XXXThe corridors seemed much brighter in the daytime, and for once, the flickering torches set in alcoves along the walls didn't seem to add much to the light level. However, they continued to reflect off of the polished suits of armor lining the walls. The arched doorways alternating the suits of armor were dark, blocked off by doors that led to classrooms slowly emptying and refilling with students. But Eonaria didn't pay much mind to the details around her. She was simply walking back to the common room from Potions class, her surroundings a bit of a haze. It would be a long trek upwards.

XXXEonaria slipped around groups of students walking every which way, criss-crossing over traffic heading in both directions. It was something she did automatically; Indeed, she couldn't remember the last time she walked into someone. Eonaria walked with a purpose, forging a steady, winding path down the corridor. She was about to turn the corner when she felt an sudden impact, pushing her back a couple of steps from the force.

XXXEonaria immediately snapped back to attention, looking up in shock. She had collided with another first year, a Slytherin with medium brown skin and dark, wavy hair. "Oh, I'm sorry." Eonaria straightened up, alarmed. "Are you alright?" The Slytherin was shorter than her, with grayish-green eyes similar to her own.

It was so, so noisy! All of the students spilled out of their classes, Amelia with them. The stream of students pushed her back and forth, and she tried to keep her balance, to reach her destination: the common room.

She had a free afternoon, and most of her friends were busy for the day. It would be cold outside, but she didn't fancy feeling like a teddy bear, wrapped in clothes and walking around like a penguin, so that's a no as well. Sure, she could do homework, but she wasn't sure she'd be able to focus. Homework could be really boring sometimes, so no, she'd better find a cozy spot and read. Yeah, homework can wait, she could do it with friends later; it would be way more fun and interesting.

So that's it, Amelia nodded to herself, settling on reading a book. Now, what book though? And should she have a snack to go with it? Oh, and she should definitely curl up in one of her warm blankets, the warmer the better. The thought of the cold creeping into the castle sent a shiver down her spine. The corridors would probably look so blue and icy in comparison to their current yellow-ish warm hue; the windows would probably be covered in frost by Christmas, and the castle would be frozen.

As Amelia considered the holiday looming ahead, she turned at a corner and came to a halt as someone knocked into her. She stumbled back a bit, almost losing her balance and dropping her bag. It was some Gryffindor - and a first year, too. She towered over Amelia, asking if she was okay. Well, obviously not! Amelia picked up the fallen bag, crossed her arms and stood upright, trying to appear taller. The girl had jet black hair and somewhat grey-green eyes, highlighted by her green streak of hair.

Amelia snapped. "Could you watch where you're going next time?!"

XXXThe students milling through the corridors continued walking, ignoring the incident as Eonaria collided with another Slytherin first year. She was taken aback when the other girl snapped rather viciously, "Could you watch where you're going next time?!" Eonaria blinked, confused. "Oh, uh- I'm s..." She furrowed her eyebrows slightly. Wait a minute. Hadn't she just apologized to her not ten seconds ago? And who was this girl to blame her for it, anyway?!

XXX"Well, maybe I was the teeniest bit distracted, but I'm not the one at fault here, alright? It was the corner: neither of us saw each other coming, so just relax, would you?" Eonaria narrowed her eyes at the Slytherin. What an unfriendly girl. Her eyes, which had appeared beautiful just a few moments ago, were narrowed in annoyance, her arms crossed over her chest.

XXX Is she trying to make herself look taller or something? There's no way she walks so upright and puffed out all the time. "Also, you're short." She bit out, seething slightly. Okay, maybe that wasn't the greatest idea, but the whole thing had annoyed her immensely and Eonaria really just wanted to get back at the Slytherin for her nasty dismissal of her after they walked into each other. "What's your problem? We just bumped into each other, it's not a big deal."

Pam was freezing. It wasn't really THAT cold honestly, but, for some reason her face was freezing and her nose felt like it was gonna fall off. Sure she loved winter, but sometimes it was just too much. Although in a way, she absolutely welcomed the cold. Given a choice she would definitely pick winter any day; sure, she suffered, but that had an easy solution. It looked like her bed, warm quilts and a mug of hot chocolate.

