their houses? He meakly made his way up onto the podium and sat down on the chair. The sorting hat was placed onto his head and it immediately sank down over his face, knocking his glasses aside.
William tried to not think. Did he have a preference? Ravenclaw might be fun. That was the house his mother was sorted into. It could probably aid him in his conquest to find the origin of magic. The Gryffindor table had immediately put him off since they had been too loud. But in reality, who wouldn't want to be in Gryffindor? That is where heroes are made after all. Hufflepuff he hadn't thought about much. Their connection with nature and animals seemed nice, however, he wasn't too interested in plants. Slytherin? That's where most dark wizards emerged from, right? Cunning, ambitious people. His mother had warned him that Slytherin students could be mean and cold and they she was certain that "her little boy" would never end up in such a place. Oh the look on his mother's face would have been wonderful if he was sorted into...
"SLYTHERIN!" The sorting hat roared.
William's eyes widened. He had been so sure that he would be put into Ravenclaw! The hat hadn't even said anything! Wasn't the hat supposed to talk to you? The hat was lifted from his head and he swiftly jumped down from the stool, correcting his glasses and looking towards the Slytherin table. They were all yelling and applauding, clearly happy to have another member. William hurried towards them, a grin making it's way onto his face as he thought about the fun letter he was going to write to his mother.

Avery nervously walked into a hall full of people. She was shocked at the beauty of it with the candles hanging down and the students patiently waiting for the first years to arrive. Avery followed the first years in front of her, and made sure to not mess up. Especially with all these people in the room.
Avery watched as students in front of her were chosen. As the line grew closer, she became more nervous. What house will I get? Will my parents be happy? These thoughts flew across her mind as she watched fellow students get sorted into their houses.
As Avery waited, she though back to the stories her parents had told her about this place. They said it was the best thing that happened to them because it was where they met. Two kids looking for friends in a place where magic was available. Avery sighed at the thought. She would finally get her chance to make real friends instead of having to worry about slipping. Muggles were never easy to work with. Especially when they want to know everything about your life.
Then Avery thought about what classes she would attend. She was excited to take all of them, but, most of all, she wanted to take Transfiguration. Every since she was little, she was fascinated by how an object can be transformed into another object. Of course, Avery knew it wasn't as easy as a flick of the wand. It took lots of practice and the mindset to do it. Avery was as excited for Defense Against the Dark Arts. This class would really help her prepare for her auror training. She knew she wanted to be it. Especially after some of the cases he told her about. The thrill of chasing down someone to protect people inspired Avery. She was eager to get chosen, so she could feel at least a step closer to that fate.
Finally she heard her name.
"Avery Gray!"
Avery slowly walked towards the hat. Eager, but also very nervous. Now was the time to find out which house she would be sorted into. It was a scary thought in a sense because she didn't know what house would be chosen for her.
Avery thought about what house she wanted. She wanted Gryffindor because her parents both were in that house, but she didn't know if she was brave or courageous enough to be one of them yet. Then she thought about Ravenclaw. She had thought of it before, but didn't know what to think of it. She did enjoy reading books, but she didn't think she was smart enough. Then she thought about Slytherin. That was the house she gave really no thought to. Her father warned her that some people that came out of there were dangerous. Finally, she thought about Hufflepuff. It was another house she didn't know much about. She didn't think she would get sorted there, though.
GRYFFINDOR! The sorting hat roared out to the crowd.
Avery was shocked when she heard that word come out of the hat. She glanced over and saw all the Gryffindors standing and cheering for her. As she walked over they made room for her, and were still congratulating her on getting chosen to be there.
She finally felt a weight lift off of her chest. She had gotten the house she always wanted, and she would hopefully find a good place there. It also helped her get a step closer to her dream. Getting into the auror training program and become an auror just like her dad did. That was worth the wait.

