Alyss walked into charms feeling confident. She clearly had no idea what was in store. Alyss flipped her hair over her shoulder as she walked through the door to the classroom, only to find their usual desks pushed to the back of the room, accompanied by a few large tables at the front of the room decked out with pastries and desserts, along with bags of ingredients- sugar, flour- and a few cakes and pie simply floating in the air.
Alyss tentatively made her way to her seat, plopping down with a thud. Usually, she would take out her textbook, but today seemed to be special, so she decided that today simply called for a wand, and nothing else. She gazed at the Professor’s desk, seeing it stacked with a wide array of bowls, plates, eggs, and other bakery essentials, all pulled together with their charms Professor in a chef uniform- hat and all- welcoming them in.
Alyss was wearing her usual Slytherin robes today, with some dangly strawberry earrings hanging from her ear lobes. Although they matched no part of her outfit, it always made a good start to the day when she got to choose which of her silly earrings to wear to class. As she settled down, Alyss took a deep breath, wondering what on earth the class was in for before Professor Zoë began talking.
Filled with quite a few puns and jokes, Alyss found herself giggling as the Professor said “I would like to officially welcome you to the Pâtisserie de Charms! I am your head chef and will be your guide through the wonderful world of pastries! Now I know some of you are thinking, ‘aren’t we supposed to be focusing on learning spells’. And to you, I say, j’accuse! We ‘ave time for both in this class,” It was clear to Alyss that this would be an exciting class, though she didn’t quite have a tangible idea of what form Charms was going to take that day, especially given the circumstances of the classroom that day.
Turning to her desk neighbor for the day, Alyss whispered “Wonder what spells we’ll be whipping up today!”

Being punctual meant that Meiyu would arrive to her lessons on time, her preying eyes on other students who arrived after she had and making her own judgements on each student was something she had looked forward to each day. This day was no different, though their desks had been pushed to the back of the room, Meiyu was forced to abandon her brief moments of judgement towards others from her confined space, rather being forced into an open space, indirectly being coerced into denying classmates her morning glares.
With her only item on her being her wand, Meiyu longed to return to the comfort of their usual seating arrangements, though disarray of desserts floating where their desks now occupied, Meiyu noticed a blonde Slytherin approach the empty seat beside her, the strawberry statement earrings chosen as a fashion statement led to Meiyu wondering if this girl truly belonged in her assorted house. How had it become that one who outwardly defied the values held by Slytherin house, had been placed there, a place she had frequently been told she belonged in. Her cluttered thoughts were quickly disturbed at the session promptly beginning, Professor Zoë was an interesting character, throwing jokes into a field of students who had they been upperclassmen, would have laughed for any potential extra credit marks offered.
"Wonder what spells we’ll be whipping up today!" The blonde had muttered in Meiyu's direction, almost bewildering her at how oblivious her peer was, her expression remained blank as her eyes trailed back to the floating pantry, hastily responding to the girl. "Likely to be a levitation charm," The poor girl had to almost stop herself from subjecting her own peers to venom, so early on in the day, continuing satirically with, "thats if I really had to guess." Her faux suspicions confirmed with another student answering Professor Zoë's inquiry, similar to what was shared by the girl beside her.
“Magnifique Ellora! The Levitation Charm does, in fact, make objects levitate and allows you to move them while they are floating about, making it a particularly handy charm for moving even heavy objects once you get good enough with the charm." The professor had noted after bribing the first years with brownie points in the form of winning a singular house point, something Meiyu did not concern herself with, opting not to appear as a know it all, degrading herself under watchful eyes for a mere point. With due course, the lesson had continued with the spell incantation shared and Professor Zoë encouraging the students to work with their neighbours; fortunate for Meiyu, the blonde Slytherin from earlier was her allocated parter — with the unforeseeable task of attempting to successfully levitate a bag of flour above your neighbours head.
"Should I go first then?" She questioned as she drew her wand, turning to face the Slytherin this time, picturing the young one drenched in flour at a premeditated spell failure.
TDLR Meiyu is scheming already...

