Avis plopped down onto an armchair in the library. She had an hour and a half until dinner, and she planned to make full use. There was some pesky History of Magic homework she could have been doing, but reading was much more important. She curled sideways, laying back against one of the armrests and draping her legs around the other. Her friction-filled hair spread along the armrest, hiding her streaks. She lay her book against her legs, and a small pile of books sat on the ground after the first one had finished, along with a steaming mug of hot chocolate that was meant to be drunk, but would soon be forgotten about. It was-thankfully-not raining, a seeming rarity for Avis, and yet she was curled up in the library as if it were.Past-dated to September 7, 2024. In Avis' opinion, she seemed to be behind in knowledge of the wizarding world, and she planned to remedy that by reading as many wizarding world books as she could. She pulled open the old green book and skimmed the first page. Wands, spells, purebloods, muggle-borns. "Muggle-borns?" Avis muttered the word to herself, trying it. She had heard other students use it, some as simply words, others it seemed as a form of insult, but had yet to learn the meaning. She flipped through the book, scanning for the word, hoping for some context. "What in holden's name is a muggleborn?"

Eonaria was thoroughly bored. There was still a bit of time to go to dinner, and she was not feeling the hunger yet. She was pretty sure she had finished nearly all of her homework, and she didn't feel like learning more DADA today. Her brain was probably fried for the week. Wandering through the corridors, she suddenly thought of the library. Perfect! Hundreds of books to browse. Surely she would find something interesting to occupy her time there.
Looking forward to getting a good book and curling up in a random corner, Eonaria picked up her pace. When she entered the library, her gaze landed on a Ravenclaw girl sitting sideways on an armchair. It honestly looked comfy, but Eonaria knew if she tried that, her neck would begin hurting soon. The Ravenclaw had a pile of books and a cup of steaming hot chocolate, and she wondered where she had gotten that from. Eonaria was about to head off to the shelves when she heard the girl mutter, "Muggleborns? What in holden's name is a muggleborn?" She began flipping through the pages.
Struck by curiosity, Eonaria approached the girl. "Hi. I couldn't help but overhear, but... a Muggleborn is someone who has magic but was born from two Muggle parents. It's a little odd, but..." She shrugged. "There are lots and lots of Muggleborns at Hogwarts. Not many Purebloods like them." Eonaria wondered if she should mention that her own family didn't think much of those born from Muggle blood, but decided against it for now.

Avis lay her head upside down over the armrest of the chair to look at the girl standing behind her. She was upside down, which was not the most convenient in terms of observation, but she smiled a little at the sight of a green streak in the girl's black hair, similar to Avis', and she wondered if the girl had a reason for it, like Avis. Not that Eonaria would be able to see her streaks in the splayed-out upside-down current layout of her hair. There were definitely going to be some serious knots that needed to be brushed out tonight.
"Yeah, prob'ly should've been able to figure that out myself huh?"Carefully, she laid down her book and, noticing the already forgotten about mug of hot cocoa, rolled her eyes. Why did she even bother getting hot chocolate? She held up her right hand. "Muggle" and her left, "Born" before clapping them together "muggle-born"
She pulled her head up and spun around in the chair to face the girl, streaks now visible, but the rest of her hair a mess. She tried to flatten a bit of it down, but soon gave up. "Fancy some hot chocolate? I haven't drank any yet, and I'm bound to forget about it. No real use in me having it...is it drank or drunk? So, what're you then?" She made a mental note to go look in a dictionary to figure out whether it was drank of drunk. She then made a mental note to find a dictionary in this massive library. That lead to a mental note about finding out what sort of sorting system was in the library, and Avis was suddenly very behind on her to-do list. She sighed. There was always tomorrow for reading. Today was for polite conversation and finding a dictionary.

Avis tipped her head back to look at Eonaria when she spoke, replying, "Yeah, prob'ly should've been able to figure that out myself, huh?" Then she put down her book and held up her hands. "Muggle," Avis said, referencing her right hand, "born," raising her left hand, and put them together with a sense of finality. "Muggle-born." Eonaria smiled slightly at the display. "Yep."
Then Avis sat up to face Eonaria fully, attempting to fix her hair. She noticed that Avis had pretty, blue streaks dyed through her hair, similar to the green one in her own hair. Avis offered her the hot chocolate, explaining that she hadn't drunk any yet and she would probably forget to do so anywho.
"Oh- I really love sweets, but I haven't been feeling good about them lately, and I'm not the biggest fan of chocolate. Plus, I'll remind you to drink it every now and then." Eonaria grinned. "You can keep your hot chocolate- I mean, I don't even know where you got it from! It probably took a bit of effort to procure. Speaking of which, where did you get it?" Then Avis inquired if the proper term was 'drank' or 'drunk.'
"Um, I think it depends on the context. For example, you would use 'drunk' for 'I haven't drunk any yet,' but you would use 'drank' for 'I drank some already.' So it's all about the tense that you're using." Eonaria paused, contemplating her words. "English can be extremely weird at some times."
When Avis inquired about her blood status, Eonaria chuckled slightly. "Ah, I'm Pureblood myself. No Muggle blood in, what, nine generations? Something like that. It's honestly a bit crazy. What about you?"

