Potions Championship Information

Please note that this only uses the Errand system in an OOC capacity - IC this is a part of the Potions Championship, and has nothing to do with the usual errands.
For the first part of the Wizarding Schools Potions Championship, participants were required to demonstrate their brewing prowess, skill, and knowledge. In addition, there was a strategic significance to the potions they chose: They would be able to use them in the final task of the championship, which depended on the age of the participants.

For this purpose, the Great Hall had been transformed from its usual layout into a gigantic potions lab. Along the sides of the Great Hall, stands for the audience had been erected, open for those students that wanted to cheer on their peers. Every student who wanted to participate or spectate had been given the day off from class. The center was sectioned into four areas, one for each of the three age groups of the competition, as well as a practice area for those wanting to practice their brewing skills without the pressure of participating in the competition itself. Each area had well-equipped brewing stations, with fireplaces, scales, mortar and pestle, cutting boards and knives, spoons of various sizes and materials, earmuffs and dragonhide gloves, and whatever else could possibly be required.

The podium that usually held the table for the Hogwarts staff was now instead filled with shelves upon shelves of ingredients, carefully categorised and lined up for easy access. Next to the ingredients were stacks of cauldrons of all standard sizes and materials, some with lids, most without. In short - anything required to brew any potion the students could think of would be present and accessible, they would need to bring nothing but their knowledge and their wands. (Indeed, using your own materials or equipment would be considered cheating.)

@Melisande Lennox and Méabh Regan were waiting on the podium, watching the students stream in. As the brains behind the operation, they had organised and set everything up, and would serve as moderators during the event as well as keep their eyes open for any possible rulebreaks. Behind them was the panel of judges consisting of Hogwarts' @Hjørdis Jensen and @Dusana Sabo, both accomplished potioneers in their own right, as well as @Célestine de la Croix-Valmer of Beauxbatons with her expertise in magical creatures as well as potions knowledge, and @Évodie Ndoto Masudi of Uagadou. Rounding out the group was renowned potioneer and author Hugo da Silva [NPC], who had been convinced to join the judges' panel for this prestigious championship. All five of them were ready to observe the technique and skill of each participant.

Once each group had found a table, Professor Lennox stepped forward to greet them. "Hon’ble judges, respected competitors and dear audience. It is with great joy and immense pleasure that we welcome you to The Wizarding Schools Potions Championship. It is an honour to host this historic event, here at Hogwarts, with the participation of the international wizarding community.

The art of brewing potions is one of the most complex magical fields. Having the right ingredients and the right equipment is not enough, there’s a certain trait in one's personality, a required ability and technique in order to achieve perfection. My question is: are you up to the challenge? Do you think you have the ability to be called one of the greatest potion makers of your time?

If so, I am not the one who will delay your path to glory, all I can do is wish you all good luck!"

Professor Regan would follow up with more technical information - reminding them of the rules, pointing them to the equipment and where to find what they'd need to brew their respective potions - before finally presenting their final task: With a smile and a flourish, she turned around, and, with a flick of her wand, painted large, golden red letters into the air, detailing the task for each group. She could hear the murmur of many voices breaking out behind her as groups discussed which potions to choose, coming up with ideas and strategies to solve their challenge.
1ST AND 2ND YEAR
Retrieve a basket of apples from a dense patch of forest - it is guarded by Red Caps.

3RD AND 4TH YEAR
Retrieve Ashwinder eggs from a wooden cabin. Be careful - the parents are still around.

5TH TO 7TH YEAR
Retrieve a specific item hidden in a patch of Swooping Evil cocoons. Attention - there might be additional complications.
The words would keep hanging there, unfading, in case anyone needed a reminder of the task at hand.

Once done, Professor Regan turned back around, eyes trailing across the assembled students - she was truly curious what they would come up with. No use in delaying it. "Remember - be smart about which potions you choose to brew. They could mean your success or your failure. Begin!"
OOC Errand Information

Prerequisite: Must be indexed
Word Count Requirement: 400 words
Group type: Small group (up to 3 people) (You create your own group threads in the Great Hall.)
Reward: 20 Sickles
OOC Date: 24 November to 14 December
IC Date: School day in the week before the Fall Ball (19 Oct) - please keep the exact date vague.

Important Information
  • It is possible for iNPCs to participate, but please choose your iNPC or your PC to take part, not both. Indicate the participant in the sign-up form.
  • The potion you choose to brew must be in the (PC's) trunk of at least one member of your group.
  • Each step of the potion recipe must be assigned to one member of the team. Indicate this in the sign-up form - your RP should match this.
  • Once the errand is completed, we will perform one moderation for each group to determine the success and effectiveness of the brew, based on the potion you chose, your RP, and your stats. Higher year potions are more difficult to brew!
  • But be careful: You won't know the results until you try to use the potion in the final task.
  • Don't worry - the errand reward does not depend on how well your character can brew potions, as long as they sincerely tried. (The championship result, however, does.)
  • Please create your errand threads in the Great Hall.
  • You can participate in either of the errands without participating in the final task, there is a sort of "practice" section of the area.
  • If you want to participate in the final task, make sure that all your team members are in the same age group (1-2nd years, 3-4th years, 5-7th years). This group must be the same for each of the three parts of the Championship. If you do not want to participate in the final task, you can team up with anyone you want.