Alyss knew that her joke hadn’t landed, when the girl next to her instead gave her a very straightforward answer with a serious expression plastered on her face. Alyss rolled her eyes, sighing as the Gryffindor acted like she was stupid. “Yes, I- I know, it was a joke. Oh just- just forget it.” Alyss muttered, frustration showing clearly on her face. She had very much been aware that the levitation charm was in the curriculum, and was also aware that it was made quite obvious by the scene set before them.
Alyss turned to listen to the rest of the instructions, a slight frown creasing her brows. She was still a bit put off by her failure to make her neighbor laugh. Snapping from her thoughts, she tuned back into the lesson as the professor gave them instructions. Wincing at the implication that, should she or her shoulder partner fail, the other would find themselves covered in flour. It did sound like fun, she conceded, however dirty she may end up at the end of this lesson.
Seeing as her partner ended up being the girl from earlier, who hadn’t gotten her joke, Alyss did not manage to bite her tongue to stop a slightly pointed question from escaping in response to the girl asking if she should go first, "Should I go first then?" Alyss was almost certain that she was going to try to pull something on her, but instead replied with a quip of her own, her stubbornness showing. “I don’t know, is your spell casting as bad as your humor?” Alyss knew as soon as she said this that it might’ve been a little uncalled for. But all in good fun, right? It was just payback for immediately assuming earlier that she was an oblivious child who was also stupid. For goodness sake, she was eleven. That was plenty old enough to use her context clues. Alyss may have been being slightly unreasonable, but in her mind, it was simply her getting even.

Seeing the blonde Slytherin's frustration had satisfied the lioness ever so slightly, though her initial joke had failed to entertain her, she was in no mood for small talk this morning and being paired with a bubbly blonde girl had also soured her mood slightly. At times Meiyu felt as though she could not help herself, some people genuinely feigned ignorance for the sake of seeking friendship. Had the people in question, also referring to the girl beside her, made better attempts and sought genuine conversations, she would have likely engaged in a more positive light.
Yet the girl continued to peeve Meiyu with another weak jab, responding to her question with an almost pathetic rhetorical question, acting as though her choice of words were venomous enough to strike Meiyu's nerve. It hadn't. Instead, Meiyu ignored her remark, opting to raise from her seat and draw her wand out, pointing the dark brown wood at the young girl, adamant to maintain her glaring eye contact and still expression. Her gaze diverted to the slightly open bags of flour resting on the side swiftly directing her wand now to at inanimate object and chanting, "Wingardium Leviosa", taking precaution to enunciate each word correctly, swishing her wand with a slight flick.
Meiyu's eyes almost sparkled in adoration at the success of her spell, at times her wand would prove to be difficult as though it was able to read the intent in her mind, this time the phoenix core laced in her wand wanted to participate, as though a mere child chose to listen to instructions. The bag of flour began levitating, rising from its position on the table and with swift wand movements, made its way towards the pair, finding its new home levitating above the snakes blond locks. Averting her gaze back to down to the girl, Meiyu opted to respond to her previous foul remark, "Better than your wit, evidently." Her tone, laced with dry indifference, cut through the air like a blade, adding, "At least my spells land."
With her final words, she withdrew her wand, causing the bag of flour, which had been slightly opened, to fall quickly on her head. The force of collision causing the flour to spill from the bag and spill all over the younger girl, her premeditated attack had succeeded, with the slightest smirk, Meiyu turned her head, acting as though another student had called her name out which had distracted her, causing the mishap leading to the blonde's demise.

Alyss’s eyes flew closed as soon as she glimpsed Meiyu glancing away from the task at hand. And, low a behold, the flour slipped out of her grasp and got all over Alyss. Sure, maybe she had been a little rude to her. But she didn’t do anything that warranted flour everywhere. Sputtering, she tried to get any flour that had made its way into her mouth out of it. And shot glares at Meiyu as she began to shake the flour from her hair as well, flipping her head upside down and back up again as to most effectively clear any flour from her blonde locks.
“You nincompoop.” Alyss spat, eyes shooting daggers at Meiyu. “You couldn’t even properly maintain a spell? she rolled her eyes, hand clenching into a fist around her wand. “Whatever. It’s my turn now, and you will pay.” Alyss said as she turned towards their desks, and hesitantly released her tense grip on her wand as to properly hold it as to cast the spell. Unfortunately, she had been all too focused on the incident and had forgotten the wand movement demonstrated. The incantation was simple enough, and if she remembered correctly, as was the wand movement. So simple, that it slipped her mind.
She held up her wand and pointed it at the bag of flour. “Wingargium Leviosa.” Unfortunately for her, nothing happened, due to her lack of movement. Taking a deep breath, she tried again. And again. After the forth try of nothing, she turned to the other girl, utterly defeated with eyes beginning to water.
“I’m sorry. I don’t know what I did to you, but I’m sorry. Now, what on earth am I supposed to do with my wand?” Thankfully, Alyss managed to keep her voice from sounding shaky as she spoke, and gazed at the ground. This other girl clearly hated her, and although it was mutual, Alyss had to give it up. The staring at the ground was mostly because she didn’t want to have to look up and see what she certain would be a smirk on Meiyu’s face, but she was the one struggling, the one needing help. She had not come to Hogwarts to fail, she had come to learn. If that involved setting aside her pride with one classmate, so be it.

