You're a Menace Colin McCoire!

Tuesday 15 October 2024
It was almost full moon! Colin had made it his mission this year to learn how, or at least find out if there was any way at all he could learn how to transform at will. He was pretty disillusioned about the whole animagus process. How would he ever be able to keep a whole mandrake leaf in his mouth for a whole month when there was a good chance he'd be transforming at least once, and maybe twice during that time. That would actually be four transformations! Knowing his luck, the leaf would be perfectly content to remain in place for the first three, only to fall out of his mouth just at the very end of the last transformation. Yeugh.
There had to be a better way! After all, it wasn't so long ago that boys with werewolfery just had to deal with being a mindless and ravening abomination for a couple days a month. Colin smirked as he poked a sausage with his fork. He would never make mention of Moira's time of the month to her face anyway, but the comparison was one hundred percent valid in Colin's way of thinking.
The sound of an owl delivering someone a letter floated down from the enchanted ceiling of the hall. Colin paid it no mind at all, and was also tuned out to the chatter of the first years nearby. Praxis sat next to him --- by now a well known Pureblood of the old school. Cass and Colin's mate Avery sat across. He absently flipped through the pages of the book on lycanthropy that lay open next to his breakfast plate. To be honest, it was a pretty lame book. It was written before there even was wolfsbane potion. Still, Colin regarded it his sworn duty to pursue all avenues of research.
The owl dropped its envelope in the space between Colin and Avery who was directly opposite, cheerfully working on his own breakfast. He ignored it. He was fascinated by an anecdote about some Hogwarts professor that was a werewolf. He rested his head in one hand as he considered what that would have been like. Being a werewolf without wolfsbane. How did that even work? His gaze wandered over to the Hufflepuff table, where he caught sight of beautiful blue-eyed AngelFyre and then over towards the Gryffindor table. There was that really cute broom racer. All thoughts of lycanthropy dribbled away as the competing thoughts of snogging filled his brain. Colin realised he hadn't actually snogged with anyone since September! Two whole weeks! He sighed. That cute girl out behind the Three Broomsticks... Colin smiled at the recollection.
He let out a sigh.
The envelope rustled.
He wondered what was going on. Not for the first time! He'd always liked snogging. But over the summer, he'd found that more and more, he really needed to snog. It was uncanny, really. The envelope made a sound rather like someone clearing her throat.
Ahem.
Ahem.
Colin's eyes dilated slightly. He knew that sound.
He knew that sound very well!
"Aw crap!" he said. The bite of sausage still stabbed onto the end of his fork never made it to his teeth.
It was a howler from Ma!! Colin's heart sank! He wondered what it could possibly be about! His mind raced. There were easily forty or fifty reasons she could write to him about from rule breaks to certain habits he'd acquired whilst at school. The howler leaped up from the table and suspended itself at face level. No doubt its very existence would excite considerable interest at the Slytherin table! A howler always meant two things: embarrassment for the recipient and a morning full of entertainment and gossip for everyone else!
