Being a Second Year student already made an impression on Casey when he came back after the holidays. Stepping into the doors of the campus felt like he was a First Year all over again, but not for the nostalgia that everybody else probably had. His entire time at Ilvermorny last year was spent being pent up in a corner of the school, if not outside, sulking and sinking in his own feelings after Nick mysteriously vanished. Now coming back one year older, he felt he barely recognised the place after not really paying much attention to it last year. All the times he came and went between classes and homework felt like a blur, almost as if it never happened. His mind was too consumed with Nick's incident and the anger he felt for those around him for not realising the impact it had on him.

This time would be different, he decided. Compared to his pre-summer camp ideology, he wanted to get invested in being an open-minded individual. He wanted to get to know his school. He wanted to get to know his classmates and have friends to keep. Gone were the days of pushing people away. Incidentally, opening up was still going to be a challenge. But if Casey could lay bare every detail of his life to a girl from Hogwarts then the hurdles ought to be much easier to jump over to gel with his own classmates better. Assuming he hasn't pushed them far away enough so he could reel them back in on better terms.

As he sat outside after class he took in the scenery around him. Though often grey and cloudy, the sky was bright and the air felt rather warm. Not at all what he would expect out of September weather. If Emily were here she would undoubtedly make an observation of how symbolic it was for the weather to reflect on Casey's improving attitude... Or anything else karmic related. He chuckled at the thought of Emily's spiritual insight.

He leaned against the wall with his feet sprawled along the stone steps leading outside. His finger tapped wistfully at the surface underneath him.

He'd get to know this place better. It was Nick's home for a while, and if he owed anything, he owed it to him and his folks that Ilvermorny could be his home too.

Kaya, returning to Ilvermorny again, didn't feel anything especially nostalgic. She was looking forward to their visit at Hogwarts simply because she could meet Yasha again.

So far it was a nice friendship that already was starting to feel like something more special. Thinking about it, Kaya smiled. She wondered shortly where Amber went already, but knew they would meet soon enough. After all they were besties since before Ilvermorny and still continued their friendship.

As she was walking, she noticed someone, maybe a year younger, sitting on the stone steps. It was rather catching her attention, especially that it was beginning of new studying year. Most of the students would be catching up with their friends.

Hi. Do you mind if I sit with you? I'm Kaya Rose Bennett, third year. What's your name? She asked calmly with kind eyes. Could it be something nice to sit here and look around at the view? She spent here three years studying and still didn't find out everything and didn't discover all the places in this school. That would be fun to actually do it with Amber or maybe this guy could tell her about something she never tried before. Catching herself been curious, she took a breath and calmed her mind. This wouldn't be good to just ask a lot of questions from the beginning. Everything should take its own place and time.

It took Casey a few seconds before he registered the fact someone was talking to him. Him? Hardly anyone had done that last year. It became apparent to a lot of people that Casey wasn't a social butterfly... Less so a friendly one... Which led to them all keeping a clear distance away from him. He had to blink before he finally managed to say something, and not out of sass either, which was quite a feat for him.

"Sure. Knock yourself out."

Casey didn't recognise her. He had to guess she was at least a year older than him. Of course, lo and behold, she was older than him now that she went and introduced herself like a private investigator. Then again, was he supposed to recognise anyone at Ilvermorny after being such an ass to the school to the point no one hung out with him? He wasn't going to stop this girl though. It was high time he tried to make an effort to like other people. At the end of the day, that had to stem from interacting with them at even a minimal level.

Even if it meant sitting with them on the grass like something out of a springtime romance commercial.

"Casey," he introduced quietly. He realised from summer camp that speaking a few pitches lower made him appear more... Open? Kinder? He wasn't being his sarcastic self which was an improvement to the vast other introductions he made in the past, that's for sure. Better than nothing in this case.

Now for step two.

"Nice weather, isn't it?"

It gets as conventional as it gets, doesn't it? Casey immediately cringed as soon as he said it.

C'mon Casey. You could've done better than that.

