Classes had become a pain in Renzo’s backside. He always loved a good challenge. It kept his brain sharp and his temper on a constant rollercoaster. But when it came the a language barrier, he did struggle quite a lot with some of the teachers accents, or with the speed or learning styles they taught at. He was sure there were a simple solution to this, whether it was a potion he could take, or something as easy as just asking for extra help from the professor.. yet, he couldn’t seem to bring himself to it. He was independent and needed to learn at some point. The real world wasn’t as helpful, or as nice as those here at Hogwarts. That he knew, even at the age of eleven.
Sitting in centre of the library on the table of a long, wooden oak table that could hold a good hundred students sat a little Slytherin with his head buried in a book. His brown curls were swept back and surprisingly behaving themselves on this occasion by not drooping into his eyes and obscuring his vision.
He was trying to do some homework on Charms, and practicing his incantations were not going to plan.
“Wen.. Wengardum. Wengar-die-um.” His voice was low, yet there was a hint of tension in his voice that shown he likely had been at this for awhile, and the repetition of the spell, as well as the sound of his own voice— a failing one at that was becoming annoying. “Aye! Come on! Renzo sei uno idiota!” he empathised quite loudly on the ending before he placed down his quill and leant back in his chair.
His hand naturally brushed back into his hair as if he had been used to putting the stubborn curls back in place, despite them already behaving themselves.
He needed a breather, else he was going to erupt like a mini version of Mount Vesuvius. “Aye aye...” He exhaled and tutted between his teeth. His eyes at the time took a quick glance at his surroundings, and thankfully there weren’t as many students around as he thought. There was however a girl not too far down from where he sat.
He couldn’t make out who she was, and in all honesty, he likely didn’t know as he knew very few people here with being a fresh, new first year. From what he could make out of her, she seemed soft and calm and had gentle features.
For a minute, his eyes would linger on her blonde curls and his fingers would tap lightly against the oak wood. He was debating with himself as to whether to poke at her for some advice on his pronunciations. English may of not been her first language either, or maybe she wanted to be left alone to study. But she looked so.. kind. If there was a term for ‘oh balls to it’ in Italian, he certainly thought of it before he shuffled his way across to her.
“Excuse me.. hello?” He would call out in a lower tone, in hopes to get the blondes attention.

Note: Renzo’s observation of Alyss isn’t him god-modding her by any means. He’s just making his own mind up of her, going off her looks. Just in case it comes across that he is accusing her of being calm and the likes.

Alyss, contrary to the usual routine of not studying and cramming for any exams last minute, was actually being responsible, and went to the library, taking out her books. She had decided to sit at a rather large table, in an effort to prevent herself from goofing off, using her unreasonable fear of upperclassman seeing to her own advantage. Pushing her hair back behind her ear, Alyss narrowed her eyes at the text that sat before her. Why did history of magic have to be so boring?
It was not as if Alyss was necessarily bad at her classes, nor school in general. It was simply… different. The homeschooling and tutoring sessions, while having kept her up to speed, were much more lax and she was never too shy to ask questions or ask for her educator to clarify or explain again back home. The problem with Hogwarts was simply the fact that if Alyss asked her professor a genuine question, than she felt stupid, embarrassed, and like everyone in class was smarter than herself. However, should she not, then Alyss didn’t know the material and wouldn’t get the marks that she nor her parents desired.
So her solution was to actually study, oftentimes pouring over the textbook to find anything that she may have missed or forgotten to note down during class, and reading over the passages several times to be sure that she understood the material. This was her first time trying it in the library, as the other instances in which she studied were with friends in the common room or dorm, and the study room.
As she was about halfway through a particularly boring paragraph about trolls, Alyss jumped in her chair as a loud “Aye! Come on!” erupted from another boy sitting at the long wood table, followed by a string of words Alyss didn’t understand, though could infer the meaning of. The boy leaned back in his chair and placed his quill down, quite obviously frustrated, likely with his own blunder.
Alyss felt a momentary twinge of annoyance. She was minding her own business, actually being productive, only for another student to distract her. Why couldn’t he keep his frustration to himself? Her mind began to turn down the path of casting judgmental and angry gazes down the table at him, but she halted herself. For all she knew, she could be in that same position in just a few minutes. At least this way, should it happen again, Alyss could ask him to shut it based on the fact that it would be a pattern.
Content with this idea, she turned her eyes back to the paragraph, skimming until she found the sentence where she had been interrupted prior. Alyss allowed for her eyes to flow over the words, halting at the break between pages, having the realization that although she had technically read it, she had not truly absorbed the information. Heaving a frustrated sigh, she pressed her lips into a thin line before trailing back to the very same paragraph, before she was interrupted once again, by the very same boy.
“Excuse me.. hello?” He asked, seemingly wanting her attention, Alyss was a little shocked, bravado from the prior incident leaving her in an instant. “Are you talking to me…?” Alyss questioned for a moment, eyes shifting from side to side as she tried to locate another student he could be speaking to. “Uhm… what can I help you with?” She asked, nudging her book out from directly in front of her. Alyss had been taught to give someone her full attention should they have a conversation, and that was her every intention, prior interruption or not.