Dogbreath Potion

Ingredients: 3 Fluid Ounces of Fire Whiskey, 3 Bat Spleens, 1 Fire Seed, 1 Valerian Root
Accalia Nabi Eonaria
Additional note: This potion does not require a fire

Add 10 fluid ounces of water to the cold cauldron
Chop 3 Bat Spleens and add to the cauldron
Stir once, clockwise
While wearing protective gloves, add one Fire Seed to the cauldron
Wait for 5 minutes while the Fire Seed brings the cauldron to a boil
Stir once, clockwise
Pour 3 fluid ounces of Fire Whiskey into a ladle and slowly incorporate into the potion
(The use of a ladle serves to prevent the potion from accidentally burning the Brewer)
Stir slowly, clockwise, until the surface of the Potion begins to burn with a blue flame
Immediately remove the ladle
Wave your wand over the cauldron
Allow the potion to burn for 120 seconds
Meanwhile, chop 1 Valerian Root into fine cubes
Add the diced root to the cauldron
Stir 2 times, anti-clockwise (the potion should have stopped burning at this point)
Wave your wand over the cauldron to complete the potion

Ingredients: 3 Sprigs of Mint, 2 Bursting Mushrooms, 1 Fluid Ounce of Salamander Blood, 2 Dried Wartcaps

Add 3 sprigs of mint into mortar
Crush into paste
Add 1 teaspoon of the paste into cauldron
Slice 2 Bursting Mushrooms and add to cauldron
Stir 3 times, clockwise
Wave wand and leave to brew on high heat for 10 minutes
Lower heat to a slight simmer
Add 1 fluid ounce of Salamander Blood to cauldron
Stir 8 times, counter-clockwise
Add 2 dried Wartcaps into mortar and crush into a fine powder
Add all of the powder into cauldron
Without stirring, leave on low heat for 20 seconds
Immediately turn off heat
Stir 7 times, clockwise
Wave wand and (as a group) pour into vials while hot (wear protective gloves if needed)

Antidote to Common Poisons

Colour: Teal

Ingredients: 1 Bezoar, 2 Measures of Standard Ingredient, 1 piece of Unicorn Horn, 2 Mistletoe Berries

Steps:

Avis:
  • Add 1 Bezoar to mortar
  • Crush into a very fine powder
  • Add 4 measures of the crushed Bezoar to the cauldron
  • Add 2 measures of Standard Ingredient to the cauldron
  • Heat to a medium temperature for 5 seconds
  • Wave your wand and leave to brew for 30-40 minutes

    Maisie:
    • Add 1 pinch of unicorn horn to your cauldron
    • Stir 2 times, clockwise
    • Add 2 mistletoe berries to your cauldron
    • Stir 2 times, anti-clockwise
    • Wave your wand to complete the potion

Ingredients: Standard Size 4 Cauldron, 6 Cherries, 1 Chicken (whole), Spider Legs (as required for 2 measures of ground Spider Legs), 3 measures of Beetle’s Black Eyes, 1 drop of Essence of Demiguise, Sponge

Instructions:
Boil the chicken in the cauldron for 3 hours.
Use a sponge to remove the water.
Conserve the chicken water collected in the sponge, you may need several.
Remove the chicken remains from the cauldron.
With a clean knife chop 6 cherries into coarse pieces.
Slide chopped cherries into the cauldron.
Return the chicken water from the sponge to the cauldron by wringing the sponges dry.
Stir thrice clockwise
Allow to simmer on a low heat until the potion turns purple.
Using a mortar and pestle, grind spider legs into a fine powder.
Place 2 measures of ground spider legs into the cauldron.
Stir once clockwise.
Add in 3 measures of beetle eyes.
The mixture should become bubbly.
A drop of tincture of demiguise.
Allow to simmer for 12 minutes.
The potion should turn silver in color.
Wave wand over the mixture to finish the potion.

Colin chooses peppermint rather than spearmint.

AF -Add 3 sprigs of peppermint into mortar
AF -Crush into paste
AF -Add 1 teaspoon of the paste into cauldron
AF -Slice 2 Bursting Mushrooms and add to cauldron (approach cautiously)
AF -Stir 3 times, clockwise
Col -Wave wand and leave to brew on high heat for 10 minutes
AF -Lower heat to a slight simmer
AF -Add 1 fluid ounce of Salamander Blood to cauldron
AF -Stir 8 times, counter-clockwise
Col -Add 2 dried Wartcaps into mortar and crush into a fine powder (gloves)

Ingredients: Standard Size 4 Cauldron, 6 Cherries, 1 Chicken (whole), Spider Legs (as required for 2 measures of ground Spider Legs), 3 measures of Beetle’s Black Eyes, 1 drop of Essence of Demiguise, Sponge

DEE
Boil the chicken in the cauldron for 3 hours.
Use a sponge to remove the water.

ALY
With a clean knife chop 6 cherries into coarse pieces.
Slide chopped cherries into the cauldron.
Return the chicken water from the sponge to the cauldron by wringing the sponges dry.
Stir thrice clockwise
Allow to simmer on a low heat until the potion turns purple.

PERI
Using a mortar and pestle, grind spider legs into a fine powder.
Place 2 measures of ground spider legs into the cauldron.
Stir once clockwise.

DEE
Add in 3 measures of beetle eyes.
The mixture should become bubbly.

PEAR
A drop of tincture of demiguise.
Allow to simmer for 12 minutes.
The potion should turn silver in color.

ALY
Wave wand over the mixture to finish the potion.

DOGBREATH POTION

  • Add 10 fluid ounces of water to the cold cauldron