Without fail, the smirk on Meiyu's lips only widened at the sight before her. The blonde girl who suddenly knew how to bite back had succumb so easily to the childish trick, it was amusing. Of course, she could of reacted in a nicer manner, but the snake deserved to be taught a lesson, they all did. It was oddly ironic, Meiyu's peculiar resentment towards to snakes of the school despite the expectation her family had instilled on her placement there was far too complex and oxymoronic for anyone to understand. Her inner conflict entwined with the slight prejudice she had developed for the students of Slytherin had only pushed her to behave in such manner. Unwarranted, yet arguably deserved, if she was to ever get questioned by a professor for her outbursts.
Her attempt at insulting the lioness in return was laughable, at best. She wouldn't give the blonde girl the satisfaction of jest by daring to emit a singular laugh at the weak insult thrown in her direction, the daggers she shot naturally failed to intimidate Meiyu either. The girl appeared as though she was a mere child, despite evidently being close in age, throwing a tantrum. "Trust me, I can maintain a spell, it landed, didn't it?" She questioned with a jest, her head tilting slightly to admire the sight, albeit Alyss had already shaken off most of the flour. It wasn't long until her brows raised in intrigue with her response, thus she awaited. Yet, nothing happened, the lack of wand movement showcased she hadn't concentrated enough earlier. Perhaps thrown off guard by Meiyu's childish antics, she naturally forgot, yet it was amusing.
Alyss chanted the incantation as though she was calling for Bloody Mary in a dark bathroom, her eagerness likely frightening to any onlookers, still, her attempts were all unsuccessful. Meiyu almost felt bad for the poor girl as she noticed her eyes begin to water, yet the fun had only begun. It was far too soon to end, besides, the games had only begun. Charms had often been dull, the spells taught had barely intrigued Meiyu, though she made conscious efforts to pay attention and maintain an O average within the class, as she did with her other classes. Behaviour like that would likely lead for the Sorting Hat to misinterpret her once more, placing her in Ravenclaw, similar to how her mother had once been placed, becoming the first within the Knight family to break the Slytherin legacy they cherished with adornment.
The apology she spilled was the cherry on top of it all and once more, Meiyu was provided with a window of opportunity. More often than not, the windows of opportunity fate provided her in attempts to stray her back to a better path and prove her worthy of the house she had the misfortune of being in. It was tempting. Unfortunately for Alyss, not tempting enough. Meiyu's second nature had become her first, more often than not choosing to do the wrong thing, particularly if she had nothing to gain. Alyss was yet to become a useful asset to the young girl. Arguably, it was selfish and she knew that. Thing was, she did not care, yet Alyss' sudden shift in demeanour, as though she had submit herself unwillingly, it was a pathetic behaviour a Slytherin would never dare engage in. How she had placed in that house was a question Meiyu could not begin to comprehend, nor would she bother. Yet, it was the satisfaction she sought and craved, likely, what she needed.
Meiyu had already developed an unlikeable personality, she had already made the poor girl cry. For once, she could set it aside. "You weren't doing the wand movement," she responded bitterly, scoffing with a slight head turn, not wanting to look at the snake any longer. "Swish and flick, like a lowercase U, but the other way around." Meiyu continued, her tone ironically softening with her expression remaining blank, not wanting to help the girl mere moments ago. It was part of the plan, she had to remind herself, as much as the kindness was unnatural to her, Meiyu had to think about the whole picture.
The blonde Slytherin could be a useful asset, she had already done what was more than necessary in proving her value merely by tossing her fraudulent ego aside. Though it would take Meiyu a while to think about how she could use the poor girl, her main priority was to maintain a sudden friendly facade in hopes the idiotic girl would mistaken it as actual kindness, long enough for Meiyu to formulate an idea of what she could accomplish using her.