Sorting Ceremony

Ruth Fairchild was unable to predict which house she would be sorted into.
As she stood in line waiting for her turn (rather patiently), she took in as much information of the four houses. The song that the sorting hart belted out was really lovely and pleasant to listen to, and the facts about the four founders of Hogwarts was something she eagerly acknowledged. Still, despite all the murmurings and observations, Ruth was stumped.
Well, what house would she like to be in? Slytherin is definitely not for me, she thought to herself. The house held the sly and cunning, traits Ruth found herself admiring but never properly seeking. What about Gryffindor? The brave, the prideful. She shook her head again. Sure, she would count herself as courageous, but she would never dare to step up to a challenge so easily! That left her with two houses: Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff.
Ruth cast a long look in the direction of both houses. Ravenclaw’s a sea of blue painted on collars, postures straight. What had the song said about them? Oh, yes, where those of wit and learning will always find their kind. A small smile perched on the young girl’s face. A table full of people who were eager to learn, just like her. Perhaps that would be the suitable house for her.
She then turned to look at the other, honeycomb coloured scarfs and beams as sweet as honey. It was a mesmerisingly peaceful sight to gaze at them. From the distance, Ruth could still sense their pre sense, a purposeful aura that blended kind and passion together. She could see herself sitting with them, laughing along and relishing the congratulatory pats that would rain down on her. Unease pitted herself in the stomach. She was back to rock bottom, again.
“Ruth Fairchild!” Ruth jolted, and looked up to find the sorting hat waiting for her, his indented eyes fixed on the girl. Worries of which house she would get into faded away and was replaced by an overwhelming sense of self-consciousness as she clambered up the stairs to plop herself down on the seat.
The sorting hat nestled comfortably down on her hair, and it hummed with thought. Ruth’s mind was begging to become overflowed with thoughts, but she chided it to settle down. The sorting hat, in turn, chuckled. “No, child.” he thrummed. “Let them come.”
Let them come.
The hall was silent and waiting. Ruth, herself, shuffled nervously on the stool, clenching her hands into fists, one of her nervous tics. After what felt like forever, the sorting hat parted its mouth, and Ruth held her breath.
“HUFFLEPUFF!” The sorting hat roared, and the great hall erupted into cheers, the Hufflepuff table thundering. Ruth, still dazed, walked over to them, a doozy grin taking up most of her face.

Jade was overwhelmed as she walked into the hall. Its size struck her, of course - it was so big, and there were so many people - but what really grabbed her attention was the magical air to the place. Candles hung in the air, casting their warm light around the room. Floating candles, Jade thought, amazed. I wonder what else magic can do. Her wondering was soon answered when the hat the Headmaster presented began talking. Talking! Despite her nerves, Jade smiled. It all seemed a little ridiculous - but it was all real, and she was here, and maybe she could learn to like this place.
Of course, Jade's nervousness began creeping back in as the hat began to sing its song. She didn't know anything, really, about Hogwarts - but it certainly seemed like the various houses were an important part of it. Jade did her very best to focus on the hat's song, trying to take in the information as best she could. Gryffindor is the brave house, Ravenclaw is the clever one, Hufflepuff is loyal, and Slytherin is ambitious... Jade wasn't sure which house she would end up in - she didn't feel particularly like any of the house's traits at the moment - but she at least wanted to know what all the different houses were.
The hat's song finished, and children began getting called to get sorted. Jade fidgeted nervously as she awaited her turn. She hadn't realized that she had to go up in front of everyonefor the sorting... Unease gathered in the pit of her stomach as she anxiously awaited her turn.
"Jade O'Reilly!" Jade jolted in surprise at hearing her name, and looked to see that the hat was waiting for her. Oh, dear... Swallowing, Jade walked up to the chair and took a seat, conscious of everyone's eyes on her. The hat settled onto her head, and she was a bit startled when it began speaking in her mind. Hmm, what do we have here... Interesting... very interesting... You are certainly brave, venturing into this new world. And you seem very determined - ambitious, even! How interesting... Where would you like to be put, child?
Put me wherever you feel I'll fit best, Jade thought nervously. I don't really mind. I just want to learn more about this new world, and my powers. And maybe find a place here.
Well, that settles it, then! You'll make a great RAVENCLAW! The hat shouted the last word out for everyone to hear. The hall erupted into cheers, the Ravenclaw table clapping and smiling. Attempting a smile of her own, Jade hesitantly walked over to the table. Her house didn't really matter all that much, after all - Jade was just glad that she was here.