Avis shrugged. If the girl didn't want hot chocolate it was her loss. "I brought the powder from home, and the room of requirement is pretty neat for heating things up. Its generally pretty great, unless, obviously, you forget it." She shrugged again and tasted a bit of her hot chocolate. It was still a decent temperature, not incredibly hot, but not too cold. Chocolate caramel flavored, Alaina's favorite. Avis liked mint more, but she had already drank (drunk?) all her mint this year.It was decent hot chocolate, the other girl was wrong not to have taken it. Which reminded her. "Avis, by the way." She rolled her eyes as the girl explained the difference between drunk and drank. "Well I'm glad I now know proper English usage them. I will now pass my GCSEs.
She looked closer as the girl mentioned that she was a pure-blood. She sounded very proud of that fact. Was that a general source of pride for wizards? Avis couldn't see why that would be. She was clearly a muggle-born, she thought, and she rolled her eyes as the girl asked about her status. "Well, if I didn't know what a muggle-born was, what do you think I would be?"

When Eonaria asked where the Ravenclaw had gotten the hot chocolate, Avis simply shrugged and explained that she had brought the powder from home and used the Room of Requirement to heat it up. Eonaria nodded in surprise, watching the other girl take a sip of the hot chocolate. She had forgotten it was even possible to bring edibles(if the powder was considered edible) from home. Perhaps Eonaria should have stocked up on some candies and snacks she could eat by herself in her dormitory. Then Avis introduced herself before rolling her eyes at Eonaria's hedged grammar lecture, snarking that she was glad to learn proper English usage and would now pass her GCSEs. Eonaria tilted her head at this, choosing to ignore the slight rudeness in that statement.
"What's a GCSE? Is that like an O.W.L. for.. English?" She frowned. Then when Eonaria mentioned that she was a Pureblood, Avis rolled her eyes again, muttering if she didn't know what a muggle-born was, then obviously she must be one. Eonaria looked a bit startled. "Well, sometimes half-bloods and other wizard-born folk aren't raised the traditional way. Was I just supposed to assume you were a muggle-born?" She was starting to feel slightly offended. She wasn't a total prat! Well, Eonaria liked to think she was a prat at all, but that would be a lie. But compared to the rest of her family, she was certainly much more accepting of muggle-borns.

The girl tilted her head a bit, and Avis couldn't tell if it was out of curiosity or hostility for her comments. Avis also really didn't care all that much, it didn't really matter whether the girl liked her or not. So she tilted her head to match the girl's tilt, looking her in the eye. It was somewhat difficult to make eye contact when they were at different angles after all.
"What's a GCSE? Is that like an O.W.L. for.. English?
Oh right. The girl didn't understand how basic human society worked outside of the wizarding world. Avis made a conscious (and probably wise) choice to not say that out loud. She didn't really care if the girl was off-put by her or felt hostile, but she didn't really want to be hated. "Yeah, it stands for General Certificate of Secondary Education, its basically OWLs, but for you know, normal subjects. At least I think so, based on what I've read and heard about OWLs." Avis crinkled her forehead a bit, thinking about what she knew about the O.W.Ls, which wasn't much.
"Well, sometimes half-bloods and other wizard-born folk aren't raised the traditional way. Was I just supposed to assume you were a muggle-born?"
Avis shrugged. "I don't see why you couldn't. I would have assumed you were pureborn when you didn't know about the GCSEs. I would assume that mixed-blood folks would have a mixed understanding, and I don't see why a pureborn would be raised in normal society.

OOC- its two and a bit months in, I'm assuming she found the ROR around a month ago, I have access to it so I don't see why she can't, and she would only have had 5 or so mint.