The envelope tore itself open and took a deep breath...
COLIN ANDROMEDA EARENDEL ACONITE MCCOIRE!!
A fork clattered onto a plate over at the Ravenclaw table. Colin knew instantly that Liam could hear Ma's howler. Oh God. This was going to be horrible! Colin winced when he heard his first name shouted out into the air. But the howler didn't stop there! Andromeda! Honestly Ma! A girl's name!? Colin cringed. Earendel was, admittedly, a cool name. But still! He turned red as any tomato as the enumeration of his names continued! Aconite! Colin groaned. No one knew that he even had middle names. He wanted to just slip down under the table and crawl away from the great hall forever! Now everyone knew his middle names!
But of course, Ma's tirade didn't end here!
Colin knew it could only get much much worse after she listed out all his names!
COLIN ANDROMEDA EARENDEL ACONITE MCCOIRE!!
Ma screeched again!
DROP THAT SAUSAGE RIGHT NOW!! Well, there was no doubt the howler was from Ma --- she certainly knew her son and exactly what he would be eating! The fork he was still holding clattered to his plate.
WHAT are all these letters your Da and me have received FROM THE MINISTRY OF MAGIC CONTROL OF MAGICAL CREATURES and the head of ST MUNGO's MAGICAL BUG WARD!? Eh? Colin? Dear Mr and Mrs McCoire, she writes. We regret to inform you that your son is the cause of a MINOR EPIDEMIC of hag slug infections in London, Ottery St. Catchpole, Hogsmeade and the Highlands Region around Altnaharra.
Colin blanched.
Tomato red was instantly replaced by fennel bulb white within half a second. "Oh no!" Hag slugs? He didn't have hag slugs! How could ---
DON'T YOU OH NO ME, MISTER!! COLIN McCOIRE, YOU ARE A WALKING, LOPING, RUNNING MENACE TO WIZARDING SOCIETY! No fewer than TWELVE young wizarding and squib girls right here in Altnaharra have been INFECTED! Three girls AND A BOY in London! Two more girls in Ottery St. Catchpole! Four in Hogsmeade! HOW DARE YOU!! You are a mangy and flea-bitten vector of of magical maladies Colin McCoire! YOU CAN'T GO ANYWHERE WITHOUT RUINING GIRL'S LIVES! I trust you know by now how hag slugs are spread! Honestly! You are every bit as bad as your father!
Ma's voice suddenly lowered in pitch and volume, but not in intensity. If anything, her ire only grew with each solidly punctuated sentence. Colin knew her speech could only get worse.
If you do not get yourself cured of your HAG SLUG INFECTION today I promise you Colin McCoire, I shall go down to your school, hunt you down and drag you away from that place. For. Ever. Make no mistake! A year's worth of detention in Hogwarts, hanging from your toenails down in some dungeon with rats nibbling your eyeballs will be preferable to what awaits you if I do not see an owl from the School immediately!
And as suddenly as the horrific thing had leapt to life, it fell silent, dropping back onto the table. Colin was utterly shocked. His pond scum green eyes remained wide and fixed on the now silent howler. Colin had no idea what to think! His mouth hung open in stunned silence. Colin looked around at the kids nearby. His friends and housemates. Avery, Cass, Ava, Mahl, Praxis, June, Vale and all the rest.
"H-Hag --- I don't have hag slugs?" was all he could get out at last!