Yakim never thought he can be anymore exciting that he is right now, He can see four table filled with many many student aboding their respectfully house uniform filling the big room with four section of bright color. Above them spread hundred of floating candles matching the magical night sky with their stars. What can he say other that it grandiose. Upon entering the Grand Hall he see close to the entry a somewhat imposing, standing a bit over six foot, grey haired wizard with a full beard and dark, stormy eyes. He was wearing a armor, with heavy metal plate wrapped in an embossed leather that while definitely worn with evidence of repair that appeared to be well cared for.
He definitely the Head Master, if he remember correctly the description his sibling told him when they were in school. Talking about sibling he saw his older sister in the far right on the Hufflepuff table waving happily toward him. He immediately wave back as happily as she was, he can tell she was saying something because of the moving lip she did. "Good luck" Was what he decrypt. He don't really think luck have anything to do with being sorting to a house but he will noteless take it.
Arrive at the front of a podium with a table full of professor behind he hear a loud noise that was coming from the giant door who close the moment the last student enter. Not a moment later the Head Master walk down the hallway with a imposing aura demanding silent without being ask. It wasn't terrified it just give the feeling that he is a wizard who deserve respect. He begin to do his speech with a slight interruption. That must be the famous hat. After the speech the hat begin to sing a type of song that resume the forth house. Everyone clap a the end of the song. He could feel the trilled buzzing feeling under his skin, he wonder if it is his magic that response to his feeling or just a sensation his head create. The call of children name start, he know he going to wait a little while since the letter of his family name began with a N but even knowing that it doesn't reduce his enthusiastic mood. I wonder would I be a Hufflepuff like Father and Ophiane or Would I be a Ravenclaw like Mother and Édeor? Maybe I -
Yakim Nëlo
Bloody Merlin I zone out again. He hastily walk toward the Head Master and they loke eyes. When he expect him to immediately avoid his gaze he held it firmly without blinking and smile to him. It is a bit childish of him to think of that about them, they are not the Head Master for nothing. As he sat the Head Master put the hat on his head.
Mmmm.... A Nëlo... Your family have quite various range of household. Although mostly in Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff. Well except for your older Brother Inax. He was....quite a handfuls child.
He sweet drop little bit, they are not wrong.
And you little one, do you think to fallow your old family tradition, or you going to be like your brother?
There was nothing wrong with any house he may end up, it would not be a adventure if it doesn't have a little risk in it. But it was a risk he was willing to take if it to know more about the world.
I see...Mmm...Maybe....Yes...That It !
GRYFFINDOR!!!
He can hear a roar from that table and clapping hand from other. It was official the house he would reside for the next seven year was bestowing to him. The house of lion for their brave and prideful attitude.
So Hogwarts, what prey are you going to give for my restless mind?

word count 551 ───────────────────────────────────────────── • 01/09/24Through a pair of giant wood-made double doors, Jan could see four long tables decorated in each of their representative colours—red, blue, green, yellow. He was dazzled and curious by how each table managed to stretch out for thousands of students to sit without getting crammed. What was even more impressive to him was the ceiling above, which was a living mirror of a starry night sky.
The scurrying ceased as they reached the far end of the hall, where an old, scruffy-bearded man stood on the platform, next to a stool where a dusty hat perched. His appearance was striking, not because of his age (not to assume that Jan knew anything about him, he has no idea who he is until introduction), but rather because he wore an entire suit of armour that looked heavy and outdated. Jan was half-convinced that he had stepped into a historical reenactment of King Arthur's era or something like that.
As if that wasn't strange enough, the Sorting Hat began to sing a lively, off-key tune about the four houses after the armoured headmaster, who goes by the name Solomon Lear, introduced himself and finished his short speech. Well, this just keeps getting odder, doesn’t it? He questioned himself in his head while clapping along with the others once the patched and frayed hat finished singing his song. I hope not.
After that, it was time for the first years to be sorted into one of the houses. The chatter and applause following each student's placement barely registered to him, his head spinning ever so slightly as he stood motionless, hearing one name after another was called.
To be fair, he didn’t really care which house the hat decided to toss him into.. Maybe with the exception of Ravenclaw after hearing its song. He had already come to terms with the fact that he didn’t fit in well with their reputation of being witty and knowledgeable. The Sorting Hat’s verdict was met with cheers, and the dizzying sensation of waiting began to creep much more until—
“Dehoff, Janosch!”
Jan was relieved that he was one of the many names that've been called up early. If the headmaster had decided to call names in alphabetical order by first names, he would have stood nauseously still for god knows how long the sorting ceremony will take with a hundred first years (or perhaps even more, after seeing the long scroll of parchment) gathering around like a herd of lambs.
With all the eyes on him and some encouraging words from the fellow first years he acquainted with during their journey to the castle, Jan went up to the platform and sat stiffly on the old, creaking stool, wanting this to get done quickly, but the Sorting Hat had a different idea. It settled heavily over his head for a long time before it raucously shouted “RAVENCLAW!”
A thunderous cheer erupted from the table draped in blue and bronze as Jan rose from the stool to join his new house, still reeling from the Sorting Hat’s sudden declaration. He couldn't help but hope at least one or two of the familiar faces he knew would end up in the same house as him, but alas, he'll have to see where this sorting ceremony will head to.

