She was drowning. She was drowning in the water. She was drowning in the dark around her. Eugenia felt like she couldn’t breathe. The world felt dark around her. Confusing even. How had she gotten in the water? How would she get out? Who would find her?
Would she be alive by then?
Those were the questions filling Eugenia’s mind. The world felt distant, odd, very different than any previous experience. She kept her mouth closed. Will she drown? She felt two powers fighting over her. One trying to lift her up. To the face of the world. To life. The other trying to plunge her back to the dark waters. She let her body still. Let the powers fight. She tried to hold on to breath for real life. The girl felt her neck jerk upwards. In an instant, she was out of the water.
Someone was above her. A clearly very odd figure. Without a face. A recognisable persona. Eugenia looked. But, why was the person not responding? The other one moved. She looked around. He had turned, uh, their (?) back to her, looking as if they were fumbling with some strange strings. The girl felt part of her body twitch.
In reality, the girl hadn’t just thought that her body twitched. Because it had. Eugenia’s arm jerked upwards in a spasm-like movement and she began fumbling with her sheets. This wasn’t just a nightmare. It felt like it was something more… Sinister.
No one had woken up in the dead of night. Everyone walking in dreamland. Except for Eugenia, who was now fighting with her worst fears.
The figure eventually seemed to finish their work with the strings. By that time, the crooked sort of grin had become a terrible grimace, that only meant something sinister. Eugenia’s breathing accelerated. What in the world was this? Who, no, what, was trying to bind her? She felt some voice speak. Was it her conscience or some other voice? Regardless, she made no attempt to interrupt.
Either way, it wouldn’t have been very polite to do so. Keep your manners, girl.
When you drown, Eugenia, you make others drown with you. You pull them down with you. Whether it is your problems or stupid worries. You are so self-centered and an egoist, you haven’t realised you are in the first place. In what reality will you change?
The odd voice made her stomach twist. An egoist? She was a shy fellow, who in many cases, always put the needs of others beyond hers. She would talk to them, but try to stay fairly on the ground. She didn’t let her mind fill with too much air. And what did they mean by “drown”? She never tried to fill another person with despair. Or did they mean Ruby? A grandfather dead was the whole point of her breakdown. Grief is selfless, where you cry for another person. Why they died, which seems so unfair for their sake. Since when did he deserve to die from murder? Since when anyone should be murdered?
Thoughts of would’s and should’ve filled her head. She should have never sought help. She wasn’t enough. She wasn’t the one comforting, but the one seeking comfort. No, it should be the other way around. Always.
She was biting back tears when the figure spoke again. Your thoughts and actions come at a price. Today, you are drowning in your thoughts. Thoughts of you. How you may or may not harm others in your life. You’ll take someone down with you. You’ll both be stuck here. In these dark waters. Because that is what you two deserve. What you, Eugenia Malamo Karageorgiadi deserve. A twitch in her hand. Who would she drown with. Was their any way out off here?
The figure turned once more, its menacing words still hanging in the air. Eugenia tried to calm herself, to breath. A terrible feeling now rose in her stomach. Her thoughts were so egoistic. She thought about making herself sound like she was something valuable. Like she had some stupidly big worth. No, she was worthless. Because a good person doesn’t take others to drown with them. They pull them up from the waters, save them. Not plunge them back again.
Once they finished more stringwork, they turned again. They were holding some odd strings. A bundle. Was that?… A person? No, it couldn’t be. It shouldn’t be. What was this place? Her thoughts rang. She had to get out of here. Save herself, but mainly, save the innocent she dragged here. Suddenly, she felt a great pain in her back, as if her skin was slashed open. The pain escalated and she felt droplets of blood coming down her back. At once, she wished this could stop.
Please, give me some bandage. Make this bleeding stop. These were her thoughts. As if some godly being from above pitied her, she felt something hard against her stomach. A bandage had formed. As if that person had cast ferula, a spell she definitely didn’t know how to cast. It was an older year Charms spell. She felt the pain lessen. Had the figure noticed?
She’d never know. Instead, they let out a long, piercing maniacal laugh. It would shout. See how you are an anchor, not a safe ship bay. See how it is all a futile effort on your part. See how wrong you are and see me again. In the future. Just remember. You can’t undo your actions, they are irreplaceable. They lifted the bundle of strings and brought it back on Eugenia. She wanted to scream for help, but her throat was locked. Her jaw wouldn’t move.
