xxxxx The first step Albrecht took as headmaster was to establish an office. He could not bring himself to work in the office of the late headmistress and so he took a spare room down in the dredges of the castle, near the bottom floors. He quickly moved his items in, a desk, a bookshelf, some keepsakes from his previous careers. The place was dusty and though he cleaned the room thoroughly, there was still a sense of age in the place. However, this feeling of ancientness fit Albrecht and the knicknacks that filled the place filled the office with a sense of whimsical yet austere sentiment. The room was split in two, one side with his desk, raised a little higher than the rest. Filled with a bookcase and fancy chairs, it looked new and pristine. The other side was bluish, old, filled with items and paintings left behind from long ago. It was a good memory of those that came before, so Albrecht left the items exactly where they were, including a wooden carving of a lonely owl. A fireplace kept the place warm and as time would go by, perhaps there would be papers scattered along the desk, a drink spilled upon the couch, a book open by the students that would visit or by the headmaster himself. It was a divisive room, one side, one side old. There was an English saying Albrecht had heard of before, that in a wedding there should be something old, something blue, and something borrowed too. The room was exactly that, the old memories of Durmstrang shining a blue haze upon the borrowed room. As the new appointed headmaster in a time of great sorrow, his soul was irrevocably tied to the school, and his destiny marred with pain and purpose.

This trip was one that felt more than merely a trite or customary expression of gratitude or felicitation.
Although never having particularly talked with the professor one-on-one, Albrecht would hear knocking soon after he took on the position of headmaster. While having never conversed with their late headmistress either, the acknowledgement of her office still provided an unspoken comfort that left Hans with the instinct to knock on her door. Forcing his hand away after almost ratting down onto the wood, he reminded himself where the new headmaster had dedicated his workplace. After two years the corridors were no longer supposed to muddle his mind, but perhaps with the sudden deaths around him, that was not the only reason he had gotten lost the first time looking.
"Congratulations on becoming headmaster, Professor Albrecht." If allowed entry, the former Runes teacher would be greeted with Hans' straightforward good wishes. Mustering the bare minimum of a smile as eyes flickering across the newly-decorated room finally settled on Albrecht's, the lacklustre compliment was all he could offer when a veil of all-consuming darkness still rested over the entirety of the Institute.
All pleasantries aside though, he continued with a pained swallow, "And thank you for your support through everything. I know the last weeks have been hard for everyone but we wouldn't be here without you." It was uncharacteristic of him to be so sincere around an authority figure he must admit he barely knew and his words came out just as stilted as he had expected, though the strain in his tone did nothing against his genuineness. A masthead of leadership despite the whirl of grief consuming students and faculty alike, Hans owed him everything if only just for keeping their collapsing school community together. His appreciation was something Hans knew he never expressed enough, and during such dark times, he felt it could at least me some light, no matter how dim, illuminating into the murkiness. After all, with the incident at Hogsmeade having turned his world inside out, there would be no bitter aftertaste of vulnerability to accompany him anymore.