Sorting Ceremony
The Great Hall was alive with chatter and excitement as the first years filed in. Amber felt a rush of nervousness overcome her, she knew what was about to happen, the acclaimed Sorting Ceremony. The ragged, floppy little thing of a hat sat alone on its stand, almost waiting for the first years to put it on.
One by one students were called, Amber knew it would be her turn soon. The student before her, Janosh Dehoff, was called up, Amber watched him with wide eyes as he confidently sat on the stool. The was place on his head, and the whole room was silent. Suddenly the hat called out “RAVENCLAW!” in a loud, deep voice. A ripple of applause surged from the Ravenclaw table as Jan joined them. Amber’s heart was racing, soon her name would be called, What would she do? Was she supposed to say something? On and on like this until she heard her name called.
Wren, Amber!
Amber stood, legs shaky, and walked slowly to the stool. She sat down, as the Hat was placed on her head. For a few seconds, there was only silence as it probed her mind.
“Ah… a curious one. Always questioning, always searching for the why behind everything. Your mind is sharp, but there’s hesitation. You second-guess yourself, unsure of your own abilities. Yet I see potential, a quiet strength, and a deep need to understand the world.”
Amber felt her nerves calm a little as the Hat spoke. It was right—she often worried that she wasn’t enough. But the Hat’s words felt comforting, not critical.
"Ravenclaw!" the Hat declared.
Amber’s heart soared as the applause rang out. As she walked down the aisle to the Ravenclaw table, where her new house greeted her, she was met with warm smiles. Amber felt a buzzing in her mind, this was a new beginning, a new story to unfold in her life at Hogwarts. She was excited to learn.

Sorting Ceremony
And here we go...
While the boy could never be considered large next to his peers, the throng of novices he found himself in the middle of made him feel rather small. He felt smaller, still, as they walked into the Great Hall - there had been ample mentions of various important places in Hogwarts, A History, the sheer grandiosity of the space before him made him reel for about ten seconds. He could hardly tell where the ceiling was, and it seemed as though there were a million somethings that flew around the air above his head. He nervously thumbed the family ring on his index finger, comforted by the familiar ridges and swirls of the Acheampong crest.
The fact that he was the first Acheampong to attend Hogwarts was far from lost on him. Even his father had not known much to tell him about the English school - they both learned and shared plenty of new things from their readings. It never had to be said, but his papa had been sure to give him the traditional African-migrant-parent-to-child speech - while long and peppy, it boiled down to the same lesson that Kojo had heard and internalized much over the years: "Put some elbow grease into it." So long as he did what he could to put his best foot forward, that he tried until he could try no more, then everything would work as it was meant to.
Here, however, he was already lost on first to apply that lesson to. He knew what the books said about each of the Houses, but his family bore no allegiance to any one as many English families would. He was a blank slate, which had its advantages and disadvantages - he had the potential to do well anywhere, with nothing that held him back or might sway him away from potential fulfilled... But he was an unknown face with an unknown name, he would be the first of his lineage to make a mark on this scho--
"Kojo Acheampong." He had not even realized that he was far into his own head, the Sorting Ceremony had already started. There was complete silence as people looked around and waited for movement. His breath hitched in his throat as a path to the Headmaster and the Sorting Hat opened the second he took a step... He didn't stop, one foot in front of the other, until he was in front of the towering, metal-clad man. Kojo's first instinct, indicated by the twitch of his left hand, was to take out his reading glasses to study the Headmaster's armor - he didn't know people still wore actual, functional armor.
Kojo followed the soft smile and nod of Headmaster Lear's to the seat, where he moved and sat down, and waited. The Sorting Hat, while large, sat gently on top of his curls, and he heard it speak to him.
"You're the first Acheampong to be sorted, nay, to even step foot into Hogwarts... And yet, you are squarely focused on wanting to study an old suit of armor." If the hat chuckled, it was at how children continued to surprise it with their quirks.
"Okay, but hear me out... Why's he got the armor on, is there something special about it? How old is it? It doesn't look brand-new, has it seen combat? Has he seen combat? With swords? Why would a wizard wear armor, has it been charmed? What kind of char--"
"RAVENCLAW!"