OOC Note: This thread is open for anyone to join in, especially if your name is @AngelFyre McCubbin! Feel free to comment on Colin's predicament or any of the many rumours you may have heard about him! Or just pop in to enjoy hearing Ma ream Colin out for spreading a nasty magical malady all around wizarding Britain!
And yes, now you too know all of Colin's names!
Keep your mind in hell; and don't despair.

Eh-Wha??!! with @Colin McCoire

Emily's mood was a little better that day. She was certain that reading wasn't going to help but as evident in her more brightened expression and relaxed state of mind, she was feeling a lot better. She still couldn't believe it though; Hogsmeade getting bombed just yesterday. She had been in fits nearly all night after hearing about Casey, even though she was assured multiple times that he was alright. And he was. At the same time, the shock was still taking its time filtering out of Emily's body. While he was still recovering, she tried to distract herself with anything she could find, but she was always drawn back to her books which gave her the five minutes of time to herself she needed to process her feelings.
So books truly were the saving grace somehow. It was quite baffling to be honest. Who reads when their friend has been caught in an attack staged by cowardly aggressors? Well, if it was curbing Emily's need to cry again, she would take every little help she could get. In the end she had four books in her arms when she came to sit and read by herself at the Hufflepuff table. She was engrossed in an entertaining novel when the most horrifying sound came from across the Hall. She could've flown out through the ceiling of the Great Hall if that sound was any louder... That's how high she jumped out of her seat when it happened.
Despite being reduced to a startled cat, her curiosity nevertheless honed in to what was making that ghastly shrieking sound. She slunk out of her seat, her books neatly packed away where she knew no one would take them and lo and behold... She was led to the one and only boy who could attract this much attention and curiosity from her... And evidently more trouble in equal measure.
"Colin...?"
Her voice was probably a drip in the water tap compared to the mouthful - literally so! - from the Howler she caught eye of. Ohh... One of them. She had heard a lick or two about how it's in one's best interest to not be in receipt of one of them. So going by the absurdly "Huhh??" face that was painted over Colin's face as he got chewed out by the letter in front of him, it was clear to Emily that everyone wasn't kidding about them.
Emily wasn't going to blame him either. She was just as confused and petrified by the sight before her. Dare she say that thing would put the fear of God into even the most bravest of heroes, and Emily knew a fair list of such people both inside and outside of fiction.
When it finally extinguished the last of its words, Emily poked Colin's shoulder gently, trying to gauge a reaction that wasn't out of pale shock.
Her voice squeaked after witnessing such a shivering spectacle but maintained the same friendly, squishy tone she always kept for her buddies and classmates. "You okay, Colin...? That was... Quite a show there."

Eonaria was absolutely enjoying her time at Hogwarts so far. All of the classes finally allowed her to get some hands-on experience on all the things she had read about at home! And there were many very interesting people. She wouldn't say she had a lot of friends, but she'd certainly met quite a few other students...
Eonaria peered down the Gryffindor table, hoping for any other dish that might catch her eye. She was a bit of a picky eater, and her appetite wasn't very strong at the moment... but hey, some food was better than no food. She was about to ask another student to pass some of the fruit platter when an ear-piercing shriek rang through the Great Hall. Eonaria's head shot up immediately, twisting around to find the source. It came from the Slytherin table, where a floating red Howler was screaming unintelligible words, though after her ears adjusted slightly, she picked out the words "sausage," "epidemic," and "hag slugs." What on earth was a hag slug? A slug that behaved like a hag? A slug that could brew potions? Admittedly, she'd probably had a DADA lesson on this, but she forgot...
When the Howler finally fell silent after shrieking more things about "how dare you" and, oddly, "rats nibbling your eyeballs," Eonaria struggled between laughing and sobbing in utter confusion. What was going on? That combination of words made no sense. Judging by context, it was mostly likely a letter from someone's parents about causing a 'hag slug' epidemic, but that sounded more like an infestation than anything else. How could that Slytherin boy have caused a parasite infestation of some sort?
After debating for a few seconds, Eonaria got up awkwardly, giving up on the rest of her meal. She went over to the Slytherin table, feeling very self conscious, and squeaked, "Uhh, sorry to bother you after that, but... what's a hag slug infection?"

The great hall was drafty. Of course, it was. Was there a place at Hogwarts that wasn't drafty? If so, Avis would love to find it. However, the food was delicious. Avis' mother was a lot of things, but a good cook was unfortunately not one of them. Avis was a sucker for a good home-cooked meal. She absolutely adored the food at Hogwarts. And so she mowed down her food, though she loved the food, she had not yet learned the art of savoring things.
What she did not adore however, was the loud screeching coming from the Slytherin table. Couldn't the girl finish eating in peace? The source of the commotion seemed to be a red thing, screaming at an older year. The middle names were, admittedly, funny. Avis had been under the assumption that she was the only one here to have a middle name, but it seemed the kid had her beat. By a long shot. If Avis' name was embarrassing, at least it wasn't a boy's name. The red monster even seemed to know what the kid was doing, as he dropped his sausage at the envelope's instructions.
Avis finished her meal as she half listened to the shrieking. She didn't understand much of what the envelope was saying, but whatever it was, it really seemed to freak him out. Or that might have just been from embarrassment. Or the fact that some paper was screaming in his face. What did he have, slug hags? What on earth was that?
Thankfully, Eonaria was sneaking up from the Gryffindor table and asked the question for her. Avis quickly ate her last bite and, slipping her fork into her pocket, followed the girl up to the Slytherin table, listening for an answer as she passed, whispering into the older kid's ear. "Don't worry, I got embarrassing names too."