The bundle of strings was set upon her. And then, the victim’s face was evident. It was her own, beloved, sister.
Ifigenia. Who would hurt Ifigenia?
Instinctively her hand went for Ifigenia’s wrist. Was she alive? Could she help her? It felt like her back moved. And her hand did indeed have a pulse. At least, that was something good. Her sister was safe. She had to get them out of here. And quick.
Eugenia tried to grab her sister. They had a better chance of living if they could stay together. The voice sounded again. It sounded, bitter, melodramatic even. What does one say introns off their own doom. And that of an innocent other? I don’t care girl. Good buy miss Eugenia Malamo Karageorgiadi. Feel free to take her down with you. You’re the anchor honey, not me. She felt a pressure in her chest. Her breathing accelerated to try and compensate for the air she lost trying to take these words in.
I love you. I will protect you. I’m not an anchor for you. Let me be your sweet bay. She whispered to her sister. They wouldn’t drown. She’d make sure they didn’t. An odd hand went for her head. In an instant, she was back under water.
It all rushed over her. Had her sister breathed on water? Was she alive? She checked for her pulse again, instinctively once more. She was afraid for her sister. She was the most valuable thing she had. Eugenia didn’t want to lose her sister. Not at all costs. And she was alive. As if someone had listened to her wish. Thankfully. She’d wish once more.
Please, get her up to the surface. Get her out of the water, in the place that devil of a person cannot reach. If she has sallowed water, make her cough it out. Please, whoever you are granting wishes, keep her alive. Please. Even if it means I never see daylight again. Please.
There was a strange movement. Her sister’s body felt light. That wish-giver listened to her again. God, finally, some good person in this world. With a final touch on her hand, Eugenia let her sister go. She rose up. Her body still, but her heart pounding, her diaphragm pausing for a bit, but expanding and contracting once she reached the surface long above. The figure saw her, but they didn’t reach her in time to fulfil their plan of the two sisters’ destruction. At least, not that off the youngest.
Eugenia remained down. Fighting with her waters. Her breathing lessened as fewer oxygen ran through her blood. She felt drowsy and tired once more. Her feet and arms moved with difficulty. But she had to get out. Or not? At least her sister was safe.
She felt a state of calm she knew was artificial. She was drowning. And then, came one, last, wish.
Please. This is the last thing I’ll ask from you. Make me follow my sister. Get out of these dark waters. I’ll rise not to save myself, but to help her. I don’t want to live her alone in this world. This is for her sake, please. She’s 8 years old. Please, let me do it for her. I’ll thank you, whoever you are, if you do this. Please.
She thought of the wish. Or tried to say it. Or neither. But it was her heart, her logic and feeling together that spoke. But it was a selfless wish. Was the prophecy of her future fulfilled?
She felt being dragged out of the waters. From above. As if it was some deity. While she was pulled upwards, she tried to remain calm. Just a little longer, and she’d be safe. And help guide her sister through her dark waters. This was for her. And all the people she met on the way there. They deserved this life more than she did. And she’d protect them at all costs.
Her body got dragged out. And she suddenly felt very tired. Very, very tired. For an instant, she couldn’t breathe, or ask for help, or move. And then, she could.
Eugenia’s eyes opened the next moment. She was awake, and she was alive. Wait, was this real? She put on her glasses tiredly. Well, there was one way to truly find out, once and for all.
The young Greek girl rushed to the bathroom. Checking around her waist was no bandage and no wound. Had this been such a terrible dream? Nightmare. The bad dreams you see at night, but also the man who betrayed the Greeks at the battle of Thermopylae. Someone had betrayed her. Her own feelings, her conscience. She felt tired, wronged. What had she dreamed of? Was this reality what she wanted? One of constant worry?
At the word “worry”, there was a sudden void in her chest. Ifigenia. Her sister. Was she alright? The Hufflepuff sped from the bathroom back to their room, but at the other bed. Her sister’s. Her diaphragm was moving. The sound of her breathing was sweet comfort. She was alive.
She was alive.
She thought they had both drowned in these dark waters. It was such a scary dream. A true nightmare. That infant, the girl wanted to talk with her sister. It was some more much-needed comfort after her nightmare.
