Backstory

Joseph grew up in a pure-blood family of five, consisting of his father, Cameron Sims, his mother, Quinn Brown, his older brother Nikolas, Joseph, and his younger sister, Adair. Having parents that had both been sorted into Slytherin during their time at Hogwarts, the family boasted their long wizardry ancestry, often looking down on muggles and muggle-born wizards or witches.

Though Joseph seemed to fit into the family perfectly initially, his reputation in the family went downhill in no time. His first act of defiance was refusing to eat any of the meat his mother had prepared for him on his fourth birthday, after realising it had once been a living creature like him. 3 years later, Joseph, being rebellious as always, sneaked out of the house due to boredom while his parents were at work and Nikolas who supposed to look after him, was taking a nap. During this time, Joseph stumbled upon a couple of muggles at a park and made friends with two of them, namely Jacob and Astrid. However, after just an hour, a fuming, disgusted Nikolas found Joseph and dragged him home, reporting to their parents that Joseph had made friends with muggles when they returned from work.

Although Joseph's raging parents grounded him after hearing of the incident, Joseph refused to obey his parent's will for him, breaking out of the house that night and fleeing to his grandmother, Skye Sims's house. For the next two years, Skye, who never fully understood the family's prejudice against muggles, permitted him to spend his time outside with his new muggle friends almost everyday, only returning to her house at night to rest. Unfortunately, Skye succumbed to Dragon Pox after visiting her nephew who worked in the Romanian Dragon Sanctuary when Joseph became nine and Joseph was forced to return to his old home.

Determined not to be associated with the Sims family, who have long given up on forcing the stubborn boy to align to the family's beliefs, Joseph spent most of his outside with his two muggle best friends, Jacob and Astrid, while his competitive nature led him to seek fights and quarrels with his siblings when he was at home. Joseph often pretended that magic simply did not exist, despite knowing fully well it did. The pretence could go on no longer as Joseph finally received his letter of invitation to Hogwarts at the age of eleven.

Joseph is a shy, socially awkward boy. He tends to be rather self-conscious, fidgety and clumsy especially around strangers, causing him to feel humiliated often. He has a nervous habit of running his hand through his hair. With friends or people he is more comfortable with, his humour starts to shine through and he tends to be more open to sharing his thoughts.

The Hufflepuff boy is also impulsive, acting on his emotions and often prioritising self-expression over careful reasoning. As an introvert, Joseph values his moments of peace and solitude, treating them as necessary for recharging his social battery. However, he finds a life without a little drama boring, and hence finds himself drawn to chaos, making him a thrill-seeking rulebreaker.

Joseph has low self-worth and constantly engages in self-deprecating humour. 

Joseph is deeply devoted to his pet rock, Astra, who serves an emotional anchor for him. Deep down he is aware of his madness for loving a rock so deeply but his sense of loneliness and need for a stable figure in his life drive him to continue to depend on the pet rock for comfort and support. As the core of his emotions, Astra’s wellbeing is his utmost priority and he may become overprotective if he feels like her safety is threatened. It is not uncommon for him to have extreme mood swings depending on Astra’s current state.

As for his assets, he is an imaginative person, his thoughts often quickly jumping to weird, whimsical ideas that could make people find him either absurd or interesting. He is also observant and likes guessing how others think and feel, making an effort to empathise with them. He is working on becoming a kinder and more confident person. He is deeply loyal to his few friends who see any value in his company. 

Some other quirks of Joseph are his terribly untidy handwriting, his vegetarian diet and his inability to properly remember names. His favourite non-Astra related hobby is reading, making the library one of his favourite places in Hogwarts.