Colin's mother. Kim's brow furrowed when the information was further revealed about the contents of the howler. Wait a minute, hag slug infections? Colin had gotten into that too? It seemed as if Colin had infected at least twelve people too. Wow. Okay, Kim hadn't expected to find out that Colin was also the recipient of some hag slugs. Getting up from his seat, Kibō coiled around his neck and shoulders, Kim made his way over to where Colin was. Upon reaching his destination, he reached out to place a hand on Colin's shoulder and reached down to grasp one of his hands. Placing a folded note into it, he curled Colin's fingers around it and then headed off again without a word.
The contents of the note would read...
We need to get you cured of those slugs.
I know what you're going through, I had the same thing happen to me last summer.
If you want to get rid of them, meet me outside on the grounds during lunchtime.
It's important. Do not delay.
Kim headed back to his previously vacant seat at the table and returned to feeding Kibō some insects as he ate a croissant with some ham. He still didn't feel much like eating but at least the boy was in a state of recovery now, unlike before. If no one spoke to him while he was finishing up his food, he'd eventually leave to head to classes. But if they did, he might stick around for a short time longer. Kibō hissed contentedly upon consuming the insects. They were fresher than the last time because said insects were only 24 hours old. The last ones had been over 48 hours old and not as good as they had been almost dead by that time. These had still been able to fly a little which was nice.

You're a Menace Colin McCoire!

Colin was left entirely, utterly, completely, and totally speechless. Even the usual noise of Great Hall chatter died down as the other kids paused to watch and listen to the spectacle unfolding at the Slytherin table. Titters of laughter soon broke the silence and conversation swelled to their pre-howler levels. Colin felt certain that most if not all of those conversations now revolved around one of three topics: Colin's howler, Colin's hag slugs, and Colin's snogging.
"How do you even get hag slugs?" Colin asked no one in particular. He looked from face to face. Even some kids from other Houses had come over to watch the show.
Some little Gryffindor girl piped up, asking Colin: "What's a hag slug infection?" He blushed. He wasn't even sure himself!
"You okay, Colin...?" asked Emily. At least the Hufflepuff girl wasn't the sort to tease him about this! "That was... Quite a show there." Colin could only nod dumbly. He was soooo glad that everyone was enjoying themselves!
A Ravenclaw girl turned from her table, chiming in on Colin's middle names: "Don't worry, I got embarrassing names too."
"Uh," Colin replied; "Thanks?" He so wanted to just melt under the table and disappear from the hall!
What Colin wasn't expecting was a silent visit from Kim. He felt his friend's hand on his shoulder. Looking up from the Ravenclaw girl, he saw Kibō curled around Kim's shoulders. He knew the snake's name, but hadn't yet been properly introduced. Kim reached down and grabbed Colin's hand. He didn't resist. Kim didn't say a word, but he did press a piece of paper into his hand.
Great.
Probably a 'never talk to me again' note.
Colin watched as Kim stalked away, without a word. He blinked. At least most of the school wasn't staring at him any more! He felt the paper in his hand and looked down. It was a note! And it didn't say 'never talk to me again'! Colin read it. It was just a few lines:
We need to get you cured of those slugs.
I know what you're going through, I had the same thing happen to me last summer.