Now, she was hurrying over to the owlery to send a letter to her father. She missed him so bad it hurt; she couldn't wait to return home for Christmas. She had wrapped herself up in layers like she always did back at home too. She shivered as a cold wind blew, rustling her robes. She needed to return back to her dorm quickly and get back under the covers. Perhaps she could read a book.....or she could go bother her friends.

Pam wove through the crowds avoiding people left and right and doing a generally good job. Her dad would be proud. However, she was broken out of her thoughts as she turned around a corner and walked smack into someone's back. An involuntary grunt left her as she stumbled back, rubbing her forehead, You jinxed it she told herself mentally,Good job bumping into random people. She stepped back quickly, an apology on her mouth, "I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I wasn't watching where I was going!" She looked at the girl and realised with a start that it actually wasn't someone random, "Amelia!" Pam grinned, happy to see her friend, before her eyes fell on the other girl standing across her and the frustrated look on Amelia's face. Pam fidgeted, wondering if she walked in on something, but held out her hand to the other girl, "Er, hi! I'm Pam."

Uh oh. Amelia did not mean to snap like that! The other girl seemed annoyed now, though, putting the blame on the corner.

Amelia stared at her for a second, her brain trying to come up with a solution — what should she do now?? Should she run away? Should she say something? What should she say??

Just when the thought of apologizing occurred to her, the other girl called her short. Nah uh. That's beyond the limits!! That's a line that should not be crossed! Amelia wasn't really good when it came to insults, but she decided to try her best against this irritating, taller Gryffindor.

Amelia rolled her eyes. "Well, maybe you should start looking where you're going, then it won't be a problem!" She still had her arms crossed, and glared at the girl defiantly for a moment, to highlight her point.

Amelia was ready to storm off dramatically, but then someone knocked into her, again! The new girl began apologizing, and Amelia turned around, startled- she recognized that voice! It was her friend, Pamela. Oh, that was not good timing! She didn't want to appear mean in front of her friend.

Amelia took a deep breath, trying to decide what to do now. She couldn't really leave now, could she? Amelia sighed, resigning to whatever fate this was. Gosh, what a mess.

XXXThe Slytherin looked immensely offended and exclaimed that Eonaria should start looking where she was going. Eonaria huffed in return. "Well, I can't exactly do that because when there is a corner-" She gestured to the corner they were speaking of. "You are going one way and I am going the other. I cannot see in a 180 degree radius; I'm so sorry for not having supervision." Eonaria jibed flatly. The girl was still glaring at her, arms crossed.

XXXEonaria was sure that she was about to storm away when someone bumped into her from behind. Eonaria giggled slightly. "See, I'm not the only one getting tripped up by corners!" The new arrival began apologizing profusely before appearing to recognize the Slytherin. Eonaria sidestepped to see who it was: a cheery-looking Hufflepuff with thick, curly blonde hair. But the girl soon began to fidget, looking a bit concerned. Eonaria blinked puzzledly at her before she held out her hand for her to shake, introducing herself as 'Pam.'

XXX"Well, hello, Pam. You seem to be friendly with this girl in front of me. Tell me, is she always a bit of a jerk?" Eonaria knew she was probably making a bad impression, and it would be even worse if one of them was pure-blood. Who knew if word of this encounter would make its way to her brother, or worse, her parents? She cleared her throat, beginning to calm down. Chill out, stop overreacting. Eonaria glanced at the first girl, wondering if she would be angry at her comment.

Pam scanned Amelia quickly, realising with a start that she had actually not seen her for a decently long time. She was dressed scarcely, considering it was winter and Pam suddenly remembered her mentioning something about not liking to dress in layers. She vaguely wondered if she had done her hair, recently, because something about it looked different. Or maybe she was being delirious and had just missed her friend.

She turned her attention to the third, unknown girl as she offered her hand to her, but before she could look her over, the girl snapped up, asking her whether Amelia was always a jerk. Pam felt her eyebrows shoot up in surprise at the rather unfriendly tone on the girl's voice. She remembered how Amelia had looked annoyed when she had arrived, and she wondered if she'd had a falling out with this girl. She glanced at her friend, instantly catching the rather guilty look she banished from on her face, a spark of protectiveness flaring up in her chest at the sight. She knew Amelia could be a little short-tempered at times but, as far as she knew her, she would not loose her temper without being provoked.