Eonaria tilted her head, and the other girl mirrored her movement, creating just the tiniest inkling of surprise within her. Not many people responded to the random little things Eonaria did. When Avis explained that GCSE stood for General Certificate of Secondary Education, and that it was like O.W.L.s for 'normal subjects,' Eonaria frowned. "Like, Muggle science and stuff? We learned a bit about atoms and molecules in Transfiguration."
Slightly irritated, Eonaria asked if she was just supposed to assume that Avis was a muggle-born, and the Ravenclaw just shrugged. "I don't see why you couldn't. I would have assumed you were pureborn when you didn't know about the GCSEs. I would assume that mixed-blood folks would have a mixed understanding, and I don't see why a pureborn would be raised in normal society."
The first thought that went through Eonaria's mind was that pureborn wasn't a word, and the second was offense. "A normal society? You mean for Muggles. Normal." Eonaria almost huffed before deciding that if the situation escalated any further, she would likely say something incredibly stupid that she'd later regret. "Look, just cause I didn't know about this one thing that Muggles do doesn't mean that I'm abnormal." On second thought, what if that wasn't even what Avis meant? This situation wasn't going very well. The other girl seemed friendly at first, but it was honestly becoming a bit obnoxious. Then again, some of this was probably her fault as well... perhaps Avis and Eonaria just didn't mix very well. Resigned to an empty argument, Eonaria sighed. The other girl was practically radiating disdain, almost as strong as any contempt her brother could produce when sneering at Muggle-borns in Diagon Alley.

"Like, Muggle science and stuff? We learned a bit about atoms and molecules in Transfiguration."
Avis sighed. This was going to get very frustrating if she had to explain every single piece of information about everything.
"Yeah, science and reading and math-thats using numbers to get new ones, by the way."
"A normal society? You mean for Muggles. Normal."
Avis frowned. Why did Eonaria have to make such a big deal about every little word. She gave a small huff of annoyance as she glared at the girl, slowly nodding her head as if she were a kindergarten teacher and her student had finally learned something. "Normal, as in the majority of the human race, as in muggle. That would be considered normal.
"Look, just cause I didn't know about this one thing that Muggles do doesn't mean that I'm abnormal."
"I didn't-" Avis tensed, defensively, and she gripped her mug tightly. "I. didn't. say. you. were. abnormal. I said, it wouldn't be likely for a pureborn to be born in normal society. Meaning, like England. Besides" She muttered under her breath, "What's wrong with being abnormal? Honestly, its not as if you're better than I just cause you're Pure"Avis downed the rest of her hot chocolate-her hope for relaxation was ruined anyway, and gently slammed the mug on the ground. She picked her book back up and opened it, beginning to half read, and half listen to whatever the girl would say next. This was a holden's fool-level conversation, and while she wanted to ignore the girl, her stubbornness would not allow her to end the argument.

Avis sighed, probably in irritation, most likely thinking 'this girl is so dumb' before replying dryly, "Yeah, science and reading and math-thats using numbers to get new ones, by the way." Eonaria's lips flattened into a thin line when she heard the jab. "Thanks for the newsflash, we definitely don't understand what five plus five is. I'm so thankful that you have come to enlighten us poor wizarding folk." She slammed her mouth shut. Where had that come from?? Now Eonaria was definitely regretting this conversation and maybe everything she had said in the last eight minutes. "Uh- anyway-" Should she apologize? Would that make it worse?
Well, Eonaria was already in deep water, so she might as well keep the argument up. But as Avis nodded slowly like Eonaria was a six year old before clarifying that 'normal' referred to the majority of the human race, Muggles, and then muttered that "it wouldn't be likely for a pureborn to be born in normal society. Meaning, like England," Eonaria finally snapped, throwing up her hands. "I was literally born in England! It's on my student record- and many other Purebloods were born in England!" She heaved a heavy sigh, already feeling the tears pricking her eyes. Eonaria certainly wasn't sad- far from it. She just happened to tear up whenever she got frustrated. Stupid tear ducts. Though I should probably get out of here before I start full-on crying.
"Honestly, it's not as if you're better than I just cause you're pure." Avis set the mug down none-too-gently and grabbed her book, beginning to read it, though Eonaria was sure she wasn't actually reading. "Yes, we-" Eonaria caught herself, wondering what she was even going to say. Purebloods had better education? A good headstart? That was certainly true for her family, but not all Purebloods spent their childhood studying. And anything she could come up with in half a second could be easily refuted. Eonaria let out a frustrated mix between a growl and sigh before beginning to feel that secondhand embarrassment. If her brother was here to witness this scene, no doubt he'd write a letter to their parents and then she'd receive a Howler about her terrible lack of decorum and superiority the very next morning.
"Look, if you ever want people to like you, you could probably do away with that infuriating attitude." Eonaria finally muttered- and then immediately felt bad. That was definitely not something you should say to anyone. But then again.. hopefully she phrased it in a way that wasn't too hurtful...? She stood there for a moment longer before mumbling. "Right. Bye, then." And then Eonaria left the library as fast as she could without looking like she was running away from Avis.