Eugenia sat on her sister’s bed. With her index finger, she poked her sister’s back twice. No, this wasn’t the right way. Eugenia bent over and kissed her little sister on her head. She, in turn, made some odd motion and she immediately jolted awake. The two girl looked at each other silently. And they both smiled softly.
Ifigenia. Are you ok? What time is it? Why did you wake be up? Eugenia took a deep breath. Μπορούμε να μιλήσουμε; I had a nightmare Ifigenia. The time is three to four in the morning. Can we talk?
The sisters hugged tightly once. They totally understood each other. Ifigenia chose to reply with a smile. She liked this offer. Of course.xxx

The twelve year old Hufflepuff let out a deep breath as she climbed on her sister’s bed and positioned herself next to her. She shot a stern gaze her way as she thought of the things the figure said. Was it then the correct time to speak to her sister about this? The girl looked up. She was just 8. 8. She didn’t have to know everything. It could traumatize her. Or make her think bad of her sister. Either way, it wouldn’t be a good thing. They needed to stay together.
Ifigenia lifted her blankets to let her sister beneath. Who knew if she was cold? Leave it, Ifigenia. I’m not really cold. If you want, stay under the blanket, though I don’t need it for now. Her sister then smiled as Ifigenia threw the blankets off the side of the bed. Well, they’d make the beds together later. Who cared now.
The little girl. After staring at her sister’s expression intently, she got tired of seeing her sad face. So she asked. Με τα όλα που συνε— εμ, συνεπάγονται; Έτσι δε λεγεται η λέξη; So, what happened? What did you see? Was someone chasing you? Odd and crazy things. Or did you see grandpa? You’ve seen him before in nightmares. Sometimes, you said, it seemed to be like they killed him in front of you. With all the things accom— accompanying it. Did I say the word right?
Eugenia turned to face her little sister. Of course she’d ask whether she was fine; what she saw in her nightmare. She did look like wreck, didn’t she? Well, she would tell her sister what was wrong either way. She would. Hadn’t they promised to be honest with each other? They had. Sisters keep their promises however difficult it felt doing it. But the question was, did little Ifigenia want to hear her? Well, are you sure you want to know, hm? Because both of us have great memory. That’s the only thing I’m telling you my sweetheart. The smile that came from her lips was her best attempt at a sort of sugared tone. But talking sweetly was difficult after horrors. And these were horrors.
Yeah? They- they were.
The Hufflepuff looked at her sister as the younger girl's brows furrowed for a moment before she turned to speak. Yea, tell me. If I’m not ready, I’ll tell you to stop. So you’ll still know my reaction. The two Greek girls faced each other as Eugenia launched into a monologue that felt like it was tugging at her sleeves.
Οκ. Okay, since you promise you’ll tell me.. Listen, it was like I was in a black lake, like at Hogwarts. And someone just grabbed me and pulled me out. I didn’t see their face at all, though it was weird. And they were doing stuff with some strings. And then I saw they didn’t have a face. After that, they began firing insults at me, a little more and begin crying in my sleep. Or awake, I don’t know anymore. They accused me of being bad and an egoist, making me feel really bad. You know what, it’s probably saying the truth. Like, why did I even wake you up in the middle of the night. You don’t have to be burdened with my personal stuff. Just leave it, it’s okay.
Eugenia looked down. Once again, she was on the literal verge of tears. What had she even done again? Why was she goddamn crying again? It was all so super stupid. She had no reason to be like this and yet, she was breaking down in front of someone again. And as if it couldn’t be any worse, she was breaking down in front of her sister. Her sister was 8. 8 years old. And she could control her feelings better. Eugenia looked outside her window. The view was nice. Comforting, but also like, confusing. It was so different from the British view. At Hogwarts, the stars emitted a light, soft glow, without feeling. Yet here, it was all alive, vivacious, beautiful and breathtaking, but also nostalgic and pained at the same time. The stars looked better from above. And from above they’d see the entire city.
Αγκαλίτσα;;; It’s okay. Take your time. Huggy? Eugenia looked at her little sister. How much she’d love a hug right now. So she accepted it. And then she turned. Follow me. Put on your robe and we’re going to the attic. We’ll see the stars. They did exactly that and began walking up the stairs. After a few minutes, they opened the door to the attic and slipped through.
Now wasn’t the time to talk about family secrets or their legacy. It was time to let their fears go. It was high time they did it together, and solidify their sisterly love.