Who Slugs? with @Colin McCoire - @Kim Sato - @Eonaria Kabukimono and @Avis Marlong
Speech: #cfa120
Thoughts: Italics
Even when a small gathering of students came up to him, Colin was as still as a gargoyle. The poor bloke was frozen stiff after the onslaught of terror from that bigmouth letter. His hair looked like it had been blown back from the sheer force of it! Emily carefully weaved a few fingers in between his hair to try and smooth it back into the more recognisable "Bird-Nest Colin" hairstyle.
She waved a soft hand in front of him but clearly all form of transmission had ceased for the time being. She couldn't help but feel bad for him though... Her ears picked up on a few snickers and hushed whispers when everything slowly shifted back into normalcy again. She shook her head disappointedly at some of the behaviour from across the four tables and instead patted Colin's back reassuringly.
"It's okay, Colin. I bet everyone has had a moment like that in their lives before," she grinned. Well... Maybe not a moment exactly like what Colin had to bear witness to, but it was true that a lot worse could happen in public. She perched on the edge of the same bench he was sitting on. Although he was more than likely not registering what she was saying and more focused on trying to process what in the bejeezums just happened to him, Emily kept talking, hoping that something she was saying would help distract him a bit.
"If it'll make you feel any better, want to hear something that happened to me once?" Emily smiled, her mind drifting back to a few years ago. "Back in Primary school... Before Hogwarts... We had our end of year concert. I was recovering from a case of the flu but I insisted that I'd take part in the choir. And wouldn't you know it... I fainted halfway through the last song. It seemed I was a bit more unwell back then than I thought!"
It was mortifying when it happened, she had to admit, but she laughed in hindsight as she kept talking. "I was so embarrassed, I didn't leave the house for days even after recovering from the flu..."
By the time she finished, a Ravenclaw girl came over and offered the same bout of reassurance. A Gryffindor girl also came over, curious on how one acquires "hag slugs" in the first place. It appeared Colin was still trying to work that out for himself too now that the howler had just announced an alleged infection Colin has of the little critters. Emily could only assume Colin was rolling around in the dirt and he came upon them by chance. She couldn't really say in confidence however, given she didn't even know exactly what hag slugs were.
Soon after an older looking boy came over and handed Colin a note. Emily didn't see the contents of what was written, instead too interested on the pet snake he had with him. She gave Colin a "back in a minute face" (if he even actually saw it) and swung off the bench.
She gently came over to the Gryffindor boy, gesturing kindly to the snake. "Are they friendly?"

Snake Snugging! With @Colin McCoire - @Kim Sato
Speech: #cfa120
Thoughts: Italics
If you ever pass Emily on the street with a pet of any kind in tow, you can bet every possession you have that she would get up close and snuggle it, depending on the animal. Dogs? Scratches! Cats? Snuggles! Owls? Tickles! Love was given to every living creature in many different ways when Emily was present, and this boy's snake that remained curled comfortably around him wasn't going to be exempt from her treatment either.
When the critter came up and perched opposite her on the table, Emily bent down to meet it more or less at eye level. Emily's eyes were trained on its shiny scaly body as it slithered it's way down to meet her. The snake looked at her with it's sweet and curious eyes. Emily looked back at it with her own soft and curious eyes, along with a fascinated "Ooo" that slipped quietly from her mouth. She marvelled at the curly companion.
This snake. Was. Adorable.
At the offer of being given the chance to feed the reptile, Emily's face went from awe to excitement real fast. "Oh yes please...!" She politely stuck her finger into the jar of snake nibbles the older student had offered her until she plucked out... Something. It was a little hard to tell with so many bits all mingled together. Not that it really bothered her. It might surprise a lot of people - maybe not so much Colin by now - but Emily was quite the bug enthusiast, as much as she was a magical creature lover.
Heck, call out the name of any animal or critter in the world and Emily would be all over it like a big cuddly rash!
She got down a little lower so that she was at a level where she could hold out the snackie without the snake needing to stretch too far, but also without startling the little guy. She balanced the nibble in her fingers, almost at their tips as she awaited the snake to partake.
"Here you go, buddy... It's all for you...!" she whispered, eager to see what the snake's next move would be.
If this was the moment, she could cross "snake" off the list of animals she had always wanted to feed...