xxxxx It had been a few weeks from the events that had transpired and Emery had been unexpectedly and perhaps without wanting to be, placed in the role of headmaster. He had just announced his position and had set up his office a few hours ago, and now he found himself undertaking the important and heavy task of planning a memorial for the late headmistress whom Albrecht had worked with closely, as well as the students who died under his watch. He paused at that thought, being brought back to the moment of the explosions. He had felt deep in his bones, a clear utter suspicion and paranoia, that had come to be true. He should have been the protector of these children who were under his care as Durmstrang students. He was guilty of a lot of things in his years of life, and this would be a mistake that would haunt him forever. He should have known something would happen at such an international event, just as it had last year. It would be something he himself would think of if he was planning to make a grand hit to society. He had planned such violent insurrections before, though such things were now a thing of the past. It was during his time as an ambassador for non-beings and half-breeds.
xxxxx Unbeknownst to the German magical government, he had been a part of a local insurrection conducted by the goblins, having fed information to aid them in targeting specific areas that would cause the most damage. Albrecht had been young and reckless back then, being swept up into the idea of revolutions and a tangible change. Albrecht had been swept up into the thrill of danger and insurrection, unwilling to see perhaps the consequences of his actions. However, he had not been prosecuted or even been suspected to have been involved. Perhaps his strong magical ability had to do with that, in fact, an intelligent individual should consider that, though none had. He was now the headmaster of Durmstrang due to such a cause of violence, and now he felt more guilty than ever that this was a mistake he ever made in the past, though not guilty enough to confess. Emery Albrecht was sat in front of his desk, in the new office he had made for himself, unable to remove all traces from the late headmistress’ office and make it his own. He had papers on his desk, writing owls to the families of the lost students, and planning the ins and outs of a memorial that could never comfort fully grieving hearts and minds. He had left the door of his office open, hoping to show a face of warmth and comfort in a hard time as this for the students, a sense of an open door to the future, despite the cause of such a new future. No one had expected such a change of leadership, not even Albrecht, and he suspected the students would not be completely accepting of the fact that new authority had taken the place held by Shtriga. He knew how independent these students who almost taught themselves were.
xxxxx They did not know it yet, but Albrecht planned to allow the students to continue almost the same as they were before, perhaps even allow them to become more auto-didactic in their lessons, even more so now that the dangers of the world seemed ever more present to the students. As these thoughts trailed off, Emery looked up when he heard the sound of footsteps down the hallway of his office and when he did, he saw a familiar face of a student, Hans Jenssen. He gestured for Hans to enter and opened the door further to let the student in.
xxxxx He was inwardly surprised at the young boy’s easy congratulations, "Congratulations on becoming headmaster, Professor Albrecht.” Emery was a stern yet warm man and he answered truthfully, “I deserve no congratulations, Hans, but thank you for your warm welcome. It is at least hope for people who become stronger despite the pain we have experienced.” It was a pleasant surprise, indeed. Headmaster Albrecht had expected hostility from a student body who was as against authority as Durmstrang was. There were no words to express the relief that at least one student had perhaps accepted the new leadership, that perhaps students understood that Emery would never try to replace their late Headmistress, would never try to dominate over the students’ lives to proclaim his new ownership of the school, as some might suspect. The young boy continued with strained vulnerability, “And thank you for your support through everything. I know the last weeks have been hard for everyone but we wouldn't be here without you.”
xxxxx Albrecht smiled sadly as he also reciprocated the rare vulnerability a Durmstrang student offered, his face showing a clear pained look and a sense of grieving. He replied, with rare vulnerability also from his part, his voice unsteady, “Hans, I am glad that I have somehow been of help to you. If you know of anything you or the other students specifically need from me, you are always welcome to let me know. Even though I may be a figure of authority, I am human, and I am no more an expert in healing from grief and trauma than any other person out there. To confess, I never even expected to be given this position, so if you need something, please let me know.” Although, of course, Albrecht knew how to make logistic choices for an organisation, or for the government, being thrust into this specific position was incredibly new and difficult for him. Even more so, when it was a time of death that students were not used to. Albrecht was used to shutting his emotions down and carrying them deep inside of him, vowing to never let people make the same mistakes as him again, acting logically despite the dead feeling inside of him, but students did not deserve to feel that in such a way, to witness their classmates’ suffering face to face.

"It is at least hope for people who become stronger despite the pain we have experienced."
Inwardly he felt sour at his headmaster's words, as painfully delivered as it was; what doesn't kill him makes him stronger, right? Gathering himself, Hans said, "Also, I'm sure I speak for most when I say last night's mourning was very thoughtful. You organised it well." He smiled, then quickly allowed it to disappear when even he himself felt it was too shallow and forced. Drawing breath shaky as a leaf in the wind he continued, suppressing the unsteady tone in his voice, "They shall not be forgotten." He was unsure if that was more promise or curse; the younger Hans had been one to move on from shadows of the past as swiftly as one would a book series that no longer proved to be worth their attention. Qualmlessly he once could live with severing friendships as easily as the guillotine, but if he was still the boy he had been a year later a lot would have played out differently. At the tender age of twelve and a half he felt as if life had taught him a series of lessons all too bitter, and he knew the point of yesterday's event was remembrance, not the opposite. The memories would stay with him forever, and he recognised never forgetting as a rare blessing.
"Well, sir, I don't have anything I particularly need right now, though on the contrary, if there's anything I could help with I would be more than willing to." Hans did not merely offer his service purely out of the kindness of his own heart, but because keeping himself busy often proved to be efficient at taking his troubled mind off things. For better or worse distractions had always been how he dealt with something he wrongly found as wasteful as melancholy, and perhaps it was a habit he should shed in return for time to sit with his woes, which, frankly, sounded like an activity he would rather not engage in. At least this time his diversion was not of pointless entertainment - Hogwarts' ball, although not particularly entertaining, had only proven that - but now assistance, even if it was only to keep him on his feet. Perhaps the any mention of "help" would be a Herculean task for anyone, much less a child barely a teenager; after all aching hearts refused to be cured by something as trivial as cough-drops or reparifors. It would only be noble, however, to do the least of trying, even if it would be something as mundane as running a few errands. It would be the right thing to do, if only to set himself at an oxymoronically uneasy ease.