Once and for all.xxx

Eugenia looked back at her little sister. Ifigenia was there. She gave her a small wink and looked around the attic. There were some old stools near them, so the two sisters quietly picked up one for each girl and brought them towards the large circular window. Near it, was a twink of gold. The box. With the letters. Could it be that? Momentarily, Eugenia was in that intrigue. But the cry of an owl made her snap her head away from the box and towards the window.
She remembered all the times they had sat here together. whether it had been just to escape from the adults and reality, or to just play another game of hide and seek. They were all precious. But deep inside her heart she knew that none would compare to their relationship as sisters as this meeting did. As the younger one sat down, Eugenia turned to look at her, her eyes piercing the other’s thoughts. Ifigenia, I want you to listen to me carefully. And then talk to me in complete honesty. The other just nodded. Her sister’s words cut deep.
She wasn’t used to being faced with such seriousness. In a second, the gleam from her eyes faded, before being re established. Eugenia saw that. Her gaze fixed firmly on her sister. It put you on me. And said that I don’t help people, but drag them down. Like an anchor. And that it was about time I pulled you down too towards the bottom of the sea. And then, I fell I the water again. But you then went up alone, at some point. I did too, but it was much more difficult. And I was crying inside. Because the one thing I should do is one of the few I just can’t. Protect you.
Ifigenia gazed at her sister, the pain in her eyes radiating to her. Eugenia’s expression turned cold. And then, the younger sister saw it was a façade. To hide her bitter tears. She wanted to approach again. But it felt difficult. As if they were separated. She thought about those words, echoing in the air. Were they true? Were those words true about her sister? How could they be? But why were they so out of touch now? The pain was stronger. The demons inside Eugenia were consuming her whole. The large weight on her shoulders threatening to knock her down. Make her hurt even more. She had a status, a face to uphold.
But could she do it in the end?
The eyes were burning hot, mint and chocolate melting into quiet tears. Ifigenia couldn’t watch. But she couldn’t approach either. The two of them felt fundamentally alone. Like they were separated from each other by force. She had always seen her older sister as this ray of sunshine. It wouldn’t go dark at all costs. Soon enough, she turned into a little sunny ray too. But the oldest had many burdens on her shoulders. Her conscience was heavy with the weigh off tear, deaths of loved ones and all the things she heard. The perfect façade she was trying to uphold was threatening to crash down.
And take her with it.
But then, what did the figure mean? Perhaps it was that the person she felt like she was forced into becoming was too much. It was an ideal she couldn’t reach. She always put it off during the year. Trying to show that she was happy, that she just loved the place. But doing so just hurt. The ideal was crushing her. And her sister saw it. Eugenia was living a confusing life, that hurt her inner self. And it was the thing dragging her down. And nobody had seen it. Not until now.
Ifigenia had though. And she wasn’t going to let the sister she looked up to so much cry in pain alone. The pair would cry together. Because that it what sisters do.
Im sorry Eugenia, I’m sorry! I didn’t know how difficult it is for you. I’m sorry if I was additional weight. Eugenia looked at her sister. She was crying. The salty tears running down her cheeks were illuminated in the moonlight. It only made her hurt more. She had made her sister cry. She had hurt an eight-year-old. She was a monster.
The Hufflepuff bent down and scooped up her sister, trying to console her. Yes, she was a monster. A terrible one, in fact. Ifigenia was so goddamn small. Why had she made her cry? The apologies were genuine. But she was right. She shouldn’t have told this to her. She was plaguing her with her pains, just as she plagued Ruby. She had shed tears too. She had made Ruby feel pain and pity for her. She was utterly wrong.
……………
It took Ifigenia a while to calm down. The tears stained Eugenia’s night dress, but they were ones she deserved to feel. The younger girl looked up at the oldest and saw the pain in her eyes. It was still there. You’re not a weight. Eugenia mused that thought after some time, the whisper lingering in the air between them. Ifigenia’s eyes were still locked into Eugenia’s form, the pain was there. While she felt some reassurance, she wasn’t prepared for what she heard next.
Εγώ είμαι βάρος για εσένα; Am I a weight for you?
It hurt. It hurt for Ifigenia to see her sister, stronger than any one she knew, breaking down like that. The badger had always insisted that she was okay, and that things were always great. But how great were they really, when this was one of her painful thoughts? The kisses she received did nothing to truly calm her, for her sister felt awful. I’m a monster. It was barely a mutter. But Ifigenia heard. Was that how much her sister hurt?