Kaya sat down after hearing the boy's voice. She'd do it anyway, but asking wasn't a bad start. After all she never intended to seem like a rude person.

She smiled in acknowledgement when he said his name. It was simple and short introduction. If Kaya had to guess, he could be either not sociable or not wishing to talk now or maybe he tried to change something in him. Whatever it was, Kaya didn't care much. However, when he asked her about the weather, she found herself surprised. She didn't think about it today, so Kaya took some seconds before answering. It seems to be nice today. Do you come here often?

She asked in an attempt of knowing a bit more about the guy. Would they be friends after this meeting? Not necessarily, although possible. Would they even meet again? Most probably since they are in the same school after all. But she was determined to have a small talk with him using this opportunity that they had now.

What do you think about Ilvermorny? Kaya asked curiously. The answer could give her a hint on what he liked, what he probably hated. It wasn't a bad question and probably Kaya would walk away later knowing something more than his name.
She glanced at the sky, once again thinking about the weather. It was indeed good today. Perhaps it could be good for some more days.

Casey could no longer count on his fingers the number of times he had sat in silence when he tried to make conversations with someone. A lot of the time it was just karma for being a twit since a lot of people will have seen the sarcastic, passive aggressive side of him. Other times people just didn't know how to approach him, let alone talk to him, with those tendencies in mind.

However the silence didn't feel too harsh while Casey sat with Kaya. She didn't look like she was too bothered by his company... Well, it would be oxymoronic to ask to sit with him and then immediately take it back. Maybe later down the line Kaya will see how awkward Casey is and eventually get sick of him.

But no. She just had a look of contentment in her eyes as she basked in the glow the weather had brought them as they sat in the grass.

"A lot of the time, yeah," Casey said in response to Kaya's question. "Helps me to think, to vent, to get homework done if the weather's nice enough... All kinds of things." He had to admit, this was a sweet place to come to whenever he felt he needed it. He continued as he answered her other question.

"As for Ilvermorny... It ain't a bad place. Maybe a little too much fog every now and then, but the teachers are tolerable and the classes aren't bad. Some of them are actually kind of fun..."

He felt brave when he quirked a smile. "Though I guess you've already sussed this place out, ingrained all its secrets and tricks into you... You probably know everything about it now like the back of your hand, huh..."

Kaya thought about what she heard for a while and glanced at Casey. Coming here is indeed great. I like spending some time here, especially when the weather is nice. She was coming mainly to draw and to take photographs. Although, sometimes, she was doing homework somewhere outside her room as well.

Kaya smiled excitedly when he spoke about fog. Fog? It gives the place a touch of a mystery and I still find it great. It wouldn't be enough to make me stay in the castle. She mused.

Something from his next words caught her completely off guard. I'm still unsure if I actually uncovered all the secrets, but I'd definitely love to do it. This place has nice history and unfortunately I've been rather busy with practicing for Quidditch and spending time with my bestie that I can hardly say I explored every single place that exists here. She replied thoughtfully, already planning to change it.

Kaya looked peaceful and rather relaxed, embracing fully in the moment. Later as usual she'll search for Amber and plan something for them to do. Perhaps she should've also find her another friend. She didn't spend as much time with him as she could.

With her thoughts wandering all over the place, Kaya found herself starting to think about Yasha. And that's where she stopped herself and looked back at Casey. What's your favorite hobby?

So it appeared Kaya and Casey liked the same spot when the weather was nice... Excellent. That's something they have in common. Now to try and add to that list, Casey thought to himself.

Though he had to laugh a little when they talked more about the fog, all in good jest. "Oh yeah, definitely mysterious... Such as the mystery of where my frickin' feet are because I can't see 'em in front of me when the fog rolls in...!"

Kaya didn't want to know how many times Casey tripped over a stone or a stump because of how heavy the fog could get, nor the number of muttered curses that accompanied them.