"Actually, she's quite nice normally." Pam replied, crossing her arms as she threw the girl a glare, surprising herself as her voice came out harsher than she had expected. She decided to keep it up, pushing out the warmth which was generally in her eyes, "Are you sure you weren't a jerk to her first?"

A jerk?! This stuck-up, arrogant, self-possessed Gryffindor called her a jerk?! Amelia was aware of the fact that she wasn't really nice when they collided, but really, why go around calling names?! Wasn't "short" enough?!

Fuming, Amelia wanted to respond, but Pam replied instead, backing her up. Oh, thank god for Pam! How lucky, really. Amelia smiled at her friend, grateful- and saying she was usually nice was truly heartwarming, too. If the corridor wasn't so cold, she would've blushed from the compliment. She didn't really notice the other girl's glance, but she did spot the change in demeanor; the girl seemed rather resigned, and cleared her throat. Was she feeling insecure? Was she hurt?

But at the moment, Amelia couldn't care less, so she stood shoulder to shoulder with Pam, and whipped her hair back from her face in a strong gesture, exuding the confidence she felt. She looked the girl up and down, as if daring her to answer, squinting her eyes at that pompous girl. She knew she was a bit in the wrong here, yes, but still, she couldn't leave a fight like this.

As she stood there, side by side with her friend in front of the girl, the stream of students thinned, and the corridor got emptier, and a bit chillier. Amelia shivered slightly, but held herself in place, feeling safer with someone by her side.

XXXThe Hufflepuff looked startled at Eonaria's remark about the Slytherin, crossing her arms as well. Oh, goodie, two against one. What had she gotten herself into? "Actually, she's quite nice normally." The blonde girl replied coolly, adding that Eonaria was probably the one to incite the confrontation first. She scowled.

XXX"Certainly not. This friend of yours was the first to be rude to me for no reason. I would have been perfectly happy to brush it off and continue on, but no, she had to sneer at me. So here we are." The corridors were beginning to empty as students found their way to their destinations. Left standing there, facing off with two students glaring at her and a few stragglers leaving, Eonaria suddenly felt quite alone. But she couldn't back down now. If the Sorting Hat believed she belonged in Gryffindor, a sentiment she did not share at all, perhaps she could start living up to it.

XXXThe Hufflepuff's defense of the first girl seemed to embolden the Slytherin, causing her to stand up straighter. ...she's still short. But she seemed a little cold. That was odd. The stone did make the corridors a bit drafty, but the weather outside today was warmer than usual. Eonaria felt extremely room-temperature. But then the Slytherin flipped her hair dramatically, breaking Eonaria's composure and causing her to burst out laughing. She quickly quelled her laughter after a second, but that single motion in the tense environment had been hilarious at the moment.

Pam frowned at the girl in confusion as she told her that Amelia had started the argument. Amelia was a pretty headstrong girl but she hadn't struck her as someone who would start an argument for no reason. Her first thought was that the girl was probably lying, but Pam figured she should still ask Amelia about it. She trusted her friend enough to know that she wouldn't lie to her.

Amelia, on the other hand, seemed to have gained confidence out of Pam sticking up for her. Out of the corner of her eye, Pam watched as she stood straighter, shoulder to shoulder with her. Well that became a one against two, Pam thought. But she wasn't gonna just pick her side without knowing the whole story; that wasn't who she was.

As she turned towards Amelia to ask her about it, her friend flicked her hair back dramatically, clearly feeling more confident now, and a bubble of laughter rose in Pam's throat at the sight, catching her unaware. She bit down on her lip, hard, attempting to shove down the laugh and succeeding decently well, although she wasn't sure if her face managed to not show her thoughts. The third girl, however, had no such reservations, as she burst out laughing, her composure breaking.

Dark thoughts, dark thoughts, Pam thought desperately, pressing back on the second wave of laughter which rose up, think about how Amelia will kill you if you laugh right now. That seemed to do its job as the laughter in her quelled and she turned to Amelia asking, "Did something happen?"