She was no monster. She was just in pain. Όχι. No. Such a simple word brought tears of joy to Eugenia’s eyes. She was no weight to her sister. But then, a pant of doubt came. Her mint and chocolate eyes pierced through the younger girl again. She had asked for one thing: honesty. But was her sister truly honest? Or was she just saying this to calm her down? Because she might as well have done that. The pain in her eyes was visible. And the Hufflepuff knew that very well. It was just… it hurt to hide her tears anymore. Like her tears weren't worth it. But they were worth it. Because they showed Ifigenia the truth. How plagued by pain her sister was. How nothing was ever sunshine and roses. There were beds of thorns too. And she had to acknowledge that. It was the raw, paint truth.
Eugenia looked intently. But the only response was a repeat of what her sister had said. With even more determination. And then one of the strongest bear-hugs she had ever felt. Her sister’s arms wrapped around her tightly, refusing to let go. She had been alone for too long. Her younger sister had realised she was ignorant of her role model’s pain. But now, she was staring at it straight in the face. And suddenly, the Greek badger felt like a great weight was lifted from her shoulders.
She wasn’t fundamentally alone in this world. She could trust her sister. And her parents.
Beyond just a confession and a few tears. But with everything. They weren’t trying to hurt her. But to help her. The secret revealed to her ultimately didn’t matter at all. Whether she was wizard born or a pure blood, she was still Eugenia Malamo Karageorgiadi. The great person she had vowed to be, the person her sister looked up to, the perfect student. Because this was no façade anymore. Perfection came naturally. She didn’t have to worry about it. And either way, people wouldn’t notice. She’d cover up. And she was great at lies. And secrets.
She’d keep her grandmother’s secret to the grave, that is for sure. She was still a kind person. Her sister, with all her innocence, truthfully reminded her of that. She loved her sister dearly. And now everything was clear. She knew exactly what the dream had meant.
People love you as you are. You don’t have to shape yourself into what they want you to be.
That will drag you down. Not you. But the façade you try to keep.
……………
The hug lasted for a long, long time. The two sisters remained in complete silence, hands hugging each other, for around 10 minutes. Then, they broke off simultaneously, and Eugenia gave her sister a soft kiss on the forehead. Then, both pure of heart, turned to look at the stars. They were beautiful. A constellation. It is Lyra. And then, Hercules. A bit further down, Cygnus. Eugenia explained all that she saw to her sister.
Then, in the distance, the pair saw a very bright star. It was shining, but they didn’t recognise it as some constellation. Or a planet, for that matter. It was Ifigenia who spoke of it first. Eugenia, that is grandpa. The badger looked at her sister, at the star, and then back at her sister. An old wizard camera stood close to them. And there was enough film inside. So Eugenia snapped a picture of the night sky. And then, she moved closer to the spot where they saw the star. And snapped another picture. She’d treasure those two images. Then, she snapped them again, trying to make the two pair as similar as possible.
One for each sister. One for each granddaughter of this branch. She gave one of the pairs to her sister. Ifigenia smiled and grabbed Eugenia’s right hand. The two girls stood there. Eugenia looked at her, and smiled. Why not? Let it be him. She clutched her pair of images in her hands. A pair of crystalline tears fell from her eyes. She let them fall. The two sisters hugged each other. After some kisses, they walked out of the attic and down the stairs quietly.
Without making any noise, they sat in each of their beds. Eugenia went over to her sister and gave her a little object. The younger girl opened her hand and saw a little pearl. It was a pin. She remembered Eugenia had one too. Now the sisters could have matching pins.
Eugenia laid down on her bed two. The two sisters spoke together. I love you. They smiled at each other quietly and closed their eyes. Sleep came easily for Ifigenia. But it didn’t for Eugenia. She kept looking at her little sister, thankful that she had been born all those years back. She might not have made it out alive through all the circumstances she had experienced without her. They were each other’s sweet bay.
She watched the young girl’s brown hair cascading down her face. Her serene expression as she was asleep. Her small chest moving up and down quietly. She was alive. And she was there. For her. Eugenia sighed. She loved her sister more fully than she could ever imagine. She was Bert best friend and closest companion. She was the best thing that had ever happened to her.
And just like that, Eugenia fell asleep too. Happy.xxx