"Ah... A quidditch player," he repeated upon Kaya's mention of her involvement in the sport. "Well even with your practice time, I'm willing to bet you still know more than I do when it comes to the ins and outs of the school. It doesn't matter where I poke my head, I hardly find anything new."

He was also felt slightly envious that Kaya had a best friend. Well... He shouldn't really. He had all of last year to make friends and he didn't. That was his karma and he knew it. Still, he was slowly getting better at hanging on to new friends. For one, there was Emily. And two, he managed get beyond an introduction with Kaya, with the weather evolving into the talk of hobbies.

"Hobbies? Well, uh..." Casey looked away shyly with his voice dropping to a murmur, unsure of how Kaya would react once he'd tell her. "I can juggle so... I like doin' that..."

He never sought attention with it yet everyone acted like it was the greatest power to have. One neighbourhood kid some years ago even told him that it was better than being any Dark Lord. Casey still couldn't decide whether or not to take it as a compliment or not.

"I also like potions... And hiking," he added quickly, trying to close the gap of the opportunity for Kaya to make a big song and dance just because Casey can throw some things and catch them fancily. Most reactions ended up being melodramatic and quite frankly, it got just a bit tiring after all this time.

"What about you...? Any hobbies?"

Kaya laughed softly at the mentioning of how hard it could be to see even one's own feet.

Well, perhaps you are right. After all I still manage to explore the place sometimes. I'm sure you could find something interesting if you'd wish. She said thoughtfully. For her it was just a matter of how strong she was interested in finding something even in simple things. Kaya could create her own adventure with results been as simple as finding a great view.

It sounds unique and nice. At least it's kinda unique for magical world, I'm not sure about non-maj. She replied with a smile, seemingly not surprised by his hobby of juggling. However, she got more enthusiastic about him been interested in hiking. You like hiking too? It's one of my favorite hobbies! Pausing just for a second she continued. I like outdoor activities and photography. And I can say I love exploring places. She could spend days doing it and never get tired. But hiking... Hiking was the best with finding some spot to camp at night, looking at the stars, maybe having a friend or brother with her. It was one of the best things Kaya experienced in her life. Also drawing and playing guitar while looking at the stars. How many times did you go hiking? Did you go to different places?

If in the beginning of their talking Kaya could seem to be not so interested and more calm, now she was quite energetic with bright light in her eyes. Now it was obvious that she didn't have any plans to leave any time soon. This talking turned to be a great new discovery and she planned to know more about the boy sitting near her.

The breath of relief when Kaya didn't exaggerate his knack for juggling was heavy as Casey relaxed. Too long did it take to recount the life story and "greatness" of harnessing a gift like that. "Unique". That was a nice way of putting it.

"I know it probably doesn't compare much to magic an' all... My mom is a Muggle expert, so I kinda got into it through her. It's a pretty good time waster. Good for reflexes too."

Casey's eyes then visibly widened at Kaya's energetic exclamation over hiking. It was enough to carve Casey's shy smile into a bigger one. "Really...? Heh..."

Photography sounded like the perfect pairing too. Casey hardly ever took photos on his journeys; his excuse being that no amount of photos could ever stand in as a substitute for memories kept in one's heart.

"Sporty and artsy then," he said. "Got a nice mixture there for the outdoors. Sayin' that, I can't imagine you stayin' inside for too long." He let out a single amused laugh, the smile still on his face. "A bit like me... I'm always wantin' to get out and taste the air no matter what the weather is. Even on rainy days I'm trying to find something practical to do, even if it's somethin' as ridiculous as slidin' down a muddy hill on my front."

The thought of it had Casey laugh embarrassingly about it. He must've been six or seven the last time he actually did that. He came back into the house looking like a creature that had escaped from the hidden depths of the Everglades.

Nostalgic frivolity aside, he was becoming proud that he was bonding with Kaya on a level he was most familiar with. It could've been coincidence or maybe the universe was letting him off the hook because of how out of touch he had been socially for so long, but keeping the conversation going was slowly becoming less of a worry and more of a dedicated commitment now for him. And he was just fine with that.
