2024/25, Stage 1 Ravenclaw vs Hufflepuff: Match 2

The duel began with an explosion. Upper year matches usually did. Cassius found the ones that did not start that way to be disappointing

"Oculitumescere!"

His casting was perfect. The Ravenclaw duelling captain knew it the moment he spoke the incantation. Though it did not hit all his intended targets, two out of three was not bad. Perhaps hoping all three would be hit was hubris in action. If it was, Cassius soon after paid the price as a similarly cast spell hit him -- his vision severely affected by it.

Spells were veering their ways on the stage in a split second. Lindsey was in time to cast a Blasting Curse, fiery balls of orange making its way to White and solidly landing. It wasn’t the time to celebrate, probably, as the next thing she knew was that her eyes were beginning to swell. Oh, and…were they actually bleeding? Lindsey winced under the pain, refraining herself from rubbing her eyes, which would possibly make it worse. She managed to peek through with difficulty, yet her vision was soon screened by heavy fog.

Loud explosions and blasts rang in her ears. Were her teammates doing alright? Lindsey pressed her eyelids together unavailingly for a short second hoping to ease the pain, then steadied herself and tried hard to squint through the blurred vision.

"Ouchie," Haven declared after she heard the pops from her cracker jinx go off. The ouchie was not directed to the subject to that cracker jinx, oh no, it was for herself, and her poor little eyes. She had wanted Marcus to come watch the duel, but maybe it was for the best if he didn't show up. And that he didn't get too close. She didn't want anything happening to him. And she didn't want him to see her doing anything stupid. But it was her first duel, so something was probably bound to happen, though she would very much like to win. Hopefully she could see well enough for her next spell, but did she even need to see? Maybe it was best if she couldn't, then she wouldn't have to see if anything terrible happened to her. Hopefully nothing would, but who knows what those sneaky eagles had in store. Haven would do her best to stop them. Imagine how embarrassing it would be to tell Marcus she lost her first duel!

Another round, and another set of peculiar similarities. These duelists would not be beating a legitimen accusation just yet.

A Badger and Raven would both throw up protective spells. Lindsey and Cassius must have been expecting the worst with their Protegos. Haven and Damion both wanted to aid their shielded partners, and would each move to shower them in a Reparifors. The leftover Badger and Raven would then be left to go on the offensive. Aida with a Cracker Jinx, perhaps looking to singe some fur like their feathers had been? And Lea would trace an ever familiar 'V' into the air as this moderator's favorite spell was incanted.

But the similarities would not stop with just the spells selected! Also the targets. Both of the duelists who'd made to heal their allies would find themselves in harm's way. Damion would be trapped in a vortex of wind as his healing soothed his teammate, and Haven would feel the painful pop from Aida's crackers as she finished un-swelling Lindsey's eyes. As the rest of the Badgers were caught in the cascade of explosions the audience would notice that both of the protegos had gone untouched. They had thought too much alike.

While this bout of spells had not had quite the same explosiveness as the first, it had still shaken things up quite a bit. The Raven's seemed to gain some ground in wear and tear, but it was much too early to really tell anything of the sort. Would they see another round of mind reading, or was this where their paths diverged?

With another successful spell Aida thought back on the old days when it was difficult to properly execute a spell. Now it was rare to fail one, and although the wix understood that it was because of years of devoted study that casting had become easy, those early years seemed like a life that belonged to someone else. Days of struggle though they were, they were also days where human friends played a significant role in their life. What was being lost along with such cloistered success? Would the human world ever appeal to Aida again enough to draw the white wix back into civilization?

One step forward came with two steps back. While Lea managed to keep an eye on one of the Ravenclaws through the fog, the other two she could only hope were not attacking. Only one of her wishes was granted. As the Hufflepuff formed a V in the air to blow the eagle back, she would release the spell just as the world sparkled before her, ears ringing from the sudden explosion nearby of the Cracker Jinx. Hopefully she had hit her mark, but she was more worried about keeping herself up and conscious- her teammates better be faring stronger.

“Protego!”

Prepared to absorb or deflect a salvo of incoming spells, Cassius hastily cast a shield charm. He did not often like to go on defense but sometimes it was necessary. Sometimes caution was the wisest course of action.

It did not seem to be the case this round. No spells came in his direction and all Cassius could do was shake his head feeling like he had wasted an opportunity. However, it was still early in the duel and there were many rounds to go.

As strategized.

Lindsey mumbled the incantation, drawing an invisible shield in front of her, cautiously hiding her body behind it. The smoke was still thick enough for her to see anything, but - the swell in her eyes had faded, and she felt much eased despite of the continuous bleeding. It was really good to have her trusted teammates with her. “Thanks so much.” She told Haven, managing to squeeze a smile out though she doubted if the other girl could see it clearly. Another series of explosions rang in her ears, and Lindsey steadied herself, regaining her stance.
